HEADS UP- this is NOT a restaurant‼there is one chef who sets up a "pop-up" in various locations. We were not aware of this at first so we walked to two different locations before finding the right one, which was at Mayes Oyster House on Polk St. Finally came across the correct location on his Instagram story at @arepasenbici. Now we know to also check his website at arepasenbici.com *WAIT TIME- our party of 3 arrived right around 7 pm. We were a bit confused upon arrival since there were no other customers, only a bartender on FaceTime and a DJ jamming out by himself in the corner. We were worried that we went to the wrong place again, but it turns out that majority of the chef's customers just orders ahead online then picks up to-go. After asking the bartender if this was the right place to find arepas, she told us to walk towards the back and meet the chef in the kitchen. Then the chef handed us barcodes to scan and we did not have to wait extremely long for our orders but it also wasn't super fast since he had other orders to take care of. *AMBIANCE- fun, loud, "going-out" type of vibes at this specific location since it is also karaoke night on Wednesdays starting at 7 pm. *QUALITY- great! This was our first time trying our Venezuelan food and definitely won't be our last. Although we have no other arepas to compare it to, we can confidently say that it was prepped with great care and skill. Love how there's also a vegan option, which is the Dom arepa! *CUSTOMER SERVICE- great! The chef is friendly and highly personable, which definitely plays a role in us wanting to support him even more! He even surprised our friend with 2 pastellitos after finding out she didn't order some when both my fiancé and I did, which was very nice and inclusive of him. *RESTROOM- bathroom available inside at this specific location. *OUTDOOR SEATING- available, but no outdoor heaters. *PARKING- no private lot available, best bet would be metered street parking on streets surrounding Polk like Bush St which is free after 6 pm! read more

Ordered delivery to Oakland on one of their East Bay delivery days and I was so impressed by how great the meal was! It arrived warm, fresh, and ready to eat, but was also great warmed up as leftovers. I grew up in the Bay Area but recently lived in Miami for work, and fell in love with arepas, teqeños, and pastelitos there, and was so excited to have this food here in the Bay Area. Ordered the special arepas box which came with two arepas, 4 tequenos, and 2 pastelitos for $25. I also ordered a side of aioli and guac sauce. I received an email after ordering that said I should pick up the order from 891 Post street in 45 minutes. I went there but it obviously wasn't the correct location. Victor called me asking where I was and told me I should meet him at Ofarrel street in front of Nico's Pizza. This was a bit confusing but no big deal. I would just warn you that the email you receive may not have the correct pick up location. Victor showed up carrying orders for the day in one of those carrying cases for hot food. I kind of felt bad for him- cooking all these orders himself then getting out there on foot or bike and delivering them too? It just seems like a lot to do. Anyways, on to the food. I miss Pica Pica- that was my go to arepa place- but it shut down permanently during shelter in place. I am so happy to say that these arepas were equally good and less expensive. The portions are generous and the tequenos are better. The only thing I really miss are the free sauces from Pica Pica. I live on the Peninsula and if Victor was out here I would probably get takeout from him at least once a week. Loved my meal. (Side note- you should find a way to deliver out here and promote the fact that arepas are gluten free since all the yuppy foodie gluten free vegan blah blah blah people seem to live in Palo Alto and the vicinity) Give this place a try! It's really tasty, great portions, and a good deal. I will make this place a regular order when I'm craving arepas. What a delight this food is. The food was flavorful and fresh tasting. This could have been greasy, but it wasn't. It was delicious. The first thing I thought when I took a bite of the arepas, was MMMMMMM! Yes! The Pabellon had a nice combination of shredded beef (not too much not too little), cheese, black beans, and the most deliciously cooked plantain. It was just right. The meal also came with tequenos were wonderful. It's similar to a mozzarella stick, except the outer pastry was smooth and light, instead of breaded and greasy. I really loved the mini guava empanada. I could have eaten those like popcorn. Round it all off with a coca cola and you have a delicious meal. Thank you Chef Victor. It was delicious. I can't believe I have went this long without trying this place! I got the YES meal from the Yelp Elite Event this past weekend and was in awe about how great the food tasted! Arepas En Bici is located inside Tonic SF on Post and Hyde St. I called ahead to place my order and Victor, the business owner, told me that I could text my order in. I went ahead and did that and he gave me a time for me to come and pick it up. As part of the YES meal, we got two arepas (I got the Dom and Bella), 2 tequenos, and 2 guava pastelitos. It was all packed up nicely and was easy to carry back to my place. I had my Dom arepas for lunch and was immediately blown away about how flavorful (and filling) it was! Every single flavor meshes so well together, its unlike anything I have tasted. For dinner, I had the rest of the meal, which included my Bella arepas, 2 tequenos and the guava pastelitos. I would go back for the tequenos alone! They are like cheesy breadsticks but so so much better. The guava pastelitos made for a tasty dessert to wrap up the entire meal. We went to San Francisco for the day, and I was craving