We quite enjoyed our visit to Back Porch. They do not skimp on portions, that's for sure. I got the Cobb Salad, which was huge and the other two in my family got steak & chicken and the pork rib dish. The steak was served with a blue cheese butter on top. The side order beans were some of the best I've ever tasted. The pork ribs were well prepared, but a little plain if I'm being honest. Staying in Jacksonville from California and we found this great old school BBQ restaurant by chance. The food was so good & served quickly, you can tell the sides are fresh (pickles awesome) and just fun & attentive service. My husband and I split the BBQ Smoked Chicken Plate- excellent flavor, the bread is amazing. My daughter and her boyfriend split the Pulled Pork Sandwich, they both said it was excellent. Had a great lunch at Back Porch! This place on a weekend around opening I thought would have been much busier based on how good their food is! More people should flock to this business. The chicken sandwich comes with a spicy bbq sauce and choice of side, the brisket bbq plate is fork tender and so deliciously smoked with 2 sides plus bread as well as the ribs. Everything we had was fantastic and well made. You can tell their pitmaster loves their job. I was honestly a little disappointed that greens and mac n cheese were not sides on the menu but the beans, potato salad and onion rings were good too. My husband and I have been coming here most Friday nights for the prime rib special for years. Tonight when they brought our Caesar salad, which used to be exceptional, my husband took a bite and looked puzzled. He took another bite and said, "Oh, no. They changed the way the Caesar dressing is made." I took a couple of bites and said, "Odd. It tastes like vinegar rather than lemon. I hope they haven't changed chefs." Shortly they brought the rest of our dinner. I tasted the beans, which have always been sweet and very spicy -- just delicious. Nope. Not anymore. Not spicy: a little sweet: Boring. Our server came back to check with us to make sure everything was fine. (They have great service here.) I asked, "Did you change chefs?" She looked puzzled and shook her head. She asked us if something was wrong I responded that the beans weren't spicy anymore and that the Caesar dressing didn't taste the same. She said, "We didn't change chefs but we did change distributors." They must've gone down a level or two because the food just isn't the same. Before, it was really special. Now it's mediocre. Except for the prime rib, which we ordered medium rare. It came medium but it was still very good. We would've given one star except for the service and the prime rib. We settled on two stars but with all the other changes we just couldn't give five stars again. Sadly, unless they get this fixed we probably won't be back again. A friend of ours here in the Rogue River Valley calls this kind of thing "shrink-flation". She says they're not willing to raise their prices but they lower their quality and/or their quantity hoping that customers won't notice. We noticed. read more

Everything single thing on the plate (meat, sides, sauce) was lacking seasoning to the point where I felt like stopping halfway through my meal. I had been here years ago and liked it, tonight it was very clear that whomever is running it now does NOT care about this restaurant at all. Sitting in the dining room enjoying conversation with my group only to hear loud F- Bombs coming from the kitchen staff then some guys in the kitchen laughing and loudly talking about some girls "pussy"....Beyond rude, disgraceful, immature and just TRASHY. I've seen teenager boys working Starbucks behavior far better. Food was ok, service was fine but the idiots cooks, kitchen staff were like obnoxious drunks and ruined the evening. The drinks were sub par however - the mule we ordered was way too sweet to start, and then all alcohol after we asked them to remake it. The barbecue meat was well cooked, but the house BBQ sauce is way too sweet for our taste, and not that good. For a barbecue restaurant, we were disappointed with their main dish. I've been a long time attendee of this establishment. It has not disappointed a single time! Today I sampled a few things from the menu. I had the loaded fries, split pea soup, seared ahi tacos, shrimp Mac and cheese, John Wayne burger and a bread pudding for desert. The loaded fries were my least favorite item on this lineup, they were still very good and other members of my party really liked them, and said they would get them again. My only recommendation is that they made a cheese sauce rather than just melted cheese that hardens quickly. Perhaps a cheese sauce similar to that used for the Mac and cheese would work well. The split pea soup was their soup of the day and delighted everyone at how good it tasted! It was nice and thick with chunks of smoked ham. It was the most pleasantly surprising item of the night. For us the seared ahi tacos are a must, I never tire of them, the ahi is cooked to perfection and the pineapple is really hat brings it all together. The shrimp Mac and cheese was the overall winner of the night, the roux was wonderfully done with smoky notes and some caramelized onions in the base, I have no notes. The John Wayne burger was everything I hoped and more. The meat is what truly carries this burger as every good burger should be. I do wish they had options for how the patty was cooked as I usually like mine medium rare. This burger came fully cooked through but I did not mind as the burger was still incredibly juicy and seasoned very well. I don't usually like bread pudding but the one they serve here is soaked in a rum based caramel and is absolutely fantastic. It has a solid consistency and is not too mushy but is not so firm on the surface that it is difficult to eat. Bonus points if you have read this far, the Arnold Palmer here is to die for. I believe it is their iced tea that has some sort of spices in it that distinguishes it from any I've had before. It can be a bit crowded in the busy hours but I feel it just goes to show how great they are. Within minutes we were sat and asked if we needed drinks. I stopped for lunch yesterday at the strong urging of my sister. I was pleasantly greeted and seated by my server. I planned on ordering a sandwich or burger but the lady at the next table just received her order and it looked amazing. She said it was the 3 meat combo and had brisket, pulled pork and ribs piled high telling me that it was the smaller plate but they had a larger plate too. There was so much food the pulled pork was on a separate plate. Since I wanted to take some home I ordered the TX SIZE plate of the same meats. My order came out and I was a bit shocked to see a plate with about half the food of the "smaller" sized order and instead of slices of brisket I had a small pile of pieces that looked like they were remnants from the bottom of the pan. I mentioned this to my server and she said my plate was prepared by the other cook which seemed odd. She asked if I wanted some slices of brisket and returned with a bowl of more pieces saying the brisket was falling apart (a sign of being overcooked) and there were no slices. My dining mate at the next table said she was local and ate here on a regular basis and felt the food today was not their best effort lacking flavor, being dry, and her pulled pork was drenched in sauce. Her assessment was accurate. I had high hopes for some delicious barbecue but felt cheated on having to pay extra for a larger portion that I didn't receive and having the food just be average overall. I will most likely give it another try but stick with a burger or sandwich so I don't have to worry about portion control in the kitchen depending on which cook plates my meal. read more

