My 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 (with 180,000 trouble free miles) decided to suddenly have engine seizures followed by complete failure. I brought it to a local repair shop I had been using and they recommended a new engine / rebuild at the tune of about $3500. I decided to check around and quickly discovered that most shops wanted between $3000 - $3800 to get the vehicle back on the road. Some offered a two year limited warranty, some offered none. I knew I was going to get it fixed as the truck is in excellent shape and has served me well, so it was much cheaper to fix it then go and try to find another reliable one. Well, I happened upon Master Engine Rebuilding, called and spoke with Akram (a really great guy) and was told that the vehicle could be up and running in as quick as a week, with a 3 yr. unlimited miles warranty, for around $1500 - $2000 depending on damage. So, I took them up on the free towing and the next day I went down to do the paperwork. I was surprised to learn that they had already removed the engine, a 4.7 EFI V8, and determined the cause of the problem (3 steel valve seats dropped into the cylinders). I was brought back to the shop area where the tech showed me the damaged parts, how it was caused and what needed to be done. I was impressed with the overall condition of the shop, how clean and neat everything appeared to be, and how the tech stations were set up and organized. There was no mess, clutter or junk. I had a good feeling about this place. So exactly one week later I get a call, the vehicle is fixed, and for $2000, my truck is now running like it was brand new. It's hard to imagine that the odometer is at 180K because this baby is running better than it ever did. I would high recommend Master Engine Rebuilding to anyone contemplating needing any major engine overhaul. Dissatisfied - had engine rebuilt, 6 months later piston they installed completely disintegrated causeing major damage to engine block. Took it back for warranty and was denied as they claim it was my fault it happened. Had to tow vehicle back home after they took it apart, threw all parts in vehicle without protecting inside and was told they would just park the vehicle outside and would not be responsible if it got towed. They based their conclusion upon opinion and not factual evidence. Pretty much lost $3500 and a vehicle without an engine. I would NOT recommend Arizona Engine Rebuild to anyone as customer service is lacking especially under their warranty department. read more

I took a 2000 Chevy S10 in for an engine rebuild. I was quoted $2,395.00. after they worked on it they called and told me one of the heads was not reusable and would have to be replaced, the cost went up to $3,585.50, but the part was only $450. This went way over bid and the parts were marked up way to much. 6 spark plugs for $90, a water pump for $180 and the thermostat for $60, really. Be careful getting a bid you may get stuck like I did with paying way more. I should have looked at their reviews first, but trusted a mechanic who recommended them. Won't do that again. read more

Master Engine Rebuilders in Phoenix, AZ. This shop has been a nightmare for me. Their advertisement page in New Times says $1,495. For the repair or replacement of my engine with a 3 year guarantee that they have no intentions of honoring. I have payed $2,200 for my engine to be rebuilt, received a receipt that says Payed In Full and they still want more money from me. They have had my vehicle for almost a month now and when I call to check the status, I've been cussed at, yelled at and blamed for not having the money for additional repairs. They are very unprofessional and should Not be in business, I'm not the only dissatisfied customer, it seems they have many and also have issues with the BBB but ignore. In my opinion, they should not be in business or learn how to conduct business here in America. For anyone that has gotten good service from this shop, I would be amazed. No Stars from me but a big ! I'm still trying to get my vehicle back and at this point that still hasn't happened . read more

