Apple Crossgates continues to be a three-star experience, i.e. not great. We needed a battery for my wife's otherwise serviceable iPhone 12 and had the impression if we made an appointment and specified we were there for a battery replacement the process would be quick and easy. Instead we waited for an hour, much of what was spent with staff trying to upsell us to a new phone. When we finally convinced them we just wanted a new battery they said it would be another two hours. They managed to sell us an add-on battery pack ($50) through an uncharacteristically clueless salesperson who did not know that it came with a charging cable or that the cable, when discovered in the packaging, was not compatible with our phone. read more

Staff is quick to get to you despite it being incredibly busy. I imagine you must have an appointment to get any work done in the store if you're not there to simply purchase a product. Cases are a bit lacking I was looking for something more durable but only the "pretty" cases were available. If you're looking for a life proof type of case better go online. read more

This is a horrible apple store. I brought my iPhone 17 Pro max 3 times and having to bring it back to be fix again. They keep saying logic board so either apple do not carry reliable hardware anymore or the repair techs are incompetent. I have never experienced an apple store like this. I've never had an actual positive experience at this location... Back around 2015, I brought in my 2012 MacBook Pro which was having some charging issues. The fellow helping me, who had identified himself as a manager, went through all the basic checks which I had already done but still could not find the issue. So he began to dig a little deeper as I sat and watched. Shortly, another customer, a young lady, sat down next to us with the original white 2008 MacBook in pieces in a box. The guy who was helping me,clearly frustrated, finally said he had no idea what the problem was, didn't know what to suggest but that my MacBook was too old for Apple to diagnose or repair.... He then excitedly began to help the young lady with the 2008 MacBook in pieces in a box, stating that the original MacBooks were his personal favorite!! Apparently, my three year old MacBook Pro was "too old" while her seven year old unit was not... I have purchased several other Apple devices here through the years and while the pick up process can sometimes be quick and efficient, it usually is not. What doesn't help is the snotty and dismissive greeters who clearly have better things to do with their time than greet and check-in customers, which is what they are paid to do. It was one such a greeter I experienced today who just simply couldn't seem to be courteous or friendly, despite the store being very quiet, as I attempted to check in my for my appointment; evidently, it's not acceptable to be 8 minutes early. Anyway, she finally managed to do her job and I sat down to await h whatever genius was going to replace the battery in my iPhone. I had made the appointment two days prior after calling to be sure that a battery for my particular phone was in the store to be installed; I was confidently assured that it was, so I booked the appointment using their app. After driving one hour and 15 minutes to this location, I was informed that the battery for my particular phone was not actually in the store and ready to be installed. "But we can order it for you,bro."... Gee, could you? Nothing says we don't value our customers like wasting their time, which was exactly my experience at this location today. Again. Because I've had similar experiences over the years. It's interesting that every single person on staff in the store will gladly tell you that they are the smartest person in the room and know everything about everything. Except that they aren't. What they are is generally rude and condescending, and striving for mediocrity. Not every Apple store is like this, some are better while some are worse, but this one is a consistently poor experience. Unfortunately, nobody seems to care and hey, it's Apple! I have been going to this mall since I was a child in the late 2000s, and it used to be a safe and lively place to hang out with friends and make new ones. However, the mall has drastically changed and is no longer safe. Recently, I've observed gang members dressing in ski masks, harassing people, and causing trouble. It's become a dangerous environment, and what was once a fun social spot is now unrecognizable. Additionally, I was shocked to find out that there are no buses running after 5:00 p.m., which indicates how unsafe the area has become. The mall used to close around 10:00 or 10:30 p.m., with buses running until about 11:00 p.m., but now it's deserted early in the evening. When I was waiting for the bus, I was told by security there's no bus service after 5:00 p.m. Luckily, I had cash to take an Uber home, but this change is alarming. The mall needs to address these issues immediately--strict security, banning ski masks, and ensuring the safety of visitors. I used to go there every weekend; now I only go once a month read more

