Great guy - I'm glad that I called him. One of my two doors was sticking, and I had cranked up the force so that it would open. Since the motor was grunting n groaning to open, I thought that I should have someone take a look at it, so I called Cornell. He quoted me a service call price over the phone and came out the next Monday. As soon as he arrived, we spotted the broken spring/ I asked him to check the other door as well, and that door had two broken springs. I was bracing for a huge bill - service call and three broken springs - yikes! But Richard was very fair He provided me with a very nice reduction in the labor and a very fair price - I was surprised that it wasn't substantially more. He did a great job, oiled up everything, adjusted both doors, and motors. He even checked every screw on the door to be sure that they were all tight. Before he left, he showed me how to maintain the springs and wheels, and said if I had any problems at all, that he would come back out and resolve it for no charge. He called about 30 minutes before the scheduled time to give me an update and a heads up when he would arrive. One note, he is a one-person shop and I see that at least one reviewer was perturbed that no one answered the office phone. Well, he works on his own and does his own service calls - makes answering the phone a little hard. Cornell Garage Doors will not let you down. 3 years ago my girlfriend was in need of new garage doors. After researching we decided to give Cornell our business. Richard came out and quickly demonstrated he was exceptionally knowledgeable. His pricing was excellent and he did an A-1 job on the install. As I to was in the market for garage doors and openers I had Richard come out and give me an estimate. Being the crazy research nut when I purchase anything I found a company in New England that was producing a new type of door that seemed interesting. I told Richard about this and he took the initiative to call the owner of this company and find out more. At the end of the day I didn't go with this new product, but was impressed that Richard took the time to find out more. To end my story I opted not to get new doors at that time, but last year I had Richard rebuild my existing doors and install two new openers. This was a challenging job due to an unfortunately placed cross beam in my garage. Richard was able to work around this by choosing a Lift Master Screw Drive unit that he was able to modify to work in this situation. To end my story the openers both failed just after my one year warranty expired. Richard determined that his modifications were not 100% perfect and most likely contributed to the failure. As this was a unique installation it is quite understandable that things like this could go wrong. That being said, Richard fixed the doors at no cost to me and is doing all he can to make the job perfect.. I truly appreciate great customer service and commitment to doing things the right way. Richard is the man!! I needed my garage door raised from 8' to 9' so that I could install a four post lift to work on my cars. I called the first number I saw in google-Precision. The tech came and told me that i would need all new parts for my (brand new) garage door as it was not safe....raising the door and making it safe would only be 900.... Turned off, I called Richard due to reviews on Yelp. he came and did it for about $200 that day and its perfect! He even came back for a slight adjustment. Summary: He's got 4.5 stars for good reason. Call him up. Details: I called up Richard to install a garage door opener that I'd lost the motivation to install myself. He was able to come over immediately, but when he started to point out the tons of other things wrong with the door, I thought he was going for an upcharge. Not the case - he just takes great pride in doing a good job - it's as if he takes offense to something not being done right - and it's all included in his (VERY) fair charges - balancing the door, adjusting spring tension, screwing in things more securely that would be acceptable simply clamped in. He's also done this a fair bit, knows products inside out, and has an honest vibe about him (how many home service pros can you say that about?) My ratings are perhaps a bit 5-star inflated, but this guy deserves every bit of those five. read more

The previous owners of our house did some spotty DIY. One day the garage door stopped working. It turns out the previous owners, besides placing the laser eyes on the ceiling, didn't put any springs in when they installed the garage door. Richard showed up the day after I called him, exactly on time. He installed springs, added a support bar that straightened out a dent in the garage door, and greased everything up. All of this took about half an hour. Afterwards, he charged me exactly what he estimated, gave me some advice about how to maintain the door, and offered to come back and place the laser eyes in the correct spot for free if we ever did the necessary remodeling. Richard rocks! We had a small crack in our garage door when we bought it over 4 years ago, but the door seemed to function fine. But that changed about a week ago, and the door started getting in a bind when trying to open or close. Fully expecting a royal reaming for this repair, I called Cornell hoping that their high ratings were accurate. And in the end, they certainly were! Richard came out the next day, saw exactly what the problem was, and was able to fix the door with some additional struts rather than having to replace it altogether (that was my biggest fear). In addition, he performed preventative maintenance, and altogether did a fantastic job. He's a straight shooter, does excellent work, and charges very fairly for his work. I can tell you that if we have any other problems, I would call him in a heart beat, and I would recommend him to anyone that needs work on their garage door. You won't be disappointed. read more

