I couldn't wait to write this review! I've been to Appaloosa before, but I've never really relished in the experience. After leaving a concert downtown, hoping to wait out traffic and the ride-share pick up craze- my husband and I wanted to get a quick bite and a drink. There were not many places open past 11pm on a Sunday, let alone serving food. I also came to the unfortunate realization that many of the late night places I use to frequent downtown have closed permanently since quarantine. While walking, I spotted Appaloosa from the corner of my eye. Lo & behold, not only were they open, but the menu was posted on the door with their late night hours going until 1 am. Though I had been before, I was not sure what the hours were, or if the kitchen was open late. We walked in and were greeted by live music and a friendly host. No cover charge, just a quick peak at the I.D. We sat at the bar while the band played jazz that added to the ambiance. Our bartenders were attentive and gave great conversation. We were immediately given menus and asked what we would like to drink. Katelyn took our food order promptly, and she was also funny and charismatic. We ordered the birria tacos, and they were absolutely amazing. The consommé was flavorful and bright, and the birria itself was tender and juicy. The food was so fantastic we forgot about our drinks! Appaloosa was the perfect way to wrap up the weekend, and we will be coming back very soon! read more

Had a great burger here! Well cooked and tasty! Was with a big party so hard to hear each other because of the Friday night band. I also did not like how far away the restroom was considering not just the distance, but also the stairs from the main dining room. But the service was good, and every one was very friendly. So the wife and I wanted a snack and drinks. So we stopped by and gave this place a try. The bartender was really nice the place has a cool vibe. The building is really cool. We get wings and sweet potatoes fries. The food was really good and came out really fast. They have a really good beer list. We were out late that night and there were still open so we stoped in again for dinner. Also had live music. I got a buffalo burger with cheddar cheese and it was really good. We decided to try Appaloosa Grill, as it was within walking distance of our hotel. The staff were very nice and welcoming as they seated us took our drink orders. Taylor did a great job of answering our menu questions and taking our specific food requests. She did a great job of being there without being there too much. The food was delicious! My wife had a cheeseburger and fries. She ordered it medium with provolone. It came out perfect. I had a Buffalo burger cooked medium with smoked Gouda and fries. It was cooked perfect as well. The fries were hot and fresh, and salted perfectly. I tried the Pilsner Urquell Czech Lager. It was an easy, refreshing drinker, as pilsners are, that went well with the burger. Appaloosa Grill was a laid back, nice place to hang out after our flight to grab a bite and drink. We would love to come back someday when we visit Denver again. read more

Overall it was average. The food was good but nothing exceptional, I did really enjoy the side salad. They had some good options for drinks but mine was too sweet. The service was also average (not the most expedient). The bathroom was frustrating. I was told to use one in the main building. It was all the way downstairs and then all the stalls were locked!? Then when I came back up there was a bathroom upstairs after all that they let me use. So that was odd. Overall, I'd say it's an average experience typical for restaurants on 16th St. mall in Denver. However it was very convenient to the Paramount theater where we were going to a show after. read more

The burger was unfortunately much drier than I thought and could have used for seasoning. The broccoli was good but too salty. I also wasn't given any utensils or napkins for the order. If there is one place in Denver I would recommend to anyone visiting it is Appaloosa. My husband and I both agreed that this was the best meal we had over the course of our 5 day visit. We stumbled in during happy hour, so I indulged in a couple of drinks. I don't remember all the specials but rail drinks were $6. I also ordered the bison chili fries from their happy hour menu and HOLY *UCK they are INCREDIBLE! They are a must try. I also had the lobster roll which comes packed with lobster and is served with delicious butter on the side. It does not come with a side like fries or a salad, so you may need to order a couple of items to get full. Don't hesitate to dine here. The staff are friendly and accommodating and the food is 1000/10. read more

Honestly, had a pathetic meal here. I had a bowl of supposedly bison chili that had no meat in it whatsoever. It was essentially a bowl of slightly spicy tomato sauce. I asked for some bread which they charged extra for, then served me some dinner rolls that were soggy, wet, and ice cold inside. Then I had a mixed green beet and goat cheese salad that had obviously been dressed hours before and was a soggy disgusting wilting mess. The waitress ignored me all evening and never never refilled my water glass so I had to ask the host... Then essentially badgered me to tip extra over and above the 20% service fee they already charge. Quite frankly, this place was one of the lamest meals I've had in a while. read more

