Don't always believe Yelp reviews--especially coming from a Yelp Elite--so let's set the record straight! First off, just a quick note for anyone looking: this restaurant is not halal. Aside from that, we had a fantastic experience here at Friedmans Herald Square near Penn Station. They were playing Hilary Duff music, which was such a fun touch since they often match the vibe of whatever is happening at MSG! They even had special Hilary Duff mocktails. The atmosphere is super sweet and cozy. The restaurant was empty when we first walked in, but the second we sat down, it completely packed up! The waiter was very friendly, and even though they weren't able to split the check at the table, they did provide an itemized receipt to make figuring it out easy. The food was great overall--the Mac & Cheese bites and the corn were especially good! We also tried the cheesecake and molten cake. Plus, the neighbors sitting next to us were so sweet. Came on a busy Thursday morning at nine am. Got a decaf iced vanilla latte and a nova Benny and the Mac and cheese. And lemme just say the food came out sooo quick. The Benedict was so delicious. I've never had it on a crispy hash brown type before. It was good and a massive portion. Mac and cheese was alright, though I would probably opt out of it next time. Had reservations for 2 on a Saturday afternoon and the place was packed. We got there about three minutes late, but they seated us within 5 minutes in a booth. It was our first time eating at a Friedman's location. It had a nice diner feel to it, with a mix of booths and tables. The brunch menu has a variety of breakfast items, salads, sandwiches and burgers, starters, and entrees (fish tacos, grain bowl, fried chicken). I like that several of the items are naturally gluten free, and some can be made gluten free by request. We decided to go with three breakfast items from the brunch menu: I got the shakshuka, my sister got the Nova Benny, and we got the lemon ricotta pancakes to share. All 3 dishes were great. The shashuka came with grilled ciabatta, perfect for dipping into the sunny side eggs and tomato sauce. My sister loved that the poached eggs and smoked salmon of the Nova Benny came on top of a crispy potato latke. The pancakes were fluffy and the lemon ricotta and lemon zest elevated their flavor. Our server was friendly and attentive, and he asked us if we had any allergies when he took our order. He came by several times to check on us and refill water. Greek salad with added on steak is outstanding. Generous portion with fresh ingredients and lots of flavor. The added steak is good quality and cooked to order. I got the pan-seared fish sandwich with gluten free bread. So good. I had trouble figuring out the dipping sauces I liked. They don't have barbecue sauce so I tried the honey mustard and the herbed aioli. So-so but not quite right. (The next day I went to the singing Friedmans at Times Square and tried the garlic aioli. We were able to snag a booth for two on a Saturday at lunch with under a 5 mins wait. The place is super inviting with spacious windows and high ceilings and plants which make it feel airy while the wood made it warm and natural. The booth was comfortable. Our server was outstanding. She was funny, attentive, and very helpful. They're easily able to accommodate gluten free (my friend has a severe gluten allergy). I had the corned beef sandwich and it was the best corned beef I've had. Tender, juicy, and flavorful. This would be on my regular rotation if I lived here. read more

The drink was eh. Only because I am NOT a fan of bubbly/ spritz. I tasted zero alcohol and it felt like I was paying $14 for juice. The sandwich was standard but they did an excellent job with the good cuts of bacon. I rated this four stars because I paid $41 for a sandwich and drink during brunch. This is kind of just your regular brunch place, nothing too special, but it's a solid spot. I get the feeling it won't let you down too badly. We had a huge reservation for my whole family, and they were able to accommodate us in the back room on a long long table. Didn't wait long at all, and the waitstaff was very friendly! I ordered the two eggs with style (with bacon), and what you see is what I got. I liked the crunch on the hash browns, and the strawberry butter was a really great surprise! I did see that other people were able to get different types of bread with their meal -- maybe that's slightly on me for not asking, but I just wish they would have put the bread choices somewhere on the menu instead of literally saying in the dish description that it came with whole wheat toast. This was my second time at Friedman's and definitely will not be my last! Right when we walked in, we were greeted by the wonderful staff. We started off with drinks and then got the Vegetable Potstickers. They were delicious and crispy, but the sauces paired perfectly with them too. I had the chicken fingers for my entree. They were so crispy and delicious and you couldn't even tell they were gluten free! Decided upon Friedman's due to menu, proximity to my destination, and reviews. I'm glad that we did, as my daughter and I had a great experience to start off our day. We didn't see the option to place a reservation, but we really didn't need to as the wait went by really quickly.. probably about 5 mins actually. I like the space.. it is open, minimalistic, yet aesthetically pleasing. Open area, you're definitely not on top of one another. Very clean. I don't usually like booths, but this one didn't make me anxious. Will was our server, and he was pleasant and very accommodating. The soundtrack held a while variety, which I appreciated. My daughter ordered a hot chocolate, lemon ricotta pancakes, and a side of sunny side up eggs. She said the pancakes were amazing. The chicken was perfectly fried, crispy, moist, and seasoned just right. The waffle had a nice texture: soft with a little crunch. The cheddar was mild and didn't overpower the waffle. Overall, a solid combo. The B.E.L.T. hit the spot. The bread was toasted just right, and the bacon was high quality. I swapped the sunny side up egg for scrambled, and it still worked great. The potato hash was fried nicely, could've used a bit more salt, but nothing a little ketchup couldn't fix. Our server mentioned the $10 mimosas, so of course, we had to try them. They were just ok, with extremely small portions. I also would have preferred other juice options for the mimosa besides orange juice. Two breakfast entrees were the perfect amount of food for me and my two friends. I thought the French Toast was delicious and was loaded with fresh fruit, which I enjoyed. I thought the breakfast platter with bacon, eggs, hash, and bread was good overall, however the potatoes were not as advertised. It made it seem like a hash brown consistency, but the potatoes we got were more lumpy potatoes, more similar to mashed potatoes. I enjoyed Friedmans. We came here looking for gluten free pancakes or waffles, which Friedmans has, but unfortunately, all waffles had cheese and all pancakes either had custard or some heavy cream. I was a bit disappointed, but their friend chicken sandwich was pretty good. The bun wasn't the softest, but overall the bun held together for the most part. The fries were also good. The fried chicken that came with the waffle was pretty good and my boyfriend enjoyed his waffle. We also got the banana bread, which was okay. Great food for the whole family with an upscale flair. The decor was interesting with simple jarred veggies along the walls. The service was good and the food came pretty quickly. There is no kids menu but there was plenty to choose from. My son had Mac and cheese bites from the app menu, for example. One thing to just know is that the restrooms are not gender specific. There's one restroom with several stalls for all patrons. This in theory doesn't bother us, we're accepting of whatever you want to do or whoever you are. Friedman's was a lucky find on my Yelp feed when it was freezing cold and raining in New York. They came through with some delicious warm matzo ball soup and pastrami sandwiches on rye that absolutely hit the spot. The entire group was super happy. Even though it was crowded service was attentive, and the server was super friendly. She also brought a special piece of cake out for my daughter's birthday, which everyone also really liked. The inside is classic diner, and it is a bit upscale as well, which made for a pleasant dining experience. It being in New York, there's not anywhere to park without paying so it's probably better to walk here or take the subway. Overall, five stars and would visit again. read more
