We stopped here because we didn't want to wait in the long line at Matsumoto's and it's conveniently right across the street. Overall, we actually liked it. The shave ice itself was refreshing and hit the spot, especially on a warm North Shore day. The only thing that wasn't our favorite was the mochi balls. They tasted a bit like they were store-bought and slightly artificial compared to the rest of the shave ice. Amazingly fast service! I like their price better than the other place (you know what I'm talking about) but the main thing we chose this one over the other is the shave ice holder and tables. Came on a Friday and I was expecting that finely shaved soft snow texture shaved ice action but, unfortunately that was not what I got. Shaved ice was more crushed ice texture. More crunch and not that melt in your mouth texture I was expecting. Even the syrup flavors were not what I was expecting, it had that artificial sugar taste to it. I was not a fan at all! My sister in law who enjoys this location even said it was an off day for them when we went. So I'm chopping it up to a hit and miss type venue. Great local flavors and we especially like the clear cups to hold the massive portions of shave ice. The ice itself is soft and snowy, and every flavor we've tried is delicious. Hubby and I were in the North Shore downtown area and wanted to try something different than the ever famous Matsumotos, and Aoki's was recommended on Amanda & Felix's YouTube channel. We got the North Shore shave ice (mango, lilikoi, guava with li hing mui) and added mochi. The flavors went well together and weren't overly sweet. It's been 29.5 years since I've last had a shave ice from Aoki, and I still have their t shirt from back then as well. They've moved locations since I was last here. I made the long drive from Waikiki today to see the north shore and indulge in an Aoki shave ice. I went back to my roots and had the Volcano with ice cream. My wife had the Northshore. Aoki is located on Kamehameha Hwy in a little red building tucked behind the north shore trading company. The Aoki shave ice was as delicious as I remember it. Nice shave to the ice and delicious flavored syrups. The outdoor seating was a nice touch from the old building. The staff was friendly and the shave ice was made quick. Aoki has been around for a long time obviously, as I stated I indulged in Aoki shave ice back in the 90's. Aoki is worth the drive and worth a stop for a delicious treat. read more

Better than Matsumotos lol. The wait was better, the ice was smooth and soft and the flavors were great! Definitely refreshing on a hot day and although it looked like maybe they could use another worker for faster service, they still got through the line quickly and everyone enjoyed their shave ice on the deck. Took us a minute to find as it moved across the street, it has been over 12 years since we moved back to the Mainland. It was our favorite then and remains our #1 Shave Ice spot. We'd driven up from Waikiki to try it as an alternative to the touristy Matsumoto's only to be pretty disappointed. To this day I do NOT understand why people would wait in a(n unjustifiably long) line across the street when this little gem serves up shave ice that's every bit as good. Staff here are also more laid back and easygoing. Shave is ultra fine. Syrups are homemade and mouthwatering. The pours are generous. Holy smokes does this place blow the rest of the shaved ice places we tried out of the water! My husband asked some locals where the best shaved ice was and we were told Aoki's so we headed straight over. There was a bit of a line but it was all worthwhile. Service was great- very patient and gave great recommendations. No indoor seating, but they do have some tables outside. You know what? I'm so grateful for this quiet, and assuming location right across the other shave ice place. They can hold their own for sure. And people should opt for Aoki's. They have a little sitting area for families and groups of friends. Their prices are awesome - $4 for smalls. We had four small shave ice which were pretty substantial in our opinion. Cannot go wrong with strawberry and ice cream. Little extra cost ($1.50) for the extras like ice cream and azuki beans. Ice cream addition was a $1. They served us fast. The ice was fine. The flavor of the syrup was just right, not too much, not too skimpy. Even the skeptic in our family enjoyed theirs before lunch snack. A good way to end summer break and to start the week. Out of the two shaved ice shops in the area, Aoki's is our preferred! Shorter lines, homemade syrups, and ice cakes! Our local colleagues also much prefer Aoki's. All the flavors are great and toppings are good as well. I am partial to anything with li hing mui so that's what I gravitate towards! There is a small seating area with snow cone stands as well to make for easier eating, especially for kids. We also really like the ice cakes they sell at the retail store at the front. Giving it 5 stars as it satisfied me on a really hot day. I went here with my cousin on a late Saturday afternoon, we just parked in the neighbourhood, not sure if they have actual parking space. I love how there's a seating area where you can enjoy your shave ice. I also love the fact that there's set flavours. Because knowing me, I'd just choose random flavours and they won't go well together. I personally chose Surf Special because it sounded good to me and it was! Matsumoto's was closed so we came to Aoki's. What a wonderful surprise! The flavors are great, and the texture of the ice very soft as well. It honestly felt more local to me than any other place I'd been to in Haleiwa.
