I had a great lunch experience at Los Tios! They have a really good selection of lunch menu options, which made it easy to find something without feeling overwhelmed. A Houston treasure for classic Houston style Tex-Mex. At one time the Houston style of puffy and crispy queso "balloons" and tacos was most common. Places closed, lamentably Loma Linda, resulting in only three places that still do the classic Houston style. This historically significant restaurant is a "must" for any aficionado of classic Tex-Mex. For those who don't know me, I had the pleasure of researching and recipe testing for The Tex-Mex Cookbook by Robb Walsh. I maintain a collection of vintage Tex-Mex at Tex-Mex Vintage and Retro Menus and Memorabilia (f**eb**k) that included early menus from Los Tios. Several years ago I wrote this Houston Press review. A Tale of Two Taco Plates Avatar photo HOUSTON PRESS OCTOBER 12, 2008 I recently entertained an out-of-town food writer who had been contracted to write on Tex-Mex in San Antonio and Houston. Although he was very personable and fun to hang out with, I knew of his notoriety of writing really negative reviews about things that others held dear. When we met up he had already sampled Irma's spinach enchiladas, which he liked. I took him to a favorite place for enchiladas, and he wasn't impressed. Over the next day or so he hit 5 different places, none of which he liked, all of which I do. Our last meal was at the original Ninfa's on Navigation for some excellent fajitas and a flan that was so delicious, I had to seek out the recipe on the Web and make it two days later. I really didn't want to be an apologist for Houston Tex-Mex. But his disenchantment got me to thinking how much my appreciation of Houston Tex-Mex is equal parts food, history and restaurant ambiance. And being a non-native, this didn't have much cachet with him (different cultural map I guess). That night at Ninfa's I decided to direct him to check out two upscale Tex-Mex places, places that I know of but never go to, Armando's and Escalante's. Well, he never made it to them so we'll never know. Time to try Escalante's for myself then. I thought it might be fun to compare the crispy tacos at Escalante's and Los Tios, which are basically across the street from each other on Beechnut at Meyerland. Escalante's Taco Plate Escalante's gets a big thumbs-up for atmosphere, friendly service and food presentation. It's a well illuminated (from the ambient light and the interior lighting) restaurant with attractive paintings and memorabilia everywhere. The kind of place one might take an out-of-town food writer. The tacos come in their own cute little stand and the rice and beans are tasty enough. The tacos themselves have a thin shell and are reminiscent of a Taco Bell taco or those grocery store El Paso shells. On the plus side, the taco meat is not overly salty. On the minus side, it's pretty bland and I had to touch them up with some black pepper and hot sauce. With tax and tip my meal came in at $12.50. A similar order of three tacos with rice and beans would be under $5.00 at Taco Bell. Los Tios Taco Plate Los Tios has its own charm. It's a little dark and the interior is very woody. The waitstaff is great there too. Los Tios is one of only two places left in Houston that still make the crispy style tacos that I remember from my youth. To the best of my knowledge they're unique to Houston (please correct me if you've seen them anywhere else) and if I had my way, every Houston restaurant would make these. The trick to making these is that you have to use freshly ground yellow corn masa for your tortilla. When it goes into the hot oil, there's enough moisture to allow for the tortilla to separate and puff up. The taco meat was perfectly seasoned. I ordered two but could have easily downed a dozen of the wonderful little crunch machines. With tax and tip my meal came in under $7.00 for two tacos. I'll be the first to agree that it's not altogether fair to judge Escalante's solely on its tacos. And I would gladly eat there again. But let's face it, Los Tios kicks ass -- Jay Francis read more

Los Tios Meyerland is a great spot that exudes that Old school Tex Mex elegance of the 70's and 80's. It's a neighborhood staple and has been my family's go to spot when we're in the Meyerland area since 1989! I love the service model of these Tex Mex places, every body always asks if you need something not just the waiter. This go round I had the shrimp enchiladas with charro beans and an Ultimate Margarita. My wife had the #6 Combo with cheese enchiladas, puffy queso, and crispy taco. Shrimp Enchiladas are my usual order and it was great as always. The shrimp were crisp and fresh not rubbery or overcooked and the cream sauce and melted cheese on top was rich and flavorful. The Ultimate Margarita was amazing, not too tequila forward and didn't taste like premade mix. My wife loved the puffy queso and cheese enchiladas, I ate her taco and finished off the rest of her plate too. My final note, visit these old school tex mex places while you can because one day they'll be gone, or worse open a trendy rebrand. Then all that's left will be huge corporate chains like Gringo's. read more