This is a -5 Star rating! I took my engine into this repair shop because I wanted to inspect their work after the rebuild. You cannot inspect your motor if a shop pulls the motor and then reinstalls it, which is what the vast majority of customers do here. I provided a "long block", which is a partially assembled engine block with the rotating assembly, camshaft, lifters, heads, valve covers, timing set and oil pan. I even supplied the intake manifold. I completely removed the rest of the brackets, motor parts and sensors because I was replacing everything old with new parts. I partially disassembled the long block to inspect the condition before I gave Master Engine the motor so I'd know the pre-condition. The engine had 200,563 miles and it ran well, but I needed a reliable engine for a trip to Alaska. I asked the owner in person what parts would be replaced. I was told that the cylinder head and head components, connecting rods, push rods, and engine block would all be inspected and reused if they were not damaged or out of specification. I asked if the head bolts would be replaced and the owner told me, "Yes, so will the bearings, gaskets, timing set, freeze plugs, oil pump, pistons, piston rings, camshaft and lifters, along with the valve guides and valve seals". I requested that "ALL" of the unused parts be returned to me!!! This is were the problems started. When I picked up what was supposed to be a rebuilt "long block", I noticed that the engine was being sprayed once again with paint, which I later learned was done to cover up the dirt and grease that had not been cleaned from the motor. I loaded the engine into my trailer and took it back to my garage were I noticed that I had not received the camshaft and lifters. I immediately called the owner where he told me that he'd have to look into the engine build with the employee who did the work, and he'd call me back within 10 minutes. The call came back quick and the apologies came fast, but the blame was put on the employee when it should have been placed on the owner, the man who controls the checkbook, the parts ordering, and the man who's responsible for quality control, the man who I was speaking to!!! I took the engine back that hour and I was promised that everything would be made right within two days...but it was "NOT" made right. I was told that I could have my engine back within two days, but it turned into just over a week because of the delays. You see, the camshaft and lifters were "NEVER" ordered!!! I was waiting for the parts to arrive plus assembly, NOT JUST ASSEMBLY!!! Remember all of the people who bring their vehicle in for a rebuild?!! They never knew what I figured out! Now, ask yourself how many people aren't getting what they paid for because they never check. Remember, before returning the engine to have the NEW camshaft and lifters installed, I inspected the engine inside and out! Not only did I not receive what I paid for the first go around, I didn't get it on the second chance that I gave the shop either!!! The owner purchased a "USED" camshaft and installed it into my engine with full knowledge...and it was installed without a drop of lube...bone dry! I could clearly see the score marks and dirt on the USED CAMSHAFT back at my garage after removing the intake for a second time!!! The engine had dirty grease clumps inside along with small metal shavings that looked as if they were from the cylinder honing process, which is totally unacceptable. Who in the hell does the same thing ''TWICE'' to the same customer who asks all of the right questions and informs the owner/builder of the shop that they'll be checking?! I was also informed via the owner that his shop re-uses head bolts! Originally, I was told that they would be replaced. I purposely removed 8 of the 16 head bolts so he wouldn't be able to reuse them, but he used what I gave him without my knowledge. One head had the old used head bolts while the other had new head bolts. Anyone who rebuilds engines knows that head bolts are tempered and that they stretch during the torque procedures, which removes the tempering making them unusable because they'll keep stretching and eventually cause a head gasket failure! The owner informed me that this is what they do on ALL of their engine rebuilds!!! Now I have $1,052.00 invested that I have to recover form this shop! The owner verbally agreed to refund part of my money, but that is not good enough. I want a full refund because he's a fraud and a liar! Master Engine will receive a visit from the Arizona State Attorney General's Office in the near future for fraud, this I promise!!! This was the worst experience of my life the damage to my vehicles is now in the thousands I have no choice but to go after a remedy. I have tried to speak to the owner but all he sees is money. My initial experience was because I had seen good reviews I went here for a rebuild. I was quoted initially $1700. This quickly went out of affordability when he said we needed a new crankshaft which brought it up to $2600. After having the vehicle several weeks we were told it was done. Right away things were not right. When we picked it up we noticed bolts missing lines not attached service lights on and even other peoples car parts in the back of our truck. We brought i back and each time he said it was fixed something else was broken. After returning it 3 times we realized that we could not afford for them to brake one more thing. No ac, they cut the wiring harness for the wipers it never stopped leaking burning and blowing several quarts of oil through engine and even out the exhaust. Nothing would be on the ground. They smashed the pan. At this point we took it to Dodge and spent $1800 to try and fix the problem and Dodge finally came back and said the issue was in rebuild and we needed to get another engine another cost of over $3300. In addition to this I had another car brought there around the same time and they wrecked this one. I brought it in and they were just replacing a head gasket and resurfacing the heads. They had it several weeks and than tried to sell me an engine rebuild on this one I said no way you have had it 4 weeks and you are just now telling me this. I have a mustang and was told that these blocks are solid no rebuild was necessary. Thank god I did not let them.They redid the heads and 3 times I tried to pick up this vehicle it would sputter and shut off. They said it was out of gas. Finally I had towed to my house as I did not trust there job. I had it looked at and they did redo the gasket but the cause of the car issue was someone broke the long screw that held the battery in place and welded it to the body of the car and top of the battery causing it to arc and fire and shut the car off we had to buy a new battery and replace the screw $2 to replace the screw that did all this damage. It continued to short out the fuses to the fuel pump and eventually had Chapman ford through 6 hours of labor tracked down the chafed wire that was shorted out. Total cost of $800 labor,3 tows and many hours of being broken down as fuses were blown every day on the fuel pump. I feel the shop owner means well but he has people working for him that don't know what they are doing. Initially I thought they may be a good engine rebuild and repair shop but had no business taking apart vehicles and putting them back together they don't know how to do this. Maybe if another shop took out the engine and handed to them for the rebuild it may not have been so bad but I was wrong as my sons rebuild is no good. Lesson learned unless you are dealing with an insanely knowledgeable shop do not rebuild your engine you are better off buying a used engine from LKQ and putting it in. The shop owner did alot to help my son and I as far as allowing us to make payments on the amount over the original quote on the truck but it was a mute point as we had a non functioning vehicle and only Dodge that we trusted to fix it at this point. He needs to refund the money that was given him and pay for the damages they caused both vehicles. read more

