Many years ago, I'd visited this theater when it was Fresh Pond cinema and I had vowed not to return, because the place had just been gross. This afternoon, my husband and I decided to see a movie and avoid heading downtown due to the marathon. The movie we decided to see was about needing to be silent in a post-apocalyptic world. (I won't say which one but I'm sure most people could guess). The theater itself felt very post-apocalyptic. It was an absolute mess. Construction was happening to the left of the entrance inside the lobby, and there were no staff attending the ticket counter. Parents there had what seemed like 5-8 children each, and all of them were running, screeching, and/or crying. If they had been characters in the film I mentioned above, they'd all be toast. We went upstairs, and at the top of the stairs a large amount of liquid had been spilled on the floor, and two napkins had been thrown on top of it and there was a huge wet area still there. There was a concession stand that looked like it was abandoned a few years ago. It was covered in dust and looked pretty sad. The women's bathroom on the 2nd floor was closed "for repairs." The bathroom on the 1st floor had one stall that was clogged and the next stall had no toilet paper, the 3rd stall door wouldn't stay closed. All of the stall doors were gross. They are white and really need to be scrubbed down. There were two hand dryers and one was broken. I will say the movie theater seats were decent and our tickets were a fair price- they offer a deal for one ticket, popcorn and a soda for $13. But in all honesty, you could probably just go for free because there was literally no one staffing anything there other than the first floor concession counter, so no one checked any tickets for entry. I wouldn't return to this theater because it was all over the place- dirty, loud, chaotic. But at least there is parking..... read more

Apple Cinemas is....a wild ride. When you come in, it's kind of like you stumbled into an abandoned building, along with other customers searching for a movie to watch. There are no manned ticket counters, just self-service check ins, so the only employee there seemed to be the guy manning the concession stand. Loooots of popcorn on the floor, a couple of arcade machines (one of them broken down, with an error message on the screen that had been there for god knows how long), etc, and the bathrooms were otherworldly gross. Multiple stalls out of order, 2/3 sinks out of commission, and nasty stalls. I noped out of there pretty fast and tried the upstairs bathroom instead, but was met with a similar situation. However, the theaters themselves are actually not terrible. They have large reclining seats that seem newish and are fairly comfortable, and I didn't notice anything overly messy. There also is a lot of available parking, and a trader joes across the street if you're trying to sneak in a snack. So, my advice would be go for the movie (super cheap on Tuesdays), and try to spend as little time in the rest of the building as possible. read more

This is my first visit here in years, since it was Fresh Pond. My friend bought the tickets online so I cannot comment on the process or the price. The lobby is set up a bit odd and it was apparent, that they don't have that much staff. We wait in line not sure if it was check in, as the worker with assisting two/2 customers with concession purposes but there also seemed to concessions in other parts of the lobby. So maybe you pay for empty box of popcorn and then fill it/like do it yourself? Please note, did not want to make us late, so I did not ask and we did not get popcorn, soda or snacks so I have no idea how expensive they are. Finally he told my friend that yes he could scan her phone, he printed out the tickets and her receipt and responded to her question that it was theater Three/3 upstairs. He seemed nice enough but in that way that he was doing three/3 things at once, etc. So I would say they were short staffed but maybe because it was expected to be a quiet weekend. The concession stand on the upper level looks like it is not longer operable or it was not yesterday, my friend went on the opening night for Barbie and they were mobbed so maybe it was open then/they have it open for large crowds. The theater itself was not crowded it was nice out so only a few folks in the center seats, etc. The floor was clean and we were able to press the seats and lift our legs up, I'm not sure they would recline back, I did not try that. The theater has been recently renovated. New recliner seats, high quality projectors, double cup holders, and they clean each theater between movies with multiple people. Very appreciative of the cleanliness of the theater. Doing the Alewife/Arlington community Justice. My only complaint would have to be the uncovered trash cans near the concession areas and lack of assigned seating when purchasing online. FYI they also have 4.75 dollar movie Tuesdays and college Wednesdays. Overall a much improved theater than old reviews state. Now a strong 4 star overall but a 5 in my book. read more