A few years ago, while driving through the southern part of Oregon, we had stumbled on this great little ranch house restaurant. To my dismay, I had not bookmarked it, nor reviewed it, so finding it once again was a bit of a challenge. But find it we did! And my memory of our first meal there was not faulty. Happily, nothing had changed, they impressed us again. The interior is charming. Rustic decor, the walls were decorated with delightful, rancher inspired memorabilia. The interior is separated into smaller, more intimate rooms rather than one large dining area. Very cozy, friendly, and fun. I recall Mr. B having the Prime Rib the first trip here and being sublimely happy. And while we did not indulge this time around, they do serve it. You can look for it on Fridays and Saturdays. Mr. B chose the Rib Eye steak dinner, which came with soup or salad and 2 sides, onion rings and baked potato. Both were melt in your mouth wonderful. I am not discounting the lovely, perfectly cooked steak, but it was an afterthought (the soup of the day), we ordered a bowl of Friday's clam chowder with corn, that was the eye opener. After we left, I realized we should have gotten more of this. My choice was the Texas Beef Brisket Dip sandwich, made with a thick layer of thick sliced, beautifully smoked, moist brisket, and swiss cheese. Happiness on toasted sourdough...and plenty of it. And let's not forget the Caesar salad. I've had good ones. This one was very, very good. Loved the herbed croutons too. Let's do this again, too! The final triumph was the slice of key lime pie. I am a sucker for a good one. And this one was not only superb, it was a generous slice, enough to bring some home for another day. One day later...Ok...yeah, we returned (blush). This time, fish and chips, and bbq pork ribs. The ribs were fall off the bone great, nice and meaty. The fish I wouldn't return for... rather ordinary. But they still had leftovers of that wondetful chowder. I got my wish. We got smart and brought some home this time! Bring your appetite. Portions are designed for hearty eaters. Also, bring you patience. The parking situation is not so great. Thankfully, the food more than makes up for the frustration. If we lived nearby, we would definitely be regulars here. First time here. I had the jalapeño brisket melt with jojos and my dad had the Gene Autrey burger with jojos. We could barely finish because the portions were huge. The jojos are so good! They are seasoned well and crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Both sandwiches were amazing. The brisket on the melt was oh so good and the bread was nice and thick and some jalapeños toasted into the top. The Au Jus was really good. I love that they bring you ketchup and ranch in a squeeze bottle, so no skimpy little dipping cups. Definitely plan on returning. read more

Our server never came back once to ask if we needed anything or ask how the food was. This is the most important thing for me. I'm a very good tipper, starting at 20% and more for really good service. This lady missed all the points for us. I only left $5 for a $42 bill. I will go back because I liked my steak but hopefully I will get a different server. A side note...when they ask what you want for your sides, they don't tell you if the salad you asked for comes in a small bowl, then it's 2.99 extra but if it comes on a plate, then its included..makes no sense. read more
