With a hankering for something spicy, decided to try Anar by ordering in their Lamb Kalimirch Lunch Special, which I ended up enjoying. This flavorful curry came in a helpful bento box style container, keeping separate the flavorful Tellicherry black pepper curry, vegetable curry side, and white rice with dal. I'm really disappointed with this place. I came here hungry and Yelp also led me to believe this place is good. This place lacks flavor in everything. I had some of the worst chicken curry I've ever had. Lacking complete flavor. The chicken wasn't even enjoyable. My Lamb karma was extremely chewy. The sauce on that was actually good, but that was the highlight of the meal sadly was the sauce. We got the Samosa chaat as an appetizer. Kind of like Indian nachos in a way. That was good. But our entrées were totally awful. Good None. I feel usually like Indian food is always good, until I come to this place. It lacked flavor, lacked the Indian spice that I know in love, and that is common in a lot of restaurants, and I was super letdown when I was super hungry and spent $65 on a meal that wasn't good in New York City. I ordered a vegetable samosa, vegetable pakora, and paneer tikka masala. All of this cost about $30, which I thought was a little pricey for how much I got... well that's new york lol! There were a lot of people here when I walked by. My friend and I decided to try this place and were seated right away at the only open table. Appetizer 4/5 Samosa chaat - my favorite of everything we ordered. Its essentially a deconstructed samosa with sauces on top. Very flavorful, a little too much flavor actually. It could use a little more carbs to balance out each bite. Would totally order this again. Entree 4/5 Chicken tikki masala - sweeter than expected, good flavor. I enjoyed this. Would not order again Other 2.5/5 Mango lassi - this was fine. I expected the first sip to be more refreshing than it was. It got pretty sweet 1/3 of the way through. I didn't end up finishing it 3/5 Rosemary naan - never seen this anywhere! Was pretty excited for this but the rosemary didnt make much of a difference They advertise BYOB. The table next to us finished two bottles of wine! We were here for about two hours. It was a really pleasant atmosphere to chat in despite it being a little loud. The staff was extremely nice though! The best thing on the menu that we got was the garlic naan. It was garlicky, the bread was soft. We did enjoy their fish dish :) but their combo plate had various meats that were pretty tough, and were overwhelming in flavor. I'm incredibly disappointed by the service and an incident that happened here. It is enough to not want to return. I feel like when you see staff that really cares, it speaks of the business. Unfortunately this did not happen. We arrived at 9pm this Friday evening. As soon as I walked in the door, I told the waiter that it was my Mom's birthday and he acknowledged. We did not hand him a cake and it's also very warm outside so we wouldn't have one with us at the table. We ordered tandoori chicken, some saag dishes, coconut curry, paratha etc. The food was good. With that said, our waters were never refilled. Not once. I have never been to an Indian restaurant where my water is not filled 500 times (I know this sounds crazy but I'm sure many that frequent Indian restaurants would understand this). The server didn't clear the plates and brought us our check. We weren't even finished eating. She said that they closed at 10. The check was brought at 10pm on the dot. My partner brought the check up to speak with the waiter that greeted us. The waiter had asked if we brought our own dessert and my partner said that we did not have any with us that we would like to order some. We were told that the kitchen closed at 9:45pm and everything was put away. My partner asked about the pre-made refrigerated desserts and the waiter said that they were put away and the kitchen was closed. Once more my partner said specifically if we could have a rasmalai or gulajamon and he shook his head no and reiterated that the kitchen was closed. I felt really upset by this because before we sat down we were not told what time the kitchen would close. Restaurants usually will give a heads up that the kitchen is closing and come over to ask if we would like anything else. I also automatically assumed that the restaurant knew we would want dessert. The staff didn't even try to clear our plates or dishes even after we paid. I had to ask for a water before leaving. Please note it's a heat wave and to not be given water is outrageous. When we were leaving four staff members were standing behind the counter. It did not appear to be understaffed. The food would have received four stars but because of this experience and the lack of service and empathy, the city has so much competition and I'd rather support a business that would at least try to go the extra mile for a birthday. read more

