'Tis the season for your favorite apple goodies, and Apple Hill has everything that your little heart could ever desire! Apple pies, apple fritters, apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple beer, apple wine, caramel apples... apple EVERYTHANG!!! I visited Apple Hill for the first time ever last month, and my oh my was it an experience! The drive down US-50 is so beautiful. It's been years since I've made the drive up to Tahoe, but I don't ever remember passing by Apple Hill. But, this area is so much fun! An apple and foodie lover's paradise for sure. If you're a lover of apple farms, ranches, and orchards, Apple Hill is definitely the spot for you. But even if you AREN'T a huge fan of apple farms; Apple Hill seriously has something for everyone. You'll find wineries, breweries, corn mazes, pumpkin patches, picnic areas, and tons of activities for families and kids to enjoy. And of course, eating and purchasing the goods. Had some of the best apple pie and THE best apple cider that I've ever had here. There are so many different farms to choose from, but my personal favorites were Delfino Farms and Rainbow Orchards. I would recommend Rainbow Orchards for their apple cider and those amazing apple cider donuts, and Delfino Farms for the overall experience. Rainbow Orchards is a smaller farm but offers a wonderful variety. They also have a nice space to picnic and relax. Delfino Farms was an all around win for me. Not only was their French Apple pie and apple cider scrumptious, but their grounds were stunning and offered some of the best views within Apple Hill! They have a beautiful nature walk that will take you throughout their vineyards and their animal farm, and a big grassy hill which is great for picnics and kid friendly entertainment. I absolutely adored Delfino Farms! There's so much to do within Apple Hill and it's the perfect place to stop during the holiday season. If you've never experienced Apple Hill, you definitely should! You guys this one is close to my heart. I have been traditionally going up to Apple Hill since I was very small. Every year when the weather turns colder we wait until November to head up the hill. I have been to all the spots. I want you to experience the best, so here goes my recommendations of a must see must go locations located in Apple Hill Camino Ca. We always start at the far end and work our way back out towards placerville to exit. Grandpas Cellar; recently repurchased but continues to exhibit that cozy charm and yummy treats. Excellent gift shopping stop as well. Drew Bean Farms; used to be Bodhaine's is a location you must stop for brunch or lunch or a pie to go! Also repurchased they turned this into the cutest apple farm ever! Very modern. Cozy. The food is amazing. Rainbow Orchard--Oh my Oh my! Cider donuts stacked high! These are the original cider donuts in apple hill and I'm sorry it's the only one as in the best! $10 half dozen or more. Fresh made to order! The sugar the cinnamon omg! A must stop. High Hill Ranch; perfect ranch style farm perfect for the whole family! They have a market; a pie house with fantastic pies and comfort food; a duck pond and pony rides for the kids; a FUDGE factory candy store and kid or adult will be like -a kid in a candy store. My go to favorite every year is the Kahlua and Jack Daniel's truffles. Perfect gifting. The candy apples are really cool and yummy. Every year they have many vendors to shop small business for unique creative gifts. Or for yourself. Excellent apple pies to go frozen or fresh. This is my go to apple pie buy. I feel they know how to make a killer good pie. Abel's; okay the best garlic fries ever. The pies are good also. Cute place to stop and relax. Vendors on sight. Lastly if your looking for the best wine in apple hill look no further then Boeger winery. An establishment with roots. This place you pull into a scene from Italy literally. I remember it before to be a nice place to pass the day. Things were a lot more reasonably priced. A gallon of fresh apple cider this time around was $12.95 ! While a rock solid frozen apple pie came out to $21.95. I remember the area where the farmer's market used to be full of apples hence it being "apple hill" however this time around it was slim pickings. Not so good looking granny smith's at that. Made a pit stop in the 50 from south lake tahoe. I think they had an art fair/ farmers market on sunday! Super crowded, but in good energy. They had a variety of booths for crafts, a fudge store, apple barn (apple store), bbq, a winery( that sells spiked cider), mexican food and a pie restaraunt ( which sells fast food too). They have another part called boa vista but we went inside more. Parking is pretty cramped and on dirt road but well managed by traffic controllers, and free! So sad the apples can't be picked :( getting out has a little bit of traffic too. 10/10 recommend the pie! It's not too sweet/spiced with perf apple flavor and the right amount of buttery crust. They sell whole pies outside (barely any line) if you like them for like 20$. Single slices are 5.50. Theres plenty of seating(big wooden benches) and water/utensils in the restaraunt. Apple barn kinda looks