The staff at this place is amazing. We had Anna and she was so helpful, attentive and patient. She didn't hard sell us and treated us as if we were the most importable people in the store. She had to transfer everything from my old iPad to my new one and it just wasn't working. Undeterred she kept with it and explained everything to us along the way. She apologized for the delay and finally everything worked. When she tried to transfer my information from Verizon, I did not have my password handy so she walked me through the steps to change my password, so I would have service on my new iPad. I went in to have my iPhone 7plus serviced. My charge port stopped working and I wanted to have my battery replaced. I was met with a service tech who was shadowed by a supervisor. The tech went to get a cord and the supervisor assured me that this tech was very good. As they were running diagnostics on my phone, the tech was asking me questions like; do you like this size phone, what do you use your phone for, and are taking pictures important to you. If you ask me, it sounded more like he was getting ready to sell me a phone than fixing the one I had. Then the bad news came. The charging port was shot. He also told me that even if the port was good, replacing the battery could cause more damage than good. WHAT???? Are you saying that you can't replace batteries on iPhones? I was told I could get a $50 credit for this phone towards a new one. I stopped them dead in their tracks and said that if that's the case, I'll just go to my carrier because they have a deal on an iPhone 12 for $149.00 right now. He then told me that if I do go that route, he recommends that I come back to the Apple store and get the Apple Care policy for my phone in case anything should happen to it. Are you f-ing kidding me!!!!!! You can't fix this phone. You can't replace the battery. WHY would I pay you money just so you can sell me on another phone when it goes bad? Went to this store to find out what was wrong with my iPhone 7 and why it suddenly could not make or receive calls. I was scheduled by appointment to the genius bar. It's has always seemed chaotic and a little too noisy for me and for this time it seemed bit more. It seemed a little disorganized today. At least years before you waited in line and were greeted when it came to your turn to be waited on. This time I had to look around to see who was busy or not and had that "I can help you" look. It didn't make me feel welcomed. As a matter of fact, I felt awkward. At least for me it did. Trying to find who to go to or where to go to was somewhat vexing. I know I made an appointment, but should I be here? Am I in the wrong area i thought? Then when I managed to get myself noticed, I was sent to the wait area to stand or sit in the back on blocks. Blocks? It's ok I guess for some. That might be great idea in concept for a young person or maybe in San Francisco, but I don't know how well an elderly person or disabled person would have handled it. It was good that I didn't have to wait long though and through a rapid process of handed off from person to person, I finally got to the bar. They hooked up my phone like I did before coming in and after a half hour told me, yep, your reconditioned phone you bought from Straight Talk and was replaced a year or two ago is history. Customer service needs to be better thought out as far a design and who their customers are. Yes, the majority of apple customers will be getting older. Apple will have to adjust to this issue if it wants to remain competitive. Another issue was the crowd noise and that I was handed off from employee to employee. Sometimes I couldn't tell if they were talking to me or if they were continuing a conversation with someone else at the table. They did the best they could and were friendly and professional enough, but truthfully it didn't take a genius to figure out what I had a gut feeling about all along.... that the phone was kaput and there's nothing they could do about it! Brought my MacBook in 1.5 weeks ago for repair. Was told they had to ship it out and quoted me 3-5 days. Before turning my MacBook in to them, they advised me to turn off "find my MacBook". They provided me with a link to track my MacBook which was never updated. Called back today and was transferred to several agents until I spoke with Apple Crossgates who promised me that "they had eyes on my MacBook", when I addressed my concerns. Was then told that they would call me back with "more information" later in the day. Once called, I was informed that they had pretty much lost my MacBook upon sending it out. They told me this it was "now in the hand of UPS" and declined to help me any further. Per Apple's website, they should be dealing with this issue, as they were the ones to send it out. I thought all of the negative reviews was just fluff. However, after having to drive out there on two separate occasions with one week to still not have my issue resolved is just unreasonable. I cracked/chipped my iPhone 12 Pro Max screen while accidentally dropping it on my tile floor without a case on it. Okay, no big deal, I have AppleCare+, I'll just get my screen fixed. I set up an appointment for Tuesday 01/19/2021. I get there in plenty of time for my appointment. As I'm finally let in to see a genius, they advise me that they do not have the parts in store to fix my screen. I was upset but not the biggest issue. On 01/23/2021 I call the store and speak with a manager to make sure they have the parts to fix my screen. He assures me that they do and to call to set up a new appointment. I call and set up an appointment for 01/24/2021. Again, I get to the store in plenty of time. After waiting in line for 20 minutes it's finally my turn to see the genius. I walk up and explain to him that I was here to get my screen replaced. He says " your screen isn't damaged enough for us to replace it" I explained that with my line of work, if the screen gets any worse and gets water damage that I will have to pay even more money to get it replaced. He doesn't budge. So now I've wasted two hours driving back and forth to this store for absolutely nothing. Why didn't the genius I spoke to on the 19th inform me that my screen "wasn't damaged enough"? This is an absolute joke of an Apple Store and from now on I will just deal with Best Buy I guess. read more