The service at Anar is really amazing! You can tell they really care about how their customers are treated. When I came me and my dining partner had the whole restaurant to ourselves, which was nice. I ordered the tandoori chicken, and was surprised how fast it came out. When I received my food, it looked and tasted like it had been cooked previously and then reheated in the microwave. This was disappointing, especially since the service was stellar. On the flip side, the samosas here are AWESOME! So good I forgot to take a picture. The sauces are also really tasty too! After living in Boston for the summer, I was absolutely delighted to finally indulge in some tasty Indian restaurant classics. The bhel puri was fantastic. The presentation was really cute, and we loved every bite. The lunch specials are such a good deal. Lots of food for ~$15. The daal and pickle were alright. The rice was very soft and fluffy. The naan (each lunch special includes lots of naan) was perfectly soft and flaky when they set it at our table. I ordered a chicken tikka masala, and it was perfect. Generally the food was just okay for me here. Ordered the chicken tikka masala, chicken tandoori, garlic naan, vegetable samosa and chicken samosa and some items felt like standard and others were on the drier side. Don't let the photos fool you, there's a good amount of chicken hiding in the tikka masala sauce. However, the chunks of chicken were unfortunately on the drier side. This was the same case for the chicken samosas, the ground chicken might've overcooked in the fryer. The chicken tandoori didn't have as much spices and flavor for me as I'd like it to have. Garlic naan was soft and pillowy and the vegetable samosas was solid. I was hoping the basmati rice had some more flavor as well, but they did give a good amount! The menu had a warning of *Very Spicy*, but it was only slightly above mild to me. Lamb was tender and the flavor of the curry was rich. I liked the lentil and vegetable sides, which paired nicely with the fresh naan. Allow me to retract my previous statement. This place sucks. Have ordered take out a few times since my initial order, and it appears that was a fluke. Chicken is poor quality, curries have little taste, and they somehow are able to screw up samosa chaat (literally just mashed up samosa with spices). Kept trying it to see if I could get the same experience as the first time (which was ok but worthwhile), and because the location is convenient, but this place never could manage 'ok' again. Just as important as the food issues, they openly prioritize people who order on their site (which doesn't work 1/2 the time) over anyone ordering with a regular delivery app like Seamless. Today, I waited 30 minutes past my pick up time. After practically begging the host to at least tell me if I should come back later, he told me "he couldn't guarantee anything". Last time I checked you took my money, so thus you owe me an explanation. Then again I was one of a sea of delivery people who were all confused how these guys stay in business. If you want to deal with this bullshit, real free. I'd rather go to Aangan around the corner, which isn't perfect, but where you'd NEVER get this type of poor service. Ok, so recently Amsterdam above 103 lost so many restaurants and cafe that it was hard not to get depressed. Anar (and Atlas Kitchen also nearby for Chinse) are the only good news in 12 years I lived there. Would you bring your Indian friends or relative there, or a date to impress? It depends. You would if you wanted to just enjoy the good life: being satisfied with regular North Indian fare with sufficient choice in spices, added flavor and a general impression that you are eating food cooked with decency and good ingredients as opposed to something heavy and oily. Call it what you like but we are blessed we have this option now. Can Anar stand the comparison with Indian restaurants on Lex@27-28th? No because those are more specialized and just have more volume/specialty. But unless you need south Indian, Gujarathi, or extra special ambiance almost all evenings the pleasure of eating from Anar beats the 50mn commute to curry hill so I'll take it. Note that getting stricly spiceless (as in "a western child can eat it") at this restaurant is a bit challenging. If that's required, go for Naan/Roti with Raita and Mango Lassi, everything else has some degree of flavor that register as "spice" to those. I don't consider that a flaw (Can you ask a French restaurant for sweetless desserts?) but it's something to know. read more