like an open stall store and they have a variety of no sugar jams, pickled items and of course apples sold by the box/lb. They also sell gallon apple juice, and apple beer. The donuts are found at apple barn where they have 3 windows to buy them so it goes really fast. Mastercard/visa and cash are accepted. They cost around 1.60 each with fritters costing 5.5 for one. Tbh the donuts taste the same so I wouldn't really bother with buying multiple varieties. I loved the plain- it was fluffy, thick, buttery and slightly cinnamony. Hot cider cups are a little small ( typical styrofoam cup size). The caramel apples are right by the donuts and 5.5 each. The caramel is super buttery and the apple is softer than the typical hard crispy apples! The first bite is just amazing. However, they don't cut it for u ( but I was able to slice it with a plastic knife). I feel this is a great pit stop (we spent 30 min) or a day place to take your kids :) read more

Throughout the span of 50 years, the Apple Hill Growers association has worked hard in tailoring the perfect experience, filled with lots of family fun. We love coming here every year - especially during fall when the leaves are changing and the weather is cooler. It's just the best time of the year. We enjoy eating at high hill, grabbing an apple beer or cider, and of course the infamous apple donuts and pies. It's a great place for kids and family. Lots of activities such as face painting and sand arts and crafts for the kids, shopping and browsing for the adults, and wine/beer for us ;) We can easily spend hours here. We had some friends visiting from the Bay Area so we wanted to take them to Apple Hill. We tried to avoid going around Halloween, but had no choice this time around. We knew it would be packed in October so we figured we'd do the next best thing---go EARLY in the day before the crowds came. I did some research on the best orchards/ranches to visit and here's what we did: First Stop: HIGH HILL RANCH (right off the freeway) We got there around 8:30am. Fun things to do, including tons of craft/art tents, a fishing pond (I remember fishing there was a kid and my dad having me throw the fish back in and explaining to me that there's no inlet for the fish to swim in, which means they put the fish in the pond. That made a lasting impression for me), a Fudge Factory nearby (which was closed), a bakery, and lots of apples. I noticed there wasn't an apple cider tasting area that I was used to....found out later that just the day before, there was a recall on their apple cider due to e.coli concerns. I bought a cute Halloween shirt at one of the stands because it was so cold that day! Second Stop: BOA VISTA (near High Hill) Great bakery and store here. I bought a huge branch of brussell sprouts for around $5.99. We also got 2 different varieties of Asian pears. We loved their sample station, where we got to try different kinds of apples, pears and cider. The Fujis were great, Asian pears amazing, and the Arkansas black apples were very tart! Fun place to go. AND if you check in on Yelp, they give you a free cup of apple cider. We thought it was a literal cup, but we were so pleasantly surprised when we were given a BOTTLE of apple cider. Nice! Third: ABEL'S APPLE ACRES Fun place for kids. We didn't have any with us so we just enjoyed their amazing GARLIC FRIES. Wow. Around this time, the crowds were starting. The cars lined up to go to HIGH HILL stretched for miles. Phew....we were so glad we avoided those crowds!! Fourth: RAINBOW ORCHARDS Busy place with a really long line for their bakery. We got in a short line and bought a caramel apple for $4 to take home. Had it later and WOW...it was amazing. Fifth: BILL'S APPLES/FELICE'S DOLLS Came here by recommendation of another friend. It was very different from the other orchards we went to. When we drove up, our friends said it looked like the front of Disneyland with all the flowers. It was pretty. Calm. Lots of greenery. They didn't have much though, just some knickknacks. The best thing is that they peel an apple with their cool apple peeler/corer and give you a whole apple to sample! That was pretty cool. We were tempted to buy the peeler/corer machine for $25 but figured we had enough gadgets in the house already. Six: APPLE RIDGE FARMS Wasn't on our original list but when we passed it on the way to Bill's Apples, we wanted to stop by. Cool place. Tons of things to see. Their little gift shop had great samples of this caramel corn I wish we had bought. Their bakery was neat too. Our friend bought an apple pie for our party that night and BOY it was heavy! We weighed it when we got home and it was 4.8 pounds. It was a hit that night! We got some apple donuts and the apple crumb cake. All were great. In general, Apple Hill is great! I'd probably go in September or November, or on a weekday. If you have to go in October on a weekend, go right at opening (around 8:00-8:30am for most of these orchards) and get out of there by 10-11am, when the crowds start. One guy commented that when he comes in November, there are 6 people standing in line at the bakery. When we went on October 24, there were about 50 people in line. Date: 10/7/2015 