Dirty! Dirty! Dirty! Trash is everywhere and overflowing from bins. I'm not sure why it's not being changed regularly because trash attracts flies and it's the summer time. There were also paper towels on the floor, spilled drinks on the countertops and sticky seats in the theatre. I also observed multiple large rats running outside of the theatre in broad daylight by the trash cans which just goes to show the uncleanliness of the area. I went to the first showing on Sundays around 11:00. There are usually plenty of seats and I normally don't have a problem. One time I went later in the day. Since the theater has assigned seating which usually, I ended up in the front row because that is all that was left. I thought this was going to be a problem only to discover that it was not bad viewing. Next time for the later shows, I will purchase my seats on the internet rather than taking my chances with the automatic ticket counter. read more

Lots of unfair reviews on here. This place is simple and a great deal. The tickets are cheaper and the seats are just as cumfy as all the big name places. They always have great viewing times and I can always get a ticket. Its super clean also. I appreciate that they have slowly been making upgrades. My girlfriend and I used to go to Boston or Assembly row but this is just so SIMPLE. Plenty of parking also. Reminds me of a mom n pop trying to make it and i value that. read more

(For personal context: I love watching movies in theatres, and I have visited the 3-4 that come to mind in the Cambridge-Boston area) This is my favorite movie theatre in the Boston area. Biggest reason is how efficiently it is organized: - The tickets are all available on several screens. You don't have to wait on indecisive folks chatting with a cashier. - The concession stand is self-serve. This means the counter isn't hectic, the workers are efficient, and (again) you don't have to wait on indecisive folks chatting with a cashier. You grab your items, and when you're ready you go pay. The employees seem to benefit positively from this efficient setup. They are very relaxed and have very friendly demeanors. The movie experience is good. Seats are electric and comfortable. Even after the renovations this cinema is pretty bear. Food options are limited. Staff definitely does not seem psyched to work there. Of three staff members I dealt with, one was outright rude, one was dismissive, and one was very friendly. The theaters are small and the seats are comfortable. As I checked-in at Apple Cinemas I wondered why the place only had 13 reviews. They have a decent selection of movies playing, about 10 theaters, ample free parking, and seriously cheap ticket prices (you can come on a Tuesday for less than $5). Not to mention, it's close to the Alewife T Station and it's in Fresh Pond. Upon further review, I realized the majority of the patrons likely do not use computers as much as they use walkers and canes. We arrived at 5:10pm for a 5:30pm show, and when we walked into our assigned theater to await our movie, we were surprised to see the end of the previous movie (which was the same movie we were going to see) still playing. We walked out and awkwardly waiting in the tiny lobby for another 15 minutes before we could be seated for our show. Walking in a second time, to a now empty and well-lit theater, we were greeted by a pungent smell, a number of broken seats roped off with yellow plastic bags, and missing tiles. Based on the upkeep of the theater, I question the cleanliness of the concessions as well and would not recommend purchasing anything that isn't prepackaged. Clearly logistics and maintenance are not a high priority here. Once the previews began, we were in for a great movie experience. Probably one of the most interesting movie-going adventures to date. The commentary from other patrons was priceless, as was the moment when, during a scene in which the writer and producer probably intended to have movie-goers in tears, a hefty gentleman sitting in the center of the tiny theater began snoring rather loudly, creating an outburst of laughter from the rest of the room. I don't understand any of these negative reviews. Look, every Tuesday, movies are $4.75 (after tax). That's less than *half* what it costs *anywhere else*. And it's never *too* packed, plenty of free parking, and I've never had a bad visit. Sure, the screen is small and the place isn't very clean, but the seats are comfy and you *can't* beat that value. I'm more likely to watch movies because this place exists. I don't think to myself, "eh, is Ant-Man really worth $12?" because it's probably worth at least $5, right? Right? (It was worth it) Edit: The place was recently renovated - awesome!! Pleather electro-mechanical adjustable la-z-boy recliners - can lean so far back it's almost a bed. This was an interesting experience. I had never been to this movie theatre but it was the closest one and a very easy drive from where I was. I was dragged there on Valentine's Day to see Fifty Shades Darker (mistake #1). Even Jamie Dornan's good looks couldn't save this one. I had no idea what to expect and I was pretty shocked. There was only one woman working the food counter and movie tickets. There was popcorn all over the floor but because the woman was behind the counter, it didn't look like anyone was around to clean it up. The ticket prices are average, but I've seen a lot about student discounts so if you're a student, sounds like a steal! We walked up a couple flights of stairs to get to the movie. The layout is a little weird but we found our way. We stopped in the bathroom first and it seemed like there was a pipe leaking in the closet. When we walked into the movie, there were only two other people there so we had plenty of seats to choose from. The theater we were in was also pretty messy with popcorn and garbage on a lot of the seats. There were no staff to be found so I'm not sure if they wait til the end of the day to clean but luckily we found perfectly good seats, which were quite the experience. You can recline all the way back so that you're basically laying down. The seats were my favorite part. The good thing about this theater is that, at least on a Wednesday night, it's not packed. Plus the parking lot is huge. It's in the same strip as TJ Maxx, Whole Foods, and a few other stores so if you really wanted to, you could make a day out of it. read more

