We ate so well here because we ordered much more food than we could possibly consume for the 5 of us and the food was just so good. Also, the service is phenomenal, but we also speak Cantonese. D5. 化皮燒肉 ROAST PORK If you ran a knife across the roast pork skin, you would hear the perfect crisp crackle. Each order comes with an appetizer-sized plate of roasted pork belly. The crunch on the skin was phenomenal, like a dense and crispy chip. Imagine if they made snacks out of crispy pork skin. The ratio of fat and lean pork meat was perfect, so juicy and rich, yet soft and tender. The roast pork is phenomenal. We loved it. D1. 燒鴨 ROAST DUCK The roast duck skin was flavorful and juicy, complemented by the tender duck that was fresh. The soy sauce-based marinade was delicious, and this is a classic Cantonese BBQ option that you cannot go wrong with. K15. 港式咕噜肉 SWEET & SOUR PORK HONG KONG STYLE This isn't my favorite dish, but the pork was crispy and held a lot of the sweet and sour sauce. I enjoyed it, but it pales in comparison to the others. Still, another safe Cantonese classic that I would recommend. P6. 鞋菌豆腐煲 TO-FU W. MIXED MUSHROOM IN CLAY POT They served it to us in a glass plate, but it was still delicious. Arguably, I think this was my favorite out of all the dishes because of how simple it is, and it's full of mushrooms and vegetables! There was a strong "wok hay" flavor, and the fried egg tofu were hot (it burned the roof of my mouth, but I did not care), soft, and incredibly jiggly. I loved the mushrooms and vegetables which was braised with the sauce. Big yum all around, this one hit home and one of my go-tos. F2. 菜炒牛肉炒河 SAUTEED FLAT RICE NOODLE W. BEEF & VEGETABLE Not a single vegetable in sight, unless you count the green onions and bean sprouts. This is probably one of the most well-known Cantonese classics with its strong "wok hay" flavor. The rice noodles had the perfect texture and there was a generous amount of beef stir-fried in. While it's many people's favorites, it's always a bit too oily that I would like (and that oil is almost necessary for good flavor). I recommend it if you want a safe staple, but I would encourage trying something else. We basically ordered the Cantonese classics and it was so delicious and more than what the 5 of us could finish. I flew from California to Houston . I went to Wing Kee Restaurant to try their food. I ordered Snow Peas vegetables with garlic. The vegetables were old and chewy. I couldn't even swallow them. I had to spit them out onto a napkin which required me to remove the thicker stems which were hard and chewy. I complained with the waitress about it. She told me that I should come on Wednesday instead of Friday because the vegetables are younger and fresher. I also ordered a crispy sea food chowmein noodles. They were so bland and had no taste. Next, I ordered roast pig. The roast pig is ok. Not bad. When I ordered the roast pig, along with the 2 additional dishes so I can eat at table, the waitress told me that I can not eat the roast pig there and was told that the roast pig only for take out. I complained to the manager and he told me that the waitress didn't know. No apology at all. When I left, I didn't want to give any tips. This is the worst place I have ever known and never happened in my life, the first and last time I have been here. I called to order a roast duck and left my phone number, I and the person who received my call agreed to make an appointment in 10-15 minutes I would be there, 10 minutes later I came and they told me that they were out of ducks and could not sell them to me because they were out of ducks. Arguing, they said they were afraid that I wouldn't come to get it, so they sold it to someone else. I ordered take out and my fiancé went in to pick up the food so I'm not sure how it looks like inside. We were recommended to get BBQ from a friend. When called to place an order we were told they didn't have any BBQ pork left so we went ahead and just ordered a whole duck. When my fiancé went in to pick up the food he saw a HUGE pan of BBQ pork so he once again asked to order a pound, this time since it was out they then said they have it. Came here for the famous roast pork and was in no way disappointed - it easily lives up to the hype in my eyes. I have no idea how they get the skin so crispy while the meat is so tender and juicy...pure magic. Since we felt a little guilty about just eating tons of pork for our meal, we switched it up for a few items and ordered their beef flat noodles and crispy tofu. Everything was excellent and served family style so it was easy to try a variety of items. Their menu is huge so it should not be hard to find something to satisfy everyone in your party. When it comes to Chinese BBQ, my heart... errr I mean, stomach, will always belong to "Long Sing" (which is now "Siu Lap City" in midtown). With that said however, Wing Kee has climbed its ranks on my list through several years of consistency and good quality. I hope they keep it this way too! I give high recognition for the following items: 1. Chinese Crispy BBQ Pork (Siu Yuk) - The skin is always SUPER crispy and crunchy. The meat is well seasoned, moist, and tender. That bit of fat between the meat and crispy skin... worth it. The rest of their Chinese BBQ meats are good here too, but this one really stands out among their local competitors. You just can't get the same amount of crunch when you bite into their roasted crispy pork skin. 2. Salt and pepper fried squid - It's so good! It's my favorite