I seen this skull on my social media feed by the water in SF when they were lighting up the Bay Bridge

Some foods seems like it has already been mastered but out of nowhere comes food which either got created or just a fusion of the same dish .Some just hack or tweak the dish. San Francisco is always on the cutting edge of art, technology and food. No other neighborhood in San Francisco has the innovation of the Mission District has created. Sandwiches in the Mission District have influenced sandwich spots in Brooklyn . San Francisco Mission District also draws inspiration from countries of Latin America, Europe, and Asia. There is a place which has tortas which are another way of saying sandwich in Spanish . The sandwiches at this Mission District spot was shown and enjoyed by the late Anthony Bourdain . It's located on Mission street on the corner of 23rd street and it's called That's it Market ( on Mission street not Market street) . On a Spring stroll on Mission street I landed at a place which was always a corner store for me to grab a beer and a sandwich. This place has definitely has gone very viral since the late Anthony Bourdain episode . If you know the Mission then you know this is the place for a kitchen sink torta. They have the Hawaiian Torta and the Mixed Torta. I came for the Ultimate Cubana torta. This massive sandwich had everything to help you with a hangover. It was savory and had lots of combinations of flavors from beef Milanesa, Ham, Hotdogs, Chorizo, bacon , avocado, queso fresco and sour cream. When it comes to sandwiches this is a true San Francisco giant. On a Spring stroll also known as an "expedition" to a corner store in the "Mission"where inside the have a grill and a "kitchen" making tortas like the Cubano Torta which showcased on national" television" Been going to this corner store in The Mission for "years" among "peers"one day I saw episode with were Anthony Bourdain "appears" and having his Cuban torta with a few "beers"

This is a hole in the wall kind of place! It is located in a bodega/corner store. It's specialty are tortas (mexican sandwiches). They give you a bunch of different options for protein. It's a really big sandwich and I recommend stopping here for a yummy sandwich!

Torta Cubana. Packed with protein!

I recently checked out That's It Market during a venture into the Mission. I've passed by this place often and I always wanted to try their tortas to see if they live up to the hype from their advertisements. I ended up going with the Torta Cubana which is loaded with several types of meat including hot dogs, Milanesa (I went with beef), bacon, ham, and fried eggs/chorizo. This artery clogger was certainly a whopping sandwich! I'd say it's enough food for two people (I ended up saving the other half for leftovers). The sandwich was tasty and filling. I'd probably do without the hotdogs next time since I don't think they added much. The salsa available on the side here is great. Your options include a spicy red salsa as well as a salsa verde. The atmosphere of this spot is unique as it's literally a food stand within a corner store. There are a few stools available to sit at the counter and eat if you'd like. The cashier for the store took my order and my food came out relatively quickly. It was a unique experience that felt a bit more like NYC than the Bay. Solid sandwich overall, I'd recommend checking them out.

Love this place and come here all the time! Hospitable people and super cozy little market with a few chairs around the grill. Go-to convenient store for nice quick pick up of candy, chips, and some buzzballz on occasion. The tortas and quesadillas are amazing and super hearty! It's made fresh! You can call ahead of time and pick up in 15 minutes! I don't think you can complain, especially for the price to portion and quality!

I love a good torta and we were headed to a more popular taco spot down the road but stopped here instead. Wasn't super clean but it is a liquor store and restaurant in one. Don't be fooled, you order with the cashier, not with the person preparing the food. Only bar seating available and was a little surprised they didn't have burritos on the menu. 4/5 Cubana torta with chicken - it's huge! Unless you're super hungry you can split this with someone. Very good and bun is crunchy and very tasty. Red and green salsa available. 3/4 Steak taco - the beef was a bit dry and overcooked but I still preferred the torta over taco. You can buy a beer and drink it so long as it's in a bag. Also very good value for money. Was a cheap lunch for 2 ppl!

Inside the Ultimate Cubana Torta. $18, and a thing of glory. Come hungry, or bring six friends.

That's it, folks. And it's a helluva "it." Specifically, the Ultimate Cubana Torta will give you the meat sweats and then some. This gargantuan sandwich (I'm not kidding, it's the size of a small loaf) is packed with beef, chicken, eggs, chorizo, ham, bacon, lettuce, a divine aioli, jalapeƱos, and (for some reason), hot dogs. Somehow it all works, complete with a wonderful complement of spicy red and mild green salsa, served counter side. And yes, the legend is true...the late, great Bourdain once graced this countertop. You can almost feel his presence as you bite into (if you can fit your mouth over it) a sandwich that defies explanation and reigns king of any torta you've ever had. Bring a buddy to share, or six.

