Hubbies birthday and a friend invites us to Arbor House...he's been there once before and knows it's not quite a kid friendly establishment. And I mean with that kindness as it's nice to have places that are just for adults getting out..but as we had no sitter for littles, we called and asked if it was ok...a quick silence...but a quicker warm response with a no problem as hubby explains it's his BDay :) She in a good humor says there are two high chairs somewhere in the back. We drive into a residential area and pull up to a small home with parking around it. We meet our friend and walk in. Open the door, first thought was out the door....the smell!!!! Garlic, wine, bread, pasta slaps you in the face. First glance, a small open area with about 10 tables. A pianist in the corner. Floral table cloths, paintings on the wall, proper etiquette table settings and small lit lamps on each table. We're asked if we have a reservation, thank goodness we do as every table is full besides one two seater behind us. Littles fits pretty well at the table without the hassle of them locating those chairs :) Littles is in a great mood, we sit down and I get him all set up with a light snack and his little music player. A lovely gal greets us, gets us going with beverages and an app, chili relleno. They have a great selection of wines and Italian sodas. Lentil soup was up first, amazing warm spice, bits of veggies. Honey rolls were light and a great friend to the soup. Chili relleno was crazy good with a topping of capers and shrimp. Next, salads with freshly made blue cheese, garlic and honey mustard dressings with a plate of garlic bread. I can't get over how good those dressing were....how can anyone even go back to bottled after that?!?! Main entree for me was one of their specials, red snapper with assorted wild mushrooms, al dente steamed seasonal veg, which by the way was cooked perfectly and not overdone. Garlic mash. Same with snapper, supper moist and flakey. Hubby had his favorite beef stroganoff which is no joke!! Tender beef with a tinge of sour cream in their sauce! Our friend had their steak special, cooked to perfection!! Mind you our almost two year old the entire evening has been sitting quietly, munching and enjoying his music, lol! Best night hands down! It was such a great diner, great music, friendly staff, and they were so accommodating! Littles got a thumbs up for great behavior! Make sure to call ahead for a reservation as the entire night there was not an empty table. This is one of the best places in the valley I don't care who you are or what you say, I grew up here my whole life and still frequently visit and I have yet to find a spot that I enjoy as much as arbor house. The fact you can get an amazing locally sourced, fresh made meal for 2 whether it's a special occasion or not, for around $200 bucks with wine included in there, is unreal. It's always a multi course meal, local wines and beers. Don't even get me started on the dessert as well, like wow, if I could live in the containers of the chocolate mousse they make here, I would. Amazing service. The food is literally made the same, every, single, time so I'm never disappointed. I have yet to have a bad experience here and love more than anything contributing to a local place instead of corporate places. This place has so much soul! From the minute you walk in, you know it's something special. The history and love is right there to see in the photographs which grace the walls. The atmosphere is homey and clean. Their care and effort shows in all the food they put out, from the soup, salad with homemade dressing, main dish, and dessert. I ordered their chicken special (that night it was a grilled chicken breast butterflied and topped with a dijon and fresh mushroom sauce). It was off the hook delicious! Our server was part of the family who has owned this restaurant since 1979! She was knowledgeable and friendly. Arbor House portions are generous and it's not the kind of place where your food is perched in the middle of your plate with most of the rest of your plate empty. Go see a play in Ashland or boat on the Rogue River, and then go try this cozy place. The parking is easy! I highly recommend! read more

The staff was extremely friendly but this entire place is dated. I don't think anything in interior has be changed since they opened. The menu seems boring and the food wasn't very good. The biscuits were undercooked and rather boring. The salad was ok and the dressings were probably the best thing all night. I had the pork chop special which was ok. The potatoes were under seasoned but the pork was well cooked. The garlic bread was very dry and sad. My wife had the seafood pasta special. The scallops lacked any sear and were rubbery. The sauce was extremely watery. The cook on the seafood was very uneven with some things being extremely over done and some under. Overall the dish was an unseasoned mess that seemed likes the chef was trying to cook beyond their ability. I honestly have no idea why this place is reviewed so highly. read more