Time: 11:00 AM 65° Sunny About once a month, my husband and I join a group of senior citizens from Mastick Senior Center for a bus trip/tour to different venues. This month the trip is a tour of the different apple orchards/farms in the Placerville/Camino area hosted by the Apple Hill Growers Association (hereafter, AHGA). Once we arrived at the High Hill Ranch in Placerville, the tour guide, representing AHGA, handed us their Apple Hill Cider Press 2015 - 2016 map and farm guide, a prepaid green ticket for either an apple fritter or a donut and a beverage. Also, there was an order form for whatever flavor pie I wanted to purchase from the Pie House Restaurant. A whole apple pie was $15.00 and a whole berry pie was $17.00. The map and farm guide is filled with a wealth of information as to what the various farms, orchards, bake shops and vineyards have to offer to the public and their respective locations and schedules. The first stop on the tour was the Woodshed Gift Shop on the High Hill Ranch premises to get the apple fritter and coffee or apple cider. I usually don't eat apple fritters because 1/2 of the leftover fritter is tossed in the garbage can later in the day. However, the complimentary apple fritter I received was fresh, warm and moist. The fritter filled with finely chopped apples, streaks of cinnamon and topped with a glaze melted in my mouth. It was the best tasting apple fritter that I have ever had. Again, I ate half of the fritter and saved the remaining half for a snack on the way home. I could not stay long to browse around High Hill Ranch or the Woodshed Gift Shop, as our group was on a guided tour to two other farms before returning for a BBQ lunch later in the afternoon. If you want a breath of fresh air and get away from the noise of an urban city, I suggest a drive to the outskirts of Placerville to Apple Hill farms for a weekend outing. When I was young, my parents would always take my sister and I to Apple Hill every year. It's definitely a lot more than "a hill", as it has grown larger over the years. Apple growers display their fruits of their labor with popular varieties of apples from red delicious, golden delicious, to Granny Smith, and so much more! Vendors set up to offer homemade baked apple desserts, caramel apples, ciders & juices and even has expanded into souvenirs, gifts and crafts. We never go home empty handed! But, like I mentioned, it has grown so large to a point that everyone around makes a point of visiting during the fall season. The roads to the businesses are small as you wind throughout the lovely countryside which is another attraction in itself. Several wineries and breweries also participate in the festivities. With that in mind, the downside can be a lot of traffic, long lines and tourists galore! My earliest memories of simpler times are no more, so visiting Apple Hill is not as relaxing as it once was, but if you love the hustle and bustle of apple minded people, it's worth checking out at least once a year! read more

So good! I come here to get the sweets and pastries, not necessarily the savory food. Apple hill is known for their pies, so I purchase pies here every year and they're so good! We also got donuts and apple fritters, and they were all amazing! We ordered: sour cream apple, caramel apple, and Dutch crunch. The slices were so thick and fresh, caked with apple on the inside. ITS SO WARM! So freshly baked, incredible. Donuts: these have a cake consistently, no necessarily a spongy, fluffy texture that falls apart which we see as traditional donuts. With this said, it still is incredibly soft. The donuts are always hot and freshly made! There's various topping flavors, we ordered 4 different ones. They're spongy and fluffy, thick so you get a good bite and it's not over fried. The apple fritters are also so so good!!!! You have to try all these goodies when you visit! read more

It's that time of year!!!! I love coming to Apple Hill, with or without kids! I came here specifically on a Monday to avoid traffic, long lines and the huge crowd. Apple Hill is such a treat, here are a list of things I did while I was there. (all adults) First things first! To the Fudge Factory!! If you're coming to Apple Hill, this is a must do, simply because there's so much to do at this one location. There's arts and crafts, a candle making stand, pumpkin patch, a pond, and more! At this location we got Apple Beers $5- pretty Good! it was at a stand right before the Fudge Factory. And of course we got caramel popcorn $7, peanut brittle $7 and Caramel Apples $6! Next stop is my fav place- Abel's Apple Acres! Best sandwiches and apple pies! See my review for more details. Be sure to grab a map! Next is, O'Halloran's Apple Trail Ranch- You can pick your own apples here, but I come here to drag the little red wagon out to the pumpkin patch so I can pick my own pumpkins. I got my sugar pumpkins from here $2 each, perfect for baking! There's some nice wineries here, we stopped at Madrona Vineyards and ParaVi Vineyards. Next is, Rainbow Orchards for they have the BEST Apple Donuts in Apple Hill!! $1 each but you can't just buy one! ;) Next is, Boa Vista Orchards- They're one of the few