Very disappointed. I put in an order to go online. Their selections had bottled water and I was traveling so I needed s couple bottles for my hotel room. Went in to pick up order was met with a female that asked what I was needing and I told her my name and had put in a to go order. The girl took a bag that was hanging on wall and handed it to me and then proceeded to ask for payment. I told her it was prepaid. She said, oh ok, then thank you and was about to leave the take out area. It was obvious the bag didn't include my water so I asked, she looked at ticket and said, oh we don't have bottled water, I said well I paid for it, she said, I can give you a cup of water. I said no I'd like a credit. She went to talk to someone else and came back with cash. I got to my hotel and there was no dressing for my salad, (I checked ticket and it was on there), the chips that came with the spinach dip were stale, and the sour cream for the dip that I paid extra for was also not there, again I checked ticket and it was there and charged extra for. The soup was great but seeing how I couldn't eat my salad and the chips were awful (hard in some areas and chewy in others like old oil was used) my meal was ruined. I will try it again when I'm back in town, but will check the food before leaving since they don't double check anything there. They should have told me 1st thing that they were sorry but they don't have bottled water when I picked up rather than me asking where it was, she was just going to let me walk out the door without my full order when "someone" had to have put order together and had to have notice water was there but no note on bag? I usually head straight to the bar seating area because of the TVs. And I also think the service is a little better there than in the main dining area. Like everyone else in Uvalde, I've probably tried everything on the menu. I can't say that I've ever been impressed w/ the burgers and appetizers, they always taste too salty, as does most of the food served here. The soups and salads are good. And I can definitely say that I've never had a bad steak in here. They are always cooked to order and are flavored well, which really surprises me. We were passing through town this week and had dinner here one night. The food was very good and our waitress was awesome. I had the sirloin with steamed broccoli and garlic green beans. I don't think the health department ever comes to Uvalde. My husband and I used to eat at Applebees on Sundays, at the bar, and watch the games. About a month ago I was disappointed to watched the bartender count the entire cash register and then go right back to serving customers, handling food, and making drinks without ever washing her hands. There were not very many customers at that time and there is running water right there behind the bar. If the employees that are out in plain sight are this lax, what is happening in the kitchen where we can't see? Two weeks later we were there again, against my better judgment, and I ordered my favorite salad on the planet, the Fiesta Chicken Chop Salad. The first bite was gritty (like the lettuce had not been washed). The second bite was gritty. Upon the third gritty bite I discovered a bent and dirty toothpick in my salad. Of course my stomach turned over. I discreetly notified the bartender who instantly took it away, and the manager came out to apologize, asking what I wanted him to do about it. Since I didn't want another one, he took the salad off our bill. And the last time I ordered my other favorite salad, the Oriental Crispy Chicken, it had random pieces of soft corn tortilla in it???? When I informed our waitress she said, "Oh, it's supposed to be like that." No ma'am, I said. I've ordered it a million times. She just looked at me like she expected me to just pick them out. I wanted to know how they got in there. She got the manager, who took the salad away, returning 20 minutes later with a new one, and obviously annoyed with me, so I was honestly scared to eat it when she had that attitude. Everybody else was done eating anyway, so I just left it. I am usually a totally gracious guest, grateful to not be cooking or cleaning up the mess. I'm not picky, wanting substitutions, am patient, and tip well, especially if the service is good. Unfortunately, there is hardly a place you can go in Uvalde that you won't end up with a tummy bug after eating. There are just no cleanliness standards in this town and obviously no one monitoring health and food safety. Ask where they post their inspections before you order. Check the date and reasons for demerits. If they are offended that you ask then they probably have something to hide. If they don't have one, run....leave skid marks!!! Here are your safest bets for food in Uvalde: Sunrise Cafe, BBQ at Evett's, Catfish and the salad bar at Oasis, Italian food at Napolis, Burgers at the Shell station (on w. Main by Stripes), Sandwiches at the Coffee Cup and also that little place down by the fire station on Getty, soup and sandwiches at the Tea Room on the Square, a pretty good steak at Jacks (and they are open for lunch -- but I can't vouch for their kitchen either), bar food in the evenings at The Huddle, wings and burgers at Johnny Gringos (although the service is slow if you are fair-skinned), Hong Kong House and Lins Garden for Chinese, Mexican at Julios, Ofelias, Los Alamos, El Herradero, and probably the best of the Mexican is Vasquez (if you don't mind the owner talking to you the whole time); and the Country Club (if you can afford to be a member). read more

Possibly the worst dining experience I've ever had. After a busy day. Realizing I had not thought to eat, my kids talked me into Applebee's . What a mistake. We had an inexperienced waiter(which was okay, we tried to be patient . )My daughter ordered the chicken tender plate, which came with fries and cold slaw, my son, French fries, mashed potatoes (yes 17 year old boy) and grilled shrimp. I ordered tortilla soup. We also had chips and hot sauce . These were stale but that was only the beginning. My daughter's food came with no slaw. My son got his two sides but no shrimp. After a while I set a timer and 12 minutes into it my daughter got up and went to the bar and asked for help. In a bit two waitresses approached and I said we needed the grilled shrimp, slaw and my soup. A few minutes later they came and dropped some barely skillet warmed nasty shrimp to my son and told me they were out of my soup. Finally the manager and original waiter came over. I expressed frustration and the manager patronizingly dismissed the waiter.(the waiter was very nervous and apologetic) the manager offered us a free dessert and asked if I wanted a different soup. We were on a tight schedule so I did not want anything but the check. In the end we got a free "meal". But left hungry. I was never impressed by the advertisements for Applebee's and never felt the urge to go. Today I had to while visiting my grandparents. I ordered tea like usual, which was good and so was the service that we encountered. Trying to pick the safe route, I picked the nachos. This listed on the menu for chips with quest blanco, poco de gallo, and a choice of meat ( I chose the pork). What I got was a layer of plain chips (nothing on top) underneath a couple of chips with a whole flock of lettuce (which was watery and should never appear on nachos, especially when not listed on the menu). So instead of returning like a coward, I decided to test them out. There was barely any queso on the chips, and the so called poco de gallo was only a couple slices of tomato. The pork had a high essence of cilantro and red onion which made me avoid the pork. All of the items were poorly spread out by the chefs and the nachos left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. I just cannot stand to eat here!! I have gone to it three times hoping that my experience will change. To me, everything here is just precooked food that they heat up. The menu is extremely limited. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak here and was really looking forward to it. When he got it, it was apparent that it was a frozen, precooked version that is just heated up. It is like the breaded beef patties you can buy at HEB in the frozen section! Gross!! Also, they brought out my husbands order and I was still sitting there waiting for mine!! He was finished with his plate by the time they brought mine out!! We wanted to eat together, not sit there and watch while the other one eats. Just a poor place to eat with no variety whatsoever. If you want a good place to try a new dish or order one that you are familiar with. Then Applebees is the place for you. With a nice comfortable dining atmosphere, you can sit down and order drinks, food, beer, watch sports games on TV, borrow their restroom. It's nice, quite, and air conditioned. It's out by Walmart in Uvalde, like you're going out toward Knippa and Sabinal. They have steaks there and can order custom made hamburgers there. If you don't know what their dishes are, I wasn't really familiar with them with they opened the place up, then ask to look at their menu before you order, that helps. Also, you can have orders to go! That is what Applebees is known for! When you're driving thru Uvalde (and can drive toward Knippa) be sure to try eating at Applebees. Have friends, family, kids with you, great! Cause when you come here, You are "Eating Good in the Neighborhood!" Whew, I had to throw that one in there! Thanks for reading my review.
