This world needs more people like Richard Cornell. I found Richard on Yelp and texted him about my two garage remotes not working. He was quick to respond and suggested a few issues that the garage or remote could be experiencing. He offered to come by the next day (Sunday) to check it out. When I asked how much the cost of his visit would be, he responded by saying that he probably wouldn't charge anything if he just needed to reprogram the remotes. The following day, Richard showed up exactly when expected and got to work immediately. In less than ten minutes, he not only resolved my issue, but he also changed out my dead garage light bulbs (they were dead before I purchased the house and I wasn't aware that they existed), lubed all of the hinges on the garage door (oohhh, so THAT's why it was making that dying animal noise...), and programmed my car's garage opener. Everything was done on his own accord- I never had to ask for a thing. This is a man who seriously knows a thing or two about customer service. I've always fancied the idea that garage door opener companies should employ the hair salon ideal when naming themselves - something like naming their business 'What Goes Up Must Come Down' or 'Coming Down With Something: Something Like Your Garage Door" or "Going Places: Mostly Up and Down Places." You get the idea. An interesting fact that I never knew prior to buying my home is that those giant coils that support the weight of your rising or descending door? They snap over time, and when they do, brother, you don't want to be anywhere near 'em. So my garage door coil snapped, and I had to get it fixed in a jiffy. Seeing as I'm roughly as conversant in garage repair as Bob Villa is at origami, I sought expert help. Although who knows, maybe Bob can really crank out some paper birds. I digress. Cornell showed up, assessed the situation, and had the whole to-do wrapped up in a relatively short period later that afternoon. And my garage door now? Flies open and shuts like a champ -- he even tweaked the original setup so the bottom of the door better marries with the pavement below, which isn't as easy as it sounds. In a nutshell: I couldn't be happier with my opener or the installation, but this review is about the installation. Made an appointment during the week for the following weekend. Richard showed up on Saturday morning and was done within a couple of hours. While he was installing the opener, I made a quick run to Home Depot to buy a light socket plug adapter since my garage isn't equipped with a plug in the ceiling (something I didn't even think about until Richard asked, "have you thought about how you're going to power the opener?") If you go this route, make sure you also buy the 2-prong to 3-prong gray adapter. Going this route is much cheaper than buying an extension cord. Installation was cheaper than Lowe's--$100 (I actually didn't consider having anyone else do the installation after reading the great reviews here but happened to see online that Lowe's charges more than that). After reading some online product reviews, I chose and bought the opener at Lowe's, probably spending more than I needed to went with one that was in stock. After programming the remotes included with the opener, Richard asked if I had a remote installed in my car and programmed that for me too. Now who will get my other two remotes? When I built my house 4 years ago my builder installed a state of the art Wayne Dalton iDrive garage door opener that turned out to be the biggest POS known to man. Not surprising the company yanked them not too far after being on the market and not surprising that my builder (who is now defunct) continued to install them. It never worked properly and a few months ago went out all together. Worse, my cable was messed up so I couldn't even manually get my door to open. After spending months of dragging my trash can through my house and down my front steps to put on the curb for weekly pick-up I decided it was time to invest in a new garage door opener and cable. I have two garage doors. The one on the right hasn't worked since I bought my house. The one on the left worked, but my car was pretty crappy and my garage was full of junk so I never used the garage for parking. Well this past October, I bought a new black Honda Insight. And yes, buying a black car in Austin might not have been the smartest choice, but it was a good deal. The biggest problem is I have an oak tree over my driveway and if I park in my drive way, my car ends up being yellow from all the pollen. So, I cleaned up my garage and started using my garage door. The garage door worked for a few months and then it suddenly quit. The motor was 23 years old, so I guess it had a good life. I called up Richard at Cornell Garage Doors. He told me what motors I should buy and quoted me on how much it would cost for him to install. The installation took about 2 hours. Now I have two working garage doors, with belts instead of chains so I won't wake up the neighborhood when I get in late. Richard helped me set my keypad and explained how all the new parts worked. My old doors were so old I didn't even have the sensors. All in all, it was a nice, quick job at a reasonable rate. My garage door opener stopped working on Monday morning. I called Richard and from the get go it was a great experience. Before he even offered to come out he had me check a couple of common problems. Unfortunately, it was not a common problem, however, Richard made it out to my house the same day to check things out further. He attempted to swap out the motor which did not fix the problem. Finally, he tried switching out the logic board with a scrap one he had in his truck. This didn't fix the problem either, which meant that the opener was dead. Richard gave me a few options for replacements. I could buy my own and he would install it for a hundred bucks, or he could get me a professional liftmaster for a bit more. I opted for the belt driven professional liftmaster so it would be more quiet. Richard came back out on Friday since I was having other work done and would be home. He showed up on time, and had everything installed and tweaked in a couple hours. When he was done he walked me through the whole system and gave me some maintenance tips to keep the new unit happy. I was incredibly happy with the work done and would recommend Richard to anyone needing garage door repairs or installations. read more