After reading many of the stellar reviews on Cornell, I gave them a call to fix my busted garage door. I have a single 16x7 overhead door where the cables had slipped and tension was lost on the spring. The door had come down at an angle, and it took me over an hour to get it seated to the ground. An attempt to reseat the cables failed. What was an intractable job for me, Brent from CGD fixed in 20 minutes! After the work was finished, Brent thoroughly reviewed what he had done (and detailed on the invoice). He was honest in stating that over time what I experienced does happen, but with proper care for the door, cables and spring to help avoid the issue arising too soon. On top of the excellent work, CGD guarantees it for one year, and charges a great rate. When it comes time to install an automatic opener, I know who I'll call. We had a great experience with Cornell Garage Doors. Installing Garage door openers for the first time on our daughter's 1984 home seemed difficult, but they made it easy. I had to arrange it from out of state, and the communication was great. Richard was on vacation, but Emmett spoke with me and told me the exact brand and features of the garage opener to buy. They were $179 at Lowe's, which we ordered online. We arranged the install for a specific date and time when I would be visiting. He phoned on the appointment day to ask if he could come 45 minutes early, which worked out great. Quality of the install was top notch, and the price very reasonable. He cleaned up well and gave us the clickers (which he had programmed to cover both doors) and the instruction manual/warranty card. Attempted to leave the house only to find that the door only went up partially before calling it quits. Went on Yelp and checked through who other people were recommending. Happy to say that all of the positive reviews about Cornell Garage Doors are accurate. Richard called me back promptly, asked me about what was going and set up an appointment time. Then he showed up ON TIME! Promptness is always so appreciated. We went over the garage door problems and he set off to work. An hour later, my garage door was fixed. Better yet, Richard took the time to explain what had happened, how to prevent it in the future and how to fix it in the future. Yes, he told me how to fix it in the future so I wouldn't have to call again about the same problem. AWESOME! He's also a local business owner, very friendly and honest. Richard was great. I called after 5 on Thursday and he was there by 10 on Friday morning. He not only repaired what he quoted but also checked the entire garage door system and made adjustments to make it operate better and safely...without adding to the price. Very appreciative of his prompt and professional service. In addition to repairing my problem and making adjustments, he also took the time to educate me on how to keep my system properly maintained...which I did not know how to do and was what led me to need his service in the first place. I hope I do not need him again any time soon but he will be the only person I call and will definitely refer to my friends! It's important to point out for those that complained about response...you call, you get Richard. If he isn't available, you will not get him. I would much rather support a small shop that has reasonable prices than a large operation that has to charge more to cover overhead. Excellent service! We found Cornell Garage Doors on Yelp when of the springs broke on our garage door, and requested a quote. Richard Cornell responded with a very reasonable quote within an hour, and arrived soon after. He certainly knew what he was doing, and explained it all to us as he went along, so that we'd know why some parts were replaced while others were still in great shape and could be kept. After reading the Google and Yelp reviews I decided to go with Cornell. I found the person who answered the phone to be both courteous and professional. When Brent was on his way (looks like Richard is expanding), he called me well in advance, which was really nice. Fixed my broken spring and bent rails. He even talked me into going with a lower priced option (one spring as opposed to two). He also gave me some awesome maintenance tips on how to keep the springs going and more advice than I asked for (but was happy to have) on the overall state of the garage door system including the motor, etc. The price was fair--I know I could have paid less for JUST a spring repair, but I'm really happy to keep passionate professionals in business and not risk being delayed again by a bum garage door. UPDATE: I already gave Richard a stellar review the first time so, just coming back with more of the same. :) When he came out last year he said the spring would be the next thing to go and lo and behold - a few weeks ago it did just that. I called Richard and he was out that afternoon, fixed the spring in about 45 minutes and for a decent