How do I describe the Applebee's in Morganton, North Carolina? The building itself is acceptable except for the complete lack of comfortable seating. The waitstaff look tired and disinterested in their jobs. When they screw up your meal, you don't send it back to get fixed or remade unless you want them "giving it the extra special care/treatment" or "adding special sauce," as in the kitchen staff or your server doing something nasty to your food, including but not limited to saliva, hair, or in some cases putting extra protein on for a topping. The Applebee's in Morganton today was especially bad. When I arrived with my elderly friend, they refused to seat us in a comfortable location with a booth. Instead, they gave us these chairs that feel like they were designed by the head inquisitor Torquemada from the Spanish Inquisition. You cannot get comfortable in them at all. And they are so narrow that, no matter how heavy or how slim you are, either your butt crack is what you sit on or one butt cheek falls completely off the chair. Then a couple who came in fifteen minutes after us -- we were waiting so long that I was looking at my clock frequently and I am completely sure of the exact time -- received their food approximately twenty minutes ahead of us. One of them ordered steak and the other ordered chicken. You could see the plates clearly when the waitress carried them right past our table. I am not saying that Applebee's is deliberately discriminating, but when I take out my friend who is an eighty-five-year-old service-connected disabled combat veteran and we are made to wait while a couple who arrived after us is served their food before us, it smacks of some serious unfair treatment. Then, on top of everything else, my steak was not well done. We were there for a total of one hour and fifty-eight minutes from the time we walked in until the time we left. How it is possible that you cannot cook a steak well done in that amount of time is beyond me. I mean, knock off ten minutes because within ten minutes she had taken our order and placed it with our drinks. The appetizers came out and they were correct. I mean, it is hard to mess up pretzels and warm beer cheese, but you know this is Applebee's and somehow they still managed to ruin my steak. Well done means there should not be any pink or red or bleeding at all. This thing, when I cut into it, had a definite red slice running through it that covered about two-thirds of the entire steak. So the cook is either incompetent, stupid, or simply unable to read the ticket properly. I do not know which one of the three it is. And the waitress kept offering excuse after excuse. When the manager finally got over to our table, she tried to pressure me into accepting the mistake even though it was obviously not prepared the way I had ordered it. I finally told her, "Ma'am, this item needs to be removed from my bill right now," and she replied, "Okay, you do not have to be so defensive about it. I will take it off," like she was doing me some kind of big favor. She was not doing me a favor -- she was simply confirming what a poorly run operation this has become. Now I am posting this as a review and I am also sending it directly to corporate. That way, maybe they will take the necessary steps to save this restaurant because it used to be worthy of eating at. Nowadays I do not know what has happened to the standards or the priorities, but for goodness' sake they need to hire some capable staff who can actually do the job and actually serve the customers and rebuild the restaurant's reputation. Because right now this location is performing terribly and the experience is completely unacceptable. read more

I give them a 5 star review. I go there often and have gotten to know the staff. I need to recognize the following people at the Morganton NC restaurant for always giving me excellent service. Manager Brooke. Server Alice. Server Beverly. Server and Host Isaiah, and Host Jamal. I can't say enough how much I enjoy going there because of the way they make me feel welcome and always being very prompt on everything. The food always has a variety to choose from at very reasonable prices and I have tried several dishes and all were just delicious. First time in this Applebee's. I was impressed with the menu choices. My girl and I had 2 meals for $25 and they also have 2 meals for $29 (or get 2 for $30) plus adult beverages. Alexandria was our waitress. She brought extra napkins and asked my wife to cut her steak to see if it was appropriately prepared. My shrimp came steaming off the grill. Yum yum The bar area was huge with 8 televisions. This would be a great place to enjoy a beer and watch sports. All the tv in the bar area are turned toward the bar to see the televisions. The night we came they had 8 waiters and waitresses. We were greeted and seated immediately. If we were not just passing through town on a golf trip, I would come back and eat tomorrow. Plenty. My wife and I just had a quick lunch at Applebee's. We were quickly seated and