Walking into this place was such an experience. It's kind of shady, even the outside of the building looks a little dated and out of place. It's not really like a traditional movie theater - all the tickets come from little kiosks where you select your movie and time, I didn't see any actual people selling tickets. The concessions stand was interesting - all of the snacks are laid out almost like a gas station or convenience store, so you just take what you want and then pay for it. If you're expecting traditional movie popcorn, you won't find it here. I don't typically like lots of butter on my popcorn, but the popcorn here is very bland so if you don't put anything on it, it's just going to taste dry. Everything here is DIY - get your own food, your own tickets, your own drinks. They have coffee available, which is nice. The thing I don't like about this is the lines it causes when people are getting their own drinks and butter and stuff, because sometimes people tend to be rude and take their time when there's a long line behind them. There was water all over the floor the night I went, so guys were mopping right in front of the drink machines which made it a bit awkward to try and fill my cup. Once I got into the theater, I relaxed in the nice recliner chairs and enjoyed my movie. I'd come here again - tickets are on the cheaper side compared to other theaters, but it wouldn't be my first choice. A little too chaotic for me. read more

Apple Cinemas is a mixed bag of treats! I absolutely love their $5 Tuesdays where every ticket to any show is just $5. Beware that if you're planning to see a popular movie at a popular time on a Tuesday, you ought to buy your ticket online earlier that day - things do sell out. As others have said, there is tons of free parking and its across the way from a Trader Joe's and a Chipotle. So grab a snack and head on over because guess what? They don't care what you bring in the theater. I've eaten burritos, rice cakes, cookies, drank my own soda etc. at this theater and never once has anyone said anything. Here are the downsides: It is a little dirty - not the most dirty place I've ever been, but there might be a weird smell and some sticky floors and buttery seats. They don't play all the major movies - usually just one or two. The rest of the show list is full of foreign films and C-list movies. So if you're dying to see the new movie everyone is talking about and plan to see it for $5 on Tuesday - make sure you do your research because you might have to go to one of those fancy smancy joints to see it. The clean up crew is a little too eager to get people out of their seats; tonight they awkwardly stood there staring at us while the credits rolled. Overall - this place is alright! Not the most luxurious, but not the worst by any means. I think the $5 Tuesdays redeems a lot of the not-so-awesome parts. read more

I've been here three times now- comfortable seats, never overly crowded ( positive for me) clean bathrooms and polite staff. Admittedly I have come on Tuesdays because the tickets are half price. Come On people make this your date night place. A quick walk from alewife station or if you drive the theater is behind a strip mall so plenty o'parking. I believe there's 8 screens all are good size there's not extreme "flare" like other theaters. For instance the screen isn't always on with something to entertain you and there isn't constant ( every 20 min) screen times. But for me this place is now my go to movie theater. read more

Bad experience. No security. You can basically walk in without purchasing tickets. There was a guy sitting in our seat when we told him those were our seats (he was taking up two seats) he told us to go sit somewhere else. I dont think he purchased a ticket. I told him our tickets indicate these seats and asked him which seat his ticket indicates. He got upset but eventually moved (kept mumbling though). The theater recently implemented assigned seats and I dont think he knows about the change. I am pretty sure he is homeless, he had multiple bags with him; he reeked.... what's worse is that he was mumbling and loudly commenting during the entire movie. Also the walls are super thin, you can hear other movies playing in the next room.... I guess they have new seats that reclines. But the screen is small and high up on the wall. It's very hard to get a right angle for a good view. read more

