We met our friend at this restaurant for dim sum. We've been here before, usually for dinner, but this was only our second time coming specifically for dim sum after quite a while. The place is usually quiet, which has always made me wonder about freshness due to the slower turnover. That said, these days most dim sum is likely frozen rather than made to order, so it wasn't a major concern. We came on a Wed around lunchtime, and there was essentially only one other table dining. The restaurant was extremely quiet, but they had three servers on staff, so service was very attentive. We ordered about eight dim sum dishes, and everything arrived within roughly 10 minutes. Flavorwise, everything was good. Most dishes we ordered was priced around $7.95 each, which feels a bit on the higher end. They do charge for tea per person, and I noticed they were also promoting a Lunar New Year set dinner. In total, the three of us spent $80 for dim sum, which felt a bit much. After looking at the previous reviews, I wasn't expecting much. I have to say, it's a good place. I went here with my parents and their friends for dinner. They have a live fish tank, so their seafood is fresh (with lobsters, crabs and fish). The place was very clean (with clean bathrooms). I think they have two private rooms too. It was a Monday evening, and there were only two other tables there. But around 8, more patrons came in. We ordered a Peking duck, which I think could have been a little more crispier, but it was good. The soup that came with it need a little more flavor. Their Pepper Steak was delicous. The sweet and sour fish was a fried whole fish (head and tail) that was sliced in a way that's it was still part of the whole fish without bones, battered and topped with sweet and sour sauce. The water spinach was good too. The lobster was a typical Cantonese style dish, which was yummy. I don't know how Dim Sum is, but dinner was pleasantly a good experience. For vegetarians, Cantonese isn't vegetarian friendly, but the menu has vegetarian choices. Cantonese food tend to add oyster sauce to a lot of their dishes, so you might need to inform them to exclude it for the vegetarians. read more

Decent option for dim sum in the Asiatown area. It's all made to order quickly so there are no traditional push carts here. Highlights for us included the taro puffs and the traditional favorites like the rice rolls and shu mai. The food is a tad bit underseasoned for my personal taste. As a fried rice aficionado, I was underwhelmed by the fish roe fried rice (felt like it could have been wok fried longer). Came here for dimsum. Not a huge place so there can be a wait. Food comes out pretty quick. Has all the standard dim sum items. The only downside to the food was it wasn't dry or over fried or anything but a bit on the bland side and we all needed to definitely use the sauces. The Canto cuisine scene is alive and well at Arco, which is a shoddy name compared to its actual Chinese name, Dong Hai (東海), which references the eastern sea. They're among the few dim sum specialty restaurants that offer an all-day option, but is also a Cantonese seafood establishment by night. They've been consistent across the board, bespite being slept on amid all the competition in Chinatown. Looks are deceiving, at least from the outside. While the tall ceilings give the space some depth, the reality is that it's not big enough to be considered a true banquet hall but they've still managed to create a worthy, group-friendly layout (#1). There are a couple of private room options in the back and in classic Canto restaurant fashion, a modestly prominent seafood tank full of lobsters, fish, and crabs. Their dim sum is a tinge pricier than some restaurants, but the all-day option is very appealing for folks who can't seem to get here before 2pm. Their pan fried turnip cakes (蘿蔔糕) have nice crispy edges with little bits of Chinese sausage (臘腸) mixed in between. Their tofu skin roll (腐皮捲) as well as their pork sparerib rice noodle (排骨腸粉) are also worthy contenders, and the fried spring / egg roll (炸春卷) has a nice crunch, accompanied by a sweet dipping sauce. I also think highly of their sticky glutinous rice (糯米飯) and their unwrapped rice dumpling (糉) is very hearty while being very carby. Shrimp dumplings (蝦餃) and siu mai (燒賣) are somewhat average at best, but despite not looking very presentation worthy, the bbq pork puff pastries (叉燒酥) are quite tasty. Their Cantonese dishes are quite underrated. They serve a mean seafood abalone soup and their best options will definitely be from the seafood tank. Whether it's ginger scallion lobster or salted egg yolk crab, it's going to be of very decent quality. I was impressed with their scrambled egg with black fish eggs (黑魚子炒蛋) and the more popular shrimp version (蝦仁炒蛋) as the eggs were smooth and silky, which went perfect with the rice on the table. The Canto version of mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐) is wonderfully spicy and has a good amount of ground pork and chunky tofu bits to make for a good comfort meal. Their simple steamed grouper (蒸石斑魚) is still one of their best dishes, despite the higher market pricing. Like most Chinese places that cater to the authentic palates, the service can be warm, hot, and cold. I find the staff is a bit more chipper during dum sum hours, but the evening experience is always a gamble. While I'd reckon there are more quality Canto places out there, this is a perfectly suitable option for a low key meal where crowding, parking, and portions are never an issue. ____________ (#1) A must in all proper dim sum places. read more

