Everything I've had here is delicious, generously portioned, and an excellent value. The service is efficient and friendly; the restaurant is pleasant to dine in with friends and never too loud or busy to enjoy an extended meal. The large free parking lot makes this place effortless to visit. A gem that deserves far more customers than I normally see when I've dined here. Great lunch specials too. We went here for Mother's Day with my daughter, son in law, 3yo granddaughter and 6 mo grandson. Free parking available behind the restaurant. We had reservations but it was not crowded as we arrived at 5pm due to the small children with us. They were very welcoming and patient with the kids. Food was great! Had the mixed veg appetizer which was enough for all of us to share- samosas especially were really good. Malai kofta was wonderful, butter chicken very good and a paneer dish was good as well. Solid Indian restaurant in the Irving park area. The food does take a while to come out though, so if you're on a time crunch, I would not eat here. We started lunch at 12:30 pm and finished around 3 pm. The curries were flavorful and delicious, but the biryani was a bit disappointing. There was no flavor or spice to the rice. I would skip on that. The goat curry, butter chicken, bread bowl, chicken tikka masala and okra curry were all solid. For 6 dishes, it was about $140 with tax and tip. Restaurant has plenty of seating options, from booths to tables and they also have high chairs for kids. We went on a Sunday for lunch and there was only one other party there. One piece of feedback for the restaurant would be use different takeout containers. The ones provided did not prevent the curry from spilling out when there's movement. They were fine for rice dishes, but not for anything with liquid. I recommend coming here for lunch or dinner if you're craving Indian! read more

There are still trappings of the previous restaurants that were here, Manny's was Mexican and a Thai place before that. They seem to be using Manny's cocktail glasses in fact. This restaurant serves both the usual Westernized IndoPak dishes but also some harder to find (impossible to find in Wisconsin) South Indian choices. I really enjoy the cuisine of the Chettinad region and they have a few entrees from there on the menu. I asked our waiter where the chef was from and he knew what I was getting at he said "he's from Northern India but he's been doing this for 35 years he know what he's doing!" And indeed he does, the Chettinad dishes are authentic and superb. Asking for medium hot is not quite hot enough so I ask for a bit hotter than medium and that's my happy place. I ordered goat biryani and I might as well have ordered "bone" biryani because it was full of bones and there was barely any meat on the bones. The dinner came right away, but it was cool and not hot and I asked for spicy. Their version of spicy is to throw a spicy sauce on top, which didn't cook in with the original meal. I've had good biryani before, but this was not good and I will not come back for biryani. That said, I ordered. raita also, because I didn't think it came with that only to find out it did. Apna Indian Grill recently opened in a location with two entrances, along Elston as well as Montrose. I've wanted to give it a try, as Indian food is not a prominent find in this immediate area. I walked in to place my takeout order, and the pleasant young lady patiently answered my questions about my potential order. I went with lamb shahi korma, a dish that to my knowledge I have never ever tried before. She said that I could order my dish as "mild" so that is what I did. My order came out in only a few minutes. Fortunately I arrived before a party of 16 or so was about to dine in, possibly saving me a significant wait for my food. Lamb shahi korma comes with chunks of lamb, and a smattering of cashews and raisins in a creamy onion sauce, along with a side of rice. I did enjoy the flavor of the dish, and the food had just a bit of zing to it, although for $17.95 I was hoping for a bit more quantity of food. read more

Ok. Elston is an odd diagonal street with many personalities. If you find yourself at the Irving Park Road intersection and are hungry, try out Apna. This little jewel is in an offbeat space with vintage chandeliers, a bubble tank and vinyl booths. Don't let that get in the way of a solid veg/non veg menu. We shared samosas with chickpea topping, a lamb byriani and a TAJ beer. The portions were enough for two people and tasted great. The service was a little slow but friendly. The masala dosa here was good. The two stars are for that dish only. The service was extremely slow. We were a table of 6 people and ordered 5 items off the menu and got there for breakfast. There was only one other table of 2 people who were also waiting for their food. Our food came out extremely late. They forgot our drinks ( chai) which we ordered with our food. After we were done when we asked for our drinks our server said he'll bring it and then disappeared. We never saw him again. We finally asked someone else to help us after waiting a long time and told them we just want to pay and will leave. In the mean time while we waited, another table got occupied and their food was out faster than ours but still no sign of our drinks or no apology or acknowledgement for the delay for our food or forgetting our drinks. It's not like the servers were rude but they were just indifferent and ignoring the fact that there was a huge delay with our order and didn't try to fix it. Again the masala dosa was good, as was the tomato chutney that came with the dosa but the sambhar was not authentic ( it had corn and peas) and the idli and vada were also not authentic. Vada was not crispy and was dry. We also ordered poori sabzi, and it was a complete miss. The pooris were thick and chewy and the sabzi only tasted of turmeric. The bathroom was very dirty and hadn't been cleaned and they were out of toilet paper. read more

