What Americans think: a stroll down memory lane of subpar burgers and poorly made chicken entrees but deliciously greasy appetizers from high school pep rallies and sports games. I gotta admit, it's a step up. I love seafood, better than that, I love FRESH seafood (I used to live in a landlocked area, it was not pretty). What better way to see what you're eating when you walk by earlier and their plethora of fish just sit there on ice, waiting to be taken like those puppies in the window. I took my mum, who is a big seafood fan like me, to this joint, and we weren't disappointed. She had the different filets of fish, and I had the bass with lobster sauce. However, as the Americanness in us hasn't rubbed off, we like starch with our plates. Sides. Sorry, we do. Prices were what you can expect, but I think it would have been nice to have added in a vegetable or two to the place. We literally ate fish, no chips, no baked potato (I guess that really is American)...zip, zilch, nada. So I will say this, if you're a seafood fanatic who loves dishes that showcase the seafood at its finest. Definitely go here. Food is fantastic, it might be leaving you for some more. I had to walk down to the nearest Tesco's or Sainsbury's wanting to nibble on a carrot or a bag of crisps...but we have all been there. :) read more

Ho hum.... The smoked mackerel mouse is OK, but not spectacular it would be improved by a little chilli and the pickled red onion would probably be better replaced by a wedge of lemon. The monkfish was plentiful but cooked a little too aggressively in contrast to the accompanying chorizo which wasn't cooked enough, Their creme brûlée is lacklustre, a little too thick with the thinnest crust of caramelised sugar. The cheesecake nice, but formulaic. The chips however are very good. On a scale of chip-shop to J.Sheekey the interior is definitely chip shop and that's the problem really. It's a cafe, rather than a restaurant. The food is alright, but by no means special and at £120 for a meal for two with a couple of glasses of wine, it really should be a lot better. Honestly, next time, I'd walk through the market to Fish! It's a lot cheaper, the food is better, the interior is more open and honest and it doesn't have a lingering trace of the aroma of fishmonger. read more

A gorgeous selection of fresh fish, to be sure. I won't have the option to do any proper cooking while in London, but if i did i'd come here for the protein! My real non-browsing experience here was to get a wrap from the line in front. Deliciously filled with slaw and garlic shrimp, this was the kind of street food i live for. Being able to walk and tour the market while I ate was simply the best way to spend a gorgeous Friday afternoon. Just one ingredient of an experience that is sure to be a highlight of my time in London. I think a real bonus for American tourists is the name! i definitely got a kick out of this place sharing a name with the quintessential awful, overly processed, soulless American chain. we had dinner here recently and it was very nice and reasonable prices. We sat at the counter where we could see the chefs at work . We didnt stare but they are some cute guys working the kitchen 'Yes chef' Its more than a cafe. The food we had was all fish dishes and all came out steaming hot and well cooked. I had a fish soup with pieces of fish through it and bread on the side. A main with a fish I cant remember on a bed of lentils and spinach. So deliciously good and filling. Mains are under £10 and fish is the menu. Wine list is good and a little pricey. We had big beautiful glass of Shiraz but it was cold instead of room temperature, apparently it had been in the cellar . We still had another glass though. Nice place. read more

I love this place! Had some of the best fish dishes ever here. It's more of a cafe than a fine dining restaurant but the fish is fresh, simple and well prepared. The wine list is pretty good, and the desserts are delicious. They also have a fishmonger attached as they are in Borough Market, and they will happily cook you any fish they have for sale at the market price on the day. Catches include all the usual scaly and crustacean requisites- snapper, halibut, mussels, lobster, prawns- plus marinades , condiments and everything you need to prepare a fish supper. The restaurant itself is attractive and has a good atmosphere. Light and airy, it was the perfect location for a late lunch on a muggy day in early summer. The food? I don't know. It was ok. I had the haddock and chips, and while the chips were pretty tasty, the fish was rather bland. There were a couple of other things I didn't like. I asked for some mayonnaise and was directed to use my boyfriend's (who had three dips come as part of his meal) - when I asked for my own, I received rather a small portion and then had to get more 2/3 through the meal. There was also cucumber in the tap water, which I know is rather vogue but I absolutely hate it. My boyfriend was delighted with his trio of fish, though, particularly the swordfish, which was a new experience for him. Less impressed that the three sauces it came with were actually just mayonnaise, pesto and sweet chilli sauce (none of which were obviously freshly made). I think overall I'd go back if I was with somebody who wanted to go, but considering that it's on the pricey side, it wouldn't be something I'd recommend. read more