Holy smokes, I think this was quite possibly the best dining experience I've ever had! I'm from the SF Bay Area and I would come all the way back up just to eat at this restaurant again. It's a quaint, charming family-run place that feels like home. The hostess and waitress were so welcoming and attentive. The biscuits with honey butter are delicious, as were the shrimp bisque and salad with homemade dressing. I had the beef stroganoff, which was INSANELY delicious. They don't take cards, which I failed to notice until after I'd already ordered. Luckily I happened to have one random check floating around my purse. I'm so glad I found this gem! read more

Overall, my birthday experience at the Arbor House was Astronomically Smashing!!! This is probably my favorite Italian /Steakhouse so far! If you are going to splurge, this is without a doubt the place to do it. The prices are reasonable and you get what you pay for. The service provided by Leah and Kara was awesome! Kara was very pleasant, very knowledgeable, as well very detailed oriented. Leah as well as Kara was very friendly and even treated us like part of the family. Her energy reminded me of an older sister that just wants to nurture you which makes me appreciate her hospitality even more. They both made me feel very comfortable, happy, and special for my birthday celebration. I also enjoyed the atmosphere which was exactly what I was looking for private, charming but welcoming. From the servers to the kitchen staff, I got nothing but good vibes! I love the fact that it is a family own restaurant and it's all fresh ingredients. Wow, a special experience and a excellent meal. My son moved to Talent during the first lockdown and on a morning walk came across this lovely little restaurant past the main area of town. Everything was closed at the time... but we hoped that the Arbor House would reopen. We had an delicious three course meal last night. The salmon with mango salsa and the chicken with mushrooms were perfectly prepared and homemade salad dressings were such a tasty touch that people who love home cooked food care about. Stumbled upon this place because we were staying at an Airbnb right around the corner. For such a small town this place filled the void for a "need to try" restaurant. Walking upon it, the outside space is very much reminiscent of a fairy land retreat. Beautiful flowers, and over grown bushes set the mood for an amazing experience. Once inside the decor sets you back to New York in the 1920s. The menu was small but had something for everyone. And it comes as a coursed dinner, so you receive a soup, salad (with homemade dressing), and house baked biscuits, before your entree. Needless to say it equates to a lot of food so don't let the prices scare you. Sadly, I was too full to eat much so I stuck with just the mushroom soup and it tasted delicious. This restaurant has stolen my heart. My partner and I decided to try something new for an anniversary dinner, and the entire experience from start to finish was perfect. With our entree we got a small appetizer for two, biscuits, a salad with 3 delicious housemade dressing options, and garlic bread. My partner got the stroganoff and I the lamb shank, both dishes were absolute heaven. We got the chocolate coconut creme brulee as a dessert to split. We spent overall about an hour and a half (almost two hours) there, and never felt rushed. They had a pianist playing live beautiful music the entire time. Each dish came out perfectly planned and the portions were perfect enough to where we didn't feel grossly full afterwards. We decided this is our new anniversary spot, since we have a feeling it will never disappoint. read more