I really love the food here! The tacos are always my go to, super flavorful and fresh. Their drinks are always tasty and the service is great. This place is in a shopping center so parking is kind of limited on busy days, but it's worth looking for a spot. On the inside, the restaurant is spacious and the decor is super lively. Who doesn't love chips dip and a good margarita! This Los Tios is one of the OG locations. This location is cozy presenting on the inside and actually has a lot more space than expected. Service is routine as in not bad but not above and beyond. This is definitely a popular location for the locals and they likely get a lot of regulars so no extra pizaz needed. Any who. I ordered fish tacos and my friend ordered enchiladas. Everything was good and I especially love the chips and salsa that is provided. I love a fresh tortilla chip. Our group of 3 came here one Saturday evening and it was a popular place for dinner! Firstly, I love their giant decorated Christmas tree near the front entrance - lovely! We were seated right away and the hostess and waitress were very friendly. Our waitress checked in with us throughout our stay, but not too much (which I always appreciate). After a large lunch, I opted for queso as my meal and some drinks. The reason for my 4 stars is because the queso was lacking in flavor. I have been eating at this restaurant for over 30 years, but would not eat there again. I had lunch at the Meyerland location on March 29, 2026. Within about one and a half hours of eating I became very nauseated, which lasted into the early evening. I felt terrible for the next two days. Based on an analysis of my situation, I believe I was given food that was contaminated by a handler who did not properly wash their hands or the food preparation surface was contaminated. I called the restaurant the next day to report the incident. They did not seem concerned and never called me back as promised. read more

Me and my girlfriend decided too eat lunch here on Saturday March 28th because the previous time was amazing and our server was great, this time was horrible. 1st and foremost the host wasn't inviting at all, we were sat down and our server Palma P had a very bad energy around us. He asked us what we would like too drink and right when we were about to read off the alcoholic beverages , he said he'd be back with water while we look, basically wasn't being patient with us. We order 3-4 times per month from Los Tios both in house and delivery. The food is always consistent and delicious, and the service is always friendly and professional. Tonight we added on a couple of margaritas to our delivery order of which were missing when the delivery driver arrived. The driver insisted on verifying my ID, even though they weren't delivering our drinks. The didn't even seem concerned, nor did they offer to go back to the restaurant and redeliver, just insisted they needed my ID and that I should call the restaurant to let them know. Hmmm... I called Los Tios and they were immediately apologetic. Instead of offering me a refund, the front desk manager checked if an employee could deliver our drinks with another manager volunteering to do so. I certainly didn't expect that and was only going to ask for a refund. We had our delicious margaritas within 15 minutes!! Gracious and accommodating and we will ALWAYS be regular customers! I used to come here as a kid with my mom and grandma, but we quit going after she passed away. 10 years later and we finally made our way back. We weren't sure what to expect as far as quality, but we were absolutely blown away. The food was delicious. We came for lunch and it was pretty busy. While out and about in Houston today with my fam, my travels brought me in the vicinity of a Los Tios. Nostalgia overcame me, and I was very giddy. Yes, I did say giddy. The wife and kiddos wanted something from another chain restaurant, so after some convincing, I changed their minds. Los Tios has been around Houston for a very long time, and I have very fond memories with my grandparents here as a child. It has been decades since I have stepped foot in one, so I was hoping nothing had changed. The fam and I walked in the lobby. This place is exactly as I remember it. Not a thing has changed. Today the restaurant was not busy, and no one was at the front host stand. I was hoping this was not a bad sign. After peeking around the corner to get someone's attention, a waiter saw me and promptly seated us. We were seated in a booth, and handed menus. Our drink orders were taken, and we perused the menu. Lots of good choices here. While we waited for our drinks we were brought chips, salsa, and tomatillo sauce. One thing that will tell you right away if a Mexican food joint is any good is the chips and salsa. The chips set the tone for me, and if they are terrible, I'm out. I got a chip, dunked it in the salsa, took a bite, and was impressed. They taste just the same as they did last time I went! In good time, our drinks arrived and our order was taken. The wife opted for the chicken street tacos and I opted for combo #3. A puffy queso, a cheese enchilada, guacamole salad, and a side of rice and beans. The kiddos got a grilled cheese, and puffy queso. After some trips down memory lane with my kiddos, our food arrived in good time. Nice and hot and presented very well. All of us starved, we jumped right in. The kiddos loved their food (and my youngest says their grilled cheese was the best) and mine was delicious. I really enjoyed my puffy queso and was glad to see it was puffy, and not just a taco salad chip turned over with queso on it. My enchilada was great, and regretted not getting two. The guacamole was a bit too tangy and had too much lime in it. Still, not bad though. I cleaned my plate. The wife was not too impressed with the chicken street tacos and said they lacked flavor. She said they were bland and she wished she ordered something else. Overall, we all were happy and satisfied. My dish was excellent and I left very happy. Visited here for a large Houston grandmother's reunion. The place is nice and clean. Arrived and told we could have coffee but there wasn't enough to go around. They sat us at our area and took our drink orders that never arrived for a lot of us. The service was very slow and inconsistent. Drinks ordered were not brought out after requesting them again. Had to drink water. Ordered coffee at the table and they said they ran out of cups. WTH? No cups?? Food smelled good but not the best. The flour tortillas looked and smelled amazing.