waited upon. My wife had a item from the menu, and I was craving a simple hamburger steak, fries and, maybe a side of cole slaw which was not on the menu. I asked the waitress and she suggested an addition of sauteed onions on the hamburger steak. No hassle to this at all. Our selections were brought to us pretty quickly. I did not ask the price of my off-menu selection, but it was very fairly priced. Amber C. gave us excellent service. We both opted for pasta dishes (chicken Alfredo and the honey chicken tender mac and cheese). The Mac and cheese dish wasn't terrible, but still pretty mediocre and on the bland side. The fettuccini dish though...a HUGE no go. The chicken was noticeably microwaved and completely dry. Some of the broccoli was soft and some was crunchy. The sauce itself was just terrible. It literally just tasted like heavy cream. Zero seasoning. I tried adding salt, pepper, and parmesan but the dish was way too far gone for any sort of help. After not having been to Applebee's for quite a while, we decided to give it another chance today. The food was really good, the service was excellent. All of the issues we had experienced in the past had been fixed. We found that a change in management had brought about a reversal of all that was bad in the past. The atmosphere has always been great and the location is great. If you've experienced problems here in the past, it would appear that they've fixed them. Went back on 1/29/15 and wow just wow is all I can say. We waited for 40 minutes on a Thursday night and at any given time we would count 5 open tables with no one at them. Hostess folks seriously need to be trained. To beat the boot, the appetizer came out 1 minute before our food and it was just chips and salsa. To make matters worse the manager gave someone else (another table) our ticket. Those folks paid our ticket as it was less than their. The manager came over to apologize and said since they paid it and left it "disappeared" out of their system. He claims as default we had to take their ticket. While he did reduce the cost of the other folks bill by $5 we ended up paying it as it cost us $5 less. Not too excited about the customer service, horrible service and less than mediocre food. Just stopped in with my wife and granddaughter after a LONG day on the road. We were seated promptly and our server took our drink and app orders. The app came out and the server said she would be right back with plates. 5 min later, she reappears to take the orders of the table next to us. I ask her about plates and she say "Oh sure". I guess she forgot she was already supposed to be getting plates. Another 5 min goes by and we start eating the app off the platter because they were getting cold. Luckily it was just family. Another 10 minutes go by, and by this time we have pretty much finished up the app. She shows up with the plates. A few minutes later our meals come out and the steak I had ordered medium was past well done. I was too tired and hungry to send it back and wait for another one. I love to eat here when they have specials and half off appetizers. But the last couple of times, I've been getting servers who doesn't know the menus at all. Also my food has been coming out slow. I've been twice, hoping that the first time was a fluke. Alas, it wasn't. The food portions were skimpy, the music way too loud and the service was lacking. The second visit was marginally better, but since we were there at 10 pm there wasn't much in the way of competition for the waitresses attention. Still too loud to carry on a conversation, but I'm an old fart and would rather hear my friends than the crappy stuff called music these days. Terrible service. Father's Day, wasn't that busy there at 130p. Asked to be seated outside. Placed at a dirty table that nobody came to clean off. No server for 15 min to even get drink order. Went in to ask for a server, the one assigned to us flat out told the hostess in front of me 'I ain't doing anymore outdoor tables... uh uh!' So as we gracefully were leaving off the patio they came out with a 'what ever' look on their faces. We said we are not staying if you have to yell at a server to do their tables Hostess is a ding bat as well EVERY TIME we go. In total outer space.... I will NOT be going there any more. During the Covid crisis, they really stepped up their game. Even though their soup sometimes needs work for french onion, they really do try. I was seated at the bar after my father had just died, and our server was so sweet to us. He was also the bar tender. The manager always comes to check on us and has really gone above and beyond the call of duty along with their staff. Their handicapped bathroom some times runs out of toilet paper, but that is probably because they are so popular. They could probably save money by bringing plastic menus back after this and wiping them down with bleach or lysol maybe. Still, they are so delicious and know how to treat people so compassionately which is more than I can say about some other big chain businesses.
