The Antonio's famous shish kabob was very tender and tasty, beef and chicken with peppers, onions, pineapple and mushrooms. we picked flour tortillas to go with the kabob. We shared this along with a couple a la carte ground beef enchiladas. The service was even better than the food. Until a few months ago, this place was really good with consistently great food and margaritas. It obviously has a new chef and the food is no longer as good, fresh and well prepared as it used to be. The margaritas are lacking in taste and presentation. There is not as much variety in menu selections. It was my go to place on Friday night, but now I no longer order food after consistently being disappointed week after week. I called and asked if there were mushrooms in the spinach enchiladas because I have an allergy. When my order was delivered, mushrooms was falling out of the enchiladas. Standard neighbourhood Tex-Mex spot for West U. I think this spot was another Mexican eatery before that but I can't for the life of me remember what it was (twenty years ago). That place had more of a chain quick eatery feel. There's really only one vegetarian dish here, the Spinach enchiladas, and you have to have the caveat of remembering that only the black beans are vegetarian for the side. The charro beans and refried have meat and lard respectively. The enchiladas are rich due to the cream sauce and the portions are good. I would say this is a better deal than Escalantes but that's about it. Service is friendly the several times I've been here. You get the sense they have a loyal following of gentrified regulars from the neighbourhood. Last time I went was during the ongoing pandemic so they did not have black beans for the side. I visited this establishment last Thursday evening. I was sitting with my back toward the street and had a clear view of the serving area in the kitchen. To my dismay, one of the waitresses took a napkin and went in her nasal cavity and threw the napkin in the trash. Proceeded to come out and assist a patron. I asked her was she going to wash her hands because she didn't. She said I used the hand sanitizer which I disagree. I kindly told the waitress to cancel my order and my party we left. I went back in to speak to a manager they said he wasn't there. I asked for contact info and after so long one of the patrons showed me where the card was with the owners contact info. I reached out to him and advised him what I witnessed he said he'd look at his cameras but never heard anything else. No worries , I won't be back. We like the little place but hand safety is important. It's really disgusting. Driving by this place many times, I finally made the stop for lunch. Walking in @ 1:10, I was surprised to see no other customers. After being promptly seated, two other parties arrived. The chips and warm salsa were served immediately with a cold glass of water (in a real glass). The chips are thin & crispy & not soaked in grease. The salsa is warm with a good flavor. I unwrapped the silverware from a cloth napkin. It was a nice touch that I didn't expect. I ordered the lunch #8, tacos regular. It is two crispy tacos (ground beef or shredded chicken), Spanish rice, charro beans, and pico de gallo. The beans were yummy. The rice was okay. It had the occasional pea, carrot, or corn kernel. The pico was on top of a lettuce pile which was good for adding more veggies to the tacos. I am glad I tried Antonio's Mexican Grille. I look forward to returning for happy hour! read more

Haven't been here since I first started my current job like 15 years ago when a few of us came while on lunch break. OMG idk why I haven't been back bcz this evening's welcoming service and scrumptiously delicious meal were perfect. Both waitresses were so warm and friendly, and sitting there, you can tell the community loves them and they love the community. Idk how I read the menu wrong and thought i saw and ordered stuffed avocado, but I guess the positive energy in this place knew exactly what I really needed. I was expecting a stuffed fried avocado but when my dinner arrived looking picture perfect, there was no way I wasn't going to enjoy it. It's not very often that I come across a Mexican food establishment that doesn't need a few shakes of salt to bring out the flavors. Antonio's didn't need any at all! Every item was flavored just right (chef's kiss), and the textures and consistencies were oh so nice. Oh, and they have these different flavors of hot sauce on the tables. LET ME TELL YOU!! The Mango Habenero and Papaya Habenero were the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. I can't wait to go back and try more on their menu. Oh, and I was going to see if I could buy a bottle of each hot sauce, but the manager told the waitress to give them to me complimentary. Very clean restaurant with great chips and salsa. The salsa is served warm and the chips are not greasy. I ordered spinach enchiladas with the black beans that are vegetarian. The generous plate includes two enchiladas, beans, rice and grilled veggies. Everything was delicious. I did ask them for little sauce on top of the enchiladas and should have also ordered little cheese. They are boat-loaded with cheese. First of all I have visited this restaurant several times now. I am so pleased with it! The food is wonderful