I considered Master Engine Rebuilders for a rebuild but due to bad experiences over the years at other shops I visited this shop and interviewed the owner and manager before bringing my car in. They both were friendly and chatty, pointed out their warranty and that the likely cause of my problem was a bad valve seat (another, "cleaner" AAA-certified shop misdiagnosed the problem and sold me a lot of useless work on this car). But I noticed that they did not seem too busy and if this was a good shop with a well-known reputation I would have expected more activity - phone calls, questions for the manager from the techs, customers coming and going, etc. A red flag to me. This made me suspicious that they could spend so much time trying to drum up a single customer. To me the ultimate test of whether a shop is on the up and up is whether the customer is allowed to observe the work being done, but they would not allow this for "insurance reasons". I admit it does also have a detrimental effect on the mechanic, having someone watching their every move. But I've had bad rebuild experiences before and when there is no transparency alarm bells should be going off (a remote video link to each car's work in progress might get around the "insurance" excuse. Anyhow I walked through the shop to see the operations. There were about 20-25 cars in the building in various states of repair, many it seemed did not even have work started and had been sitting in there for an extended period of time, just parked (and based on the age, make & models that I saw those cars would not normally be worth having a rebuild done). The shop was not super clean and organized but not a total mess, either. Organization is VERY important when disassembling an engine and I though it should have been better. There were only 3 techs slowly working on the cars, based on appearances ONLY they did not seem to me to be certified mechanics from a technical school (those folks have a more educated, "alert" look about them). But it is Summer in Phoenix, and this is a dirty business, so that could be a misperception. In the end I decided not to get my engine rebuilt here (or anywhere else, at this point). Too many open questions and concerns on my part. This shop may be capable of doing fine work but I'd expect to see more positive, genuine-sounding" testimonials, and see different activity on site. There were too many similarities to the dishonest shops I'd dealt with before for me to shell out $2K on a car that was only worth $3500. I can't honestly rate them since I did not use them, but if Yelp does require a rating to post a review that will be the reason for my giving them 2 stars. Keep in mind they did not do any work for me, and you may have a good experience with them. read more

I took my 2006 Ford F-150 to them because it ran like crap. I believe it had a slipped timing chain. The owner said it would be $3000 dollars to rebuild the whole engine. I thought this would be the best solution and would give me a well working vehicle that would last a long time. I was working out of town at the time and had been out of work for 6 months. Doing this would be a stretch. I told him a date of when I would have the money and he informed that he would give me to that date. If I did not have it by then, he would put a lean on the truck and sell it. I said that that was fair. I paid him his price and picked my truck up on the day before thanksgiving. The first thing I noticed is my AC, that was just service before it broke down, didn't work. I took the truck to wash it and noticed that there where new scratches in the door, and that there were gaskets and other parts in the bed. I took it back on Friday morning, showed the owner the parts and he had one of his guys install them. I came to find out that the "extra" parts were my skid plate, battery cover, my radiator cover, new gaskets (he used the old ones), and other miscellaneous items. He also told me that the AC didn't work when I brought it in and the scratches were already there. I left out of town to go to work, on the way the truck started running rough again and the check engine light came on. On the way back home the next weekend it started running really rough. I got it back home had to take a day off work to take it to him. When I brought it back to him he ran it a little, got the check engine light off, and said it was fine. I also found out at that time that he put my old spark plugs back in (and with a 5.4, it's at least a four hour job). So I changed them myself and headed back out of town. When I got to my destination, and on the way back home the next weekend, it started running rough and the check engine light came on again! I took it back to him again. Again, he just reset the light and said it was just a hick up and that this happens with rebuilt engines. I had also noticed a tapping noise in the engine. He said that that was normal. I took the truck out of town again and on the way out it did the same thing. Again, this time when I got back I took it to him and told him this is not normal and he needed to fix it. He had the truck for 2 weeks over Christmas holidays. I got the truck back and he told me it was a defective cog. It still had the tapping noise, but it seemed to be ok. I headed back out of town. It was ok for a couple of weeks, then on the way home it did the same thing again. I took it back to him had to rent a car to get back to work. He had it for a week said it was another defective cog. Again I got it back and still had the same tapping noise. I headed back out of town. A week or so later it did the same thing again. I called him and he said to bring it back. I told him that I can't afford to keep renting cars and if he can't fix it to let me know. He said he would pay up $200 for the rental car. He had the truck for about a month this time. In the meantime the job I was on came to an end and I had to come home borrow my uncles truck to bring my trailer home. When I finally got the truck back it ran ok, but the tapping noise was still there. I was able to drive the truck for about 6 months this time, but still didn't put 5000 miles on it and it did it again. In that time I also took it to get the AC fixed and found out that it just needed to be charged(you can't pull that engine with out disconnecting the condenser). I took it to the Ford dealer that said $3000 to $10000 to fix it. I finally broke down and bought a new truck. However, if he would have fixed it right the first time I would not have had to buy. I believe he used my old parts to rebuild the engine and anybody who has ever built an engine knows you can't do that. This has caused me unnecessary financial stress and wasted time with my family. I would never recommend him to anyone. He was recommended to me by a cousin with a Chevy 350, who is also having issues with his engine. read more

