A cute little location with everything you want from a coffee shop and more. The baristas are great and know what they're doin'. My Coconut, Almond Mocha Americano (tastes like an almond joy, you should try it) was awesome. The beans are fresh and not as burny as you would find at Starbucks. (Hey the 'bucks has its place, but for really good coffee...you know...I go elsewhere) I also had the pleasure of trying one of the paninis. Oh-my-grilled-cheese-gawd. YUM-O. 3 cheese, Chipotle ranch (I got mine on the side), chips and two pickles (yep, TWO!). Happiness is grilled cheese. The only reason I was even a teensy bit disappointed was the skimping on the side of Chipotle ranch...of course, upon further evaluation, my waistline didn't really need more than a little squirt of the stuff... Friendly service, and nice space. Seems like a great place to hang out and get some work done. Oatmeal is tasty. Looked like a steady stream of regulars, so that speaks well of an establishment. I was disappointed with the coffee and espresso. I have really high standards, and based on reviews this place looked '3rd wave' but sadly the flavor did not reflect this. After being a Starbucks fan for a long time I decided to go somewhere else because of the political choices Starbucks makes and arcedium came highly recommended. Sadly this was nothing like the quality I am used to,ordered a double shot small cappuccino to go took about 15 minutes or longer to get and the taste was like a big milky coffee. Pumpkin spice latte? Psh. Arcedium is advanced, not a bunch of amateurs. They have several pumpkin pleasures to plump up your palate. I will try their chai at some point...but this time of year, I have to admit, I'm kind of a slave to the pumpkin. I'm not even that big a coffee fan, but put pumpkin in it and I'm there. Sorry. Arcedium also has a bunch of delicious baked goods available for sale. I tried a scone and an alfajore sandwiched with dulce de leche. The scone was buttery and light, while the alfajore practically floated away. I hadn't had lunch that day, but I was glad -- I didn't feel bad about taking down both those tasty baked goods. Arcedium's roaster is proudly on display in their main seating area, since they roast their beans in-house. It wasn't going while I was there, but the bar is cleverly situated around the roaster, so you can watch the action whenever it's going. I would totally watch that, so it's probably a good thing I wasn't there at the right time, or else I wouldn't have gotten any work done. The place is warm, relaxed, and inviting. Music isn't up too loud, and even in the main seating area, the acoustics are such that the place can be full of people, yet you can still manage to concentrate if you're trying to work or read. (Or I could, at least.) There's also a separate room that's quieter, where I saw a few other people working away with their laptops. I suspect this room might be available for groups, but it's really cool that this place offers a quiet room. Sometimes, you just gotta get out of the house to do your best work. We came in for a cup of coffee and a breakfast sandwich. What we got was having to wait for an hour and completely rude and dismissive service from the team. 2 attempts to inquire about our order was met with replies of "our kitchen is busy, I am sure it will be out soon." Finally, when it became clear that our order was not going to arrive, we were promised a fast resolution. Another 15 minutes later we received our sandwiches. Horrible experience. read more

After hearing so many coworkers speak highly of this place, I finally decided to trek down to St. Charles to see what it was all about. Right off the bat, I was impressed by the decor, as the coffeehouse felt much more local than your round-of-the-mill Starbucks, yet it was very updated and trendy at the same time. I was a fan, and could see myself plonking down with a computer, if I ever had the need to work elsewhere. I ordered a hot chocolate and double chocolate brownie because why not, right? Both were fantastic. The chocolate was very smooth and rich, with tremendous flavor. Again, thumbs up in this department. The only issue with the Arcedium was the wait time. The average order took at least five minutes to fulfill, making me think this would not be the ideal place to stop when in a hurry. In our case, there was a woman who was clearly very unhappy with her coffee and sent it back no less than three times. Her antics pushed our wait time back to almost 12 minutes. While we were not in a hurry, I have come to expect coffee shops to move much quicker than that, and so I was a little annoyed. read more

Been here twice. I've had a coconut iced coffee mocha drink, and a caramel iced coffee mocha drink, and both are most excellent, especially with the chocolate base. Since this is now my #2 option for independent coffee shops in the *entirety of the western suburbs*, I have to admit, this place is really good. Perhaps it's the fact I've lost half my body weight in water each time I've gotten here. Whatever the case, everything tastes rich, flavorful and just what I need here. And then there's the baked goods. Holy moly, the baked goods. Not quite as flavorful as, say, scones that come fresh out of my oven, but darn close. The scones here are wonderfully soft, have an appropriate amount of blueberries, and come with cream cheese in them. They also have incredibly good bars (7th heaven? I don't remember the name of it) that weren't here today, so I'm guessing that they rotate the menu. Doesn't matter. All of it is good, chewy, and made with real butter. I can't come up with a better compliment than that. Arcedium is worth seeking out if you're in the Fox Valley and just need someplace to hang out and get some great food and drinks. read more