While Arbor House is obviously a local institution, we stumbled across it and were wonderfully surprised. It is located in an obviously converted ranch-style house. It is one of those dying breeds...a real honest-to-god family owned and run restaurant. If I had to categorize the food, I would say it is Pacific Northwest Home-style cooking...at a level of freshness and professionalism that our Mothers rarely dreamed of. The dinners come in three courses. We started with a delightfully fresh gazpacho and a curry carrot soup that was a dream. Then came a small, very fresh green salad with an array of home-made dressings to choose from. Finally, my wife had a halibut that was fresh and done to perfection:lightly pan-fried, but still flaky and moist. I had pork medallions that practically melted in my mouth with a peppercorn sauce. Alas, we had to hurry to an event at the nearby Britt Festival, so had no time to try their deserts. The service was attentive, but we were fortunate that the place was not particularly busy on the night we visited. When we indicated we had tickets for the Festival, they made a special effort to wrap everything up in time. The portions were ample and the final bill was very reasonable. (Warning - It IS a CASH-ONLY establishment!) I would add that there were plenty of families there and with a garden area for the kids to run around in, this seemed like an extremely family-friendly atmosphere. What a great place! Oh my lord was this place delicious!! Worth every penny. My husband and I drove to Ashland from Dunsmuir, CA to find a nice different restaurant to come to and boy did we choose right thanks to Yelp! We came here for our anniversary, it's a total hidden gem. The place is very small, it looks like it was a house! We didn't have reservations and we were greeted and seated right away. They were pretty busy so that might have been why the servers weren't very talkative, but they were quick and efficient. My husband ordered a glass of Pinot Gris I think it was called and he had their seafood pasta on special which he loved!! I got the Mushroom Chicken which was juicy and cooked perfectly, and the mushroom sauce was fabulous! We first were given biscuits and butter(I think they were wheat, so simple yet so delicious), next we were served their potato bacon kale soup of the day which was creamy and yummy, never would have thought kale would go great in potato soup! Then we were served a lovely house salad with 3 types of homemade dressings, didnt care for the honey dijon but I LOVED the spicy french tomato dressing and blue cheese. Next we got our main course with garlic bread and to end the night we got a coconut crem brulee which was made with coconut milk and dairy free. That dessert was my favorite part of the night!! :-) We would be back again, also there was a lovely pianist playing the whole night. read more

Wow, what can you say about the Arbor House that hasn't been said again and again over the years? Hands down the single best place for a meal in Talent. We've been coming here since our 37 yr old son was in kindergarten - when Kitty was cooking in the kitchen and Patrick would come out and hug you tightly before taking your order, and their numerous children would bring water and menus and show you to your table. These days our son brings his own children there, where they can see photos of their great-grandparents on the walls (black and white photos of locals are a major part of the decor and charm). The place is now run by the aforementioned children, who keep their parent's legacy alive by offering up amazing food cooked and served with love. This place is so very special. read more

I cannot really review the full service here since I was treated to a specially cooked private dinner in the restaurant BECAUSE I'M VERY FAMOUS AND I KNOW PEOPLE WHO KNOW PEOPLE. No but really, I do. I grew up in Talent yet had never eaten at Arbor House. Granted, I left right after I graduated high school and up until then my idea of good food was two cheeseburgers for $2 at McDonald's. What an ass. Anyway, I came back into town last month to visit a very sick friend. We arrived late but my best friend, who is a longtime family friend of the Calhouns, had called ahead and asked if there was any food left. We were advised that they were already closed but to stop by and they'd cook something up. Whaaaa?! I know, right? Awesome. As soon as we arrived I was met by warm hugs from Leah and Rory. They sat us right down, poured me a glass of wine, and served us up some gazpacho and bread. This gazpacho was beyond delicious. It had a little but of spice -- enough to give you that bite, but without melting your brain. Just perfect. While we were eating our soup, Rory was cooking up our main course: a seafood pasta in cream sauce. You guys. YOU. GUYS. I'm not sure if this is something on the menu, but you NEED to try it if it is. After dinner we all just sat around and talked. I wandered the dining room looking at the amazing photos on the walls (my friend of course leading me directly to hers) and it just felt like home. I wanted to live there. It felt like a family. These people not only serve up some amazing food, they also genuinely love what they're doing and who they're doing it for. read more