Dani and John were exceptionally helpful with all the planning leading up to the event, and the event itself was nicely coordinated. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere of the Wright Room, including the A&V setup was exactly what we were looking for. The bartenders were super friendly, yet not overly. It was loud with live music but not too crowded. It was late, I had just worked a 12 hour shift and I needed something. The baked goat cheese was highly recommended and for good reason. It was delicious. I wasn't crazy about the crostini, it wasnt bread like i expected. Visiting F&F in CO, so wanted to eat different things. Decided to try b/c of bison and things on the menu. Hubs got the Bison Pastrami Reuben - he said good as far as reubens go, but couldn't tell the bison part of it. Baby got wings these were really good. I pulled off the good parts which were a little dry (the way I like it), and let her gnaw on the rest of it. She ate like 4 of them, on top of some of the veggie sticks. I got the Bison Pappardelle - pasta cooked well, and pretty tasty, but not enough meat. Mostly tomatoes. Ricotta on top was delish. But otherwise a little disappointing. Also got the Bison Bone Marrow - YUM. Could have used a sprinkle of Hawaiian Salt on top (how we eat it), but that's just a personal preference. Use to cow, so this bison bone was HUGE. Choke marrow YUM. Baby was grinding the bread so waitress offered to bring more...but I was full so didn't need it. Had a local beer that was delish. Was offered another that tasted like perfume. The waitress took it back though, so that was good. Overall pretty fun - kinda dark and noisy, but it was a Friday night and maybe we are just too old to be there. Restrooms are downstairs which is a little bit of a hike especially when Baby wants to tag along. Don't like the autograt for House... restaurant should just pay them more. Grat should be for the servers/bussers...and not for us to add on an additional % just to make everyone feel special. Not a fan. read more

DO NOT EAT HERE, unless you like paying the operating cost of the restaurant for the owners. This restaurant operates on communist/socialist principles, charging a 20% service fee calculated from the after-tax amount, to pass on their operating costs to the customer. This charge is hidden and they do not tell you up front when you sit down or before you order. I enjoy a good Bison steak which is why I chose to come here. I looked at the menu online before coming so I already knew what I was going to order without looking at the menu in the restaurant. No where on their web page does it say in bold, on the main page or anywhere you would easily find it, that they charge 20% on the total bill including the tax. I am fine with tipping FOR GOOD SERVICE, AFTER. I have a problem with mandatory hidden fees to pass standard business operating costs of the owner onto the customer. I also do not pay 20% across the board on alcohol. If I order a $30 bottle of wine or a $300 bottle, the server performs the same action to uncork and pour. I do not pay/tip 20% on alcohol just because the bottle cost more. If the owner wants to pass the costs on to the customer, then RAISE THE MENU PRICES and let people decide if they want to pay versus deceiving them with lower listed prices when in fact, the prices are actually 20% higher than what's listed on the menu. DO NOT include hidden service fees that are only brought to light after eating when the bill comes. DINE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I however will never eat here again and will patronize establishments that are open and honest with their customers from the start and do not demand a service fee before any service has actually been conducted and then have the gall to ask for additional tips on top. read more

The 20% charge is a choice the company makes that takes away from the servers/bartenders who work hard for their tips. Sorry, but I'm not paying 40% on a meal because the restaurant doesn't want to pay servers fairly. As a small business owner who doesn't get to pass the buck to the customer, I can't understand why these companies get to take advantage of customers and think there are no consequences. My wife and I got there about 3pm in time for happy hour. We ordered a couple of sandwiches, turkey and a bison reuben. They were very good. Great local bakery bread and the marble rye for the reuben was spot on. Service was slow and sloppy. We had told her that we would be interested in ordering happy hour drinks and appetizers, but she never came back until we had finished our lunch. She let the bill and after 15 minutes I had to find the manager take the bill. FYI - everyone is charged a 20% service fee so I can see why service is poor. read more

I went to Denver for a conference and had the opportunity to explore their Downtown restuarants. The hotel front desk recommended this place. It was very popular, as I'm sure other hotel's recommended it to their guests too. While there was a long wait, other places had similar situations. The location was very convenient to downtown, yet that came with some size restrictions. They did a good job to arrange seating around their centralized bar area. The wait staff was nice, yet very busy. The bartender was doubling as our waiter even though we were against the back wall. I asked for his recommendation as I didn't want anything too heavy. He suggested the Chile Goat Salad with blackened salmon. It was a decent portion; yet it could have been a little bigger. The salmon was cooked well and a good size. It was a nice meal. read more