I took my 2005 Ford F-150 to master engines rebuilding because my car was not working. When I got there i talked to the owner and he was so kind enough to give me a cheap price. They fixed my car with in a week that I dropped it off. Once I got it, it was running better than before. I really highly recommend you guys to go to masters because they are honest and good mechanics. So if you need to fix your car go to masters because they will help you and give you a great price. So don't just stand there go to masters and get you car fixed. read more

They Do NOT worth even one star, they messed up my 2008 xterra's engine, I paid them $4000 to rebulid my engine, and I took it back to their shop three times, and they said there was no problem with it, it should be drivable, I almost got killed on the highway be losing power of the car! I took the car to the Nissan service, they said these people shouldn't be working on cars, they find out there's radiator fluid in my engine! this place is a hack. shotty work and service. took my vehicle back 3 times for the same oil leak. they used a full tube of goop to repair the leak. they cracked my timing cover. did not correctly connect parts. smashed wires on the install. broke my distributor housing. the vehicle ran worse than before the rebild. took it to my regular mechanic and come to find out its not even my engine. he does not recongnize any of my engines parts inside or out. i have spent 1500$ on repairs for an engine rebuild that is not even mine. read more

i took my car in to have the engine rebuilt. 2395.00. the first time they return my phone call. they tell me they have to replace the water pump, radiator, motor mounts, and the thermostat. i told them i just replaced all of that 2 1/2 yrs ago when i bought the car. they told me i have to replace them or it would void the warranty. what the hell is that !!! now they won't 3743.00. they screwed me and i couldn't do anything about it. they suck !!! now i have a hose leaking, so i called them and told them i had a leak and it is not safe to drive. they need to come get it. o no we are not coming to get it, you bring it here. and then they told me that they don't thing there is any thing wrong with my car. i just like to call and complain. what the hell is that. now i have to go through the trouble of suing them. {don't get screwed)!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

I got an engine rebuild done on my 2007 F-150 a couple of months ago at Master Engine Rebuilding. Before I got the job done I read the reviews and noticed that most of them were negative but I still took the risk and got my truck fixed there and thank God I did. They gave me a really good estimate and walked me through the process of what will be done to my truck and how long it would take which wasn't that long. It took them about a week to get the job done and that is when I got the call to come me and pick up my truck. When I got there the owner walked me to the back and I saw my truck and they handed me the key and I started the truck and it sounded amazing I asked if they would take me on a test drive so that I could make sure the car was running great and they did and when we were on the test drive and I was driving it was as if the car never had anything wrong with it. I am glad that I took the risk and ignored all of the reviews and got my truck fixed at Master Engine Rebuilding. read more

I took my truck to this shop to have the engine rebuilt. The told me that they would do a full diagnostic on it to determine what caused the engine problems. They told me that it needed a full rebuild and 2 connecting rods and 2 injectors and if I wanted them to buy the parts it would be an additional $500 on top of the $1800+ tax for the rebuild. I was able to buy the parts outright and bring them there for under $200. Then, once the engine was completed I took it out for a test drive with their foreman and found out that now the catalytic converters were shot. I asked him why this wasn't found before I test drove it, they said that they had just finished the motor. They had initially told me that it would be done at 3pm, at 6pm I was still sitting there waiting for my truck. When I asked the owner about the catalytic converters, he told me that they only do engine rebuilds and don't do anything else and that I would have to have the truck towed somewhere else to be repaired. I am very disappointed in this shop and wouldn't recommend them to anyone. read more