Honestly, right now I'm at Arcedium, drinking coffee. I grew up in a smaller town and was, therefore, spoiled by homey, independent coffee shops. When I moved the Chicago area I expected to see indi coffee houses all over, it's a big city after all. But no such luck. chain coffee places had taken over leaving no room for the little guy. Then I found Arcedium. I was on my way home one weekend in early fall and when stumbled upon it. At first, I was somewhat put off by the business-like feel of the place (I'm used to unfinished wooden floors, creaky chairs, and artsy photography and art), but the feel has grown on me. It's clean and comfy. One weekend I was here in with my boyfriend and we caught one of the baristas working what looked like a fondu pot. but it was like a reverse way of brewing coffee and just about the coolest thing I've seen. (it's called a coffee siphon, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_coffee_maker) The service is friendly; the coffee is good (they roast their own); the sandwiches and desserts are great (I like the Italian sandwich - comes with a pickle and chips). They know how to pull a shot and it seems like there's always people in the shop. It's great. Plus I believe they have an open mic on Saturdays. If you like independent coffee houses, and you like St. Charles, this is a definite must. read more

Go to Arcedium because each espresso shot is manually pulling and the milk is manually steamed to create the perfect foam and reach the perfect temperature. Yes, your drink may take longer than the 30 seconds at Starbucks, but the extra wait is well worth it. Afterall, if you're paying 3 to 5 dollars for a latte don't you want the absolute best?? This used to be my FAVORITE coffeehouse with daily visits for coffee and occasional meeting with friends. However at least 3x during the past month the wait for a beverage has become standing like a herd of cattle for approximately 15 minutes. Sadly it is no longer my "on the way to work" way to start my day. I dont know if it has to do with staff or equipment and I take no pleasure in writing a negative review...however if you need to grab a drink on your way...this may not be the place to start a stress free happy day. Discovered this gem thanks to Yelp. Comfy, cozy, much better volume levels compared to the average noisy Starbucks - good for conversation and working on laptops which many were. Lots of coffee options plus nice selection of light eats. So many choices didn't know what to choose so I let the cashier pick for me. Yummmmm. Disgusting coffee. People in this town must be desperate. I really didn't like what my husband got or what I got. One guy dropped the tea bag and caught it with his foot. I decided to not get tea because of this and told him. The coffee took long too. They need more Starbucks in this town! This coffeehouse is warm and inviting, and a great place to sit and chat with family or friends. The chai tea latte is creamy and deliciously spiced, and the exact type of indulgent antidote you need for a cold winter night or a brisk spring day. I've visited this place a half dozen times over the past three months since it's only a few miles away from my house. The location is extremely convenient, easily accessible by bike or car due to its proximity to the river trail. The shop is clean and the staff is extremely kind. The reason it only gets two stars? I'm not a fan of their coffee. I've tried a variety a their beans brewed via pour over, drip and french press. Unfortunately, they all tasted pretty much the same and they all seemed to lack the body, flavor and aroma I've come to expect. Underwhelmed is probably the best word I can use to describe it. I'm not saying that I won't visit them again. It's a great place to work and the staff is great. However, it wouldn't be my first choice in the area for black coffee. read more

Can't believe it took me over 10 years of coming to Saint Charles to shop and eat to actually discover this gem, and even then it was my uncle, not me! Unfortunately I wasn't hungry enough to indulge in the delicious-sounding sandwiches the menu boasted but I will definitely be back. They had some lovely baked items that pair wonderfully with their coffee and other espresso drinks. Fantastic atmosphere, enormous refillable coffee, and the best French press in the area. There is no reason to go to Starbucks when this place is just around the corner. They have a pastry counter and make sandwiches, but I've never eaten here. I just love the in-house roasted coffee and I love to sit at the u-shaped counter and read the paper. Arcedium is my go-to coffee shop to work on the laptop and meet people. It feels like a hub of people meeting. The coffee tastes fresh and smooth, and as a picky coffee drinker, this is a plus. A world class coffee experience is featured at this establishment. Judging from the big coffee roaster in the middle of the shop it is obvious that they roast their own beans. Being a diabetic, I appreciate the raw bar selection. A raw bar is a square desert selection containing no flour or added sugar. I like the peanut butter and Carib, which is similar to chocolate. Cherry and apricot are featured as well. Even though it takes a little time I recommend a pour over preparation. It's nice to see they take the time and do it right. The decor is nice, but I which some more comfortable seating was available. read more

I Would give one star if I could. Horrible management and meh espresso. Interior decor felt like a dentist's office or a funeral home. The gray walls made me feel borderline suicidal. All of the wall art is cluttered with cringe-worthy expressions about the necessity of caffeine. Clearly the owners had no sense of interior design as it looks extremely homely; living up to Saint Charles stingy reputation. The latte I had was way too foamy and as I said before the flavor of the espresso is meh at best. The menu was uninspired standard cafe fare, nothing really noteworthy or creative. There are much better offerings in and around the Fox Valley area, so clearly some palms are greased at the gazette. I had great expectations as the banner outside said best in Kane County; unfortunately a pretty poor turnout. Sure, it is full quite a bit, but one has to wonder whether that is a symptom of it being the only roaster in the area and it's convenience on the river walk. It joins Blue Goose as a business in Saint Charles that rides on the coattails of the age of their institution and because of that, has lost all sense of innovation and is stagnating. read more

Nice variety of coffee selections. I've had the Aztec Mocha and vanilla lattes. They even have pastries from Cocoa Bean which is a nice bonus. My only complaint is that I've asked for easy soy milk the last few times (seems there's too much soy compared to lattes I've had at other coffee shops), because I want to taste more of the coffee. One time this was done correctly and my coffee was great. But the last two times were a miss. They also sometimes forget that my order is "to go".