that stay open year around. You will find the Best Apple Turnovers $2 each and Apple Cider $6-9? (Can't exactly remember) here. They also have barbeque here, a farmers market and wine tasting as well. So whether you're coming here with a group of friends or here for a family day, you'll definitely have a great time. So better go now before the season ends! Fun Day at Apple Hill!" Julie and I went up to Apple Hill after hearing about it and driving by the signs for years. We had a lot of fun! Highly recommended for couples and Families with kids. WARNING: Whatever you do.. Buy some Barsottis Apple Juice.. oh man, this is not the sugar water we grew up on.. This is the BEST apple juice. I didnt know it could taste this good...Buy enough to take home.. like $6.00 for big jug.. Go to Barsottis itself or get it at the growers. They sell other kinds, but this is Da Kine... We went in Late October so I dont know if that's hi season or not but it had a good crowd. Essentially its an area along Highway 50 after Placerville (heading East) and near the little town of Camino. I'd say its 20 square miles within which there are maybe 25 growers, bake shops, breweries, shops, along the windy roads It's a lot of fun. you get a map and just drive down the road, or catch a shuttle that leaves from a nice park and ride type of lot near the freeway. The shuttles seemed to come by every 10 minutes or so at the major growers. We drove. It was a nice scenic drive too. Most of the growers have similar types of venues and food but it is still really fun. Each place has its own flavor: Picnic tables, patios, open areas, stores selling apple centric foods; Pies, Pastries, Fudge, apple juice, BBQ, Hamburgers, Veggie Burgers, Salads, etc..and oh yeah APPLES and other fruits too.. Pears! Lots of places have neat stuff for kids to do. All the places have some handful of crafts booths. And yes, they are the typical jewelry, soaps, signs, and t-shirts crafts..so that's not why ya go. We first stopped at Mill View where they have a PIg Roasting in a Big BBQ every day. They sell a Pulled Pork Sandwich there from the pigs. It was very tasty but not super sauced and sweet. For $8.50 ya get a Pulled pork Sandwich, a little cup of salad that had apples, walnuts, pears and a really good windsor sauce., A little cup of applesauce and a fat slice of pie. Not a bad deal. The pie was quite good. Here you could sit on a patio or under apple trees. Slices of different pies is a fun thing to do! This place had little Pony Cart rides for kids. A cart pulled by the 2 littlest ponies ya ever saw. Then there is Eldorado. Buy your Apples here. They have crates and crates of about 15 different apples outside. Some I never heard of. I bought some WineSaps. MAN ARE THEY GOOD! Roma, Gala....They had the Arkansas Black.. Didnt try that.. All the apples were about half what you would pay at Safeway. So buy a bag. I also bought Bartlett and Asian pears here. Cheap... They had a big pond with a little train that goes around it. and a picnic area. Jack Russel Brewery had Tri Tip BBQ, a tasting room with great beer and $3.00 10 oz pints. We had the Apple Ale (of course) and a Lager. you can taste the beer then buy a "Growler" - a big jug of beer they tape the cap on and you buy it take away. Fun place. Big open area out front, Kids and dogs playing. Not much shade though. Then We went to Honey Bear.. A nice place with a big, well stocked store of apple pies , slices, food to go pies unbaked and baked, fudges, and carmel apples, pastries, etc.. BBQ of course! A big patio overlooking an open area where they had a hay maze for kids. Then on to Boa View, a nice place with a HUGE Market that has every type of apple food item, garlic, olives, and all manner of fresh fruits, Apples, Lemons, pears, everything.. My first time at Apple Hill! It was a busy Saturday, with a lot of cars. I visited several bake shops. Rainbow Orchards (4 stars): There is a picnic area. I sampled the apple cider, and it was cold and crisp. Apparently, I missed out on the hot apple cider donuts. Next time! Mill View Ranch (3 stars): This place was less busy compared to the rest of the places I went. If you have kids, there's an Old-West style miniature town for them. Fudge Factory Farm (3 stars): The store is small and there was a long line out the door. It was also hectic. I was a bit irritated that one of the workers skipped right past me and helped the person behind me first. :/ I bought a small piece of pumpkin and mochachino fudge. After a bite, I decided that I'm not a fudge person. They were VERY sweet. Besides fudge, they sell a variety of other sweets. I wished I ordered their caramel apple sundaes instead, because my friends seemed to enjoy that a lot. High Hill Ranch (3 stars): It was the biggest and busiest stop. There were plenty of craft vendors for people who are into that. There are also a fishing pond and hayrides. I still hadn't purchased an apple item yet, so I thought this place was as good as any. The line was long, but there is a shorter cash only line. I ordered an apple donut and was a little disappointed. I liked how it had pieces of apple in it, but it was served cold. Abel's Apple Acres (4 stars): It's