A few days ago I brought my MacBook Pro into Apple Crossgates to have the battery serviced. Apart from the battery needing to be serviced, the laptop was in perfect working order when I handed it over to them. The following morning I returned to the store to pick up the laptop and was informed that they had declined to service the device because when they opened it up they found "bugs" inside it and declared it a biohazard because "one was still moving." While I've never seen any bugs going into or out of my laptop, given that the laptop is 6 years old, I wasn't shocked by the news that one or more bugs had climbed inside it at some point, and while I was disappointed I'd need to take the laptop to a third party repair facility to have the battery serviced, I considered it an inconvenience and nothing more. However, when I got home and turned the laptop on, I discovered the screen didn't work and had a crack in it. I immediately called Apple Support to report what happened, and followed up by calling the store to report the damage. Not only did Apple refuse to fix the damage that had been done to my laptop while it was in their possession, they've blatantly refused to assist in finding a third party repair company to repair the damage that was done to my laptop while it was in their possession. The (ONLY) remedy they've offered is a 20% discount on a new MacBook Pro, which was an offer extended by the same manager who responded to my report of the damage done by asserting that I couldn't prove the damage didn't occur in the small window of time between when I picked up the laptop and booted it up when I got home. In other words, I entrusted my laptop to Apple Crossgates to be serviced, they returned it to me in significantly damaged condition (rendered almost unusable), refused to take responsibility for the damage done, refused to repair the damage that had occurred while it was in their possession, refused to have a third party repair the damage that was done while it was in their possession, and the only option they've given me is paying them thousands of dollars for an upgrade that I didn't need (until they broke my laptop). Given that I wasn't in need of an upgrade since my laptop was still working perfectly prior to me entrusting it to the Apple Crossgates GeniusBar, they've put me in a position where the only option for remedying the situation involves me paying them multiple thousands of dollars for a new laptop (basically extortion), or paying out-of-pocket for a third party provider to repair the damage that Apple Crossgates inflicted on my device without just compensation. I've been a loyal Apple customer for years, have spent over $10,000 on their products and services during that time, and this is the first time I've ever had a device returned to me in worse condition than when I handed it to them. If they offered (any) reasonable way to resolve the damage they did, I wouldn't have an issue, but they haven't. A friend who heard about the situation reached out to Apple's Executive Relations, who were kind enough to contact me directly, but they failed to offer any reasonable solutions either. Apparently Apple's Corporate Policy is that if any bugs are found within your device (even so much as an ant), they immediately stop working on the device, will not reconnect any components they've disconnected or disassembled, label the device a "biohazard" (making it difficult to get repairs since even third-party repair shops that have a relationship with Apple won't touch it) and return the device to you in a significantly damaged state with no reasonable means of getting it put back into the condition it was in when you entrusted it to them. I'm disappointed to say that his experience has destroyed my trust in both the Apple Crossgates store and the Apple brand generally, and for a long-time Apple-Aficionado, I have no words to express the depth of that disappointment. Just the thought of parting with one's venerable iPhone from loss, lagging technology or for any reason can induce heart palpitations. This week, our bank's mobile app and the phone faced an unenforced divorce due to the phone's suddenly outdated technology to accommodate the bank's requirements for what's called ACH deposits. Arriving at a mall Apple store near Albany, NY a half-hour before the official opening, the doors finally opened. We were struck by the number of Apple employees-perhaps 25-compared to the few would-be customers. None of the employees as far as we could tell sported Apple IDs and most were wearing common street clothes. The absence of a professional looking cadre was palpable. They milled about in clusters doing little if anything that could have passed for assigned tasks. We were approached by a young fellow who mumbled something or other when we noted the colors of the basic new generation iPhone, black in particular. The clerk quickly returned with a woman who wore an apple frock of some sort who dressed me down for making a break-the ice comment about the color black. She said there was no room for jokes, 'the world had changed' and customer drollery was not welcome. She disappeared for some minutes and returned with bad news. The basic and popular SE iPhone was not in stock and commended me to an ATT store. The difference in culture at ATT and Apple was stark. An attentive, well-spoken assist vs. the Apple's relative hostility. Since our old phone was still efficient but lacked a required ACH ability due to our bank's updated requirements, we settled on a pricier iPad. The direct Apple experience left one with a queasy feeling-a regional store with a quirky culture-to avoid in future. read more