Great fish shop with a small stand out front that sells fish and shrimp wraps. Didn't get a chance to stop inside for a proper meal, but the wrap that a friend of mine shared was prepared on the spot by two friendly blokes who knew what they were doing - everything was cooked perfectly in front of us as soon as we ordered. I'd stand a bit farther from the grill if possible while waiting (smelling like garlic is great if you don't want vampires around though)! read more

Oh I do like Applebee's very much. I've never eaten in the restaurant, but every so often I wind up in the queue for their wraps at lunchtime. It's not the fastest moving queue, but you get very tasty food at the end. They do two different wraps - one cajun fish, one with garlic prawns - you watch as the cute man makes it up, and then you're a fiver poorer and you've bagged yourself a tasty and healthy lunch. The wraps are filling, but you won't end up in a carb coma for the rest of the day. Always secretly disappointed about that, I actually like carb comas. If you're in the area at lunch and you've always wondered why there's a long queue at this place, go do the British thing and join it. It's one of the very best queues in South London. read more

I really really like Applebees, it has to be one of the best, affordable fish restaurants in London... Its small and during the day is a fishmongers, which is always a good sign when its a fish restaurant. The lady who oversees the operation is fab she always has a joke and can recommend the best things on the menu. My single favourite is the squid with aubergines to start (they even made a starter of this into a main course for me once that was AMAZING). We tend to choose a bar seat which overlooks the chefs working away which is really interesting and allows you to see how much hard work and dedication that goes into making the food there. For around £80 you can get 2 starters 2 mains and a bottle of Prosecco/wine which is quite fair for the quality of food you get and the amazing juxtaposition of flavours. Scallops with sweet potato and bacon lardons is an amazing combination which I would have never had thought of. If you book more than 24 hours in advance for a saturday night, you get a huge 25% off the bill!! read more

I'm a bull rider visiting London for a rodeo exposition. I am a big fan of Applebees in my hometown of Bloomington, Indiana, so imagine my excitement to get to where it all began. The plan was to get out of the chaps and spurs at the hotel before hitting the town, but I couldn't wait. Turns out - i had nothing to worry about! Plenty of other patrons had chaps on too so I was right at home. Some also had police hats and horsewhips - I guess they were mounted police. This was just as warm and neighborly as my Applebees back in Indiana, but the menu is VERY different. I ordered my typical Apple-Tini-Teaser™ but unfortunately they didn't have that here. Instead, I got a Pimms-Peppa-Pleasah™. Service was excellent - they could tell i require food that could be eaten with my hands and recommended a garlic prawn wrap. For us Americans, a prawn is like the buffalo of shrimp. That's how my waiter, Travis, explained it to me. One note - spicy food and chaps don't mix. I was 4 bites into my wonderful wrap before my giblets were accidentally immersed in horseradish. Travis, my handsome waiter, pointed me to the restroom where i could baste my burning baubles and wash out my chaps. Well, the water was hot but it got the job done with minimal scalding. As patrons pretend to ignore me squatting over the sink like a sumo wrestler squaring off, I realize there are no hand towels to dry up. Instead, I would need to use the dreaded hand dryer. Everybody knows Applebees' hand dryers run HOT- so I was worried. Not here though. Applebees London is all about freshness and class. Instead, they have one of those Dyson hand dryers that harnesses the power of tornado to jet your hands dry. Any port in a storm, I always say. With a swift dunk, I would immediately realize this was no port, but rather the eye of a hurricane and my bits were suddenly ensnared in Dyson's diabolical flesh tempest of torment from which no grapes escape unwrung. Like Chinese finger cuffs, struggle only pulls you deeper into Dyson's depraved lure. As the unrelenting cyclone stretched and coiled my dumplings into a fleshy pretzel, I began to pass out. Then I remembered advice I received picking apples at an orchard: twist, don't pull. With a gentle twist, I broke free of Dyson's cruel wind. I don't know what he has against bags, but Dyson's deceitful harvest would not include mine. Not today... Sore and blue, once more Travis to the rescue. Such great service at Applebees! He knew what to do immediately, fetching some Greek yogurt and hummus from the kitchen saying with a wink "you're going to need this". I'm sure it happens every day but it made me feel special and welcome. So besides the Prawn Wrap, you should also check out the daily catch because everything is fresh, local and brought in daily. Oysters. Trout. Amazing. I can't wait to come back! And next time I won't fall prey to any of Dyson's duplicitous gambits. read more