a great place to bring kids. There's a maze, pony rides, bungee trampoline, and water walking balls for them. The Apple Barn with Bake Shop had a long line. My friends bought several things here, which they all said were good. I had a great time overall. I definitely want to visit again in the future, especially since I didn't try many apple items. I've lived in reno for 4 years and every fall I hear people begin to talk about Apple Hill again. This year, I decided to be one of them. I did a bunch of research online as to which farms would be best for my group and I and then we set off on our adventure in the early morning hours of a Saturday. We arrived to our first farm by 9:15AM. We left the Apple Hill area around 2PM. Overall, had the instructions on the site been more specific for the shuttle, I would have been WAY happier. They do not mandate masks and it was super crowded, no type of social distance in the building I feel like that's the least you can do considering you're in a building. I love apple hill! Every year my family make a weekend trip to apple hill and all the wineries in the area. Nothing brings a family together like wine and apples... The variety of wineries, activities for the children and fruits they offer is amazing. Putting together such an event is a big task and i love how it brings the community together. Stumbled upon some Apple Hill brochures while staying at a Best Western in Cedar Grove. Looked interesting and since we were so close, why not. I'm glad we did. The Apple Hill Growers Association is an collection of ranches, wineries, spas and even a micro brewery that is on a scenic drive. It allows you to cruise around and stop at whatever orchard/winery/etc. catches your eye. We stopped at the High Hill Ranch, Abel's Apple Acres and the Boeger Winery. Purchased an apple pie at High Hill. The pie was freshly baked, but packed it up to go. We walked around their grounds, which has a craft fair, picnic grounds and a small pond. Abel's Apple Acres has a great bakery. We stopped and got some apple turnovers, fritters and apple butter. The turnovers were soooo good. I kicked myself for not buying more. The Apple Hill scenic drive is really nice if you have a family with small kids and want to do a picnic or family road trip. If you know the San Diego area, you will get this reference. Apple Hill is like Julian's big brother on steroids. We went primarily for wine-tasting and some apple picking. Who knew there were this many apple farms?!! And that many varieties of apples. It's pretty mind-blowing. We only had time to visit 2 apple farms and 3 wineries. There are literally dozens more apple farms one could go to (not as many wineries but enough to interest any wine-lover). There is also a brewery up in apple country although we skipped this. I will review the farms and the wineries separately. The area is gorgeous this time of year with the turning leaves, although it was quite chilly as a storm was coming in. Make sure you bundle up and you will enjoy the crisp, autumn mountain weather. I would give it 5 stars, but the place is a zoo on the weekends. But it is doable and some places were a little less impacted than others. Depends on where you go. I still highly recommend this as a fun weekend trip if you live in the Bay Area. You can find this place on your way to Tahoe. They are supposedly famous for their apple dishes. Apple cider, apple juice, apple pie of all kinds, etc etc! I tried the caramel apple pie and it was so good. It was loaded with filling and had a thin flake-y crust. Their apple juice is delicious too; it wasn't too sweet and was filled with lots of apple flavor. The people who work here are super nice! Had a wonderful time here with the family! Great place to spend a day outdoors, sipping on the freshest apple cider and noshing delicious, homemade apple pie. This is a sprawling collection of independent fruit orchards and farms, each having unique fresh fruit and baked delicacies. You can certainly spend a day tooling around the various ranches, and there are plenty of local vinyards in the vicinity as well! I couldn't imagine a more perfect setting for the Apple Hill Orchards--prime smack in the gently rolling foothills of the Sierra. The prices on fruit are very reasonable, and there are a ton of different kinds of apples alone. We liked Rainbow (great apple doughnuts), Larsen (cool farm "museum") and Kids Inc. (excellent baked apple pies) the best, but each ranch has its own individual charm. Enjoy a leisurely day out at Apple Hill, it's entirely worth it. read more

We've gone almost every autumn in recent years. In past years, the orchard outlets were a number of diamonds in the rough, with a good country feeling. This year, it's starting to feel like a tourist trap with aspirations of an amusement park. Prices on food have gone up, and now they are charging for parking too. Food prices were already high for a rural area. The lines are longer, the traffic slower, and most of the restrooms are very dirty and not stocked with paper or towels. One pleasant standout is O'Halloran's Apple Trail Ranch on Cable Rd. Their prices are good, they have a wide variety of pumpkins for sale, clean restrooms, and a nice seating area behind the building. We'll probably give this area one more chance, but if they don't improve, it will be our last visit. read more