We came in for an early Sunday dinner to celebrate the new year around 4:30pm. There weren't any other diners in here sadly but that didn't deter us. I love coming to get a family style meal at Arco! They have refined their menu to a front and back laminated with photos one page. No more flipping through a big menu yay. The waitress came around and was attentive as we took a few minutes deciding what we want to devour. The inside is clean and calm ambiance with a touch of class From the beautiful chandelier hanging. We opted for the sweet and sour fish, salt and pepper ribs, and beef with Chinese broccoli hold the noodles. We each got a side of white rice that was just enough. I believe you can ask for more as they do not provide the rice in the red self serve container. Eating and catching up is always a highlight for us yelpers. Arco has been a long standing restaurant serving up a bit of everything in Chinese cuisine. While specializing in serving seafood fresh from their fish tanks like king crab and flounder, they also serve an array of other dishes including dim sum and family style favorites. The menu is extensive and has something for everyone. They also offer a prefix menu for large parties if you want to go that route. We started off with tea and fish soup appetizers followed by various dishes. As for the entrees themselves, they were very mid. Not many dishes stood out to me as absolutely delicious. The big pork ribs probably were the best entree. We ordered their famous sweet and sour fish, but the fish was very fishy. The only other item I really enjoyed was the salted egg dim sum dessert! The runny yellow sweet filling was delectable. One of the great things about this restaurant is that you can reserve rooms for large parties, and they have several available. Just make sure to call ahead, especially for holidays. Service was okay. I and others ran out of water before asking for a refill. A 20% gratuity was automatically added onto our bill due to being a large party. We notice the customer service is a hit or miss. We sometimes get an abrupt waitstaff with a non-smiling face. The food is still good but a little on the salty side. The restaurant is a decent size with old style decor. The biggest con here is they sometimes charge for each bowl of white rice, which is ridiculous when you are located in Chinatown. Almost all Asian restaurants usually do not charge for rice when entrees have been ordered. If the food is on the saltier side, it also makes sense customers need to pair it with rice. read more

Very classic dim sum place right in the heart of Bellaire. I usually go here because the food is made fresh. This visit when I went they were out of the ha cause which I was very sad about. I've had it before though and it's very good. We also had the siu mail, salted egg tofu, and taro puff. You could tell everything was made well and it was also delicious. I can't say that I am an adventurous eater, but tonight I stepped out of my comfort zone. Nestled in the heart of Chinatown, Arco serves up the most interesting foods for the curious and familiar palates. From your traditional fried rice dishes and egg rolls, to duck, crab rice, and various noodles plates, there is so much to choose from. I came with a group celebrating the end of the academic semester so there was lots of food and wine to share. I tried duck for the first time here (better late than never) and though it was not my favorite it wasn't bad. I also tasted what was most familiar to me...egg rolls (their egg rolls were a little on the smaller side with not much filling and flavor, I was a bit disappointed). My main entree was their sweet and sour fish (I think may have been a Whiting), now this was delicious!! 