My Favorite Fish Store! This is hands down my favorite fish store! It's such a relief to know the crew here--Jillian, Evan, and Chris--are not only friendly and laidback, but also incredibly knowledgeable and experienced. I'm fairly new to the hobby and they've always been patient in answering my questions, guiding me through everything, and encouraging me to do my research before purchasing. I'm especially into puffer fish and rainbow fish, and every fish I've brought home from here has been healthy and in great condition. Of course, as a buyer, it's also important to do your own due diligence--acclimating and quarantining properly really helps your fish settle in and thrive. What makes this store even better is that they offer special orders! If there's something specific you're looking for, talk to Evan--he's amazing! Super friendly and attentive, and he'll take great care of you and your order. Every visit is a great experience--the whole crew creates a welcoming, fun, and relaxed environment. The staff seems to stand over your shoulder... seems like every time I'm there it feels as though I'm being rushed and watched... for me browsing fish isn't something that can be rushed especially if you're indecisive...the fish that I did end up purchasing are all doing well however the the snails I received looked beat up and for the amount I got I expected better...all of their shells were cracked and one of the guys working seemed to have little to no knowledge about the fish or plants.... Great assortment of animals that includes fish and other reptiles and amphibians. I drove over an hour to this place and it was well worth it. The owners absolutely care about what they do, and it shows. The employees are also knowledgeable and take good care of the animals they have. While it is a little on the expensive side, it's worth it knowing the animals that you do get are already happy and healthy. Highly recommend to visit here instead of chain pet stores like PetSmart or PetCo! read more

It's hard to find an independently owned store that sells tropical and salt water fish in this area. In fact, this may be the only one! I don't know how long they've been in the biz, but for at least the last dozen years that I know of. The building itself is sizeable and painted with a fun under the sea scene with brightly colored paint. That in itself is attractive enough to draw anyone in! Inside they have a huge variety of fish and supplies to keep those who enjoy this hobby happy. Some say their prices are high. Can't say as I haven't owned a tank in so many years. I just stop in about once every few years just to browse and enjoy seeing all that they offer. On a recent visit I was happy to see they're still around, especially since most people seem to go to Petsmart and whatever the other big box pet store is in the area to fulfill their tropical fish collection desires. As I perused through the store enjoying the fish I saw a couple of tanks that looked like it was time for some cleaning maintenance. Continuing down the aisles I was shocked to see there were in fact several in dire need of some serious cleaning. I mean it was beyond the stage of an algae buildup and the water was very, very cloudy. The fish seemed to be hanging in there, considering the conditions, but none that I would buy from such a badly kept habitat. Honestly, I don't know what to make of what I saw beyond more tanks than I've ever seen in a store being so unkempt. I didn't post any pictures of them in case it's taken care of by the time this review posted, but I've never encountered this before in all the years I've visited. This store has a lot of rare creatures, and their website is updated weekly with new additions so you can see their new stock before making the drive all the way there. With there not being many aquarium stores in the area besides chain stores, I'm glad to have an independently-operated store in the area I can go to. The employees have always been helpful to me, although I've been keeping fish for several years so I don't have many questions to ask them. They have cool pet insects sometimes too. read more

Grimy store, slimy people... If you are a beginner with fish, do NOT GO HERE! Instead of helping they will scam you. My fiancée went in to start a tank and was given wrong/misleading information on a number of subjects. Substrate, number of fish that should be put in the tank, filter, you name it. It is pretty obvious that these guys work off of commission and just want a quick check. The store is disgusting and needs to be cleaned regularly. Staff is extremely unprofessional. When celebrating a good day in sales, "cocaine and strippers" were jokingly mentioned in front of me. Do not do business with them. read more