Do you love fall? Do you love apples? Do you love winery's? Do you love pumpkins? Do you love baked goods?? This is the place for you. The only down fall is the traffic! This was clearly a small town that was not set up for the hordes of people that descend on apple hill every fall! But is you are willing to deal with lots of traffic, you need to come here! There are an overwhelming amount of apple growers here, so I would suggest doing a little research on the best ranches for you. (On Yelp...duh). There are places that specialize in pies (apple ridge, grandpas cellar). Great brewery's (jack Russell). The best apple doughnuts ever(rainbow). Apple cider and apple baked goods everywhere. Some ranches offer pony rides (for the kids, sorry adults). Gold panning, fishing, face painting, craft booths, and pumpkin patches. There are even Christmas tree farms. The winery's in the area are good. If you need a break from the traffic, check them out. If you can, try to come on a week day! That will cut down on some of the traffic! Or earlier in the season! If you have to come on the weekend before Halloween, just be prepared for traffic. The highway will have most of the exits shut down, it's annoying, but way safer! This is always on our fall bucket list! It's so much fun for the whole family! Just do your research before you come, the large amount of places can be overwhelming! read more

I love, love , love Apple Hill! We go every Fall to gorge on all things Apple. I cannot give Apple Hill five stars, though, because the crowds are just outrageous! The traffic, the lines, the pushing and shoving--you have to be pretty dedicated to eating lots of apples, or you are not going to have a fun time here. And anybody who dislikes crowds or long lines should definitely stay at home. That said, I LOVE APPLE HILL! If I were more dedicated, I might go through and review each orchard individually, but I really don't feel like doing that, because I have been to many, many orchards in Apple Hill. So here is a list of my favorites: High Hill: Number one on the Apple Hill map, and right off the highway, this is the largest of all the orchards and also the busiest. You will kill about 30 minutes in your car just trying to get into this place. Every year I'm tempted to skip it, but I never can because this is where we get APPLE CIDER MILKSHAKES. I loves me some apple cider milkshakes. We also buy our cider here. Boa Vista: Not far from High Hill, so the traffic is pretty bad for this orchard, too. They have the best selection of produce, if that's what you're looking for, and a great selection of jarred foods. We always stop here to get our pumpkin apple butter, a variety of jams, and maybe some olives. I usually nab a caramel apple here, too. Rainbow Orchards: Three words--APPLE CIDER DOUGHNUTS! I would make the trip to Apple Hill for these doughnuts alone. They are so good fresh and warm; we usually just sit and gorge ourselves on a dozen before they get cold, knowing that once we take them home, they aren't going to be nearly as heavenly. They also have really good corndogs here. Plubell's Family Orchards: We usually come here for the petting zoo and the pumpkins and the tire swing, but I have to say they seem to be slacking a bit. Our visit here this year wasn't nearly as enjoyable as it usually is. They just don't seem to be trying very hard. Abel's Apple Acres: Pony rides and a hay maze make this a great place for kids, plus they have outstanding pies and fudge. Good BBQ here, too. I am guessing that they have good apple fritters, but I can only guess because every time I come here, they are out of them. Grandpa's Cellar: My favorite place for pies. They have an amazing selection! It's also a beautiful place for a picnic. And there are also some disappointing orchards... Larsen Apple Barn: I HEAR they have amazing apple turnovers here, but I wouldn't know because they are ALWAYS CLOSED! Bavarian Hills Orchard: I like it when they do their little Octoberfest thing, but they are SO SLOOOOOW that I no longer bother with this place. You can stand in line there for an hour! Kids Inc.: We visited this orchard for the first time this year, and I have to agree with other reviewers--there aren't many great things for kids here. Kind of boring, actually. I think Abel's is a much better place for kids. Any of the Christmas Tree Farms: I got the swell idea one year that if Fall was so fun at Apple Hill, going Christmas Tree hunting would be, too. How very disappointing! I have gone to Apple Hill many times in the fall and really enjoyed it. The apples are harvesting and the farms are all a busy with activity and food, drink, entertainment etc. I have bragged about it to many. Well when I received notice about their spring time Apple Blossom Festival I decided this would be a new time to go and experience spring time in Apple Hill. I decided to take along 20+ friends and make a weekend of it. But as I was planning the weekend event for my group I was awaiting updated information from