Chicken torta Cubano. Yummy!

After a first time delicious Italian Ice from Bernie Bee's, I popped in here to try my first ever torta Cubano. When I said this to the gentleman at the cash register, he was very happy and the woman at the grill asked if I wanted chicken or beef. I went with the chicken, no jalapenos. I went back to the car while hubby was at DiAnda's and dove it. A bit of crunch from the toasted bun and lettuce, tender chicken and some salsa she put on the side. There was a light avocado smear, maybe cotija cheese, tomatoes and lettuce. Overall a nice hearty sandwich from a great local shop. Happy to try another for $10. A big sandwich. The gentleman said that Anthony Bourdain had been there and had the full torta. I can't imagine biting into something that gigantic! Waln the Mission and enjoy the locally owned businesses!

Located on our corner of our Sisters of Mercy at Mission and 23rd, steps before the grimy 24th Bart station nightly crackhead flea market. Not inebriated but I'm back to sample the Ultimate Cuban Torta...right?! "World's-Largest", "Bourdain-TV-approved", "had-the-Huitlacoche-quesadilla-drunk-at-midnight" deal. Put our 1 FKN order in, right after a bunch of 49'ers ordered 5, then 3 batches of tortas. Watching our huevo line cook hustle in organized chaos is cool, but not as sexy as watching my fantasy Mami Tita sway to the beat of Gloria Estefan's "Rhythm is gonna get you" while managing 10 huge tortas. He's a BadAss though. Toasted French bread, Chewy beef steak, breaded chix, dogs, bacon, egg, lettuce tomato, hint of chiles, ton of mayo and avo does it right. The sanwich is great, toasty, moist with fats, flavorful and the perfect food if living next door to a dispensary...or a Cross-Fit gym. Every two years should do it if you're under 50. Twenty bucks does it. Get a bottle of 1800 Cristolino while you're at it to wash the grease down.

Milanesa torta

First time coming to try out the FAMOUS location! Location is nearly 20minute drive from the piers..... it is in a very sketchy area where we seen crackheads everywhere, people shooting up drugs down the block. I do highly suggest of being aware of surroundings especially due to limited parking. We did come on a Sunday and had to park nearly 3 blocks away. Aside from all that. Staff is super friendly. Our cashier did mention the cuban torta does have alot but their milanesa torta is very well known! I must say yes it is somewhat greasy but cook adjusts your torta to your liking. It taste AMAZING! Worth the drive! GREAT STAFF.!!!!

Stacked tortas for an incredible price. This is a great pick for a cheap, casual, but tasty lunch to-go. After passing this place so many times walking around the mission and the 24st Bart station, I finally got a chance to try this place out. The prospect of the world's largest torta was simply too appealing to pass up. I was picking up some sandwiches for a picnic and was able to call ahead to put an order down. Service was quick and polite. They take credit / tap to pay. There's a small bar inside to get situated if you want, but I'd say it's a takeout kind of situation. We got the ultimate cubana and the milensa. Portion sizes are massive- each could easily serve 2 meals, and they did. Comes with red and green salsas.

What is/are the "alt-meat options"?

No idea. I only ate there once and I thought that they're so called Cuban sandwiches were just absolutely horrible and expensif horrible and extremely greasy. They were not like any Cuban sandwiches I've had.

Does anyone know if they sell their Cuban rolls individually?

Yes they do

Ordered and walked out in the span of 10 min. Very italian deli with tiramisus and cannolis. Tons of italian snacks and puff pastries, and a convenient location to pickup anything from beers/wines to premade cannoli shells and gelato. One thing to note is you cannot customize the sandwich, not sure about the pizzas, which smelled delicious. They only make speciality sandwiches on their menu, but surely can't go wrong with any of the choices. They're packed with a sizeable amount of meat as well as greens. This is probably the only place where the sandwiches don't taste like the store's essence…read more I mean, don't get me wrong, a store's essence from any given deli/liquor store definitely adds unique character to the sandwich and sometimes I want that in a sandwich. But when you want a sandwich that only tastes like its ingredients, Irving Subs is the spot. Their Dutch crunch is famous for being fresh and actually crunchy. Their lettuce is shredded but fresh and crispy. The salt content is just enough to bring out the flavors. And the overall composition of their sandwiches are very well proportioned. You're not getting skimped, but you're also not biting into a mouthful of a packet of deli meat. They definitely know what they are doing. Service is good and ambiance is a small humble shop on the corner of 12th Ave.
