Walked in on a Sunday evening for dinner - our first time in our neighborhood Indian place. We wanted to find out our go-to Indian restaurant and were hoping Baazi would hit the spot. Came here on a pulsd deal $59 for 3 courses with a bottle of wine. We combined two vouchers and every meal was magical. I had the lobster dish, my mom had the branzino, my husband had the chicken korma and my step father had the butter chicken. My mom usually brings her own chilies to dinner and the server noticed and joked that they also have chilies at the restaurant lol he even gave her some more to eat her meal with. So needless to say, the service was fantastic. As for Ambiance, the restaurant is beautiful, it's on the smaller side but I noticed that there was an upstairs. Dined here on a Wednesday evening with no reservation. Almost all tables downstairs were occupied. During the meal I noticed they have seating on a second level as well. Slightly limited menu for vegans, which is what my friend is, because dishes we were considering had cream in them. They kept it out of the cauliflower dish so sure could have it. We ordered several dishes thinking it might be too much but we ate everything and enjoyed them all! Luckily we had a 4-person table so there was room for everything! We started with the Channa Samosa and Baazi cauliflower. The cauliflower has a nice level of spice. The samosa is deconstructed but loved the preparation. I could just eat this! For my entree I had the dal makhani, which I knew I wanted ahead of time (luckily I read in another review that the price on their web site is incorrect and higher than it actually cost). My husband and I were longtime fans of their sister restaurant (Moti Mahal) which recently closed. We saw that Baazi was offering Moti Mahal's menu, plus their own. We came and the food was ABSOLUTELY delicious - maybe even better than Moti Mahal! Fatima, our waitress was lovely, provided great recommendations from the menu and was particularly friendly to our two toddler daughters. I've never had this delicacy and I was so pleasantly surprised to try it. I'd return just to have only this again. It's sliced cottage cheese with a raisin-infused soft cheese spread over it. Cannot recommend more. 2.) the goat lal Maas (red meat) was excellent. Rich flavor, chef's kiss to the delicate cilantro infusion that came out every other bite. Gaurav Anand was the chef who created the menu and catered our wedding in 2019 (which was amazing and our family + friends still talk about it years later). Baazi is good for what it is, but it does leave something desired from the restaurant it replaced, Awadh. Their quantities have shrunk quite a bit in addition to the quality of the dishes. Their paneer tikka masala has a few pieces of paneer swimming in oil. They overdo the oil and give too few pieces of paneer for the cost of the dish. The sauce itself is nice but could use a little more tang and sweet flavors. The barwhan baingan dish had a nice sauce, but the eggplant pieces itself were under-seasoned. The flavor of the sauce didn't permeate throughout the eggplant, leading me to believe that it was quickly added at the end separately. Overall, this restaurant used to be top tier in its former iteration, but now it's a shadow of its former self. I do hope staff improve the quality and quantity of the food and reduce the oil drastically to put this back up there with other good restaurants in this city. read more

My 3 friends and I came to Baazi for dinner on a Saturday night. We had a reservation at 6:30pm and did not have to wait to get a table. This restaurant is very cute on the inside and has two stories so there is extra seating upstairs. Service was a little on the slower side and it took a while to get our order in. For drinks, I ordered a Mr. Collins which was a refreshing cucumber/mint drink that tasted similar to a mojito with a hint of cucumber. My two other friends got the Indian Summer, which had a subtle mango flavor, and Mezcal Passion, that had a more complex flavor profile with tamarind, lime, and passion fruit, which they both really enjoyed. For food we shared : Baazi Gobi: very good appetizer, especially for sharing. Fried cauliflower in this very flavorful sauce that has a similar consistency of orange chicken sauce but less sweet and spicier. Amazing balance of spices in the sauce that went very well with the cauliflower and made this a very addicting dish. Shakarkandi Chaat : four individually presented "skewers" with small potato balls that were covered in tamarind and chilli lime powder. Prominent tamarind flavor. Very good. Paneer Ke Sholey: they light this dish on fire at your table and it is beautiful. The paneer itself was flavorful and grilled to perfection. Tasted very high quality and fresh. Baghaar-e-Baingan: small eggplant pieces in a delicious coconut and peanut sauce. Not too spicy. Had nice contrast of the meaty eggplant, creamy curry sauce, with a crunch from the peanuts. Butternut Squash Kofta: probably my favorite dish of the night. The first time I have seen this unique take on traditional kofta. The kofta itself was delicious and the butternut squash gave it a perfect, soft texture on the inside. There was also a very