10 out of 10 recommend. I devoured this! It was the perfect balance of sweet and sour with the sauce, and the fish was fresh, and cut up in a way that made eating it with chopsticks a breeze! The tea was lovely and the wine was beautiful (Merlot). My group sat in one of their two VIP rooms, it was a bit tight with such a large table, but where we sat had a glass top "lazy susan" which made sharing and passing food and drinks to each other very easy. Prices of their dishes were comparable to other Asian Seafood restaurants so it wasn't bad. The atmosphere is average at best, no real Asian inspired ambiance to set the mood, it was just regular. Inside the main dining room though there was plenty of seating inside, there is no seating offered outside. If I could change anything it would be the tired gray seat covers they use on the chairs and booth seats. Awful. And they could benefit from some organization of inventory that is laying stacked by the door (not sure if they recently got a shipment in and didn't have time, but it unsightly). They should also consider cleaning up and organizing the stacked chairs with the gray covers and boxes of wine inventory, moving them out of the waiting area and maybe putting them in the back to give customers a clean place to sit comfortably. The clutter is what brings what could have been a pleasant looking restaurant Interior down a notch. On the plus side they do have a live tank of fresh crab and other seafood for viewing in the back of the restaurant which is cool, in addition to a wine display rack nearest their entrance. Their waitstaff was very pleasant and did a great job taking care of all of us. Shoutout to those that prepared the food, we kept them hopping with all of our orders. Spectacular. This establishment has been around for a very long time, and I've dined in 10+ times with a pleasant experience every time. The Peking Duck is solid and one of the best in Houston. I always get the Walnut Shrimp; perfectly cooked and mild seasoning. I also usually get the flat rice noodle with beef and fried squid. Each dish is delicious in its own way and comparable to Tan Tan in terms of flavor. Service is good. They take reservations and always have the table actually available when we show up. This past time they brought the wrong dish, we called it out, and they immediately took it back and soon brought us the right one. No hassle, no blame, no hard feelings. Ambiance is nothing amazing. Somewhat small space but clean and ample seating. Rock on, Arco. Keep up the good work. I'll be back at least a few times a year. read more

The seating area isn't big but not small.... Like 8 small tables and 4 huge tables and 2 party rooms. They have a wine closet. Their family style dishes were nut allergy friendly! A very family style restaurant, I went with a group of 11 people for a holiday dinner. They have a curated "prix fixe" menu for the holidays that consists of a 9 course meal. There are some private tables in the back that fit around 10-12 people. All of the food was pretty good. I would say the highlights are the Peking Duck, the Lobster, and the Yee Mein w/ Abalone. We didn't get any white rice or water on the table, but I think someone could have asked. Been coming to Arco for a few years now, always an enjoyable experience for the most part. Located in the H-Mart Plaza, parking can be a bit of a pain on busy weekends. The restaurant itself is decent size, with a number of private rooms on the left and good number of seating for all types of tables. Service is typical chinatown efficient. Not necessarily friendly, but we're hear for good food and not fine dining. Ordered salt and pepper pork ribs, mapo tofu, beef chow fun, and some dim sum. Food came out within minutes nice and hot. Mapo tofu decent flavor, not too saucy. Beef noodles were great, very filling and tender beef. However, the chop could be cut up into smaller bite sized pieces. Salt and pepper pork was a bit on the small size for the price, but great flavor with plenty of onions and peppers. The dim sum is still some of the best in Houston and highly recommended. 4 stars as pricing has gone up and portion sizes can be slightly better. read more

So many people recommended Arco Seafood Restaurant 东海海鲜酒家 for a fancy dinner setting. Before I bring people here, I need to check it out myself. On my first visit, I ordered a Cordyceps Flower Pork Ribs Soup 虫草花排骨汤, egg tarts 蛋挞, soupy dumplings 小笼汤包 and a pot of chrysanthemum tea 菊花茶. Egg tarts were warm and flaky. I believe they were freshly baked. Soup was very flavorful and it had tender pork chunks. Dumplings got me wonder. The shape was like small pointy hats. And, the wrap was doughy and kind thick for me. I can taste the soup as I bit into them. But I can't produce the flow to show you. In my honest opinion, Arco has the top-of-the-line seafood dim sum variety. Normally, you can get dim sum for $15 per person on the average in Chinatown. But the quality and experience are noticeably different. To bring my friends to a new restaurant, I pay close attention to details. First stop, I visited the WC (vocabulary for wash closet in Hong Kong). The restroom was clean and feel more luxurious than other restaurants in Chinatown. Then, the décor has a close resemblance of a traditional Hong Kong dim sum restaurant. Finally, I looked around for customers expressions. They all seem to enjoy the food, because I did. On my second visit, I ordered from the Dim Sum Menu. I was really curious about Salted Egg Custard Bun 流沙包 and Rice Noodle Roll w/Abalone Sauce 鲍鱼肠粉; I also ordered the jumbo abalone chicken clay pot soup from daily special menu as