Id like to say I've always enjoyed going to aqua east, however the one time I brought my african american friends to look at boards for the first time, the manager shane locked and stood in front of the door. This is his right to do so, however I am disgusted that this has never happened to me and my white friends and he consequently decided that this would be be appropriate to do for the first time when he had his first black customers. Why not do this any of the other times when I was getting much nicer boards? Why block the door and lock it when we are buying a cheap used board to teach them to surf on. Never in my life have I seen this behavior at any surf shop in florida and I am very much disappointed to see racism in this day and age, Shane the manager with curly hair. read more

I definitely do NOT recommend buying a new surfboard here. I am out $1200 for a board I rode once. I bought a 9'2 Stewart Mighty Flyer longboard from them 2 weeks ago. The staff selling me the board was friendly, and steered me to this board. I rode the board once, and it now has 20 pressure dents on the top of the board, as well as a pressure dent on the underside from my hand holding the rail when jumping over waves. The day I went out was 2' surf, I didn't grip the board hard. Two days later, I tried to return the board, or put it on consignment with them, but the manager refused. He told me that ALL surfboards get pressure dents this quickly. Which is a lie. My shaper friend says the glassing was subpar, on Stewart's part. The manager was rude, and not helpful at all. He told me I have to take up the issue with Stewart. Since Aqua East deals with them regularly, I would think that they would easily be able to do this, not me. When I called Stewart they told me the board I bought has a max weight limit that is 30-40 pounds less than I weigh. Now I have a board that has a poor glassing job, AND is the wrong size for me. read more

Forget customer service unless you want a roll of the eyes from a teenager who can tell you what you can clearly see or find on your own. The products they sell are good but the prices are very high. Aqua East has a tremendous selection of...well...everything 'Beachy '! Surfboards, skimboards, swimsuits, kayaks, swim goggles, sandals, sunglasses to every kind of accessory for each of these items. We purchased a surfboard here and bought the beginners accessories items as well; board wax, leash and car rack as well. The staff we worked with was pretty young, (and very tan!) but obviously knew quite a bit about surfboarding! They were enthusiastic to share some of their experiences in the local surf and even gave my son, who was purchasing all of these items, tips on where to go for some good beginner's waves. Meh. Not the best. If you want a warm surfer welcome this is not the place. If your new to skateboarding and need help this is not the place. I've gone to this shop twice and it's just so sad and a bit of a let down. Workers just doing a job no real want to help. Wanted to get a custom board for my sons 11th birthday set aside $500 because I don't know much about skating. I guess not being helped in this shop led me to a independent skate shop and man what a difference. Just see for yourself. read more

I don't get to Aqua East much anymore, I don't even live in Jacksonville; but it was a pillar in the surf community back in the late 70s and I remember hanging out there talking with Sandy Forsyth who was a mentor to a lot of teenage surfers at the time. When I am back in Jax I do stop by, and while I can see how Aqua East has grown it has become far too commercial for my tastes. I understand the main reason to have a business is to make profits, but in many ways the place seems to have lost its "soul." Yes, the staff are typical blonde beach types with big smiles and are very friendly; but somehow it all still seems to be too impersonal compared to the old days of a place where surfers would hang out and talk about the waves (or lack thereof, which unfortunately was and still is a common occurrence). In fact, that may be just what's bothering me...I see the sale staff, and I see a lot of customers; but I don't see the quintessential crowd of surfers that Aqua East used to attract. Now it's just a large retails store mostly targeting tourists' wallets. Bleh. Oh, and their prices are too high! read more

I whole heartedly agree with Cari. Aqua East has been around forever! It didn't start out this big or retailed. They were just a local surf shop serving the folks of Neptune Beach. They have grown over the years and so has their prices! $19.99 for a kids T-shirt (on the clearance rack!) is a little high for my tastes. Plus, maybe I just don't like my kids that much ;) The selection of womens swim suits wasn't all that impressive to me and at a starting point of high $20.00's for each piece, that is the normal price point, but I would have expected better deals this late in the season. The place is always busy and fun to go to. The staff always laid back and will greet you with a smile. What I do like about them is they know of every surf and skate event happening on the Fl. East Coast. As well as any local events being help at the beaches. They had a sign up on the door about movie night and concerts. read more

My husband, two-year-old son, and I stopped by early this morning after a sunrise walk on the beach to check out the store and shop for some apparel for them both. The literal second I walked in the door, the store associate said from about twenty feet away "We don't allow drinks in here, would you like to throw that away or put it back in your car?" referencing my Southern Grounds coffee cup (that had a lid on it.) I politely returned the coffee to my car so as not to be difficult. But honestly, it's 9am and I have a (lidded) coffee in hand...what do you think I am going to be capable of doing to your store? Lol. Also, she was very corporate and extremely direct in the way she handled it. I felt more like an employee myself rather than a paying customer. Anyway, it honestly kind of ruined the entire experience and bummed us out. Not exactly the Neptune Beach locals welcome you'd expect and it made me want to spend my money elsewhere. I felt like I was in a Walmart. I'll head to Sunrise next time without a doubt. read more