Review of Appaloosa Grill - Denver While visiting Denver, I reviewed several menus near our downtown hotel and decided to give Appaloosa Grill a try. The menu looked great with plenty of variety, and several appetizers sounded wonderful. I was also looking forward to trying one of their bison dishes. Our server, Jack, started off strong--he was attentive and friendly. I decided to start with the Buffalo Bites, described as breaded cauliflower and broccoli served with buffalo sauce. Jack recommended a side of ranch, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill when the appetizer arrived. Another server dropped it off without any plates, and then I noticed the portion size. For $15 (before the automatic 20% Team Service Charge, making it $18 total), the appetizer consisted of only 4 small pieces of cauliflower and 4 small pieces of broccoli. That's it. I was shocked by how skimpy the portion was, especially considering how inexpensive the ingredients are. I brought it to Jack's attention, and even he agreed it was a poor portion size. He kindly offered to see if he could bring a few more pieces, but I didn't feel comfortable after already having to raise the issue. At that point, I lost confidence in ordering a $52 bison filet--if the restaurant was this cheap with cauliflower and broccoli, what could I expect from a high-ticket entrée? Overall, I left disappointed. While the service from Jack was good, the portion size and pricing felt unreasonable, and it left me skeptical about the rest of the menu. read more

The food is pretty dang good and bartenders/servers are always awesome, And for once they actually TELL customers about added gratuity! So many spots are so sneaky about it & try to capitalize on greed. Appaloosa does NOT! Good on you all! Their Caesar salad dressing g is excellent! Yes, it comes with a bit of anchovy and it's perfect. This dressing has anchovies as a main ingredient, it surprises me how many people aren't aware of that fact. Another fun fact - Caesar salad was not created where you might think. It was invented in Tijuana, Mexico. But, the chef was Italian so there ya go. They have a nice carpaccio dish too. This jumped out as a good spot to visit for a quick bite to split and a beer. Ended up being a very solid choice. They are currently being affected by the nearby construction but are very much open. Due to timing of us showing up it wasn't fully dead but was not busy. We snagged some bar seats as my wife works in the liquor business and appreciates seeing what places have for offerings. The bartender was friendly and service was quick. They had a good variety of brews available and a full bar as well. I had a great imperial stout and my wife had a key lime sour, both happy with our choices. Food wise we chose to split an order of lemon pepper wings as well as a cup of their bison chili. Wings were seasoned well and crispy while the bison chili was tasty and nice to grab due to never seeing bison on menus back home. The chili was tasty but for my wife it did have a kick of spice, she managed to eat some and enjoyed what she had. I would say overall it was a good dining experience, not the best of our trip. Price was quite a bit but I would say basically expected. Yet I would say for a full experience we would need to return. A bison filet is tempting and they do advertise live music nightly so grab a bite, a beer and listen to some music. Give this place a try for yourself, they likely need some extra patrons with the ongoing construction nearby. read more

Ate here many years ago and remembered it being good, so I stopped by on a recent trip to downtown Denver. I sat at the bar. The bartender was great and made some good recommendations. They had a great tap list, I just wish they offered flights, or small pours. They did let me sample a couple to decide what I wanted to go with, but I'd prefer the ability to try a variety of the many options they had instead of a pint of something. I ordered the wings. I went with the the green chili rub and it was really good. I was looking for more of a kick so I asked for a side of the house made buffalo sauce. The two together were spicy but not over the top and is definitely the way to go! I also had the Chili Goat salad which was really good. It would be fantastic with Salmon, but because of the wings I didn't add it this time. I'll be sure to get that next time. read more

We had just a great dining experience here. The food was great. The service was great. The live music was cool. We went there late after getting to our hotel after the 80 mile drive from Denver airport to downtown, as it was a couple blocks from our hotel, and couldn't have been happier with everything. This might not have stuck out as a flashy or unique place we had to visit, with no previous knowledge. But knowing more now I would definitely make a point to eat there! Read up on them on their website. Sounds like good ownership, good background. We wanted to go back and eat there again while in Denver but sadly didn't get to. I had dinner here with a friend while in town for a conference and it was pretty busy on a Thursday night, but we were able to get a table without a reservation around 6PM. The beer list was good and I enjoyed the Summer Lager; it was perfect for a hot summer day. For my entree I had the Green Chili Bison Burger with sweet potato fries. The burger was flavorful and nicely cooked medium as ordered. Service was good; our server explained the 20% service charge is split among everyone, including kitchen staff, etc. so if we wanted to specifically tip her we needed to add a tip on top of that. This seems a little strange; I sure hope they are paying servers more than the usual rate for servers if they truly are getting far less in tips. Otherwise, it seems to be pressing customers to basically tip 30-40% with the 20% included and then another 10-20% on top.
