I've been surprised that there's a famous LFS here in Houston. I took a break from the hobby while social media was growing so it was nice to learn I have such close access to ADG! I'd say this is the LFS for freshwater aquascapers with a huge supply of rocks, driftwood, and anything else you can think of for your hardscape. It has tons of immaculate tanks for your viewing/inspo pleasure from freshwater, saltwater, and paladariums. They also have some options for aquatic plants (more emersed than submerged) but I have been able to find the tissue culture packs and got some nice harder to find anubias and blyxa. Freshwater stock wise they have various nanofish/shrimp along with larger cichlids. On the saltwater side, they have a variety of fish, inverts, and corals. I've had the pleasure of working with Josh and he's very knowledgeable and also willing to help order some species if you're looking for anything in particular. I've also seen how they keep relationships with local hobbyists and they also run aquarium services. I think ambiance-wise, this feels closer to a viewing space than a LFS in some regards. There's ample space, you're really provided time to peruse, and there's almost as much display tank volume as selling volume. read more

I just had one of the best, if not THE best experience at aquarium design group. First and foremost, thank you so much to Hip! I was overwhelmed with looking at all of the aquariums, paladariums, and terrariums that they have in the store in a good way. Everything is well taken care of including the fish. They have such an amazing amount and assortment of fish. Hip was so knowledgeable on all the fish that they had and even showed me some fish I've never seen before. I do like that with some of the scapes that they have you can actually just purchase them outright which I think is amazing especially for people who might not have the eye for a good design or the time to make their own scape. IF YOU ARE NEW TO THE HOBBY DO NOT GO HERE. I visited with my friend during the weekday because he's visited before and told me a lot about this business. I was very excited. I wanted to start out with a smaller tank, preferably I wanted something nice but easy to maintain I had a budget of about 1-2k however you would've thought I wanted to pay with coupons with the way they treated us. We tried to get help with choosing what to actually buy and we approached a staff member who immediately began being rude. I asked which bag of gravel to get and he said "You're getting a small tank so get a small bag" Like what? Aren't you supposed to be helping me? He proceeded to make me and my friend feel stupid for asking questions or needing help. This was literally the absolute worst introduction to the hobby/industry and it legitimately left a sour taste in my mouth. For reference I'm 22 and so is my friend. I believe he may have thought we had no money or weren't serious and that's why he treated us how he did. However, it was no excuse and absolutely infuriating, embarrassing and humiliating. After realizing we weren't wanted we left the building and went to bass pro instead lol. A word of advice to the business. Don't let employees drive people away from your business/passion. It's already a small niche and people like the fishtank professor just turn more and more people away from it. Thank you! read more

I've been here a few times and had the same experience each time. The store is beautiful and the prices on livestock are surprisingly reasonable. It's a good place to find some of the rarer or new plant varieties that the YouTube aquascapers highlight. I can't speak to the knowledge of the staff as no one acknowledged my existence let alone spoke to me anytime I've been. Seems I'm not posh enough to be worth their time. Be careful with the owner, he's the kind of guy who gives you the world to seal the deal but once the job is complete, all that charisma he invested is counteracted with broken after broken after broken promises. Pretty much the negative stigma associated with a used-car-salesman. He'll sell you a used car, great, tells you it runs good, throws in a few fact checks to remove any doubt and voila, after the sale don't even try to go to him if anything goes wrong, his job is done. Next. Key points ----------- - his prices aren't the best, they are in par with other LFS in and outside of Houston, competitive by a hundred or so dollars. - his water is not the best water, don't listen to him. You can only get so much alk, ph and calcium ppm per gallon, anyone can do it at home. - everything he says is true about his fish and corals, but guess what? Same goes for every other fish store, it's nothing to brag about, it's fundamental for a successful fish store. It's like a bestbuy you employee selling you a TV and pointing out that it's a deal because they give you a remote, 1 year factory warranty and the tv turns on and off. - you're better off keeping convos short and brief, he has a way with words. If you guys want honest and good people who aren't scared of telling you the truth even if you don't like it, give Mike or David a call at URBAN AQUATICS. You can also give Rolando a call at THE FISH PLACE. They have been doing this long enough and know customers appreciate honesty and reliability more than someone who just tells you what you want to hear just to live another day at the cost of their customers patience. I unfortunately quit the hobby in the early 2000's because of school. I just recently got back in to it. ADG used to not have a storefront like they do now, as it was mainly a showroom. It isn't anymore. This IS not your guppy/goldfish store. This place caters to the hardcore hobbyist who demand the best equipment and selection of livestock. I primarily keep live planted aquariums that require very specific fertilizers, lighting and other gadgets to make them work. Healthy plants are a major part of my hobby and ADG sells the best. I'm pretty sure they are the only dealer of Tropica brand aquaculture plants(industry leader in aquarium plants). Most of the store is geared to the "nature style" freshwater aquarium....and they're the best in region for this. Regardless of what you keep(fresh/salt/reef) they'll have what you need and they only employ the best people in the hobby to help you with your purchase. If anything, stop by and look at the tanks in their gallery. They are literally works of art. NOTE: They sell DI/RO Freshwater & Saltwater by the gallon...and it's self serve!! read more

