Called appliance Science based on feedback from residents in my community on FB. I was not disappointed! The tech that came was knowledgeable, friendly and honest. He inspected the washer, determined that it was the control panel which was on back order. He personally showed me where/why it wasn't working and advised the cost of replacement but also advised where I could get a new machine for a reasonable price and let me know that he could fix it but that it's probably a better option to get a new one. I bought a refurbished washer and dryer from Larry for $700. He gave me his code to his storage unit to see the washer and dryer that he recommended I purchase. I looked at them and as he requested, I left a check for him for the purchase, which he cashed the same day. It took many voice messages and texts to get him to deliver/install them, which took over a week to do. "My phone's messed up" and "I was in a bad cell zone" were two of his reasons for his not showing up to deliver/install two days in a row that he said he would. After he finally did show up with the w/d, the first time using them, the washer was the loudest washer I've ever heard, and the dryer was running but not heating up, thus not drying the wet laundry. Plus, the dryer was absolutely filthy, which I assumed he'd clean before delivering it to me. After repeated reaching out to Larry about the dryer not working and the washing machine being super loud, I called him multiple times asking him to call me back, which he never did. He would only answer me via text, telling me he'd repair the w/d, or in case they weren't repairable, he'd swap them out for other refurbished washer and dryers, which was unacceptable to me. Since he wouldn't call me back on the phone which I asked him again to call me multiple times, I left a message for him saying  I'd like him to buy the w/d back from me for $500, and he could keep $200 for the drop off/and pick up. Via text, he said he would not agree to this. I normally don't write bad reviews, but this experience was so bad, that I shared with Larry that if we couldn't reach this compromise, my only recourse would be to eat the $700 and trash the "refurbished" w/d that he sold me, and then write an accurate, full review of my experience. Larry's horrible lack of integrity, honesty, horrible communication, and service should give potential future customers pause to do business with him. Buyer beware! read more

If appliance repair is a science, Todd is a Ph.D. My washing machine sounded like it was about to self-disintegrate like a cheap centrifuge in a sci-fi flick. Todd arranged a time, came by when he said he would, ordered the necessary part, came back and installed it. Then he came back again just to double check he had reattached the drain hose properly. Appliance Science is a one-man operation -- one very capable man with a truck and a cell phone. Todd can't answer the phone when he's in the middle of science class and sometimes the repairs take longer than he figured so you need to give him some slack on arriving at the precise moment. Here's two lagniappes: 1. Todd told me how to get my dishwasher to wash better - I thought it was broken -- at no charge: run Dishwasher Magic through the machine (you can buy it at Ace) and use way less dishwashing soap than the machine or the soap bottle recommends. One tablespoon per wash, says the Dr, The advice is free. Todd could have pretended to fix something and charged me for it. 2. Fabulous fix! Found Todd Johnson on Yelp, called and he arrived on time to check out our dead G&E gas dryer from 1982. It was previously dismantled by our dear handyman, we're assuming we will get a new one, which didn't happen due to limited size. Todd found out what's wrong, of course, ordered the missing parts for the next day. The drum was mistakenly taken off by our handyman prior, so it posed a tricky challenge to put it back up. I called Appliance Science when my dishwasher stopped running a few minutes into each cycle. I asked if anyone could come that day, and he said he could come between 1 and 2. Right on time, Todd came shortly after 1! I appreciated his promptness and the small window, so I wasn't waiting long. He diagnosed the problem quickly, looked up what a replacement part would be, and gave me his advice which was to just replace the dishwasher as it'd be about the same as replacing the part + labor and tax. I finally found a top notch service at reasonable prices. After calling a Frigidaire licensed repair outfit (super expensive) I learned I could use anyone since my fridge was out of warranty Todd is a one man show without the big overhead of most shops. He diagnosed the issue, quoted me the price (very fair), and ordered the parts all in 30 minutes. He came back the next day to install the part. (This turn-around is due to part availability, but if the part is in the SD area, Todd can make it happen.) I scheduled him to come, but then had a last minute conference call at home at the same time. He came just before the meeting started, and was done with the work without any hassle as I took the call. I just finished my first load of laundry with the new parts. Everything works perfectly. UPDATE --- He's still great. I had another issue with my washer (normal wear and tear - plastic cracks after many years). Todd came out again. It was just as easy to schedule the appointment. He fixed the problem in 15 min. I asked about getting a new washing machine. He recommended I keep my current one. The two minor issues I had were normal wear & tear after many years. Having a major appliance go down is a HUGE bummer and wildcard in your monthly budget and finances. I've had bad experiences with in home service calls that make me dread them about as much as a root canal. Now that I have found Todd at Appliance Science, my outlook on appliance repair has made a turn for the better. Todd is a pro. He knows the equipment and what's up with it. My dishwasher was not pumping out and was completely unusable. He immediately diagnosed the problem as a simple stuck solenoid...Showed me how to jiggle it if it happens again and charged me $20. He could have easily justified the pump/solenoid replacement costs to me but told me not to bother. My unit is very well built but if it is not run every week, the solenoid is prone to sticking. His advice - run it once a week, even if you don't need to and it will last for many years to come. Now that's quality, honest service. Some of these guys charge you $50 just to show up and will always find a way to get a couple of hundred bucks out of you. Not Appliance Science.