A sign of a good fish place is always that it doesn't smell of fish. Sure when you get up close to the fish you get their scent, but the place is cleaned so rigorously every day, that it doesn't have the pungent smell some similar places seem to have. I've only had the takeaway lunch options from here, but their prices have risen sharply in the past year or so, now approximately £2 more than they used to be. They taste really good though, although you're restricted to a choice of two or three wraps each with a different type of fish. read more

Not a big fan....I've had better seafood at other restaurants. I decided to opt out for two appetizers instead of a main entree and my husband had the fish. The crab cakes really weren't all that. I had wonderful experience here. It's in the heart of borough market next to a lovely strip of bars & other restaurants. I visited after going to the top of the Shard building which is a short walk away. It was great to find this place bc it was one of the only few to still be open later in the evening. My friend & I weren't in the mood for a large meal & wanted to save some money. We ordered a salad with bacon, mushrooms, avocado & a nice vinaigrette on top. Next was Cajun sweet potatoes and fried zucchini. Everything was well seasoned and cooked to the perfect temperature and texture. I really enjoyed this meal & strongly suggest it to anyone in the area. The bill was very reasonable & only about £13 each. read more

Delicious fishes My latest trip to Applebee's was my third, and by far the best. On previous visits, although the restaurant hadn't particularly disappointed, it hadn't particularly satisfied either. Through slow improvement, however, Applebee's is now at the top end of the London Bridge restaurants, and certainly several degrees superior to fish!, the alternative down the road. Starters were an inspired combination of a fresh Caesar salad with generous portions of hot smoked salmon and bacon. The salmon is strongly smoked, adding a touch of chilli-spice to the velvet-smooth Caesar sauce, and well complimenting the crisp lettuce shards. The croutons, although perhaps left in the sauce for too long, are joyfully full of herbal flavours, nicely rounding off a beautiful start to the meal. If the starters was a great re-imagining of a classic, the main course linguine was (to me at least) a great new idea. The pasta was combined with muscles, clams, crab meat and porcini mushrooms, for a dish that satisfied and filled in equal proportions. The sautéed spinach ordered on the side was entirely superfluous, but perfect nonetheless. All of which might suggest that their core offering of perfectly cooked fresh fish has taken a back seat. In fact, this couldn't be less true - the grilled sea bass was perfectly cooked, deliciously moist and meaty. Whilst the accompanying chestnut sauce was somewhat lacking in oomph, it gave room for the vegetables to assert their own flavour. Most impressive though was where Applebee's had identified it's prior problems and worked to correct them. The coldness in the air is deftly defeated by cast-iron heaters strategically placed around the restaurant, leaving diners toasty-warm on even the coldest days. The service, whilst still a bit spotty, has gone from inattentive to spirited, adding a sparkle to the whole experience. Entirely recommended. read more

I'm not a Londoner, but my local friend suggested we take in Borough Market this past summer. We were starving after walking from Trafalgar and Applebee's caught our attention. In the States, Applebee's is an awful strip-mall restaurant chain with prepared meals that are reheated. Not so in Borough. Immediately got a table which was no small feat during the workday rush. Attentive and knowledgeable server got us wine and beer but also directed us to the freshest stuff available. Not being especially original, I though this would be a safe place to get some fish and chips. I was right and spent the next two weeks of our vacation around England and Ireland trying to find something that measured up. Nothing came close. My wife and mother-in-law got a grill sampler which features three small fillets. All were tasty, cooked perfect, and not over-seasoned. Nice downpour-inspired find. Would definitely recommend to visitors and to locals. read more

