    Using the apple picking tool
    Lexi D.

This was my first time to Apple Hill and our 5th stop on our trip! We went on a Tuesday around 2pm. The parking lot at this spot was a little small but we were able to find parking with no issues. They had a good sized pumpkin patch, though we did not go in it. We enjoyed meeting the dogs and goats. Inside the barn they have a variety of apples to choose from for $2 a pound. You can also pick your own apples for $3 a pound. We did the apple picking, but the available apples were a bit of a walk through the orchards to find. I picked apples for about 30 minutes and spent about $6. This was a much smaller farm/orchard than some of the other stops in Apple Hill.

I really wanted to love this experience but it was pretty basic compared to a lot of others in Apple Hill. I discovered them in the apple hill guide and saw they had cut your own pumpkins, which is exactly what we were after, so we made our way here. The parking and entry are clean and very well manicured. The farm stand produce available looked nice and was well shaded for comfortable shopping. They have a small food stall on site serving a limited menu and it looked nice too. But beyond that, there isn't a lot going on here. The cut your own pumpkins were sadly all cut. They still handed us the shears, but there was really no need for them at all. They provide a wagon you can use to take your pumpkins out but you can't let your kiddos ride on it. We had some very unhappy kids, but with the uneven ground, I see why they have this rule. They price the pumpkins by size and leave it up to their young staff to determine how much each will be. I'm fairly certain ours cost about $25 or more, which is way more than you'd normally spend on one. If the experience were better or they had more to offer I don't think it would sting as much, but there really wasn't much happening to compensate. All in all, it's fine, but there are many better ways to spend your time in Apple Hill in my opinion.

Come for the pumpkin patch, stay for the apples! Or vice versa. We prize in-field picking over value added treats and I decided to take my kids to O'Halloran's because the pumpkins lay in situ in the field. Some are even still on the vine! It makes for fun picking, great teaching, and good photos. I was really pleased to find that prices were low for Apple Hill. In mid-October there were also lots of u-pick apples still available, as well as a great variety in the farm store. Again, prices were reasonable. When we carved the pumpkins we were delighted to find that they were of good quality and the seeds were delicious. This is our new go-to spot! Check out was easy and we got lucky with parking. If you're looking for lunch and entertainment there were several apple ranches with food and music right down the road too.

Covid-19-Update - Heading Into Fall With O'Halloran's https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/o-hallorans-apple-trail-ranch-camino?select=-Cp6sJffoBOIqOj5nE-ZCw&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w SITREP Check out O'Halloran's to get your Pumpkins (now in Septemer) and Christmas Trees (November). https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/o-hallorans-apple-trail-ranch-camino?select=CX-spVDa_rXywEKoZW2AUw&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w THE SETUP I've been coming up here to Apple Hill for the last 30 years, but to O'Halloran's only these last 10 when my fun female gal pals turned me onto to this beautiful spot. I think I've finally gotten the timing down now (though with Covid-19, that could completely upset the "apple cart" - literally - as you will see in a moment). MY PUMPKIN PICKIN' These last few years I've learned that if I want to get the best opportunity to select a "u pick ur own pumpkin", then the last two weekends of September will are going to be your best bet before all the GOOD pumpkins are picked-over and bought. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/o-hallorans-apple-trail-ranch-camino?select=DN1lRy5egHYsqRGWRKZyhg&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w I learned that when I wait until the first weekend of October, that's actually kinda too late since most of the good pumpkins are already picked. I mean, you WILL find some (and I DID) but you have to further off in the field and look hard. So. Learning from that, I actually came up to Apple Hill two weekends ago - Saturday, August 29 - to check out the stops to see how the landscape was for shopping since this is the earliest in the Fall/Winter seasons I've been here to O'Halloran's. THEY WERE CLOSED. So obviously too early in the year for O'Halloran's. [Abel's was also closed, but Boa Vista was OPEN and I got some great produce from them, which I promptly finished off in the 2 week interim]. YOUR BEST PUMPKIN PICKIN' OPPS This last Saturday - September 12 - there was hardly anyone here. But all the pumpkins were out and ready for pickin' (although all the pumpkins weren't finished maturing - in fact, I picked a green one, just cause). https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/o-hallorans-apple-trail-ranch-camino?select=bVLyMYFMg_rlplK9AcsPHw&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w So I imagine that these next two weekends - September 19-21 and 26-27 - would be the best opportunity to pick pumpkins and avoid crowds. That first week of October 3-4 is when the dam will break and the crowds will descend and just increase throughout all of October. CHRISTMAS TREES! Stay tuned til November! FRUIT! Grab their 1/2 Peck sized bag for $7 or the 1 Peck sized bag for $13, and fill it up with an array of different varietals of apples and pears! These fruit bins are open now until the end of December. Have at it! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/o-hallorans-apple-trail-ranch-camino?select=jV9HuJJ_LCLWjP3axHXGvA&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w THE LOWDOWN Git to it! Best Pumpkin Pickin is in the next two weeks! :D https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/o-hallorans-apple-trail-ranch-camino?select_video=ilXrdD9EGfM_5c9a2Vpzrg

We stopped by and saw they have both upick apples and pumpkin. There isn't much additional activities other than a small goat farm but it is smaller farm so not as many visitors here. The staff were friendly and provided information when asked.