Don't be fooled by the renovated seats. You can now reserve seating here by purchasing in advance, but you still have to wait in line as if you were just buying them to get your actual movie pass. They can't scan your e-tickets either, you have to have the actual email with the confirmation code (this took about 15 mins). The concession stand had one employee for the Star Wars opening weekend, and it might have been her first day seeing how she had to ask her manager how to cook a soft pretzel, and I had to ask for my popcorn to be completely filled because the bag had only been half unfolded. The whole place looks old and dingy. It is cheap and the seats are new, so if you want to save money it's fine, but I will never go here again. read more

Nice movie theater. Was very weary of this place as it has so many horrible reviews but it's actually pretty awesome! We went on a Tuesday so it was very busy but the staff served everybody quickly and professionally. The place was surprisingly clean considering it looked like they were understaffed. Definitely not anything like the pictures on here suggests! Tickets are cheap and food and beverages are as expensive as you can imagine but it's a cinema, you expect it. The seats are absolutely horrendously uncomfortable but I didn't let that effect my review since they are actively changing out their seats for new ones, they have one on show and it's super comfy! They give out old movie posters for free too which is nice! The customers behind us were extremely rude and annoying but that's not the theaters fault. Definitely come to this movie theater, especially on a Tuesday! read more

Booked tickets on line. Never got a confirmation email. Called the theatre and someone took the credit card number used and said it's ok. Your seats are confirmed. Got to theatre and again was told we were ok for the seats chosen. 2 minutes before movie begins got kicked out and they had double booked seats. All they could say was sorry sometimes the computer double issues the seats and gave us a receipt that says nothing but 2 tickets at 00. First time I have been to the movies since the pandemic and if this is the way they run their business it will be the last. read more

I've been enjoying Apple Cinemas since I moved to Fresh Pond about 4 years ago. The Tuesday night $4.50 special has only become more valuable since they've renovated every theater and replaced old seats with plush, comfortable, reclining, spacious chairs. Online ordering and assigned seating mean I can roll in right before the movie starts and not have to worry about getting my spot. There seems to be a lot of complaints about the theater being understaffed; ownership has basically eliminated the need for human interaction for ticket purchasing. I've always found the folks that work there extremely friendly and helpful on the rare occasion I need help. This cinema reinvigorated my love for going out to movies by offering fair pricing while meeting the levels of comfort and quality offered by the AMCs and Loews of the world. If you can live without the $18 IMAX tickets, this is the movie theater for you. If you are looking to see a popular movie on Tuesday, make sure you buy ahead online to secure your spot! read more

I gave this place 3 stars because it has all of the regular latest and greatest movies. There's ample parking, it is stuck behind a strip mall which is rather large in this Fresh Pond area. The place is small. The lobby is small. And they don't have mobile ticketing, so even if you buy your tickets online, you still have to go to the desk and get your tickets printed out. Which kind of defeats the whole purpose of online ordering in my opinion. When you enter the place, there is no way around the snack bar. You pretty much are funneled into that area before you can actually go into the theater. The bathrooms upstairs are small. I did not try the bathroom downstairs so I don't know if there's only two stalls like the ones upstairs. Definitely was in line after the show was over. While it wasn't dirty, it certainly wasn't the neatest place. There are a lot of kids hanging around and they don't seem to sweep up the pick up some of the litter. The seats were ample, and have cup holders and it was declined. So it was really nice to watch a movie in that kind of comfort. We were in theater 2, which is rather small. But that was fine. I don't think that I would want to sit any closer than row G. By the way, the rows go from A in the back towards G in the front. I don't mind small theaters, and I rather enjoy them for the coziness factor. This one could better with cleanliness and maybe get mobile ticketing. For those two reasons, I would probably go somewhere else first. But if I had to go here for some reason, I wouldn't really mind it. read more

This used to be my favorite theater in the area, but mannnn it has gone downhill recently. I love the seats, and there is always lots of parking available. But it was a MESS when I went over the weekend. Our theater clearly hadn't been cleaned after the last showing, but I have a feeling it may have been a few showings since the last cleaning. On the floor in front of my chair alone, there was an empty cup, a crumpled up tissue, and another wrapper. My husband's seat had a similar amount of trash in front of it. There was popcorn absolutely everywhere. The seat next to my husband's was covered in liquid - thankfully he was able to warn the seat owner before she sat down. The women's restroom in the lobby was also out of order. I hope they get things cleaned up soon - I can't imagine continuing the frequent this theater if it remains in this condition. read more