We've lived in Southern Oregon since the eighties. This is the best restaurant in the Valley. The food is consistently delicious with generous portions, and the staff is warm and friendly. We live outside of Ashland and certainly do not mind the short drive to Talent. This is a very quaint and charming family owned restaurant. Their food is outstanding and they have no problem adapting certain menu items to be GLUTEN FREE. Great local wine list too. Make a reservation because it has a small dining room. WOW what a wonderful dinner. I had the petrale sole with capers and it was great. My wife had snapper and she loved it. The soup and salad are first rate like homemade quality but you didn't have to make it. Service is great as they offer you what you need if it's a change from the menu and you don't even feel that you asked for something special. We were so lucky to find this gem of a restaurant when traveling through Ashland. It is a small, family-owned place that has been around for 38 years and the kids and grandkids of the original founders are running and working in the place now. It has a lovely ambience...like having dinner with friends. There was live piano music beautifully played and the staff was super-friendly, attentive and fast. Everyone in our party raved about the food. It started with these lovely garlicky breads that were a cross between a biscuit and soda bread in texture and they were served with honey butter and were soooo good. Next came the soup course....a wonderfully spiced lentil soup that I could have happily eaten for days. This was followed by a beautiful salad with three different house-made dressings left on the table for us to choose from...all amazing but the cantaloupe vinaigrette was to die for....seriously. The entrees arrived and the portions were quite generous and the food was amazing. The meat was tender, the sauces flavorful and you could tell that all were prepared by someone who loved to make people happy with their cooking....and they did. We ended up ordering dessert to go as we knew their desserts had to be wonderful based on what we had eaten so far, but couldn't eat anything else until giving ourselves time to digest. The chocolate and salted caramel mousse held up beautifully to our transporting it and eating it later and did not disappoint. This is where we will be dining on all future trips to Ashland....we are so happy to have found this! It is definitely worth checking out. read more

Everything was delicious! First were homemade biscuits and soup (cream of zucchini with zucchini from their garden!). Next was a salad (most items, including two kids of tomatoes and two kids of cucumbers) also came fresh from their garden. It freshness impacted the taste in a big, delicious way. Finally, we got our main entrees. My friend ordered a marlin special (with a fresh garden berry salsa) and I had the pork chop special. Oh, and both were so special. The pork chop was about 1.5" thick and as wide as my hand! The fresh veggies and garlic mashed potatoes were perfect. The veggies were a little crisp and still tasted fresh. The potatoes had not a lump, but we're not super buttery or overly garlicky. Perfect dinner out. Staff as friendly and the place was beautiful. Love it! read more

Great wine list, a great variety of entrées, way too much food, lots of homemade touches and very willing to adapt for special dietary needs or wants. Excellent food here This is a small family business that cares about ingredients and preperation. I had the t-bone steak and my wife the chicken in sherry and mushroom sauce. Both meals were wonderful, of course we shared some bites,and we can say the best meal we've had all year. Meals come with fresh cooked vegetables, mashed potatoes, biscuits, soup,salad and garlic bread. You don't leave hungry here and everything is freshly prepared. Plus the price is very reasonable. We got lucky and got in on a Wednesday without advance reservation, but I would recommend one. You will not be disappointed. read more

If you've lived in the Rogue Valley for more than, I dunno... ten minutes, and you haven't yet been to Arbor House--- call them immediately and make a reservation. We try to get there half a dozen times a year. Most recently (last Friday), Beautiful Wife ordered NY Strip and I got red snapper, one of the specials. We split an app of fried oysters. The relatively new menus now show the prices (the old "story-book" style menus are gone), and keep in mind that the price of your entree also includes biscuits, salad, soup, and garlic bread. The service is always outstanding. You're treated like a friend, whether they recognize you or not. The decor is very old-school: it's like eating dinner in somebody's house who just happens to have a very large dining room. Steaks have always been grilled perfectly here. The oysters were obviously fresh, and the red snapper was seasoned and cooked very nicely. Salad comes with three house-made dressings, and the soup (split pea with ham) was flavorful and filling. As many times as we've been here, neither one of us has ever finished a meal completely. They package up your leftovers, and they identify and date the boxes. I seriously don't understand why all restaurants don't offer this simple, helpful service. We got a lemon bar (with berries and real whipped cream) to take home. I'm not much of a dessert guy, but they're always good here. There are a lot of high-end, high-profile restaurants in Ashland who wish they could provide the levels of service and quality you get at Arbor House. Do yourself a favor: go ten minutes north to Talent and get the real thing. read more

