Before heading out to get food, my sisters (who are 17) and I stopped to take a few pictures by the Fourth of July sign at the front of the casino. A tall, skinny white security guard with a ponytail approached us even though we weren't causing any problems. We were simply taking photos and walking toward the exit. He asked for my ID, examined it closely, and even bent it as if he didn't know what a legitimate ID looked like. He then asked if we were staying at the hotel. I told him yes and asked what the issue was. The only explanation he gave was that I "looked underage." My ID is real, and I was treated like I had done something wrong when I hadn't. The situation became even more uncomfortable when he and about six other security guards followed us all the way to the elevator. We were doing nothing more than taking pictures and leaving to get food, which we ended up not doing because of how uncomfortable the encounter made us feel. I've stayed at many casinos, and I've never been treated this way. Meanwhile, there were actual children running around the casino floor, yet security chose to single us out instead. I would recommend better training for your security staff, especially on how to verify IDs professionally and how to approach guests with respect. Unfortunately, because of this experience, I won't be returning.

I came here with a friend, to watch a Thursday night concert. My friend went to the Pink Floyd…read morecover band, and she and I were there last week to see a Bruno Mars cover band. We parked on the top floor of the parking garage and for whatever reason, the elevator took a while to show up and take us down to the casino floor. We almost used the stairs. But we did get there, and it was kind of close to the starting time of the concert too, but it was easy to get into the venue area with our rewards card. They had food for sale, but we skipped it (it smelled wonderful) and headed to the concert area, which was just an open area next to the 5 story parking garage, bordered by the service roads accessing the parking garage and laid down with short astroturf. The performance stage seemed kind of small, and the seating area seemed just adequate (many of us who showed up not-early had to stand), but it got the job done. The folding chairs were quite padded, which was nice (we did get a seat maybe 2/3 of the way through the concert, when a group of people left). Even for Bruno Mars (777 was the name of their tribute group), the average age of the audience seemed to skew pretty high, with a sea of white hair. But we all had a good time, even if we didn't get out of our seats or dance until the very last song. The only difficulty was this particular night had a very chilly wind blowing constantly and I didn't have a jacket with me, so I was quite cold. We jetted out of there just after the last song, and we were able to traverse the casino and parking garage and exit quickly and easily. I had wanted to roam around the casino after the concert, but I was so cold and tired from the wind (it felt like a whole bucket of dust had been wind-blown into my eyes), that I just wanted to go home after. Too bad a casino of this size can't do an indoor event, but I was still glad I went. Next time if the weather is better, I'll spend more time in the gaming area. :)

We ended up getting the Chinese food, and it was honestly some of the worst food I've ever had. Another issue was cleanliness. If you're planning to visit, I'd definitely recommend bringing your own disinfectant wipes or sanitizer to clean.

The bathroom lights above the shower did not work, they would flicker then go off. The tissue box was empty at check in besides the tissue rose made on top. There were issues with the "mini bar" sensor at check in and someone had to come check on it later in the week. We didn't get service on some days of stay even with the "Service Please" Sign on the room door. The pool is open until 10pm, however the pool bar closes at 6pm and they had people exit their cabana rentals at 7pm. The drinks at the bar were severely over priced and mediocre at best. We paid $43 for 2 margaritas at the pool bar that tasted like blended water with a splash of margarita mix. The umbrellas at the pool had to be closed most of the time due to the winds, which also blew all types of debris and trash into the pools causing a bad look. One of our party was double charged at the pool bar, and they expressed that they could not reverse the charge and if they did it would take 7-10 days to return to the card, but refused to give us the extra drink because they couldn't serve more than 2 drinks within 30 minutes to the same person...even though there was 6 of us in the party and she was charged for 3 drinks, twice. Which could have been one per person in our party. The mobile bars within our evening reception drinks were higher priced in there than on the casino floor, so we all left our reception, to get drinks and come back. Drinks were on average $4-8 more than at the bar at the casino. One of the girls in our group personal cards was charged not only for the deposit amount for the stay but then the remainder of the balance for the first night and then again for the rest of her stay, causing her bank account to be nearly cleared out. In which the front desk staff told her there was nothing they could do, and that it would go back to her card Friday at the earliest (this was Tuesday). As we were there on business the rooms were prepaid with CC authorizations on file for the cost of the room rate + resort fees, so she was left with no money to pay for food or anything else for the rest of the week, and they could not provide any help and did not have any managers on property. We were able to track down a manager in a different department who was at least able to get her a food comp to pay for her meal thankfully. We were really excited to stay at Gila River, we had heard many great things about this property and were were unimpressed with the level of guest service.

I invited four girlfriends to join me, and each of them booked their own rooms. Unfortunately, after spending four days at the property, I can confidently say this was one of the most disappointing luxury hotel experiences I've ever had. The problems started at check-in. The front desk associate barely engaged with me, offered no overview of the property, amenities, or resort experience, and didn't ask whether it was my first visit. When I mentioned I was celebrating my birthday, there wasn't even a simple "Happy Birthday." I was handed a key and what turned out to be a property map, with no explanation whatsoever. My next stop was the concierge desk to inquire about pool cabanas. I was simply told they were sold out. No alternatives were offered, no waitlist was mentioned, and no effort was made to assist. Instead, I was told to look at an outside website myself. At a luxury resort, isn't the concierge's role to help guests find solutions and make arrangements? When I later asked if the resort did anything special for birthday guests, the concierge emailed me a list of items I could purchase. That response perfectly summarized the level of hospitality we experienced. The room itself was another disappointment. It felt outdated and in need of renovation, hardly what one would expect from a luxury property. Ironically, when I later visited the pool and asked an attendant about cabanas, she immediately offered to place me on a waitlist in case of cancellations--an option the concierge never bothered to mention. The following morning, I spoke with a manager, Alley, about my experience. She apologized and offered a $100 food and beverage credit, which I appreciated. However, when I returned to my room, I discovered something far more concerning: one of the pillows had visible mold on it. Since I don't sleep with pillows, I hadn't noticed it the first night. As I looked closer, I found stains on the bedding, pillows, lampshade, and even areas of the room that clearly had not been properly cleaned. Housekeeping came and changed the sheets and pillowcases, but shockingly left behind the actual moldy pillow. At that point, this had moved far beyond a service issue and into a cleanliness and health concern. I reported everything again to management. The additional response was a $50 credit. At this point, the property had failed in virtually every area that defines a luxury hotel: guest service, concierge support, cleanliness, attention to detail, and problem resolution. My friends who booked rooms experienced similar frustrations with both customer service and housekeeping. We ultimately spent much of our time dining at restaurants off property and even rented a cabana at another resort because our experience at The Phoenician was so disappointing. For a stay that cost me over $2,000, offering a total of $150 in credits felt completely out of touch with the severity of the issues. The amount wasn't the problem, it was the lack of accountability and genuine concern. I rarely leave negative reviews, but travelers should know that this property did not deliver anything close to the luxury experience it advertises. Between the poor service, moldy pillow, cleanliness concerns, and overall lack of hospitality, I cannot recommend The Phoenician. I will also be filing a complaint through Marriott Bonvoy regarding my experience. Luxury hotels are defined by service, attention to detail, and how they handle problems when they arise. Unfortunately, The Phoenician failed on all three.