fried squid dish in China Town. Confucius used to be great, but lately it's been under seasoned. R House is ok, but it's not as crispy. Crown Seafood is delicious, but I have to say, Wing Kee beats them all. We have been ordering this dish from them for a good while and it's never been a let down for us. Goes perfectly with just steamed white rice. 3. Gai Lan with Beef stir fry - This is a really simple dish but it brings balance to the entire set of entrees to pick on. You get super tender beef that is not overly salted or seasoned, over a bed of healthy greens (Gai Lan). To me, the flavor is a welcoming reminder that there are no limits to a palate - the flavor is by far not extreme on any side of the spectrum... it just has a simple home flavor and it tastes good. As of 2020, the price here has remained fair. They offer lunch specials (smaller portions) or their normal menu. Nothing fancy. If there was a term for "Chinese Soul Food", then Chinese BBQ should definitely be in that category. Wing Kee is definitely onboard that train too. Probably the best cantonese style restaurant in town. Yep, I said it. This is a small restaurant tucked into a center off of Bellaire and Wilcrest. There are maybe a maximum of two servers at any one time and it offers a nice cozy feeling. They have a nice selection of lunch specials on the weekdays and the portion sizes are quite nice. My go to is usually one of the many variations of fried rice (salted fish with chicken, chinese brocolli with sausage, etc.), chow fun with chinese brocolli and beef, or house special chow mein (topped with a mix of shrimp, chicken, fish, and veggies). If you want a dish to go with rice, try the salt and pepper squid. This comes with sauteed green onions and jalapenos. They also have a little area that serves fresh chinese bbq: roast pork, roast duck, and char sui. They make the roast pork in house and it is some of the very best in town. Super crispy and moist. Stop by on a weekday and take advantage of the lunch specials. You can try lots of dishes and won't break the bank. read more

My mom is obsessed with this place so when I flew down to visit this time around, she kept pressing me to try it. I let her take over and order since she's a local and it's her favorite spot. We got a pound of bbq pork char siu and a whole duck. The char siu was my favorite. It had the right depth of flavor and good lean-to-fat ratio. The texture was the elasticity I was looking for and not at all dry. It was a little too well-glazed as it was on the sweeter side (if you look at my picture of the char siu, the sauce is mostly glaze). My impression of the duck was the most unexpected - all the other ducks in the area have disappointed me but this one met my standards. It had crispy skin and the meat was savory enough without the accompanying soy sauce, and most importantly, it was not gamey. The chef cut up a whole duck for us straight out of the oven (the bird was so piping hot that steam came out as the knife went in). He's a real MVP for holding that duck like pain receptors in his hands don't exist (that's how you know if an Asian chef is a pro - when heat/burns feel like nothing to them). I have no complaints about the duck except it was slightly undercooked. The chef should have allowed the duck to rest prior to cutting. Resting is often overlooked but it's actually a crucial part of the cooking process (it doesn't just apply to steak). This is because when you rest meat, it continues to cook... which is why the ducks hanging on display for hours were fully cooked whereas the one he gave me fresh out the oven wasn't. Having tried four other popular Cantonese bbq spots in Houston, Wing Kee surpasses the bar previously set by all the other bbq restaurants I've tried. I say this with confidence as their meats can compete with what you can find in NYC's Chinatowns. Despite the strong community of Cantos in Houston, I've always felt the cuisine was underrepresented in one of the largest Chinatowns in the US. Wing Kee (新榮記) came onto the scene late last year and made some initial noise for their take simple take on Cantonese comfort food. The few times I've gone, it's been pretty empty. The ambiance isn't much to write home about but the layout is just right for small to medium sized groups. Items on the menu are listed in both Chinese, Vietnamese, and English, which is just right for the makeup in the area. Some photos would probably be helpful for first timers. Their lunch specials are a great way to start. For less than $6, one can choose a myriad of dishes ranging from beef and seafood options. The value is excellent and the portions are solid. Go slightly bigger with the house specials which are $6.25 and up. Food wise, they've gotten better over time. Initially they weren't doing the best job seasoning their food but they've managed to figure things out. The variety has gotten better as well, as they've expanded their menu and now offer a decent selection of Cantonese BBQ (#siuyuk). Their baked dishes over rice, roast duck + other canto roast meats, scrambled eggs with shrimp, beef brisket anything and fried rice dishes have yielded the best results so far. I haven't been so thrilled with their take on mapo tofu, many of their fried noodle dishes, blackbean clams, claypot rice, or soya chicken. Service has been good so far. Once I got home, i opened up the boxes, and they literally gave me scrap bone pieces for the duck and barely any roast pork. I attached the picture of the meat before I reheated it when i got home.