This place is WONDERFUL! We moved to Talent last Februrary and we surprised by the awesomeness of this little Gem. We called ahead because it was Veterans Day Weekend and wanted to make sure it was open. Thank goodness we did as it is extremely busy and you need to make reservations on the weekends. I absolutely loved the atmosphere. There was even live piano music BE STILL MY HEART!! We went there for our anniversary and couldn't have been treated better! THE FOOD! Can I just say, the food was amazing! Make sure you come hungry, because the full 4 course dinner will fill you up. You will want to eat all the soup and then salad, which comes with 3 homemade dressings that you can pick from. The produce is fresh from the garden, and the service is 5 star as well. We left so happy! Not to mention we got a special scoop of pumpkin pie ice cream to celebrate our anniversary...so sweet! Just make sure to bring your checkbook or cash! We'll be back! read more

This restaurant is my cousin's favorite restaurant when visiting Ashland. She was afraid it might not have survived the fire that ravaged Talent. When staying in Ashland, I found out the restaurant was open. I called to ask if they had outside seating (yes, they do) and if filet mignon was on their menu. The lady answered that she would make sure it was on the menu on the day we visited. Not only was it on the menu, it was so delicious we almost licked our plates clean! The meat came with potatoes and vegetables. The meal also included soup AND salad, rolls and garlic bread. Such a nice change from restaurants that give you a piece of meat and then charge you $10 for a baked potato. The waiter couldn't have been nicer. Thanks to Chowhound (and now hopefully Yelp), I was treated to the BEST DINNER IN ASHLAND. My partner and I had the morels in garlic butter sauce, the pork chops topped with morels and the seafood pasta. All of which was well-prepared, tasty and FRESH. The service was a little odd, but I didn't come here to be treated like a celebrity, I came here to feel at home and east some of the best local food you can find. Everything is locally sourced and freshly prepared. The wine list was short, but impressive, featuring local selections and a few from California and Europe. Just right for the menu. I left satisfied and wistful that this sort of place doesn't exist in MY hometown. tl;dr Reservations for this sought-after place is highly recommended. My sister, mom and I were enjoying our first trip to Oregon which included going to Medford. After yelping a few places to eat, I found this one and it called to me, so we punched in the GPS and headed over. When we got there, we were about an hour early for dinner, so they hadn't opened yet. We knocked, unknowing about the hours, and we're greeted with a smile. The woman who opened the door let us know we were early, but asked us to hold on while she asked if the kitchen was ready. We were shocked, even more so at how truly friendly she was when returning, letting us know they were prepped and ready for dinner and we were welcomed in. Joslyn, our server, greeted us with a warm smile, telling us to settle in. The ambiance was warm, classy and homey, all in one. We ordered and Joslyn got us our first course of the meal: soup. Now, this was onion soup, so some may be thinking simple, right? Wrong. This soup was the BEST onion soup any of us had ever had. Magnificently salted, wonderful depth, and a welcomed smokiness that accented the dish perfectly. Then came the salads, which were accompanied by 3 separate home made dressings, all of which were amazing. Joslyn also told us that they grow almost everything in their garden outside which left us so happy and impressed (as we all are huge foodies). The chef came out, and even talked to us, welcoming us and letting us know that we had a treat coming (the main course). Joslyn returned a few minutes later, bringing all of the food out. I got the salmon (which Joslyn informed us was caught by someone she knew!), my mom got the steak, and my sister the home made curry. For desert, we got the in house made cheesecake, topped with fresh raspberries, with house made whipped cream. I don't even eat sweets, but I did then! All I can say is wow. By far some of the best food we all have ever eaten, even topping places like Rutherford grill in Napa, California. The ambiance, charisma of employees, and quality/ taste of the food makes this a MUST go to place if you are in Oregon.