and at a great price! The drinks are awesome too. They have sauces which are habanero based - I have tried them all! If you like hot sauce you gotta try these don't miss out! I like the papaya and mango ones the best! This place is super close to where we live, so I was optimistic. It's not bad, it's just not really that good. My husband and I went for dinner this past week and ordered: Stuffed Fajita Avocado Dinner Fajita a la Diabla Both were fine. The Stuffed Fajita isn't stuffed with anything, so I don't understand the name. It's chicken with avocado and cheese. I could make something very similar at home, and I can't cook that well, so it definitely was not worth the $15 for me. My husband said his fajita was fine but he said the tortillas tasted more like store-bought than homemade, and nothing was particularly special about his. They also only had a red salsa that was okay to start, and I much prefer a green one and have had many better red ones. read more

This was a pleasant surprise. I was on my way home and noticed this restaurant. It was right before game two of the Astros world series race. The place was not full and they had the game going. I was doing a take out. I had steak enchiladas and they were excellent! Also ordered some fish tacos and they appeared to be good as well given none were left over. The place was very comfortable and easy to sit and dine. The services while waiting was good but not great, could have offered me a drink while I was waiting like a soda or something. This is a very casual nice sized place. Very clean and appropriately decorated but the acoustics was aweful. Every sound, every conversation was amplified making it very loud so I wouldn't plan a quiet, romantic meal here. The waitress that served us didn't speak English very well so she didn't understand what we said a few times. But luckily my husband speaks Spanish. I felt like my kids were second class citizens with plastic dinner ware, cups and bar napkins and not even a kids menu to occupy them. Just a little detail I notice as a mom. THE FOOD!!! Was not anything worth the higher than normal prices. You can tell they did the best they could. It was hot and prepared nice and neat but the taste was NOT the best. Again not worth the prices. The fajita beef was a little too tough but the Pollo Rico had great flavor. The rice and beans were pretty delightful. The biggest let down of all was the PRICE and the DESSERT. I was so hopeful with the trio of cakes, even though they didn't have ice cream that came with. The cheesecake was store bought from any grocery you choose. And the other two (chocolate and carrot cake) was truly inedible. The carrot cake had to be cut with a knife and was full of all spice. It barely had any icing to offset the spice. As a chocolate lover...these people did chocolate a huge disgrace and I'm pained to even talk about it. So basically, I'm not going to eat here again. I just enjoy finding and trying new places. When a person who cannot eat the crispy ones because of their mouth they do not make allowances and give you soft ones, Kelly can cancel eight dollars for about a quarter cup. I received my food I asked for plastic ware I never received it the waitress never came by to ask if I need anything or refill on my water. When I paid for my tab I told the lady at the front desk that I never received my plastic wear I never received a refill on my water no one ever came to check on me at my table and the customer service was horrible she said absolutely nothing I would not be back at this place nor would I recommend to anyone. read more

I was craving Mexican food for lunch and saw this place on Google, I came here last minute and extremely happy I did! We sat at an outside table and were served with chips and salsa immediately by the waitress that was very nice. I'm a huge salsa critic and the red sauce was amazing! It was fresh and a little hint of spice to it. They do not serve green salsa, I was bummed about it but the red salsa was so good I forgot about my addiction to green salsa. We ordered steak and shrimp quesadillas and a plate of 3 chicken enchiladas. It all was amazing and cooked perfectly. Very happy we stopped into this authentic Mexican restaurant! I will be back! The food was actually really good. The salsa was warm and endless chips. I had a small serving of queso which was also really good. My friend had the shrimp tacos while I had the shrimp quesadillas. The shrimp were large and really fresh. Plenty to take home too. The prices were a little on the higher side, so I will probably try happy hour next time. read more