Great service. There's lots of seating in the back (or front if you come in via Montrose). They were getting lots of takeout orders while we were here so they must be doing something right! We had the veggie samosas to start, then the butter chicken and shrimp vindaloo, everything was super tasty! We had medium spice and I would say it was perfect, not too hot. The breads were so delish I forgot to take a picture, but we had garlic naan and paneer kulcha. As soon as I walked into this place, I was hit with the wall of spice smells in the best possible way. This place is a proper curry house like the ones that I used to go to when I lived in Australia. They know how to make a really really good curry. Just be aware only order what you can handle just because you think that you can handle Buffalo wild wings, habanero mango wings doesn't mean that you can handle spicy chicken vindaloo! I'm a bit surprised at the high ratings for Apna Indian Grill. To me, the food quality is on par with what you may find at a typical Indian restaurant on Devon, which aren't that great. Solid authentic flavors and spices appear to have diminished more and more over the last 12+ years. Better authentic flavors appear to be in the Chicago suburbs. We ordered a variety of dishes for take-out: Dal Tadka, Channa Masala, Baingan Bharta, Butter Chicken, Kadai Paneer, and samosas. The samosas were a perfect size for one person, but the potato masala wasn't flavored enough to stand on its own unless you added chutney to them. The channa masala and butter chicken were enjoyed by us. The dal tadka missed the mark with little or no seasoning or lime juice. I'm often surprised by restaurants overlooking acid in their food. The baingan bharta was quite smoky, which isn't how I was brought up, but perhaps others enjoy it. Last, the kadai paneer was flavorful, but had a far darker (intense) curry color than I have ever experienced here or in India. Requests for the restaurant: (1) Please consider flavoring the food more thoroughly, including acid, so they stand on their own. Do not expect a chutney or achaar to carry it. (2) Please indicate how many pieces of your appetizers are included per order. Neither the menu nor Cuboh indicate how many samosas are included for $6 per order. (3) Indicate that rice is apparently included with some dishes. We were not expecting so much rice, since your menu also has rice as a side order. (4) Indicate that Cuboh charges a 5% service fee for using their tool. It is unfair to customers to only become aware of that after an order has been submitted. read more

Food: Ordered takeout. Main dishes are like soup with an abundance off sauce compared to the meat. Although this has sadly become a theme of many Indian restaurants near and far, I expected more. Not so much as the volume of food but that a curry is not supposed to be a soup. In terms of taste, the meats were cooked fine and not overcooked as a positive; however felt sauce was bland Service: staff seemed nice enough but the order was about 25 minutes behind schedule and there were no offers of accommodation (such as giving me a seat to wait at, a water to sip on, etc...) which has been offered at other establishments and usually makes you feel more appreciated as a paying customer. Overall, I eat Indian food frequently and wouldn't say anything went atrocious but that the experience was forgetful and I wouldn't go out of my way to go again read more

There isn't much Indian food in my area on the NW side, and Apna is easily the best place for miles in my opinion. We got the butter chicken, samosa chaat, and three different kinds of naan. The samosa chaat was so flavorful and vibrant. I could taste the many spices in it, the citrusy notes, and the heat. A really delicious, balanced dish. The butter chicken my partner got was a very good version too. More tomato-forward than cream-forward, which was a reminder of how very fresh everything tasted. I'd say the portions were generous too. We ordered for delivery, but I really want to go for lunch amd try the thalis. FINALLY there is great Indian food near my home!! read more

This is the closest Indian place to my house at 2 miles away and it does not disappoint! The spices are terrific. My friend and I got goat kadai, lamb curry and garlic naan and split everything. The server was really nice. They were out of sweet lassi but he made one special for me. I like the way it's set up with booths on the sides and tables in the middle. My friends and I will definitely be coming here regularly. There is only street parking, so carpool if you're coming with a crowd, or bike if you are able. We have dined at this restaurant many times and have found the food and service to be very good. However, their prices have gone up. Last night my wife and I had a few entries, a beer and a glass of wine. The bill was a hundred dollars. This is too much to charge and so we will explore some other options for eateries in our neighborhood. We may be back, but it will certainly not be for a while. read more

We tried this place last night due to the good reviews and we were not disappointed! We ordered the butter chicken, veg biryani, the Tandoori Chicken and garlic naan, and then we took a risk on the Chicken/veg Hakka. We were extremely happy with all of our choices. The butter chicken was perfectly spiced (we asked for medium) and the Hakka was a pleasant surprise. The tandoori chicken was really great, moist and flavorful without being rubbery like it can sometimes be and it came with perfectly done veggies that were spiced up and slightly crispy. Yummy! I am not sure who the owners are but there was a very adorable and sweet couple working there and they were very attentive and accommodating. We are from Lincoln Square/North Center neighborhood and our normal go-to place for Indian food (I won't name it) started putting way too much sugar in all of their dishes (gross) so we were forced to find a new place!