When picking up my Iphone after a battery change, I freaked out. I still don't know why and I only know what happened from the EMT in the ambulance with me. Medical issues aside, I was horrified (and still somewhat disbelieving) that I was abusive to anyone, let alone someone who'd been warm and professional. In 62 years, I've never ever done anything anywhere close to that. I felt terrible for him and had every intention of asking the manager to set up a time for me to apologize (and hopefully get more detail). When I left the hospital the next day, my phone was gone. Also one air pod and my wired Apple earphones, all of which had been in my bag. That's when I learned that the geniuses had disabled 'find my phone' and not reenabled it. (They didn't tell me they'd be disabling it. While trying frantically to contact Apple without a phone and when I'd 2FA'd everything, I found that tidbit in the appointment email you get beforehand. Otherwise, I would have had to think I took a break from my mental implosion to turn it off, then resume my breakdown). I (or someone) paid them. Find my phone should have been re-enabled asap before telling me it was ready. W/o find my phone, I can't put it in Lost mode or erase it remotely. Or, like, find it. I just have to wait and see if someone feels in the mood to destroy my life. So, I'm thinking I'll pass on any apologies. He's more than avenged himself. read more

Wow. This store may be the reason I buy another MacBook despite some of the problems I've had with the one currently in my possession. There was my last story about how they completely replaced the hard drive and updated the operating system for free even though my computer was beyond the warranty nd I neglected to purchase Apple Care. And I wasn't sure it could get much better than that. Well, this time my screen stopped working properly. I was prepared to scrap my almost four year young laptop for a newer shinier model. The logic was that the expense to even have it looked at, much less fixed, would be prohibitive and spending good money after bad. But I talked to one of those helpful blue-shirts and he told me that problem diagnosis and estimates for repair were free. Score. I didn't have an appointment, but the next opening was in five minutes. I took it. And it turns out that my repair would cost less than $100. They just had to order the part, and would give me a call. Score. Next day, the part was in. All I had to do now was back up my data, just in case, and bring in my machine. Easy enough. But I was a bit apprehensive about being without my lifeline to the world. When I brought it in, I was told the official line was that the repair should take five days. Off the record, I was told probably two to three. Next day, I get a call and they tell me the computer is ready. Score. I go in to get my computer, give my paperwork to another helpful blue-shirt who grabs it from the back. Not only is it fixed, but the screen and the case are cleaned. His tricked out iPod not only has a laser scanner, but also a credit card reader. There is no standing in line or waiting to pay. The whole thing happens while my kids are playing games on the kids computer, as I'm there watching them to make sure they don't start fighting. Score. Love. Love. Love. They saved me over $1,000. Did it quickly. With a smile. Exceeding my expectations every step of the way. Just try and get this kind of experience at Best Buy or with any kind of PC manufacturer. read more