The tamale on my combo platter was beyond dried and was probably due to more than twice microwaved. In fact I had a hard time cutting into it with a knife. I showed the waitress and she apologized and offered an enchilada for a replacement. First, who ever was running the kitchen should have never allowed this to get out of the kitchen. A chef with pride should have quality control. The rest of the food was ok nothing special. I love charro beans but they lacked flavor and love. The salsa was warm so I give them that. I'm all for supporting small local businesses so I hope the owner takes time to correct quality control. If you're going to offer tamales they should be fresh. Chips and salsa at the table were pretty standard. I didn't feel that the salsa had a great flavor but did have a nice warmth. The menu itself has quite a bit to choose from. However the prices do not meet the standard of the food delivered. I can't help but think it's expensive only because of where it's located. Put this restaurant anywhere else and the prices would reflect the quality of the food. I would say overall nothing was terrible but it wasn't amazing either. I have made frequent trips to the Medical Center for more than 20 years. Sometimes, my wife accompanies me. It is now a tradition to stop at Antonio's on our way home. How many of those 20+ years has Antonio's been part of our life? Dunno, but surely more than ten. We have always enjoyed our meals. I cannot think of a single thing that was ever wrong, when we ate there. Since I can be pretty picky and I do tend to focus on negative things, being unable to recall anything to carp about tells me there never was one. Our late afternoon visit on 3/29/2017 wasn't merely "the usual" we now expect, but a cut above. The first thing I noticed as we entered is that it seemed much smaller. Odd. A Yelp review comments on the good use of space. I guess that's why I expected this so-familiar place to be larger. Maybe, too, the shape looks especially wide, as you walk up to it. I think we parked farther away than usual, giving more time to contemplate what we were approaching. Silly, but "smaller" was the impression I got, going in the door. For no particular reason, we sat at probably the only table we've ever used there, unless we went when it was crowded. It was exactly as ordinary and normal as a visit could be. Then came the food. The chips may be the thinnest in captivity. The salsa, as usual, warm and spicy. Not spicy hot; rather, very delicately tasty. I can't tolerate much chili/pepper heat. Where we last ate Mexican, the salsa was what many might call "mild," and certainly no hotter than "medium." Yet, it was so spicy I could only eat a few chips, and had to stop. We pretty much wiped out the salsa at Antonio's. We ordered a couple of batches of salsa and chips to bring home. Our meals were great. My wife had the Stuffed Fajita Avocado Dinner. Either they changed the recipe or she had it somewhere else, previously. She couldn't remember, and it doesn't matter. The effect was fine. It was exactly as described on the menu: slabs of fajitas stuffed with avocado slices. Apparently, she had avocados which were literally stuffed with fajitas, somewhere. For some reason, she was given the option of charro beans. My Especial Dinner only offered the options of borracho or refried beans. I chose borracho, and they were good. A restaurant which went out of business possibly before we ever ate at Antonio's had the best beans in the world, ever. A few -- two or maybe three -- restaurants have come close in the decades since. So, unless they are really bad or bland, all beans are okay with me since they can't measure up to the long gone ideal. Unfortunately, Antonio's is not among the one or two that come close. Yes, I know the difference between charro and borracho. I merely threw that in, to see if you were paying attention. I don't think I have eaten at more than one or two Mexican restaurants where the rice was the tiniest bit above average. Plenty of bad rice out there, and average prevails. The rice at Antonio's, this time, seemed a cut above. My beef taco was exquisite. You can't be born within a few miles of the Rio Grande, and survive well into adulthood in that cultural wasteland without eating a taco or two. This one was superb. The meat was chopped up chunks, rather than the more prosaic ground beef. The enchilada seemed somehow a bit better than usual. I can't explain why. I waited too long to get around to the chalupa, so moisture (From the enchilada or taco?) had made one edge a little soggy, and detracted from a couple of bites. That the rest was properly crispy told me it was just something that happened on the plate. The small picky flaw did not mar the taste and texture of the other bites. The whole dining experience simply seemed somewhat special. Not remembering exactly when we had been there last, I asked the waitress if they had gotten a new chef in the past year or so, and she said they hadn't. Maybe the entire experience was heavily influenced by perception, for some reason. Reading the menu, it seemed like the prices were a little higher than I remembered. My wife commented on the price, as well. Two thoughts on my own picky observation: First, some things are simply worth whatever they cost. This meal was one of those things. Sure. If it hadn't been so good, my attitude might be a little different. Second, we don't always have one to use, but for this trip, I had an Entertainment coupon book discount offer which took the sting out of the price. I gave our book to some friends, and the new one I ordered hasn't come yet. But, Antonio's had a coupon on the telephone app which -- had we chosen cheaper stuff -- would have cut the price of the meal in half. The music was at the perfect level. I didn't even notice it until a song by Pandora came on. Like icing on a cake. Perfect. Doctors give little kids lollipops. Stopping at Antonio's occasionally is like getting a lollipop for being a good boy at the hospital. read more
