Amazing meal at Applebee's Grill. We have been to the Borough Market several times but never for dinner. We decided to go on a Monday night. We enjoyed the scallop appetizer and 6 oysters, which were on a happy hour special (2£ instead of 4£). The oysters were phenomenal--large, meaty and flavorful. For entree we enjoyed the sea bass fish of the day. It was delicious and served with a Bouillabaisse like sauce. We chose new potatoes and broccolini for sides. Came for the £1 oyster special and they were honestly the best oysters I've had in a long time. We also ordered the sourdough which was good. The staff was very friendly. The restaurant was quiet and not too busy. The manager greeted us when we got there and checked on us throughout. I would definitely come back. read more

Applebee's Fish at the Borough Market is where we went for our Fish and Chips during our brief stop in London. It was a Saturday so crazy at the Market, but this restaurant is on the perimeter so easier to get in and out of. I had their Bloody Mary (spicy) which was delicious. I also had the Fish and Chips (of course) but added the mushy peas to complete the classic. The fish was large but crispy and tasty! Chips were plentiful and the mushy peas were....well, mushy peas BUT I can say I tried it. Applebees in America is better than the over cooked, bland dishes you'll be served here. The service is questionable. The crab pasta had several bits of shells and left an undesirable after taste in your mouth. The mussels with ginger curry broth were lackluster in pretty much anything flavor related. The XL king prawns are over-cooked, yet raw in the middle. The monkfish was so overcooked it ate like rubber. Honestly, the best part of the meal was the bread plate with olive tapenade and chive butter, literally the only saving grace. Skip this joint. Honestly a waste of 200£. read more

Having gone to London for decades we always stop at the market to see what is new. This time for lunch we stopped at Applebee's Fish for a change. It was worth it. It had great fish of all types. From raw fresh clams and crab, to pies and grilled fish. Naturally I had to have a fish & chips lunch. It is a favorite. And nothing makes it if you are not in the UK. This was perfect. It was fresh and cooked and tasty. It was as you would expect when you had it here. The chips were fresh as well. They were made right in front of you. This was not made earlier and then handed out. You could see them drop it in the pot and cook the chips as you would expect. Whent it was brought to the table they brought out some Malt Vinegar. The right compliment to the meal. And just what you would want. All the dishes were great. the team was excellent. They helped you. Answered questions. Made it easy to settle in and have what you might expect. I even had a cocktail of a Pimms Cup. This is a traditional UK cocktail you cannot find in many places unless you are in a fancy bar in NYC. They are very traditional. It is a great drink to have with the fish & chips. The next time I had this was a few days later on the Queen Mary II as it sailed from the UK and back to NYC. There was a pretty long line to this place, so expect to be waiting for a while to get your food. I didn't expect to see such a small cart serving so many people. I decided to get the Garlic Prawn Wrap when I came. Garlic Prawn Wrap- The prawns were beautiful. They were tender and flavored nicely with a little seasoning. The fish was tender as well. The only thing that I wasn't a fan of was the wrap. It tasted like it was bought from a supermarket, and didn't make it taste better. However, the seafood all tasted fresh and delicious. Our feet were tired from a whole day of walking so we opted to eat in the restaurant. Since we didn't have a reservation, the only available seats were at the counter, which turned out to be the perfect spot to watch the chefs in action. TIGER PRAWN TEMPURA: It was not the typical Japanese tempura which breading is made with panko. This breading is more like a "fish and chips" type of batter, which was light and crispy. The tiger prawns were large, and they were indeed prawns, not shrimps. They had a divine seafood sweetness that was so rich that they tasted almost like lobster. What made this dish rock was the fresh house-made wasabi mayo that gave the prawns an extra kick in flavor but not overwhelming their natural sweetness. FISH AND CHIPS: When you are in the Borough Market in London, you know you can't go wrong with fish and chips. The fish filet was freshly carved - as with everything else in the market, you won't find those frozen stuff out of a box. The batter was light and crispy; the fish was moist and juicy. Top class restaurant in Borough Market specialising in seafood dishes. To be honest we only went here because the very popular seafood bar, a few doors along, was jam packed. Saying that I'd definitely come back here as a first choice.  The chefs are clearly passionate about food and put in a lot of effort to not only make the food tasty but also visually stunning. Found this place by accident. We were headed to another place in Borough Market, but it was overbooked so we wandered around until we stumbled about Applebee's. Glad that we did. They were very accommodating and got us a couple of tables together after a brief wait. Everyone enjoyed their food and deserts. Started with the sourdough bread and dip then had the fish and chips with mashed peas. It was a huge piece of fish BTW. And topped off the meal with an some sort of apple crumb desert with cinnamon ice cream. Service was great and prices were spot on for what we received. Don't expect anything even remotely similar to the American casual dining chain of a similar name. Expect fresh seafood in a slightly classier environment, with a price to match. Got there on a Friday for dinner, early in the evening, and it was pretty packed. We managed to get the last two free seats at tables, though. The service was courteous and speedy. The mixed grilled fish platter house specialty with a chips or a rocket salad, which turned out rather fresh. The fish of the day was dover, which came grilled, with nice char marks. There was also a whole shrimp. Apparently this dish changes on the daily, though, so don't expect the same thing! Sea food salad came with mussels, squid, prawns, and scallops, as well as some greens and a citrusy dressing. Everything was fresh and flavorful, if a bit skimpy on the portions. Overall, wonderful quality. All of the fish were juicy. The produce was fresh. The proximity to Borough Market and the London Bridge station is such a bonus! read more