tl;dr: Cornell is LEGIT, easy to work with, and gets it done right. One of the springs on my garage broke a few months ago, and I've been putting off replacing it. I also had an old door that was showing its age, so I figured I'd just get a new one while someone was here. I wrote to the company via Yelp on Wednesday afternoon, and got a reply almost right away. I sent over my information that evening, and got a call Thursday morning. Richard was able to get the door I needed, and then have it installed on Friday afternoon. It's amazing. He was quick to reply, professional, and easy to talk to. I can't imagine this process being any better. He got my garage door installed for me, hauled off the old door, and even gave me some tips about how to better use my opener. Plus, it looks great. Super pleased!! Richard was fantastic and gave me the lowest quoted price after I phoned four other top-rated Yelp garage door companies (who were also great over the phone). Unfortunately, I caused my own garage door problems when I opened it after putting away Christmas boxes in a spot I shouldn't have, too close to the track on the top shelf. This caused the door to hit the box and go uneven, and the cable came off the drum. I left a message with Richard Tuesday evening about 5pm and he gave me a ring back 20 minutes later. Since he was my last call, could come the next day, and gave the lowest price, I went with him. He accommodated my late appt time request (5pm) and even though I was 10 minutes late, he was great about it. This is important to me because I work nights and I was able to send him an e-mail . I told him when I would be free, and I told him to contact me when he was available. And he did. Promptly. I've used Richard regularly in the past, with a number of rental properties as well as my own home. However, the past 4 times I've called, I didn't receive a reply for 3-4 days, and then only after I had to call a second time and leave an irate message. This most recent encounter, I am still waiting for a return call a full week after my first message. One of his phone lines (why two different numbers??) now yields a "mailbox is full" response when attempting to leave a message. Richard, when/if he shows up, does good work and reasonable, but as far as I am concerned, a business that won't return phone calls in a timely fashion is useless to me (unless it's my brother-in-law). I'm done with Cornell Garage. I can't ask a tenant to wait a week until Richard finally (if ever) gets around to responding to phone messages. This is NOT a business.. just a guy with a truck who can fix your door if you can track him down. I've had my new garage door from Cornell for almost a week now and couldn't be happier with the quality of the door, the service, and the price. Brent initially came out about a month ago to replace a broken tension spring on my garage door. During the service, he informed me the old wood door (which original to the house) was, literally, on its last hinge and we be a good candidate for replacement. (Normally, I shun this sort of added work, but the old door made horrible and my Wife and I had been thinking about getting it replaced at some point anyway.) The real selling point for, though, was that Brent would deduct the price of the work already done that day (around $200 for the new spring and labor) and apply it towards the new door. Simply put: it was a deal too good to pass up. I paid a little over $800 total (which includes the $200 previously paid) to get a brand new double metal door installed, including windows, with all the work done in a few hours while I was at work. All I had to do was make the payment--it was as simple as that. Garage doors are one of those things that look extremely simple, but can be extremely dangerous to repair yourself. If you're in the need of garage door repair yourself, and want it done right by knowledgeable friendly people, I can't recommend Cornell Garage Doors enough! read more

My garage door opener has been getting worse at closing over the past year or so, usually requiring me to hold the button down until it's all the way down--and this must be done from inside the garage, not the car. I'd put up with this problem for a long time so I was in no hurry to get it fixed. But I definitely wanted to. However, my work schedule is not very flexible. Well, I didn't hear from him on 1/2, so called another repair service, whose VM said they would not be in that day, as it was the holiday. Hey, that's understandable, you never know who is taking a holiday and who isn't. It was nice to have the VM tell me, so I wasn't wondering. This morning, I called Richard again, and again got VM. I repeated my message from 1/1, and told him I wanted to get this fixed today, if at all possible. Two hours later, after no response, I called one of Richard's competitors, and had the spring fixed 90 minutes later. He showed up, took one look at the bent door and unattached arm, and said he knew exactly how to fix it. Sure enough, an hour later he was finished, having also adjusted a coil, a plate at the bottom of the door which had been improperly installed, and a hanging cable. Oh yeah, and he still charged me what he had quoted me before all the extra stuff. He was also professional and very friendly, thankfully ignoring the used condom one of the other condominium residents indelicately left in the parking lot. It's also worth mentioning that they have a six-month labor warranty on their work if something goes wrong. Needless to say, if I ever need any work done again, I'm calling Cornell. (Though I don't know much about garage door repair, the price seemed way reasonable, especially given that I thought they might have to replace a panel.