I've read ridiculous reviews such as "all of the fish I buy here die the next day." Either this person knows nothing about fish or is not telling the truth. Being a frequent customer and quite frankly, a huge fan of Aquarium Outfitters, I'm both confused and saddened by the negative reviews that I've read here. Ever since I discovered this hidden gem, it's quickly and easily become not only my absolute go-to for aquarium supplies and healthy fish, but also for advice and guidance. STAFF: These guys know their stuff and have always been friendly and helpful. Even with such a large collection of all different species of fish, they are always a source of interesting and valuable information. I'm a pretty big worrier when it comes to my fish being happy and they have always been attentive when I'm asking a million different questions about different species of fish, water quality, maintenance etc. The owner, Kurt (aka: "The Fish Guru") definitely lives up to his name. If you have the chance, pick his brain about fish. You'll leave with lots of knowledge (and probably with a few big laughs) under your belt. He's entertaining, friendly and is an expert in just about any aquarium. Such a great resource to have for any level of fish hobbyist. STOCK: I've always had freshwater community tanks growing up, but never really had much of a variety because larger retail chain pet stores typically carry the same stock of fish species...all of the time. I can't even begin to tell you how excited me and my fiancé were when we walked through the front doors of the eclectic exterior building into what I can only describe as an aquatic candy store. SO MANY TANKS! And all teeming with beautiful and healthy fish. (I was also very pleasantly surprised to learn that each and every one of the tanks are INDIVIDUALLY filtered. For those of you who are seasoned fish hobbyists...you know how great this is. For those of you who are checking out AO because you want to get into the hobby, having individually filtered tanks for all of these fish is pretty impressive considering the amount of time and effort that it has to take to maintain them all. It's also extremely important in the event that any fish have an illness (this does happen, guys) that it doesn't spread to the other tanks. Anyway...back to their selection. They have so many different species and variations of species that I've never seen before. If you're an experienced hobbyist and are looking for something new, this is the place! After years of sticking to just freshwater community tanks, we decided to venture into the world of Cichlids. We wanted to make sure that we were doing everything right prior to stocking our new tank - everything from water quality to decor and fish selection. Not only did they pump us full of knowledge, they had everything in stock that we would need, walked us through the details and gave specifics about each product. They also have a pretty sizable selection of natural rocks and substrates for those of you who like a more natural feel to your aquariums. "NO DOGS ALLOWED" should be plastered to the outside of the door. I frequent this place occasionally for their aquarium supplies and fish. Today, I brought my Frenchie on a leash - because if dogs are allowed anywhere, it's in a pet store - and as soon as I walk in, 3 big Dobermann Pinschers behind the counter freak out and start barking, out of control. I walk past, and they stop barking. A few minutes later I walk back past the counter, and the big Dobermanns start freaking out again. The place is run by a few amiable young guys, and one extremely bitter, unfriendly old man who I guess is the owner or manager. The old man approached me and told me "You need to take your dog out to your car. You're causing a scene." Exactly whose dogs were causing a scene? My dog was silent and well-behaved the whole time. I did indeed take my dog out to the car, and left. I will NOT return to this store. There's another aquarium store 15 minutes away that is quite helpful and friendly. I will not give my money to a store where customers are treated this way. read more

We immediately walked in and were greeted by multiple sales associates. Within minutes someone actually was taking out a snake for us to look at and touch, it was super cool. The store has a plethora of fish items and plenty of cool fresh and saltwater species. DEFINITELY don't recommend. We are aquarium enthusiasts who have frequented several aquarium shops in our area. A filter malfunction resulted in the death of most of our cichlids, so we found ourselves looking to replace them in the middle of a pandemic. Supply shortages meant that our usual store, as well as many others we contacted, were out of the size we needed. Imagine our surprise when Aquarium Outfitters answered our phone inquiry saying they had a wide selection. Our concerns with the store began the moment we entered. Our state still has very strict rules regarding social distancing, maximum capacity, and sanitation for all retailers. They were adhering to NONE of them. The store was PACKED, with neither costumers nor employees wearing masks. Our usual shop has limited entry, requires masks, and their employees wear protection, as well. As we were masked and gloved, we went ahead and cautiously entered the store. It was true they had a wide selection of cichlids. It was also obvious why. They were charging nearly THREE TIMES AS MUCH for the same size and type as the other aquarium shop we frequent. Their supplies were also very overpriced, with a water testing kit we use costing double what we were charged at other shops. When we declined to purchase any fish due to cost, the gentleman that I presumed to be the owner rudely stated that he needed to make money. I pointed out that a store just down the street charges far less. I mentioned the store by name, at which time employees standing nearby laughed and disparaged the other store. To be clear, the store we frequent is NOT a national chain. It is a small, local aquarium shop. We quickly left the establishment after this and won't be back. While they are a large store carrying a wide selection of stock, they are also VERY expensive and unprofessional. read more

Sure, the store is expensive and the staff could be a bit nicer to newer hobbyists but name me a better store in the area. Their selection and quality of live stock is leagues above any big-box store, and you end up paying for that higher quality of product. Most of the bad reviews here for this store are focusing on customer service, and i agree it does need improvement. Maybe some people really value that customer service when they give a store their business, to me its not a top priority for a pet store. I want healthy, hard to find live stock / plants, and they have it. Independent fish stores are quickly becoming a thing of the past, hence why i support my local fish stores given the chance. Put whatever feelings you have for their staff aside and focus on what they are selling you then judge the store based on that. This is how i came to the conclusion of a 4/5 star review. The only thing keeping me from giving a full 5 star review is the prices are higher than you will find elsewhere. You could always go to a big-box store and pay half the price for a fish but in my personal experience you are getting much lower quality than what you will find here. read more