Clean, organized, educated staff and nice owners. competitively priced and the stock on hand is healthy and displayed in a way to prevent overcrowding of livestock. Absolutely gorgeous aquarium and fish store. It's like Apple and Tesla got together and made a really awesome fish store, only better. These people clearly understand design, aquascaping, and fish. Going to ADG is like going to an art gallery and enjoying living jewels. I LOVE IT. The atmosphere is really quiet and beautiful. It's clean like no other aquarium store I have ever been in. I had high expectations after hearing about ADG in my aquarists' club. When we went in, of course the ambiance and beauty of their samples floored me. What really got me hooked was how healthy all their livestock appeared. Their coral tank is amazing. I cannot speak to the variety of fish for saltwater, since I am not familiar with it. The freshwater selection is excellent. I especially love their nano fish selection. I'm a big ole nano-fish fan, so I can't help but drool over their beautiful fishes. I also love their selection of rock and wood for hardscapes. Their sand box allows you to test drive your hardscape ideas before you buy, which I like. The people at ADG are also really nice. You might think things could get pretentious, given the art gallery feel, but no. These are fish folk and they are happy to talk about their passion for the hobby. When you need a place to inspire your next aquascape, this is a place you must visit. The decor and scaping skills of ADG is made to be admired and inspiring. During my visit, I looked at their stocking as well and was fortunate enough to witness a couple angelfish (a pair) for sale laying eggs and fertilizing on a piece of driftwood.. Nice facility to either browse or purchase freshwater or saltwater livestock. This was my first time coming here, because the forum users at Houstonfishbox rave about this place. I like the aquarium set ups and the lighting in the place. It's almost like i'm visiting an actual aquarium exhibit, The place was a little hard to find due to not having large signage. The only indication I had to the building was the number address on the top of the building and the logo in front of the door. They are more like a boutique, as they do not have a large variety of livestock. Their prices are fair and staff is helpful enough. read more

If you like aquariums and you have not visited this showroom you need to go. I cannot use the word "store" because this establishment goes way beyond retail. The aesthetic of the display tanks are strikingly beautiful, clean and simple in their design. It is worth a visit just to see the tanks they have in the showroom. They also have a nice selection of fish and are actually priced lower than many other places in Houston. The livestock area, and everything else is immaculate and looks stunning. They are building out a new display room that is very large and should be done in September. Every detail is well thought out and very well done. Josh and Don are very knowledgable, friendly and helpful. I live an hour away but I don't think I will buy fish anywhere else from now on. This is a must see destination. It is located in a strip of warehouse like offices and only has a very small sign/logo on the door. They are at the first corner of the building so look for it. read more

I am setting up a 20 gallon freshwater aquarium for my home and heard about the Aquarium Design Group from a friend who has exquisite , very large, salt water tanks. This is such a beautiful, classy place that when I entered I felt a little out of my element. Immediately, however, I was helped by the delightfully friendly Sasha who treated my small needs as if I were decorating an office building with a million dollar budget. They have a sand table where Sasha partitioned off a section that was the right size of my tank's footprint. She made some artistic suggestions to get me started, then gave me free rein to play around with hardscapes from the 100's of different rocks they have until I created what I wanted. After almost two hours I tore myself away with some beautiful rocks and plants I haven't seen anywhere else. The prices are very reasonable, too. Careful, this place is an addiction! Immaculate tanks fill the showroom floor and every room off the showroom offers variety in soft and hard scape, fresh and saltwater fish/shrimp/snails/etc., plants and coral, tanks, filters and endless supplies. One of the owners has a little OCD about keeping tanks clean, so you'll see him on the floor ALWAYS busily caring for things. Don is a true fish biologist and will spend quality time talking to you about your habitat and species. This is a family business and these guys are truly dedicated to their jobs! Today was my first time going to this store, and I was blown away. Everything was so modern, new, and elegant. The aquarium gallery was stunning, all the tanks were BEAUTIFUL. The room with fish for sale was amazing as well, saltwater and freshwater. The tanks were clean and all the fish were healthy. All of the fish were priced well, not too expensive and but not cheap. But you pay for quality here. They also sell hardscape materials, fish food, and medications. The workers are welcoming and kind as well. ADG! To think that my girlfriend and I came here on a whim. Decided to take a break from work and go some where we have never been. We drove 45 minutes to get here and WE WOULD HAVE DROVE 3 HRS to see this place! ADG is an aquarium hobbies dream. This gallery has something for everyone.