Arguably my favorite meal when visiting London. Right next to the historic Borough Market (which they do not get their fish from, according to our waitress), this restaurant has a great environment and even better food. The sea bass filet was cooked to perfection and served on top of a great mash with a perfectly paired sauce. Americans, this is not the Applebee's chain you know from home. (Otherwise known as Chili's only cheaper and worse.) This is a nicely decorated middle priced upscale fish restaurant near Borough Market. (London fish restaurants can go VERY upscale with prices you can only afford if you are a soccer star or Russian oil tycoon.) It typifies the positive stereotypes of British cooking. In British talk - this is good ingredients -simply and well prepared. In American talk - this is comfort food. No, not the hideous American chain Applebee's (as Jade V. says in her review below)..... but a quaint, lovely, delicious cafe/restaurant in Borough Market. Was lucky enough to get a table outside on a warm Spring evening. At first I was suspicious as so many other restaurants were packed, but this one wasn't. In retrospect it was merely good timing. The scallop starter with celeriac mousse and green apple salad is to die for. A crisp mix of flavours, well suited to a balmy day outside. Interestingly similar to Jade V., I also had the seasonal mixed grilled fish platter, which is pretty much what is available that day (see photo I've uploaded). It was simply very fresh and perfectly cooked and served. It didn't need loads of flavouring, and the cooking of the simple fish taste from each type was allowed to come through on its own merits. I was surprised by the ample portion size, and was quite full by the end. Staff were friendly and efficient, despite the fact they were rapidly quite busy. I was only let down by the wine. I ordered a Viognier to start, which at £28 for the bottle tasted more like a £7.99 no-name bottle from the corner shop. I then ordered a carafe of Sauvignon Blanc which was merely ok. Other than that, if you like your fish it's definitely a place to check out. read more

I suspected Applebee's might be disappointing, and unfortunately it fulfilled my expectations. I'd actually previously had their prawn wrap at lunchtime which I thought would be incredible but was in fact quite bland and used iceberg lettuce to which I have a particular aversion. So I was a little nervous when we picked this place for my post graduation dinner (yep, no pressure). It's a pricey menu and as it specialises in fish I would expect the fish dishes to be outstanding. I ordered monkfish which is probably my favourite fish and I think it's pretty hard not to make monkfish taste delicious - it naturally has a sweet rich flavour which does most of the work itself. This dish came paired with lobster, crab and I think prawn - basically all the seafood I love, but it really was not the sum of its parts. The fish was a little tough/overcooked and the bisque it came in insipid. Sad. I did better for my godmother, who I recommended tried the skate. This was actually very well cooked and tasty, although she found the copious amount of capers involved a little overwhelming. My dad had his favourite, dover sole, and again wasn't loving it. I did really enjoy the roasted new potatoes, I was starving and hoovered up a bowl in about 2 minutes. I wouldn't return here, it's too risky when you're spending a fair whack of money to end up with mediocre food. read more