First the positives... Very large selections of fish and a few reptiles. They seem healthy. Having said that though, I couldn't comment on if they were with the right tank mates or had fin issues as every time I went in it was for a specific type of fish and I don't know that much about saltwater fish or breeds of fish other than what I have. Now the negatives... Way over priced!! Poor or no customer service. They act like you're pulling them away from something when you can actually get ahold of a person. The owner is rude and could care less if you ever come back. Seems to be a 'Good ole Boy' place because from what I've seen, if your one of them you get all the help. For instance: I pulled up one weekday afternoon and there were no other cars there. Employee was standing outside smoking by the door. I nod, smile and walk in. Head to the fish tanks looking for something specific and he doesn't come in behind me. Okay, I think maybe he's giving me some time to look around while he finishes his smoke. Well after several minutes, these two guys come in and he walks in with them talking about a fish they just got the other week and what other food they could feed it. I'm now standing by the register and the guy just keeps helping them even though I was there before them. There were several other times the employees seemed to be helping guys in the store while ignoring me. As for other experiences... I went in and there were a few other customers in the store and a couple of employees that day. I found what I wanted and walked over to the area where they bag and tag the fish and waited while trying to catch the eye of one of the employees. They just kept going about their business and totally ignored me. So I walked over towards one and as I was walking up someone stepped up to the same spot I had been standing previously. The employee walks past me and asks them if they need help. So then he helps that person and I keep standing there waiting for him to finish, so that I would be next in line. He finished with that person and then walked in the room next to the area like I wasn't even there. Finally the owner... I made a small purchase and while getting the fish bagged up asked the employee if they ever carried a certain type of fish. He said he didn't know and told me the owner was at the front to ask him. I checked out and asked the owner about the fish. He literally said, never heard of them and went back to his accounting or whatever he was doing. Didn't say I'll check into it and get back to you or anything. He barely acknowledged that I was there. Like I said before. It is like he doesn't care if you ever come back in. While I try to support local businesses over big box stores, I can't recommend this place. The only reason to go here is because they have a selection that you can't get at the big box stores; however, you can find them online for cheaper even after adding in the cost of shipping. I am not one to write many negative based reviews, however my husband made a purchase here and after we decided to go another route I asked that he return the items. He gets to the store and they refused to do a return on items that were never opened the same day he purchased.. I looked on their company website and nothing about returns being unaccepted was listed. If the company really cares for people's business they would not have a service refusing mindset. I know of most stores refusing returns on fish and livestock, but never of a fish store refusing returns on shelf products that were unused. Unfortunately, we will stick with Fintastic, Reef Critters or Triad Reef for our salt water aquarium needs. read more

Easily the most unique aquarium and small-pet store in the Triangle area and beyond. "The fish guy" has been around since pretty much as long as my friends can remember, in his colorfully-painted building along the route to downtown Wake Forest. The staff are knowledgeable, and the store carries the largest and most varied selection of freshwater fish I think I have seen in any fish store--you'll find other stores with as many fish, sure, but how many places sell such things as freshwater moray eels and elephant nose fish? Saltwater fish, bettas, and pond fish are also sold here, as well as supplies. I think you can find live rock and some inverts here but not corals. Aquarium Outfitters also sells small pets such as mice and rabbits, and associated supplies. Overall, this store is certainly worth visiting if you live anywhere even remotely nearby. I live 45 minutes away and have made the trip more than once to do business here--and, needless to say, I've had no trouble with the quality of the fish sold here. read more

