My wife and I were visiting my great niece and it turns out eight years old. She has a talent for art so I said oh I know what to get her. My brother was a famous artist, and he was encouraged from that age forward, and it really helped his understanding of art and creation of it. So we want to encourage that with her. The staff was one gentleman that ran the store when we came in and he directed us to the color, pencils and a nice notebook to do her drawings. Thank you so much. You should've heard her excitement when she saw what we got her ... it was payday. The store was spacious and wonderfully full shelves that we could find and choose whatever we wanted for our artistic needs. The staff, the gentleman that helped us was for a pleasant and helpful and informative. He assisted my wife several times and myself I was pretty good on my own, but he did give me some assistance in one area. The quality of the merchandise they have there is very very good. There are no art supply stores in the CA desert where I live. So, when we were in town for spring training, I checked out this great store. I'm using lots of different mediums and they had supplies for everything!! They carry good quality paints and supplies - picked up M.Graham gouache, Daniel Smith watercolors, pan pastels and even some R&F pigment sticks for my encaustics. I am an artist and shop at art stores quite a lot. There is an ever-increasing ease of shopping online, for easier service and candidly better prices. In spite of this, I try to shop locally to support. So I went to AZ Art Supply on Friday afternoon. I arrived close to closing time, (I was told this three times before I reached for a cart) and proceeded to look to restock my art studio. Candidly, I was looking to splurge. I felt rushed and disrespected the entire time I was in the store. They weren't interested in me as a customer, but rather getting the store shut down and me pushed out. By the time I made it to the register, with not even close to what I was going to purchase, I was frustrated. I was "greeted" with, "We are trying to close up", I then responded with "Yes, I am aware of that as everyone one of the employees me this". I asked to speak with a manager, and Michael who was the rudest to me said he was the manager. I then decided NOT to purchase my items and ask for the owner's information. I called back today and asked for the owner or a manager I could speak with; initially, the person I spoke with got agitated with me even though my tone and words were even and not aggressive. He then hung up on me. I called back and was forwarded to I'm assuming a manager who did listen to my concern. I won't go back to AZ Art Supply because they took the service OUT of Customer service. Oh yeah, Friday night after leaving AZ Art, I drove 20 minutes away from AZ Art and shopped at Jerry's Artarama of Tempe. I see that a Susan has responded to my review from over a month ago. Over the last 20 y ears I have shopped at Arizona Art Supply many times and spent quite a bit of money there. The Scottsdale store was convenient for me and while their prices were high I went when I needed something quickly. I found most of the staff to be inexperienced and knew very little about the products in the store and often gave me misinformation. This store is closed now which is no surprise and so I have gone to the Phoenix store which really is not any better. They are also not customer friendly in any way and only had their staff wear masks when it was mandated by the City. They wanted me to leave my handbag at the front desk and I refused. If they don't trust me with their stuff why should I trust them with mine? This is what security cameras are for. No more AZ Art Supply for me. I walked int0 Arizona Art Supply and fell in love. I moved downtown 2 years ago, and I've never quite gotten my craft room up and running. But I had a particular project in mind, and stopped by the shop on a weekend for some spray adhesive. I struggled to find a place to lock up my bike. Attended an oil painting class there recently and so enjoyed the class and afterwards the instructor took us around to point out the types and brands of art supplies she uses and recommends. I'd recommend this art supply store for professional fine artists and graphic artists, but NOT for occasional dabblers/hobbyists/crafters. The supplies they stock are high-quality, professional artist-grade materials, i.e. EXPENSIVE for the most part. If you are not absolutely sure of what you want and just want to try something out, DON'T come here because you might inadvertently spend a fortune. This is NOT the place to buy student-grade (lower-quality) art supplies. But if you are a serious artist, and have a good idea of what you need, you will likely find exactly what you are looking for. If you need advice on materials, the staff is very helpful. Once I brought in a tiny stub of charcoal that was the only one in my art kit that just felt right and made the most beautiful marks. This sweet young lady tested it for me and pronounced it a "6B" grade of charcoal and found some more for me. Now I'm happy because I have a whole stash of 6B charcoal sticks. Excellent selection of various graphite pencils and charcoals that are priced lower than the hobby/craft stores. This is the best art supply store in Phoenix, however if you are in the East Valley there are a couple of good stores also. 10-20% Discounts for students, teachers and AZ Artist Guild members. I bought a $50 watercolor pallet a week ago. I decided I did not like the solid cakes and came in a few days ago with my unused set (the only cake I used was the white one) and receipt looking to do an in-store exchange for watercolor tubes. I was told by one employee that if I replaced the white cake, that I could do the exchange. So the next day (yesterday) I drove all the way to the art store WITH THE REPLACED WHITE CAKE only to be told by a manager that I could not do the exchange because I "took the plastic coverings off the cakes and did not have the box it came in. Store policy blah blah blah." (I understand store policy but I was told one thing one day and a different thing the next day, not cool.) I then spoke to one of the employees who was there the day that I was told I could do the exchange and he just acted like he didn't know what I was talking about and told me "it must have just been a misunderstanding." (on my end) I am extremely upset because I felt I had been lied to was essentially told that I didn't know what I was talking about. I was ridden with anxiety all day yesterday due to this experience As much as I like coming here and supporting local business, I'm just going to buy some tube watercolors from Amazon.com purely so I don't ever have to deal with Arizona Art Supply again. One positive thing I can say about the store is that their selection is huge and there are about two employees that are very friendly, knowledgable and helpful. I visited Arizona Art Supply a couple of weeks ago and do not recommend it. Although the staff was friendly and helped me find everything I needed, they gave me some of the wrong supplies. I trusted the employees with finding the correct scalpel and blade that I needed for class with the exact type and size listed. They told me that they found the exact ones but I am now discovering not only did they give me a different brand, but the blade won't even fit the scalpel. Not only that but I feel like I wasted money because the supplies were much more expensive than they would have been at Blick. I only came here because Blick was sold out of most of the items I needed. Save your money. ASU students- wait for Blick to restock or find a different store. At Arizona Art Supplies they are more concerned about making a quick buck than keeping a customer. read more

At first he said they didn't carry what I needed, when I asked for his professional advice he suggest foamcore! Finally he ask his manager who said they can order it, and Lee added that it would take a while and they couldn't quote a time. He was really pushing me to not go with their company. Today my husband and I decided to check this place out for the first time. I was very excited since we are both artist and we spend a lot of money on art supplies. When we walked in the lady at the counter seemed very nice. I grabbed a shopping basket and talked to her for a min. Then she asked me to give her my purse. It's a small backpack and they don't allow people walking around with backpacks. I understand this but it's my purse and I don't allow strangers to be alone with it. I also do not leave it in the car. I spoke with the manger and was told I couldn't shop with my purse on my back. The whole time I was in the store a older lady with no tattoos was allowed to walk all over the store with her large designer bag slung over her shoulder. Her bag was bigger then mine but because of how I look I guess I'm not allowed the same respect. I have now read so many reviews on other sites from former employees even that are not good.