price. That's about as easy and painless as it gets. Awesome. Richard was super nice, pleasant, easy to work with and knows what he is doing! He installed a new garage door opener for me with keypad, changed the light, showed me how it all works, charged me a decent price and did it quickly! Something strange was going on with it several months later (not to do with his install...it was on someone else's frequency) and I just called him to ask about it and he told me over the phone how I could reset it. I'm not sure I can say enough good things about Richard at Cornell Garage Doors in the space allotted by Yelp. First of all, I tried calling around town to get our Wayne Dalton garage door springs replaced only to find out that there really is only one company that services these and the cost is approximately $275 (minimum) for the fix. That company wasn't able to get us in for almost a week (yeah, there's a holiday in between there, but still... a week?!). So my husband paroozed Yelp and found Cornell. It's pretty rare to find such high ratings on Yelp and such positive reviews unless its and upstanding company. That's exactly what I found with Richard's company. I called Richard yesterday (12/30) in the afternoon and explained our issue to him. Unfortunately he doesn't service the Wayne Dalton's either but he suggested that we consider moving to the more traditional torsion spring systems. Most of the time when you call someone they are kinda short and really just want to get the appointment scheduled but that wasn't the case with Richard. I called him at least three times over the course of about 45 minutes to ask him a bunch of questions. He was not only patient but I found that his knowledge and explanation was great for someone that doesn't necessarily understand the inner workings of garage door spring systems. By the end of the call, we were sold on doing the conversion and decided that long term, it would be the most cost effective option and felt like he was the best person do to the work. Richard said he could be out at our house at 3:30 the next day (today - New Years Eve) and he was here right on time (he even called to let us know he was on the way). He was prepared and it was obvious that he knew exactly what he was doing. He was very friendly and carried on conversation with us that felt almost like we'd known him for a long time. You rarely get that with someone that comes to do work on your house. I should also mention that he was pretty quick too. I think he was at our house for an hour or less. I can almost always find one or two things that would prevent me from giving someone a 5 star review, but I just can't find anything. I spoke to Bo when I called this morning for a repair. He said they can come the next day. I asked if they could come today because I was already home from work. My garage door had a broken spring about 3 weeks ago. I called Cornell after reading positive reviews, I'm pleased to further recommend their services. Brent promptly came out, same day service. He fixed the original problem, and when trying to re-connect the garage door opener...we were presented with another problem, which was related to the original install of the opener. Brent tried to remedy the situation at the time with another motor, but we found out the model opener I had does not have an "anything' replacement part...and needed a direct from manufacturer motor. This was easier found, than actually finding! Stuck for a bit, Cornell and Brent took extra time to track down the motor and even going so far as to contact multiple businesses for a replacement part. In the end, the unit was actually under warranty and a replacement part was sent from the manufacturer. This process took a while, but not due to any delay from Cornell Garage. When the motor arrived, Brent was quickly at the house to install...while also making necessary adjustments to the door to make it even better. During the delay in receiving the part, Cornell Garage did not charge...nor mention charging...until the "complete" repair was done. Highly impressed with Brent and the professionalism of Cornell Garage. 5 stars...with a better than strong recommendation. read more

Richard is by far the best person I've ever done any kind of service / repair business with. My garage door was on its last leg and I couldn't get it closed. On the same day - within the hour - he was here. Now, the tension cable has been repaired. The tracks have been straightened and anchored correctly. Old roller wheels have been replaced. And loose brackets have been either replaced or repaired. I didn't have to bankrupt myself for the service either. read more

Within the last year, Richard helped us figure out that we needed a new garage door opener as the previous one had burnt out controls. He was honest about the variety of options and worked with us and within our budget. Since that time, the actual door started to make popping noises and we determined we needed some screws replaced. Richard worked us quickly into his schedule. The same day he was to show up, as I was leaving the house, without using the remote, my garage door opened all by itself! He explained this can happen if neighbors have openers with the same frequency. At any rate, he came to the house, fixed the door AND gave us instructions on how to reprogram the remotes (which gave a a lot of piece of mind knowing it wouldn't just open sometime when we were gone.)