the AH Growers Assoc. It was due to come out end of Feb. but was not available, then it came out late March. I told my group all about the farms/ranches that would be participating in it and I created a route that we would follow for stops during the day. We rode up on a Friday evening so we could spend the night and get an early start the next day to all the farms. We had 9 spots marked on our map to stop at and enjoy the festival activities. So we started out and made our first stop, no activity in fact the place was closed, not a good sign. The women there told us that not many were participating in the weekend events and we would be hard pressed to find anything going on. WHAT THE HECK NOT GOOD TO HEAR when you have almost 30 people with you planning go get some good apple goodies etc. So then on the stop 2, nothing, stop 3, nothing, in fact out of all of our stops only one was open with minimal going on but the store and no lunch food. Let's just say I was beyond DISAPPOINTED AND APOLOGIZED TO MY GROUP. Of course they said not my fault but STILL!!! I knew there may not be blossoms on the trees yet with all the rain and little sun but I did not think that the farms/ranches who were stated to participate would not do so. Anyway after all these disappointments we went into Camino and had a very nice lunch, German food etc. unfortunately I can not remember the name but I will look them up so I can give them a review too. We stayed over Sat. night too and thankfully had great dinners at Casa Ramos and Powell Steamer & Co. Apple Hill Growers I am very DISAPPOINTED in the advertising of a festival that was non-existent. Will my friends go back in the fall? Maybe! or Maybe not after this experience. We've been coming to Apple Hill every Fall since 2012. After spending October weekends there the first two years, we decided to try a weekday (last year) and a September Saturday (this year). Soooooo much more enjoyable when the crowds are lower! I will never return in the insanely crowded season again! Apparently, weekends in October are when the madhouse crowds hit. Our favorite thing to do is U Pick. From our experiences, Sun Mountain has the best tasting and best priced apples for U Pick. Rainbow Orchards has the best donuts, Boa Vista has the best Apple butter. Apple Hill will be on our Fall list for years to come, I'm sure! read more

I LOVE Apple Hill! For those of you not in the 'apple-know', Apple Hill is a foothill community of apple growers, wineries and Christmas tree farms. Located about an hour's drive out of Sacramento, they open in the fall and are a huge local attraction. During peak times, traffic and people can be overwhelming. So be warned...but so worth it! Apple Hill is basically a loop of stops at local growers each with their own attractions. Our loop always includes: High Hill Ranch - trout fishing for the kiddies, lot of crafts, a fudge house, baked goods, apples, bbq'd chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, wine tasting at Madrona; spent many a fall afternoon with our kids here so the memories run deep! Boa Vista Orchards - lots of crafts, baked goods, apples, the BEST hand-dipped corn dogs anywhere! Jack Russel Brewing Co. - always stop in here for a cold brew. Perfect way to leisurely re-hydrate while NOT eating something made of apples! Larsen Apple Barn - On our way out, we pick up a box of apples, a fresh apple pie and caramel apples to go. We couldn't possibly eat anymore since we've grazed our way through the day! read more

Apple Hill is a great day trip for both kids and adults from the Sacramento area. My favorite place to visit is Plubell's Family Orchard, which has all the great apple pies and goodies, as well as a pumpkin patch, good lunch foods, animals you can feed, and a beautiful property overall (go check out their page for my full review). *TIP* there's a FREE shuttle bus that takes you from farm to farm on the weekends in October. It was totally empty when I went on a Sunday, which really surprised me. It has a couple of places you can park your car and pick up the shuttle, which runs every 15 minutes from 10am-5pm and has 2 bus lines (red and green) that take you to different farms. It's a great resource that more people should take advantage of! Parking can be tough at some farms, and it's such a waste to do all that driving when you can take a bus. Apple Hill is absolutely wonderful. It's worth the drive from the Bay Area, especially if you can go on a weekday during September or October. The weekends do get crowded, so be prepared for that. If you can only go on a weekend, best advice is to get up to Apple Hill by 8am when most orchards open. After about 10 or 11 am on a weekend - it's packed. Our favorites are: * Abel's: best pies (frozen! they keep for a while - buy one in October and save it for Thanksgiving) and treats - chocolate/caramel covered marshmellows on a stick??!! Hello! * Boa Vista: awesome apple fritters and donuts, good bbq, and the best corn dog in the world. They also have an amazing selection of jarred goods - mustards, olives, pickles, etc. * High Hill: this is the mother ship of Apple Hill and the most crowded. So get there at 8 am when it opens. Great kettle corn and apple cider. Apple Hill is basically like the Napa/Sonoma of apple orchards. You drive from place to place and sample their wares. It's beautiful up there and a true "autumn" experience. I'm not sure how many of the orchards on Apple Hill (if any?) actually let you pick apples, which is the one thing I really miss from my childhood back east. But the down home, old fashioned farm feeling up there more than makes up for any lack of actual apple picking. It's one of my most favorite places in California and have gone almost every fall for 13 years. read more