slight hint of sweetness from the squash which I really enjoyed. The curry it came in was also mildly sweet and very creamy with a subtle taste of sweet corn that balanced out the other spices. The only complaint I have is that it only came with 3 koftas and it was hard to split between 4 people (also pricing wise a bit steep for just 3). Would be nice to see an extra one in there eventually. Grilled Sea Bass: this dish had the perfect melt-in-your-mouth, buttery consistency of sea bass. Amazing flavor from the mustard/coconut marinade. Also came with perfectly grilled veggies which were full of flavor and a very good lemon rice. Chicken Sirka Pyaz: Very tender, well cooked chicken. The curry was thick and delicious with a rich tomato base. Loved this dish too. Garlic and Regular Naan: only tried the regular naan and it was delicious. Each order comes with four pieces so we got two (one of each to split). All the food we ordered was truly amazing-- well cooked, full of flavor, and prepared in a way that truly felt like a unique, modern spin on traditional Indian food. The ambiance was nice and relaxed. Definitely on the pricier end but the food quality is very superior and the dishes are elaborate. Service was okay and did not particularly stand out to me. The blue is bright, but not overwhelming and it works with the yellow flowers. There is also outdoor seating in a covered, flowery patio and the restaurant itself is spacious. A friend and I had the kasoori methi chicken tikka, the methi malai and the butternut squash kofta to share. Both the chicken tikka and the methi malai were tender and seasoned, but the butternut squash kofta fell very short. It tried to be a creative take on a classic, but ultimately fell short due to a very, very sweet gravy with just three small koftas. The koftas themselves were tasty, but I wish we just had more of them for a dish that costs $24. The naan and the basmati rice served with the entrees were pretty standard. Overall, Baazi is stylish, but lacking in terms of substance. The experience left more to be desired in terms of the strong flavors that are quintessential to Indian cuisine as well as the small portion sizes. Baazi is exactly what NYC's Indian food scene needed. Every other restaurant at its price point will try to serve you the same dishes: tikka masala, vindaloo and biryani. Baazi actively avoids these stereotypes and brings you dishes sourced from pan-Indian local cuisines. As someone born and raised in India, I am especially heartened by this endeavor. Chef Gaurav Anand and his team succeeded with flying colors in this ambition. My girlfriend and I opted for prime seating on a Saturday night. This was not our first time here. The street level of the restaurant was full but not claustrophobic. The servers and hosts were polite, courteous, and attentive. We ordered the spicy ginger margarita - nothing to write home about but a special shoutout is deserved for using an Indian twist on rim salt, with red chili powder! Appetizers: The Shrimp Balchao was a spicy coastal treat. The prawns were juicy and fresh, and the balchao paste was bursting with flavor. Typically Shrimp Balchao is prepared in a thicker paste but they did a great job adapting this to a drier appetizer. The other appetizer we ordered, Tunday Ke Kebab, is the reason I am a repeat customer of Baazi. This tender lamb patty, bursting with flavors of ginger, garlic and black pepper, took me home. It aimed to replicate a famous kebab from Lucknow, India, and was 70% of the way there. For those who have tried the original Tunday Kebab, this one has a crispier top and doesn't melt in your mouth as easily. Regardless, it is an incredible kebab. Entrees: We ordered Prawn Kuzhambu and Chicken Sirka Pyaaz. Both curries are atypical to NYC's Indian food scene, so don't expect tikka masala/vindaloo. The prawns were served in a chettinad gravy, flavored with mustard, sesame and curry leaves. This was an absolute treat. The chicken was served with full juicy boneless thigh pieces in an incredible curry. Green chilli and a delicious curry paste set it apart from the usual chicken curries. I would highly recommend Baazi to fans of Indian food. They will mesmerize you with atypical dishes. If you are a native, you will not be disappointed. Hearing that the owner and chef at Baazi were the same as the prior incarnation (Awadh) surprised me because the menu is completely different-- but the food retained the high quality I expected. Perhaps because our visit was on Cinco de Mayo and also a Monday might have explained the sparse crowd but we very much enjoyed eating in a quiet room where we could enjoy conversation. Our server, a woman, was very patient and let us take our time; she was also pleasant. Their version of a margarita with ginger and sugar cane stirrer was one of the liveliest cocktails I ever had and is highly recommended. The lamb chop starter offered 3 delicious chops coated with spices and some cilantro chutney for dipping. The goat main course was delicious and the naan was great for dipping. The portion size was generous. I did not taste my date's butter chicken; he said it was fine but it appeared to me that the portion was not especially generous.