I was looking for a sit down restaurant in borough market and happened upon Applebee's. Since I hadn't had a proper fish and chips since being here in London, I decided to try this place. As an added bonus, it was served with mushy peas- not my favorite side dish, but definitely traditional and felt authentic.... haha. It was not a disappointing dish. The crust was crispy and the fish was perfectly cooked. The fries were good. The fish was served on top of the fries, so as I ate- the fries got soggy. That said, I don't know that I have had fish and chips served any other way. I also had the bread with anchovy butter because, well, anchovy butter. It was good - way too much for one person, so didn't need to order it, but it was nice to try. The mussels and scallops that I tried were quite flavourful. The fries were good and the Courgette fries were a fun eat although slightly under-seasoned. The apple in the apple crumble could've cooked a little more. The blueberry pannacotta was good but probably could've done with a tad less gelatine. The white wines were all quite fruity unless there were more savoury tones in the more expensive bottles which we didn't try. Ambience was cheerful and the place was quite packed, but then again it was a Friday night. The waiters were cheerful and helpful. Good experience overall. First off, this is a review of the hot seafood wraps on the stand outside at lunch, not the fish shop itself. While the fish looks fresh and they have quite a variety, I source mine direct from Billingsgate so I've never tried it out. However, if the quality of the fish is anything like the quality of the wrap, then I might have to give it a go anyways. So the stand outside offers a massive selection of...2 items. Yep, just two and of course they are seafood related. You can pick a) garlic prawns or b) Cajun fish and garlic prawns. I personally recommend option b) as the Cajun seasoning on the fish is fantastic with robust hearty flavours somewhat reminiscent of the US South and a bit of zing to keep you interested. I admit, I've passed by this place numerous times and never opted for it out of a fear that the fish may be the leavings of the day or week before. However, the smell was so enticing I just had to give it a go today. From talking with the cook, I learned that he selects the fish from the fresh stock each day depending on what stock levels are like, expected demand, and how he feels that morning. In my wrap there was a mix of salmon, cod, and haddock which provided a nice balance of flavour and substance. The fish is freshly grilled in front of you so no worries about it sitting there stewing all day (and the grilling is healthier than frying!) and then placed with crunchy veggies and some sauces in a warmed tortilla. All this happens while you wait so you know you are getting as fresh a wrap as possible. The sauces were a mild tomato based chilli sauce and a rich creamy white sauce with a hint of tartare. They went well although I would prefer more spice but then again I eat chilli sauce out of the bottle sometimes so I'm probably not the average spice junkie. Overall, for a fiver I'd hope for a bit more food to fill me up but the freshness and flavours were excellent. The price is on par for Borough and I'm definitely keeping it in mind as a lighter lunch option for the Market. read more

Eating good in someone posher's neighbourhood. As others have pointed out, this Borough establishment has no connection with the US strip-mall chain. In fact, name aside, they've virtually nothing in common at all: No matter how hard you protest, you won't be able to get an overfilled plate of reheated food for $11 and take half of it home to rot in your fridge. What you will get is a good selection of fresh seafood, simply but perfectly cooked. Now, I freely admit I'm not an a-fish-onado, so the delicacy of the Scottish sea trout main was somewhat wasted on me. But I really enjoyed both the scallop starter and cheesecake dessert. Probably liked the appetizers a bit better than the mains so would likely at least once go in and choose just 2-3 apps as my meal (you have to try the scallop app, WOW) and they have a decently priced wine list. Only downside and the reason why it misses on the elusive 5th star, is the service, at least when we were there on a busy, but busy SATURDAY night, the service was slow and poor, poor and slow. It wasn't the worst experience with service I've ever had at a restaurant here in London but when you wait a 1/2 hour just to be able to order drinks? no no no. It pains me to write this review. I have enjoyed this restaurant many times and visited it each time I was in London and recommended it to friends frequently. But a few hours following my last meal there, I became violently ill. I ended up in bed for over a week, ruining my entire trip to London. After returning to the U.S., I needed to see my GP and was prescribed antibiotics. Now imagine being at the heart of Borough Market and walking past a stand, displaying fresh fishes, clams, squids and prawns. It is called the applebee's fish café. Not often used to such a sight in London - I have to stand there and watch. I start to compare prices and unfortunately Borough markets prices have gone up since it got such a tourist attraction. Spying to the back I discover there is a fish bar behind the display. People coming and going enjoying a small meal. Now if you are a Londoner you might think twice, if you shall buy a sea bass from the fishmonger to cook at home or if you might have a taste of it in the back of the bar? As a visitor you normally get a little bit frustrated by the wealth of food, while not being able to buy any fresh food as living in a hotel. Unfortunately when we finally finished out Borough market hopping Applebee's closed the restaurant for two hours late afternoon. However, it not took us long to find this place again one evening the next week. It was a casual atmosphere sitting on high chairs and a little table having ordered starter such as the scallops with crispy bacon- excellent, prawns with peaches, rocket & chilli dressing (hard work as you have to peel them yourself) and grilled fillet of Mackerel with crispy vegetables & sesame seed dressing - tasty! The 3 of us shared the fish platter of the day, the portion was more then generous. As I do am a fish gourmet it was a shame that particular the fish was a bit too much cooked through and makes the meat taste a little bit dry. I recommend sticking to the main menus; the fishmongers and waiters take special wishes on board, a flexibility, which needs to be appreciated. Applebees is a very nice and therefore very expensive fishmonger located at Borough Market. I shop here occasionally and am always surprised at the high, high costs. They sell great product but I have found equally fresh fish elsewhere for much less. All the guys working behind the ice filled fish displays are extremely nice and knowledgeable about the fish they sell.