We went here one night as we couldn't get a table for love nor money at Brindisa round the corner (nothing new there). It was a surprising place, the fish dishes were obviously very fresh indeed and the quality was great. The battered fish was a highlight, a lovely light crisp batter. Some of the other dishes didn't quite live up to their price tags, I think they are trading on their location right on the side of the market to a certain degree, but it is still worth a visit if you are a fish fan. read more

Excelent Fish Market- my dads absolute favourite place to go in Borough, the fish is delicious and they cook it right in front of you. the place could do with being bigger, as it is a little rammed and the staff are not that helpful. but the food is really really good, so its worth a visit. Like the Rue Saint-Denis, Borough Market offers something offers something to arouse the most unusual of appetites and once you have finished teasing your senses in the Market you are left with an invidious choice of where to finally satisfy your tastes. Aside from the puddings, Applebee's is all about fish and we chose here for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon. The dining area is compact, enabling you to share your neighbours' conversation, but overall the clean wooden lines offer a good locale for lunch. The food was excellent when kept simple (mackerel fillets, grilled mullet), but they did struggle with adding flavour to more ambitious dishes; an apple and horseradish crusted cod seemed to miss the apple and replaced it with a hint of carbon. For the sides the spinach was water logged, but the chips were divine - salty potato has rarely been better executed. Wine list was well considered and service good. Overall, I'd say avoid the dilemma: be promiscuous and satiate your desires in the multitude of stalls in the Market (including Applebee's wraps). read more

Got this place recommended by a good friend of mine long time ago but last Wednesday I decided was high time I try it out. The place itself is not too pretentious but the atmosphere is quite nice. I really enjoyed the fact that despite being a Fish restaurant it doesn't actually smell of fish. The dishes are incredible and cooked right in front of you and their quality actually live up to the price tags. One thing that I disliked and the main reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is the fact that the staff wasn't as attentive as I would like it to be. But that won't really stop me from returning to Applebee's because as I stated before this place is really amazing. read more

one of the many things you should try at borough market. shrimp wraps! it's basically grilled shrimp with lettuce and sweet chili sauce wrapped in a tortilla but it's mighty tasty. applebees makes it fresh when you order and they give you lots of large succulent shrimp. watch one person grill as the other constructs the wrap. the only con is that there really isn't a place to sit. read more

I have been here a lot - but no more. You'll almost certainly find the food and wine OK, but.... Went today, walking through the Borough Market stopping to look at stalls and getting a cup of hot mulled wine as we made our way to the restaurant - what Borough Market is all about. At the restaurant we went to the table at the back offered by the waiter, with the half empty cups of mulled wine in our hands and slowly as my friend is partly paralysed on one side. When we sat down then the waiter came back and told us we had to leave if we wanted to drink the mulled wine - very matter of fact. I told him that if they forced us to leave then they'd simply loose our business so he got the manager who told us their business is to sell drinks not let people bring them in. No friendliness, no attempt to get a mutually beneficial outcome, just a 'couldn't care less' attitude. His attitude alone made it impossible to stay even if we'd poured the drinks away. As we got up to leave and I told him he'd not only lost our business that day but my business into the future (I work nearby and use it 6+ times a year) he stood next to us, intimidating and making snide comments as my friend struggled to get up and put his coat on. So for the sake of 'policy' and to gratify his ego he looses £50+ today and £600+ in the next year. read more

I went here with my dad and his fiance - they were in town visiting and my dad's colleague recommended Applebee's for the great food (not necessarily the great atmosphere). He was right on point - the atmostphere isn't trendy, modern or posh - just very traditional - almost feels like an upscale pub, but the food was incredible. I had the grilled brill fillet with crushed potato & saffron and mussel sauce. I never had brill before, but it was an excellent fish. My dad's fiance had the grilled whole dover sole with mixed leaves & lemon - it was super fresh as it just had been received that morning - she easily scaled it herself. My dad ended up having the mixed grilled fish platter - safe, but solid choice. For dessert, we had a couple of the chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream orders. The service was great all night - they graciously stored an umbrella for us during our dining and were very attenative. All in all, an excellent restaurant for great food and an average atmosphere - highly recommended for the food! read more
