There's a front outdoor patio, an inside first room that looks like a comfortable, inviting living room and another back area down a ramp with more additional inviting tables and couches. had an extremely disappointing and upsetting experience at this wine bar tonight. From the moment my friend and I walked in, the bartender's attitude felt hostile and unwelcoming. One of the first things he asked us was "Where are you from?" which immediately made the interaction uncomfortable. Shortly afterward, despite it only being around 10:00 PM, he warned us that if we stayed even one minute past midnight he would take our drinks and kick us out. The tone was unnecessarily aggressive and completely out of proportion to the situation. Things escalated when I presented my valid ID. The bartender examined it for nearly two full minutes, speaking to us in a condescending manner, before ultimately refusing service under the claim that it was fake. My group was all in our 30s, and the way this was handled felt less like a genuine verification and more like profiling and intimidation. Austin has so many great wine bars that know how to create a hospitable environment. Unfortunately, this was not one of them. I left feeling extremely frustrated and upset by how we were treated. read more

I came to house wine for their soft re-opening since their old location on Josephine st closed after the passing of its prior owner. I saw an article on Eater Austin saying Fri 9/27 they'd have some welcome sparkling wine and snacks so I came with the intent to try some, enjoy the new ambiance and probably get a glass of something! I was greeted by super friendly and attentive staff who did bring me a glass of welcome bubbly when I asked. They mentioned about some snacks (nuts, or a hummus plate) as well which I mistakenly assumed was the "free" snacks; I requested the hummus plate and while I was on the phone I was brought nuts. They were toasted and salted; i went ahead and ate them since they were in front of me and they tasted nice enough but I found out they weren't free, I think were $8ish actually for a small serving dish of them. I really can't fault the restaurant for that, it's my fault for not asking since i didnt really need the calories and would've declined if I'd realized it wasn't part of the welcome festivities, but oh well. Otherwise the ambiance of the new place is similar to the prior spot, it's cute in there. They have a nice patio as well. Clean bathrooms, no issues there. It's also amidst lots of good restaurants on S. First so you could easily get dinner before or after as well nearby. read more

I absolutely love the new House wine location. It's conveniently located right on South 1st street. There is limited parking behind the restaurant and paid street parking in the neighborhood behind. The front gate, patio and inside are all so pretty. There is so much to look at and a very cozy vibe. Susie helped us and she was very nice to talk to and very knowledgeable. After ordering two bottles and two charcuterie boards, our server was nowhere to be found nor did she check-in to ask if we needed anything else. When it came time to pay our bill, she had a hard time splitting the cost equally using her handheld kiosk. The first transactions were voided and the second transactions were slightly off but we sorted it out afterwards. This place has so much potential - it's important for servers to be attentive. I got the charcuterie and bread tapas which I expected to have some cheese but was only meat (salami and prosciutto). It was $8 during happy hour which we felt was still a little steep for what it was. My minor complaint is with billing. The frosé was supposedly $7 during happy hour but I was charged $8 which is nbd. However, there was also a small fee for using non-cash payment which I would've liked to know since I had cash. Came in the other day and they didn't have any servers?! Only counter service ordering from a long disorganized line with no explanation. The decor is colorful yet homey, and there are plenty of seating options with cushions for extra comfort. They serve a wide variety of food here, everything from charcuterie boards to pizza to empanadas. My friend and I came here for their daily happy hour (3-6 pm) for $2 off glasses/$6 off bottles, but we decided to each get a flight instead. I opted for the Aromatic White Flight ($20), which had three white wines from three different countries. The flight came in the cutest little glasses with labels underneath! None of the wines were overly sweet or overly dry, so it was a nice variety to sip on. For the record I'm a sucker for a wine tasting. What I truly enjoy about House Wine Austin is that it's the absolute perfect atmosphere to be educated while enjoying great vino! That said lets dive a little deeper into my experience. I got there for the opening which I recall was at 1pm. The quaint house with trees lazily overhanging the entrance and courtyard gave me the feeling I was entering a countryside bistro in France. Your senses are being massaged before you even step foot inside. That said, once inside it radiates comfort with small, separate areas consisting of high top tables on one side by the bar contrasted by couches with coffee tables on the other side. The only complaint I have is when I made the reservation I was anticipating "Old World" wine which was on my reservation only to have "New World" dominated by mostly white wines which doesn't suit my palette as well but I digress. The sommelier was extremely knowledgeable about all the wines. Moreover, I ordered the charcuterie board with cheeses and he suggested which wines would go with which foods and nailed every item. As for the food, of which I limited to small items was expertly prepared, fresh, and had a wonderful variety of meats, cheeses (I opted for 3), and other items. The wines were interesting as the journey started in Argentina with a Torrentes, then to South Africa for a Mourvedre then to California and a Brea Chardonnay. Rounding out the night we had a Livvera Beguignol from Argentian and ending with a Kiona Lemberger from Washington. Overall my date and I had a wonderful experience and she even bought me a bottle of the Washington wine! In summary I highly suggest Wine House for the ambiance as it really is a romantic and scenic endeavor. Next they have great small bites of high quality food. Finally the wine list is very well thought out with something for everyone while also offering wine tastings on a monthly basis. read more

I've been coming here on and off for the last 7 years and I've always had a great time. They sometimes have live music, which is great, and the staff are always knowledgeable and friendly. Parking can be a pain but if you're going to drink wine you should be unerring anyway so I can't complain too much there. I prefer dry red wines and I've never had a glass there that I didn't like. Yesterday, a friend and I shared a bottle of Argentinian Malbec with a charcuterie spread which we both enjoyed though some of the nuts were basically burnt. We sat outside because the weather was nice and for the music but there's also cozy, indoor seating. Such a cute wine bar hidden in Austin! I'm glad I was able to visit during my trip. There's different seating areas both indoors and outdoors. There was live music outside, which gave a relaxing vibe. We came on a Sunday night and they had 1/2 off on select bottles. We ordered a bottle of garnacha and it didn't disappoint. Would've been 5 stars but the Mediterranean plate was just not worth the price tag -- although all the items were good quality and flavor, the quantity was lacking. Only other complaint I have is the lack of parking -- there's only street parking but that is reasonable for the area.