recommended by the waitress on my first visit. Ok. abalone was not big, but the soup was fantastic. It sure worth my $13.95. Custard bun was out the steamer. So, the filling was really hot, salty, sweet and runny. Rice Noodles was fresh but the sauce barely coated every surface. Because of the freshness and common interest of the other dishes, I decided to host my first party here. It was a very memorable one. Because Arco has the dishes that people are familiar with and they are made fresh. Service was pretty good. I am still learning their names. Family friends recommended Arco and we decided to give it a try over Labor Day weekend for dim sum + some regular menu items. The service leaves much to be desired. When we arrived mid-day there was a line of people and no one had taken names to start a waiting list for seating. It was apparent that you needed to be in line to hold your (and your party's place). After a 20 min wait we were seated at a large table and waited another 20 minutes to place an order. That's where the service started to run in the opposite direction. It was weekend dim sum so we marked what we wanted on a single page (pictured), and it all came ... within 10 minutes of each other. Between our dim sum dishes and regular menu dishes, our table was over flowing and chaotic. Once our table's lazy susan was full, they continued to bring dishes and put them on the table between diners, wherever there was room. There was no checking in to see how we were enjoying the food of if we needed a refill on water or to bring us any rice for our entrees. Dim sum stars were the eggplant, fried tofu with shrimp, and egg tarts. We were excited to try the soup dumplings (placed 2 orders); they were missing soup and had thick wrappers, more like a dumpling than anything special. The Peking duck was good but not as great as Peking Cuisine. After all dishes had been around the lazy Susan a few times and they could see some empty plates, they brought the check. We always love coming here and are regulars throughout the year. From gnoshing just the two of us to large 13+ people family dinners, there's a good time to be had here. The manager and staff here are always very nice and friendly. Take a minute to ask how they're doing, and like just about anyone, they'll return the courtesy with kindness. A few of our favorite dishes: Typhoon Shelter Eggplants - great fish to eat there, not as great as takeaway unless you live/work close by. Crispy, airy, and packs a Tyson-like uppercut of flavor. Tamago Tofu - a silky smooth, almost buttery tofu that is just brilliant over rice. Fried sweet and sour fish - fried to perfection after a scalloped-style filet job to maximize the crunch, then add the sweet and tangy sauce. Pro tip...eat the fins too, when fried like this, they're like tater chips. Crab and rice steamed in lotus leaf - a little pricy, but worth it. Fresh dungeon was crab wrapped in rice and seasoning, in a Christmas pouch of lotus leaf which imparts a delicate flavor to the whole dish. Salt and pepper shishamo - a sardine-like fish fried whole and eaten whole, tossed in a savory salt and pepper concoction. The bits of onion, scallion, and garlic on this dish is heavenly over hot rice. If eating whole little fish is too adventurous for you, try the squid or pork rib versions instead. Lamb with black pepper - if you like lamb, get this dish. It's like the black pepper beef in a lot of restaurants, but has that extra hot of flavor from good quality lamb meat. They do charge you a nominal amount for each serving of rice, which I honestly don't mind. I hate wasting anything, especially food. So this is a great way to pay just for what you eat. read more

Great spot for dim sum off Bellaire, a place not very crowded or maybe known? Dining room is a bit small and the food is ordered off a sheet of paper, not by bringing a cart around. The food is fresh, tasty, and much better than other dim sum restaurants in Houston. Definitely a gem of a place and you can taste the authenticity of the food. Only downside, don't expect that good of a service. I had multiple questions, no answers. Couldn't get iced water. I ordered the soup dumplings, maybe one of the worst I had. The soup was missing, tasted like it came from a box. I tried to tell the waitresses but she basically said, shut up and eat it. Also never got the wrapped Chinese donut dim sum dish. Rude service. We came here for a dim sum lunch because of all the great reviews we saw. However, when we got there, it was nothing short of horrible. When we first tried to get our party in line at the entrance, the lady completely ignored us. After waiting and getting seated, no service such as asking for drinks was given, and instead, we had to ask the waiters for a pot of tea ourselves. We ordered and no food came out for about 45 minutes. After our first dish came out, it took about another 30 minutes for the rest to come. Again, waiters were standing around doing nothing this entire time, not even going