Living in California generally means experiencing only two seasons--wet and dry. This pisses off the significant other, who is a native Michigander and likes having "all four seasons." Fortunately, I was able to scrape together a mini-fall last weekend for at least an afternoon. As previous reviews state, this is pretty much a loop of stores, most of which revolve around apple related products. We started out the trek by headed to High Hill. The trees had something resembling traditional fall colors, and we walked around drinking hot apple cider (after eating apple doughnuts). The girlfriend bought an apple pie, which completely disproved her "Californians don't know anything about pie" theory. We then went to the fudge house, and sampled some pretty good fudge. We took a pass on the apple wine and apple milkshakes, but were very tempted. Next, we moved on to Boa Vista Orchards. By this time, we were appled out. But we did grab lunch, and in reality how often do you see a place hand-dipping their corn dogs? The final stop was Abel Apple Orchards. If we were with kids, the corn maze would have been enjoyable. Instead, we did the couples thing and looked at arts and crafts and split a set of three marshmellows dipped in chocolate and caramel. I've got to admit it was pretty cool. The girlfriend would probably lobby for five stars on this one. And since she let me watch all the football I wanted after we got home, maybe I should give it five stars. . read more

I love fall! I know my peeps in L.A. probably don't make it up to Placerville much, but this place is rad. Most stands even had their little rabbit ear t.v.'s playing the Niners game, that was cool. The best part for me was the numerous wineries. Yeah, the wines had a bit of an earthy taste if you ask me, but I ate grapes right off the vines and the owners of these wineries are so cool. There is a couple from Alaska who runs the Illuminarie Winery, knew nothing about wine when they started and were so cool. We drank wine and ripped on the Palin Clan. Even downtowm Placerville is like stepping out of the Old West. Make it up there if you can. read more

I guess the first thing to note is that this is a region. While there is a concentration of shops and vendors just off Carson Road, you actually have a whole area (between the towns of Placerville and Camino and the surrounding area) to wander through. The sweet smell of the air and the vibrant fall colors make Apple Hill a pleasant place to be on a weekend getaway. Even if you don't stop anywhere, it's a lovely place to drive through. You can almost ignore the crowds and the tight parking. Your patience will be rewarded with Apple wares of all kinds. Food-wise, I would have bought some exotic apples, but most of them are sold in 20lb. lots. Way more than I could use for myself. And the line for an apple fritter? Forget about it. That aside, I really enjoyed my caramel apple sundae from the Fudge Factory (it had a whole apple and the caramel was to die for), and the apple streusel mini pies we took home from Apple Pantry Farm were delicious. I also really liked some of the vendors, especially at High Hill Ranch. I bought some really unique earrings and hair clips from KMB Photography and a very special hand carved wine stopper from Larcade Arts. In both cases, their stuff was really beautiful and definitely high quality. I could have spent more money, but I decided to limit myself to one thing for me and one or two things for holiday gifts. There are lots of things to do for the kids, from pony rides, to face painting, to a hay ride. So you can find something for everyone. I'd never even heard of Apple Hill until a couple weeks ago, but having never been apple picking, decided to give it a try. Apple Hill is awfully cute. There's a wide variety of orchards, wineries, and places where you can sample various local apple products. If you're crafty, there are also various booths where you can buy things. Some of it is a little silly touristy, but if you find the real orchards it's not so bad. From Davis this was a good two-hour drive because of the traffic, and the crowds at the sites, as well as the car lines between the various places, are pretty insane. Yes, the advice to go on a weekday instead is nice, but when I work Monday - Friday not really possible. Just be prepared for the insane crowds and traffic on weekend afternoons. I wouldn't brave the traffic on a regular basis to get to Apple Hill, but it's definitely something fun to do once a year or so if you live around the area. It's the closest we get to an actual autumn in California! read more