I had a Genius appointment for an issue I was having with one of our companies iPads. After a little trouble shooting the associate decided that there was a problem with the iPad, it was still under warranty so he swapped it out with a new one. Since we had backed up all our data on iCloud we were able to restore all the important data while I was still in the store. I have always been pleased with the service at this Apple store. The classes and workshops they have are also beneficial and enjoyable. read more

These guys are the worst. They will lie to you and try to get you to spend tons of money you don't need to. I went in because I was having trouble with the keyboard on my 2016 macbook pro. They said they would have to strip it down to factory settings and if that didn't work - jack it up, take it apart and see if they could find something mechanically wrong with it. If it needed a keyboard it would cost $500. At no point did they suggest simply cleaning the keyboard. I took the computer home with intentions of having my files taken off so I could have them start to work on it. They said they've never heard of any issues with the keyboards. In the mean time my partner started to research any common issues with 2016 macbook pro keyboards. There are tons of sites with keyboard issues being the number one problem. Apple's own support page has lots of threads with people asking about the same problem. They designed a new butterfly keyboard that apparently catches a lot of dirt. Apple's own site gives you tips on cleaning it. Apple Genius Bar employees at Crossgates Mall are just big fat f*cking thieves! Beware. read more

Unbelievably unhelpful. Condescending. We were given incorrect information and were sent home without the correct adapter--despite repeated requests and inquiries. It is now taking us hours to do at home what they should have been able to help us with in minutes on site. I understand Covid is putting a strain on all of us--but the basic lack of service and courtesy is astonishing. The size of a customers purchase shouldn't matter, but I just spent nearly $4,000 for my small business. Save yourself the trouble and ask any young person in your life to fix your phone. read more

It's hard to get the attention of the staff here, and there aren't quite enough old geezers on staff to balance the kindergartener digital natives who predominate on staff. It's busy enough even on a calm weekday morning that I doubt we'd ever be able to get any serious technical help, but you never know. That said, it's the standard Apple Store, which is to say they put some modest thought into evolving (though not revolutionizing) the retail concept, and this is exactly like every other Apple Store I've been to in every respect. The pros are you can play with the toys for pretty much as long as you want without being hassled, and if you can get a staffer, you get the pay-on-the-spot service you used to get from drygoods stores 100 years ago, back when the Apple II was around. This Apple store was great, easy to access, right off the thruway, in a very nice, large, indoor mall. I went to get my Mac Pro laptop fixed. As soon as I approached, I was greeted and signed in. (I did have an appointment.) I had to wait only minutes to see a tech person. I reviewed the laptop problem with him and left my computer to be fixed. As promised, they contacted me later to tell me they'd be sending the computer on to a more advanced Apple repair center. Great communication, fast and very friendly service. Very glad I went here. My 70+ year old mom needed a new iPhone. And she wanted to check out the options and have someone set it up for her at the Apple store. Easy, right? No. They had no record of the appointment I made for her. She had to wait for another 40 minutes for a 10 minute appointment. During the appointment the sales person told her they would sell her a phone but not set it up. I made the appointment figuring this was the way to get Apple's great customer service post-covid. I get all the health protections and social distancing. But you can still help out your customers that take the time to shlep to the mall to have a HUMAN BEING take care of them.
