Arbetter is an unpretentious place in Cocoa, Florida that offers a menu set around simple, fast food type items and are primarily known for their hot dogs. I headed over to Arbetter one rainy Sunday afternoon and pulled into this no-frills type place that is located next to the Boys and Girls Club on Dixon Avenue. The service was extremely friendly. Basically, you order at the cash register and serve it to you there at the counter. I opted for two hot dogs, one with chili, onion, and mustard and the other was their pizza dog. I opted to upgrade for their all-beef hot dogs and the total for these two hot dogs were under eight dollars. I asked for the brand of hot dogs, but they were uncertain. They were skinless and not bad. The hot dog with chili, onion, and mustard had a good amount of chili on it and the chili was made in-house and was good. You can tell this wasn't some cheap chili out of a can. The pizza dog was somewhat unique and topped with pepperoni. It was pretty good, though I woukd say that I preferred the hot dog with chili, onion, and mustard. Arbetter has been here for quite a bit of time and it is easy to see why the community has embraced Arbetter. The place is definitely a no-frills type place, but that is part of the charm. Swerved in the drive thru like a crazy hungry man... it's been a while since I last been here.. but I know this place been a lasting establishment since the 1980's. I just wanted a few beef hotdogs, so I ordered 2 Chilli dogs and 1 regular hotdog w/ relish, Ketchup and mustard... the dogs had some soft buns that I liked. (Milkshake review) I've seen this place millions of times and overlooked it....it wasn't until two days ago I suggested my friend to grab a milkshake with me....she said I should try arbetters. I ordered their small strawberry shake which definitely seemed more like a medium. The shakes are very smooth and have bits of strawberry in them. You can also mix flavors together. They do have a functional drive thru, it may appear that it's not but it does work. read more

I wanted to like this place. You see a sign in the window that says 5 dogs for 7 bucks, I want to jump on board. But there is nothing special about the hotdogs. Nothing... They are the hotdog you would boil or simmer in water and slap in a bun. Giving it a fancy title, don't make this a fancy hotdog. While I was not expecting a true Chicago Dog, the "Chicago-Style" Dog was not even close. Now I also got a polish sausage, and it was decent. I liked that far more than the dog. The traditional "hot dog" establishment used to be commonplace in every small town across America. Today, it's hard to find them, but they're out there, further complicating things is the fact, you can get a good hot dog at plenty of places that don't just specialize in hot dogs, which mean you must sell a dog that is considered "best in show" unleashing flavors and textures that are simply irresistible, if it isn't memorable chances are I'll forget you exist. Arbetter's Hot Dog, has been serving up piping hot, juicy hot dogs and chili dogs for years, this place is so nostalgic, especially for the locals who grew up eating hot dogs that were created out of passion, a passion that only the founder can bring every hour of everyday of every-week year after year after year. I'm sorry to say this kind of passion can't be passed down, duplicated, inherited or willed, it doesn't work that way with hot dogs or anything else unfortunately. I so wish I could have experienced Arbetter's when they were at the top of their game, trust me it pains me to be the one to inform those living on the memories of years gone by, this hot dog is not the hot dog that created those precious memories you hold so dear. It's understandable that many make excuses for this worn out shell of what I believe once must have been an unbelievable experience, but it's obvious that passion no longer opens these doors everyday and that can be extremely difficult for a community that has embraced such a iconic business to accept. There isn't much room in today's world for a business that ignores what's obvious to most and remain viable, I'm sorry I can't ignore the run down infrastructure or the aging direct food contact surfaces, the lack of food safety and cleaning programs. I know selling a low margin relatively narrow range of products leaves little room for capital investment, the food I was served was room temperature and that is unacceptable and has nothing to do with taste or quality, it's about microbiology and risk, I don't ever want to feel I got lucky when I eat anywhere, but when the food almost beats you to your table and isn't slightly warm that should raises a flag. Any restaurant that has been in operation in the same place for over 30 years must be doing something right. I am here to assure you that Arbetter's is doing a lot of things right. First off, one should not be discouraged by the minimalistic approach they took to furnishing their establishment. While there is ample seating indoors, along with outdoor seating as well, the wall decor is not much to look at. It is nothing fancy to be sure, however; what they do is extraordinary. I approached the counter and was greeted enthusiastically by Alex and Ambrosia. Both were aptly named in my opinion as Alex was great in her service and Ambrosia was as pleasant as food from the heavens. Speaking of food from the heavens, or in this case European inspired, I ordered one freshly brewed unsweetened tea, one Polish Sausage with everything, and I mean everything on it (see the picture of the receipt, notice glorious grease stains) and one Italian sausage with onions and peppers in order to give the Axis a fair shake. My ever-present dining companion, my mini-me, ordered the childhood favorite of a hot dog with mustard. Ambrosia brought our food out with pleasure and obvious pride, as well she should. The Italian sausage was amazing. It was grilled to perfection so that it had a slightly crunchy skin and a juicy, tender interior. The onions and peppers were sauteed to perfection and added just the right amount of flavor to make it really pop on the palate while the bun was fresh and tasted previously unfrozen, they way they should always taste. The Polish Sausage? What can I say about their Polish Sausage that will adequately describe par excellence on a bun? The chef was showing us her A game for sure that day as the Polish Sausage was grilled to absolute perfection. You know when a meat tube with a natural wrapping is grilled to perfection as there is a slight "snap" when your teeth break through the outer skin and sink into the juicy meat hiding inside. I gleefully "snapped" my way through the whole shebang as fast as I could. By the time my attention was drawn back towards my partner in crime, her plate was spotless. I assume her hotdog with mustard was just as good as my sausages were as she met my gaze with a satisfied smirk and a smile in her eyes. I grew up in cocoa and would go here all the time as a kid. The food was amazing and great to get ice cream after a ball game. I brought my girlfriend to florida for the first time and of course wanted to show her my old favorite places. The location looked exactly the same as when I grew up. No updates but the food is and always has been amazing. If you drove by looking for something to eat and were not with someone who has been there you would probably just drive by. Pulling up I was surprised at the lack of attention to the grounds and building. That lack of attention continued on the inside with both the building and food needing attention. I ordered the hot dog combo which consisted of 2 dogs, fries and a drink for around $7. Fries were very good...hot with a good crispness to them. Same can not be said of the hot dogs. So I have grown up on Arbetter's hotdogs. Maybe they helped shape my love for the hot dogs. I grew up in Cocoa so I would frequently come here for a hot dog, back when Dairy Queen was next door and then hop over for an ice cream. Things have changed since then but Arbetter thankfully has stayed the same. Nothing has changed about the place, which I personally love when I come back to visit. My best friend and I love coming here when I am in town as we both love the hot dogs, corn dogs, and onion rings. They even have a drive thru if you decide you are in a hurry or want to take your hot dogs to go. They do accept cash only which can be tricky in a time when I heavily rely on using my debit card. However, it is not too big of a deal as I can usually scrounge up enough cash or change to cover the inexpensive meal. If you like hot dogs, I suggest you give Arbetter's a try, just don't come here looking for anything fancy as they do what they always have, and they do it well. read more