arepas, so I googled a place and found Arepas En Bici. I didn't read the info or website as i had assumed it was a takeout place, but after driving by a few times (and not finding it) I decided to call. Victor was incredibly friendly, and explained briefly about his business. I placed an order online, and shortly after went to pick it up. Food was well packed and well presented. He does use the same box for more than one item, but the boxes are big, and I particularly didn't have an issue with the food sharing space. The Arepa de Pabellón was insanely out of this world. The taste of the the shredded beef was excellent, and the arepa was really tasty, and filling! The tequeños were good! My son ate a few and then kidnapped the rest for "later".... I only got to take a bite of one, because he liked them a lot. The Guayaba Pastelitos were really nice too! I did think that it could have had a little more cheese, but they were truly delicious. The cachitos were delivered to my home, still warm...so soft and flavorful, definitely took me back to my childhood and the panaderías in my neighborhood downtown Caracas. Full disclosure: I'm have no idea what an arepa is supposed to be like. This was the first time I've had one! And I unfortunately was 30 min late picking up my order. Oooops! I got the YES meal for a Yelp event. Ordering was super easy via text. We got the Sifirina and the Pabellon, tequenos, and pastelitos de guava. The tequenos were delicious. They were warm and cheesy. The dough was light, not greasy or oily. They were like everything you would want in a stuffed pizza crust, especially if you hate pizza crust because the dough is nothing like pizza crust...did that make sense? Anyways, 5/5 would eat again. Now, the arepas. They were quite drippy, but again I picked up my food late so they were sitting for a bit. My bf really liked the corn(?) bread for them. We both thought they were kind of lacking some kind of flavor. I liked the Pabellon more but he liked the Sifirina more for the sauce. The Pabellon has plantains but I couldn't really taste them for some reason. Overall, I honestly thought they were alright but again I know nothing about arepas. These could be the most amazing arepas for all I know, but just not my preference. My bf actually liked them overall so it really depends on your food preferences. Pastelitos de guava were good! As a first time customer (takeout), my excitement quickly dissipated. It started shortly after Arepas En Bici notified me that my food was ready. Despite his Yelp page indicating that credit cards are accepted (contrary information on their website) he denied accepting credit cards. Before I could arrive at the location, I had to get cash. During my trip to pick up my food, he contacted me another 3 times!! Why? Because apparently, this establishment is really NOT a TAKEOUT. IT is a meet at a "location on the sidewalk of such and such #." He had other orders to fulfill and was growing impatient standing on the sidewalk! The actual address where the food is prepared is not disclosed. He only, mentions, "a few blocks away." Why the secrecy? When I arrived, I asked him why he did not communicate with me the circumstance that there was in fact NO physical structure and time urgency. He, not once but 3x insisted that it was ALL spell out on the website! Photos attached proved otherwise. Summary experience: 1. Why is the food being prepared "a few blocks away"? 2. NO where on his website or Yelp states that his "TAKEOUT" is a time sensitive situation due to the sidewalk juggling act. **His website says "ONLY one chef in the kitchen." That means there is only one person preparing food. Chef does not mean personnel, host, waiter, other assistance. Chef, for simplicity means a person that prepares the food. Not only did he not take responsibility for a situation he created, he tried to blame me! 3. I paid cash and he did not return my change. 4. He stuffed three orders into one box. read more

Off the hook! Everything this geezer concocts in his little kitchen is quite brilliant. The quality of the meats (the chicken and the beef is Halal, by the way) and ingredients is top notch and you can tell/taste with the first bite. There really isn't anything I can't recommend. I didn't realize that I missed arepas so much and then I happened on Arepas En Bici and just ordered. Yes, he's on a bike, which is amazing. He has good communication and told me he would be delivering my order early, which was fine. I got my order and once I had a small break, ate my first arepa. It was divine. So good and the arepas are bigger than what I am used to. The fillings are wonderful and one arepa is good enough for a meal, that's how filling they are. Although I read good reviews about this service and the food it offered, I was very disappointed on how it turned out to be. The Hallacas weren't even close to the true Venezuelan flavor. I understand that people do make dishes differently, but they always have a common ground and in this case, there was no common ground, the real flavor faded, nearly non existent. I was not even able to eat it, the smell and look of the Guiso were not pleasing at all. The corn dough was not the greatest, it was really pale and soft (clay like). It was very disappointing, but nevertheless I had high hopes for the Pan de Jamon, but yet, it was overpriced for the quality of the product, it was small and it seemed to be dry, over cooked, and the fillings were almost non existent, the size of the product is not worth the price. It's really sad when I had such high hopes, and also they were for a Christmas as a family tradition but sadly non enjoyable. I am really not petty when it comes to food, but in this case, I feel like I had to write a review and let people know about how things can turn out. I would not recommend at all. read more