I've gone here since I was a teenager and now my kids come regularly. My son surfs and skates and has spent a ton of my money here. The place is always beautiful and clean. Great placement of merchandise. The staff is always nice and helpful. They actually know what they are talking about. I grew up going to Aqua East since I was a wee water baby. It's a family run shop that have been local to the beach for ages. It's grown over the years into the big store it is today & even expanding down to St. Aug. Some of the stuff can be a little pricey and put a slightly larger dent on your wallet, but the service I've always found when shopping here is what keeps me coming back. And I love supporting the local business when I have a chance. They're not just a place for your beach accessories. They have skate stuff as well. I do remember when they had skiing equipment back in the day, but they've moved away from that and focus on the sun sports these days. read more

Aqua East surf shop has been around for as long as I can remember and is basically Jacksonville's quintessential place to buy all things beach related. It is actually a pretty big place with a huge amount of inventory. On the first floor there is women's and men's clothing, shoes, accessories, and bathing suits. On the upper level is all of the equipment... surf boards, scuba gear, that kind of stuff. What I love about this place is it's history within the Jacksonville community. It's a real "local" kind of place. I used to love coming here to pick out my annual swim suit, snag a new pair of reefs, or grab some billabong shorts. However, I am not really much of a beach girl, and so I probably seemed a little poser-ish in these digs. Aqua East has gotten a little more commercial in recent years, but it's still a great surf shop. Everything is name brand surf/beach gear, so it can cost a pretty penny. Stopped in to buy my son his first surf board and upon arrival I knew was submerged into an un relatable world I've never indulged myself in before. My son Juan wants to be apart of the ocean life community and so when I went upstairs expecting the best I was met with nothing short of amazing service. The younger tall blonde haired man named Merit (I hope I didn't butcher that too bad) came right over to help me with his knowledge of wave riding and surfboards and helped picked my sons first board out for me. Juan hasn't stopped talking about surfing ever since, any time there is waves I take him down to the beach and it's so amazing. I don't think that you can live at the Beaches and not shop at Aqua East. Their selection and customer service far outweighs the competition, and I am always impressed with the range of items they have in stock. And if it's not in stock, they will make sure to order it for you! They have amazing annual sales that I love to take advantage of, and they carry an assortment of brands and styles that will accommodate whatever price point you are looking for. They take their business seriously, which is why they've been a staple at the beaches for so long, and I respect that. They are active in the community, and I couldn't imagine not stopping by this store first for any of my beach needs! read more

I purchased a paddle board at Christmas along with a paddle and a leash. I could not locate the leash when i wanted to use the board so I stopped by Aqua East and picked one up two weeks ago. Today, after finding the original leash, I went back to the store to return the un-openned, unused leash I originally purchased. It was the same exact model and price, but had a different bar code. They refused to refund the item as that exact bar code was purchased in December, more than 30 days which was their return policy. It didn't matter that I purchased it's twin two weeks ago. Since my original purchased was $1,200. I expected to be treated as a valuable customer. The manager was inflexible and definately did not promote good customer service. In todays competitive market it doesn't make sense to shop somewhere where they do not value their customer. read more

This is a cool, large, two-story surf shop. We rented a two person kayak from them. The guys that helped us were great. Great price but everything VERY used. No problem...right. Fortunately, the kayak was sound. They did not provide delivery...no problem. We get the kayak in the ocean and start paddling. Within one hour, one of the paddles fractures at the paddle blade's joint. We got it back to shore, went back to Aqua East to get another paddle and decided to rent it another day since our first day was interrupted...no big deal...stuff happens. We return it and we are told we had to pay for a new blade. We were stunned. How do I break a blade while paddling? Neither my wife nor I (in our late 40's) had any expectation of having to pay for an extremely old, already damaged paddle (i have pictures to prove it) and it was not suggested to her that we would be liable when we picked up the replacement. Furthermore, we never thought for a moment to ask them to credit us for part of the day's rental due to the lost use time and drive time to get the replacement paddle. We had a good time. The assistant manger had no interest in our story. She said her manager had already made the decision. I asked to speak to this manager. The asst mgr called her, spoke to her, and hung up without letting me speak so I assumed the mgr told her not to charge us. She started banging away at the register without saying a word. After a minute, I asked what was up. She said she was charging my credit card for the paddle and it didn't matter if I agreed or not. Caveat emptor? You decide. read more