FEEDBACK & REVIEW: This aquarium store has a great selection of different fish and supplies, However it will help immensely to put the prices on the tanks so the customer does not have to keep asking the help who themselves do not know and the prices are generated on the fly based on who the customer is asking the question. Not a recommended LFS! I'm starting a new tank, so I went in to check out the selection, especially tank decor. I can't say they were terribly helpful. When asked where a product was, they made fun of me for having not seen it under a fish tank. How stupid of me for not knowing where everything is in YOUR store. Mostly I was extremely concerned for their livestock. There were dead fish in too many of their tanks, and large fish in tanks that were far too small. Tanks were dirty, and floor was cluttered with a broken tank. Their selection of tank decor isn't bad and it's decently priced, but don't believe the tag for the driftwood that says it won't discolor your water, because it most certainly will. I'm glad I boiled my piece several times before placing it in my tank. If you're going for their poorly lit decor bins, mind your fingers. A cricket jumped out of one of them at me, and in the very next bin was a fish that I can only imagine committed suicide. Dried up, so it wasn't a recent escape attempt. I had to look twice because I initially thought it was a leaf. Finally, and most depressing was their betta "selection". They were stored in maybe a cup of water, in the smallest possible container. Many were dead. Their woeful options for "tanks" for the bettas included tiny, unheated, unfiltered cubes that didn't even amount to a half gallon of water. They even had a 3in diameter glass vase. The fish can't even stretch out completely in that thing! It's cruel and irresponsible to tell people that it's an acceptable home for a living creature. DO NOT let them tell you that betta fish prefer small containers. It's a line fish stores throw out to get a quick sell. They can survive in a cup, just as a human can survive in a cell. read more

Sent my daughter to purchased it, got it home and it was not true to size. Called. Mike back the same day and told him I was going to return it. Before reading any of these reviews, assuming mine even makes it out of the graveyard of ghosted reviews, go ahead and scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Show hidden reviews" This is why Yelp is terrible, horrible, no good, and very bad. It gives drastically altered impressions of businesses. Go read some of these hidden reviews of this fruitcake of a pet store. Do you really think the people leaving those reviews are robots? Come on Yelp. Why would you do this if you weren't in bed with businesses? I concur that the selection of lifestock at this pet store is great for this area, but at what cost? Besides completely outragious pricing, they have lots of other things counting against them. These guys with the exception of the owner himself are all dinguses with little knowledge of any of the subject matter in which they are supposed to reign supreme. I am to assume they are family members with no other applicable skills or capabilities. One is so close to "special" I feel guilty even identifying him for fear of public ridicule. I have worked at a reputable (no, not a chain) pet store for many years of my life. The ONLY knowledge these guys possess are that of salesmen. I have witnessed them telling customers catestrophically wrong information that will inevitably result in loss of live animals. They will then rant and rave about their return/death policy on live merchandise luring you into a false sense of security, but will not tell you that they will not at all reimburse or replace anything to you in the fish department unless your water quality is PERFECT. And I mean perfect salinity, zero nitrates (near impossible), nitrites, and ammonia (with freshwater - nearly impossible). Water that would be safe for even the most picky animals will be trash talked and instead of fixing their clearly diseased fish, they'll try to sell you a huge pile of extremely expensive, harmful chemicals to "fix it." They don't ask how old your tank is before selling you 200 dollars in fish. They don't ask how big the tank is or in any way try to make sure the animals will live until after you come back with them dead as a doornail and wanting an explanation. Thankfully I didn't see many obvious signs of disease on the fish, but I did see some housed with incompatible tank mates and the resulting duress caused by fin nipping, aggression, and running into the tank decor, so I guess they at least possess moderate knowledge of the pet trade; they just have no interest in relaying this information to you, the buyer. I am giving them 2 stars in hopes that yelp will actually allow this to show Aquarium Outfitter's true colors. PLEASE click on the bottom link to see all the people who gave these guys 1 star. Yes it's a mom and pop organization. Yes, Petco and Petsmart have bad reps, but both of them are trying and have come a very long way from the days of old. Having managed a pet store, I would turn people away from chains all day everyday, but these guys are doing it wrong. They are misleading people, and their prices are beyond asinine! 20 dollars for a Mbuna African Cichlid? If you see a younger guy behind the desk, he is the worst and you should just leave. He is a complete idiot and a jerk, but you can tell the owner has had his fair share of problems with the guy, because he tries REALLY hard not to be a jerk. He had great customer service and was informed of how to properly care for our fish that were at home as well as the ones we picked up. Please don't be fooled by some of these reviews up here.. My father has done business with this place for years and recently I've set up my own fresh and saltwater aquariums.. I'm very impressed with everything I've purchased from Kurt and his staff.. All of the fish are healthy and the equipment is top notch.. All of the tanks here are individually filtered which is unheard of at other local shops.. If a problem erupts, it is quarantined to that one tank and that really impresses me.. I would rather pay a few dollars more per fish to support this business... Well worth my 45-50 minute drive from Smithfield for the wide selection at this store.. I will agree with you that they are not the friendliest of staff but if you are looking for fresh water fish other then the basic fish at Petsmart this is the place to go in the triangle. Dont just go to Petsmart they are killing the hobby IMO. Shop locally owned fresh water aquarium stores. Check out Carolina pet supply in Garner, they always have a large selection catfish. Lionfish, Tigerbarbs, and Bearded Dragons oh my! Aquarium Outfitters is huge on the inside of the store. I came looking for a rare breed of fancy goldfish, Butterfly Moors which are pretty hard to find. AO didn't have any but they had a dedicated coldwater/pond section of goldfish and koi. They also had snakes, birds, cichlids, saltwater fish, invertebrates, and a huge selection of supplies. The owner was friendly and chatted with everyone, and could tell me what was coming in next week. I didn't find my fish but for anyone in the hobby this is worlds better than a small section of a big box store. read more