around and refilling drinks even though multiple tables were out. We came in at 12:45 P.M. and left at 3 P.M. From observing, I could see that this restaurant treats their customers differently. I noticed that their "VIP" customers in the restaurant's special rooms received great service with all their dishes delivered hot. Meanwhile in the main dining room, other tables received the complete opposite. I don't know what the deal is with the management and waiters of this restaurant, but from the quality of the food and service, it seems like this type of behavior has been going on for a while. I highly do not recommend this place for any type of occasion. Went here with my family after church on Easter. We were sat with no wait. We ordered dim sum and the pecking duck. The food was great, the service however was horrible. Our server kept walking away from us. They didn't get my full order so we waited a long time for the duck because it was never put in. We had to ask 3 different servers to bring out the rice my daughter requested. The server never came back to check on us, we had to keep flagging her down. Arco Seafood restaurant is located on the same side as Hmart in Bellaire. I only started going there in the last year or so. For some reason, my extended family always chose to go elsewhere, so it was never in my radar. Unlike other dim sum places, this place serves it all day, not just weekends, and you fill out what you want instead of hoping for what you want to come by. Hot tea in a tiny cup is a must if you eat dim sum, plus it's refillable. I'm pretty basic when it comes to dim sum, so I usually just get the Shrimp Ball, Rolled Shrimp, Har Gow and Taro. The egg tarts are pretty good here too. I thought the service was decent. I've never had to wait for a table either, but there was a line forming by the time I left. As always, this place delivered. Ended up coming here for dinner on a weekend. It gets busy but food is worth it and service is always excellent. The sweet and sour fish is a favorite, it's beautifully presented with its sliced fried fillets and red sauce. Crispy, soft, and very satisfying. Tried something new this time, the crab special. Was a little disappointed that the sign says "Everyday dim sum" yet when we tried to order it wasn't available. Not a big deal as their menu is filled with tons of other items. It's family-style so portions are generous and the price is perfect. From our order the things I would recommend are 1. Sweet & Sour Fish 2. House Fried Rice 3. Chicken Corn soup I'm knocking some stars off because our server could've been a lot nicer when taking our order and the dimsum was not available. Service and time to wait to be served or even get food is a 1...if that. It made a 3 because the food is decent and it's clean. We've been here before and the last time I was there I said I wouldn't come again bc we waited over 30 min to get order taken and almost an hour for food. We had asked the server several times when the food would come and he yelled it's coming! Later we found out that the order was never even placed This time we got in and order was taken quicker. It was not busy and many tables were open. However it took almost 30 min before we got broccoli and waited another 20 min for a couple buns. The servers, male and female, instead of excusing them selves pushed their body while shooing us to the side with their hand to pick up or place down food. At one point the waiter pushed so much she made the water tip over bc she was rushing and water went all over the table and part of the food. She didn't apologize or bring new dish. It's chaotic and slow service and the servers clearly don't care about anything or anyone. I won't come again. read more

came here despite all the reviews on poor service but wanted to try it out for myself. sadly I have to agree. very poor customer service -- had to remind them to refill teas, water, more napkins the restaurant it self is quite smaller than most other dim sum places but they were quite busy. we waited 15-20 minutes for a table and there was always a wait. the food was either very salty or very bland -- no in between. things to notate: -the rice noodles were extra thick compared to most dim sum places. -short ribs lacked flavor and was extra fatty -the fried items were really greasy nothing spectacular. the food was expensive for quality we got. What happened?? Used to be my staple for food. Haven't gone back for 3 mos because of the increase in menu food prices and the dishes shrinking in size. Well, went back today still had their managers from before. However, menu changed. No pictures like the menu before. Got some dim sum ...cha siu bao very little meat. The siu mai ok use corn instead of masago. The seafood fried noodle ok scallops old and chewy so did not eat it. I really think they got a new chef and maybe dim sum chef only coming on weekends. The table and everything else is clean. Not sure if I will be coming back until things change. read more