This was one of my favorite places in Apple Hill because it was not nearly as crowded as all the other ranches/orchards in the area. This is the perfect place to shop for apples and U-Pick pumpkins. They offer a wide variety of apples - it's almost hard to choose what you want to bring home. They offer a small bag, large bag, or a box (half a bushel) and you're able to mix and match apples as well. The pumpkin patch offers great views. They offer wagons so you don't have to worry about lugging around heavy pumpkins.

    My two pumpkins.

We come every year, especially for the special El Dorado pears (early/mid October?); they are worth the trip.

Went back again this year. $60 for trees. Any size. Still a really good selection. Found a good tree in about 30 minutes.

It is a simpler, smaller, compact farmers market compared to Sacramento Downtown or Midtown. It had a nice variety of vendors. The Saturday I dropped by, they were selling produce, frozen fish, flowers, plants, nuts, baked goods, breads, kettle corn, artisan soap, honey, and jewelry. Some of the vendors were... Thao Ranch of Galt, CA: This small family run farm sells fresh produce. Some of the offerings were fresh dill, sweet snap peas, carrots, red onions, squash, leeks, beets, chard... some other items I can not remember off hand. The produce looked all so beautiful and were vibrantly colored. The carrots, beets, and onions still had their green tops on. Fresh. Plus they sold flowers. Beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers $12-15. Huge full gorgeous bouquets. Professional looking. Grateful Bread of Fair Oaks, CA: I was ecstatic to see their booth. I use to live near the bakery (an actual bakery where they made the goods right in the shop). I would drive or bike on over, my faves were the muesli bread and olive n feta cheese loaf. They have some of the best bread I have ever eaten... mmm. They were selling baguette (sourdough and French), cinnamon raisin bread, jalapeño n cheese bread, muesli bread, slider rolls, dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, banana nut loaf, burger buns, ciabatta rolls, cookies (chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin) and a bunch more. These are all fresh made and not chuck full of preservatives like store shelf bread. I bought a bag of a dozen slider buns $5. Chick's Kettle Corn: Good stuff. Fresh made kettle corn straight from the kettle. He makes it earlier in the day and bags it. I bought a small bag $6. Nature's Nuts: The owner sources the nuts from Ripon and Modesto farms. I spoke to him for a bit. He is quite engaging and quite knowledgeable about nuts (nutritional value, storage, flavoring). No BSing. He sold walnuts, almonds, and pistachios in the shell sold unflavored or flavored. I bought a bag of 8 oz honey smoked almonds. Yum! I was able to sample. The walnuts were so fresh and had an excellent sweet earthy taste. Pat's Pastries: Home based business selling baked goods. Irish soda bread, whole grain bread, chive n cheese biscuits, zucchini pineapple bread, pumpkin ginger bread, gluten free pound cake and zucchini bread... were just some of her offerings. Malik Brothers: They sell various flavors of papadum, chips, rotis, and naan. Each come in a variety of flavors. Roti is a flatbread, made from stoneground whole wheat, originating from India. Ruby's Ranch: They are a farmstead selling all organic produce. Their booth sold a variety of lettuce. It looked all so fresh and vibrant. SUMMARY Visited here per recommendation from our hotel as we were visiting for our wedding anniversary. We went to get something small to eat and dropped by Chimayo's. Afterwards we visited the farmer's market and picked up two desserts. VENUE As mentioned, the market is small but they had about everything that a larger one would have too. Fresh veggies and fruit, crafts, ice cream, pies, and food. We dropped by one place called "Tahoe Pan Ice Cream" which is one of those places that serve poured cream and "scraped" ice cream in a cup. You might've seen this on travelogues on Youtube (popular in SE Asia) and yes, that's the style of scraped ice cream I'm talking about. It was quite good and in a shareable portion size just right for us. There was another shop we dropped by that sold homemade pies. We struck up a conversation with the owners who were long time residents of SLT. They were a nice couple, so we bought their one and only remaining Key Lime Pie. Sorry no pics because we gobbled that delicious pie like nobody's business that same night :) Overall if you're in the area during the summer, it's definitely a good stop if you're NOT looking for large crowds and away from the NLT "scene" near the casinos.

As someone who visits farmers' markets often when traveling and frequents my local market in Carson City, I am always looking for great new markets to check out. Ski Run Farmers Market was great, but I would describe it as more of a craft fair than a farmers' market. I forgot to snap photos, but the setup they have works well. It's set up as two long strips of vendors on either side of the street. I like the setup, and it allowed for smooth foot traffic. While there are a few farm stands from CA and a handful of food vendors, the bulk of this market is artisan crafts, jewelry, and clothing. This is something to keep in mind if you're visiting this market and expecting a huge selection of fresh food. The vibes here were still great, with two live music booths and great Tahoe weather. All of the vendors I interacted with were super friendly. Worth checking out if you are in South Lake Tahoe on a Wednesday night!