I absolutely love this place. Everytime I have ever been here it's clean and full of everything and anything I want plus more! Snakes, spiders, birds, rodents, freshwater fish and saltwater fish, just to name a few, PLUS all the supplies for their caring needs. The owner and employees have always been helpful. Although the owner is much more knowledgeable on the fish and other animals, his employees have always tried to help and if they couldn't they'd ask the owner. Today I called there because I was having problems with fish I got from a different store and the owner even helped me over the phone with fish he did not even sell. I believe his prices are great considering he's running a store with well kept healthy and happy fish/animals and excellent customer care. As I said before, he even helps over the phone! Took some very overgrown fish in, the owner was so nice. He took my fish (thank God) and helped me with my plans for changing to a community tank of smaller species. I learned more in the hour I spent there than I have in all my numerous trips to the other local pet stores. He gave me a clear conscience leaving the pets that had overgrown my tank, knowing they will be well cared for, and will find a good home in the future. And this he did as he was attempting to leave town for a few days to spend time with family. I have been in before and the employees were not as great to deal with. So can't say how many times I have passed this place either driving or running while living in Wake Forest for the past 7 years. I am glad I stopped in and about 5 mins before they closed. I have a sick goldfish and a 4yr old at home that was desperate to get him better. So I took a picture of the fish and went here vs going to Petsmart down the street. An older gentleman looked at the photo and was able to quickly identify what was wrong. Now the things I purchased may not save the goldfish, but I feel better educated then when I left Petco or Petsmart after purchasing the fish. Some places have one or two of a certain fish, Kurt has dozens ! I consider myself pretty knowlegable with fish keeping but when I need advice, I ask Kurt ! He's got decades of experiance. The store has been there for years and I can tell you from experiance tanks get dirty,racks get dirty,floors get dirty, you get salt creep etc.. Well, they have made a concentrated effort to do the down and dirty grunge work that often gets overlooked in a busy business and it shows. Have gone there over the years and so-so service. Could not get any help today which is unusual. Went once to get something specfic for my quaker parrot and they didn't know what it was (it's in every other pet store). Love to see the many unusual pets, but didn't know you could have a mini-pig! when you get the owner he is knowledgeable but not today! He was roaming in the back. We will go there on occasion, but unfortunately have more luck in specifics at Pet Smart. read more

The owner of this store is insane. Some days he is extremely kind and tells you jokes. Other days he treats you like you're the scum of the earth. Most recently I visited the store and was browsing when an employee asked if I needed help. I told him what I needed, and while he was retrieving it the owner intercepted him and told him that there were other customers before me who needed help. Before this, I overheard him telling a highly offensive joke (even using the N word) to a friend while he was running his store. In my lifetime I have held many customer service positions and if I had EVER treated a customer with such insolence as had been given me I would have most definitely been fired. On top of this, the conditions of the store are atrocious. The owner is probably a hoarder, as there is random junk cluttered around the store (and piled dangerously high in the back rooms). I would not buy any pet from this place simply because of the disgusting environment, it's no better than buying from a mill. read more

Great selection of fish. Knowledgable and personable employees. Prices could be cheaper but not unreasonable. Recommend...

Visited there for the first time today. Was told our water had low PH so they sold us acid reducer or so we thought. After adding this to our tank for over an hour most of our fish died, upon closer examination of the product he sold us turns out it was acid booster, which killed all the tank. We called the store & were immediately met with an unsympathetic attitude. Stay away from this place, they are bad news, we had some of these fish for years and now have nothing & no way to replace some of them. read more

Good selection. Poor customer service. I took my daughter in to get some fish tank supplies. 2 employees were in the store. Neither acknowledged our presence. I proactively attempted to speak with an employee but he was not interested in talking with me and walked away as I was describing what I was looking for. read more
