The level of thoroughness in both diagnosis and treatment was unlike anything I've experienced at any other veterinary clinic. Yes, it's an investment--but when it comes to your dog's health, especially in their senior years, it's absolutely worth it. I don't know what happened to this practice but it's crazy expensive now. I used to bring my pups here and a dental cleaning was around $800 or close to it. More than the regular vet but it was ok because they're specialists. I used to get letters offering their special price. This was assuming no extractions. 2-3 years later it skyrocketed to $1900 for cleaning. This was in 2021. I thought I added a review at the time but it's not here. It's probably more now. You can still get a regular cleaning for $600 at the regular vet. Doesn't include x-rays but you can add it without coming close to $1900. read more

I have visited Arizona Veterinary Dental Specialist twice with my two dogs and both times the customer service and care was above and beyond. My first time visiting was with my senior dog. I was so extremely nervous about him going under for surgery and as I expressed that the amount of compassion that came from Dr. Khananisho was amazing. She listened to my concerns and made sure to give me what I needed as a pet parent to feel calm and at ease with what was happening. They start with a consultation exam and go over all of the details and pricing information. Then you come in for the surgery and they start by getting your pup under anesthesia and then do a full dental exam. After they have observed everything they call you to confirm what they will be doing as far as cleaning and extractions so that you are prepared. After they are done they will call you back inside to sit with your pet if you are anxious like me so that you feel at ease with them coming back from being under. During this time they pull up all the dental information and go over everything that was completed. The other time I came with a VERY anxious dog. We had been working with our dog on lots of training with stranger danger and explained this would be her first appt since practicing and that she may be a little antsy. Dr. Malott was AMAZING with her. He took his time letting her investigate her surroundings and him and was very gentle and calm with her. She did so good at her appt and he went above and beyond to make her feel comfortable. I am so thankful for him. Both Drs that we have seen have been the best ever and have really made us at ease with the procedures. We brought our 4 year old in to have a root canal and to have the broken tooth capped. From the moment we arrived I could tell she was in good hands. The receptionist was very friendly and brought us back to the room almost immediately. The doctor was incredibly patient and brought such good, calm vibes, our normally very scared pup was calm and friendly with him. During the procedure we received texts and phone calls with updates so we were never in the dark. They even provided the great photo I have uploaded. Upon picking up our fur baby, the doctor went over everything in great detail including photos and X-rays and explained everything to us. He even provided his personal phone number to us and told us to call if anything happened, which we luckily have not needed to use but are very grateful to have just in case. In summary, I have never experienced such great service, not even with my children's doctors. I would HIGHLY recommend this veterinary dentist. If I could give them 10 stars I would. read more

Yet, when I came to pick her up the VERY RUDE receptionist at the front desk told me there was a $61.00 charge. I was told the doctor could not see for 1 1/2 hours. It was obvious they would not give me my Dog unless I paid $61.00. The money is not the problem, it is the principle of the thing. The Doctor told me NO Charge for Korra. This place is simply amazing. I have had 5+ procedures for my cats and every time, the care and quality is simply fantastic. They talk you through everything, are super transparent with the process and potential costs, provide updates before, during, and after procedures, as well as they follow up with you multiple times after you have taken your pet home. After one of my cats had a pretty bad accident that involved him breaking a tooth very badly, he had to come in and have this tooth removed and some other associated surgical dental work. He unfortunately developed a complication after the procedure (not due to the surgery itself) but as soon as I called in and explained what was going on, they were able to get him back in the very next day and get everything corrected, with no additional charge (cat is doing fantastic now btw). As a veterinary practice the specialists at Arizona Veterinary Dental are top notch. I've seen almost every vet here and have confidence they are knowledgeable and adept at resolving any dental problems your pet may have. Small dogs are more prone to having gum disease and tooth problems since their jawbones are less dense than large dogs. As a result I aim for preventive care by getting my dogs' teeth cleaned every year. The staff here at the Gilbert location have all been very friendly and caring. My only gripe with this office though is that if I am here early (Not excessively early, maybe 5-10 minutes) for the first appointment of the day they do not unlock the door until the last possible minute, so I am left with an anxious dog waiting outside in the hot sun, monsoon rain, or waiting in my car until they open their doors. read more

I am so thankful for taking my dogs to Arizona Veterinary Dental Specialists. My 13 year old dog was in need of some dental extractions and I was very, very nervous about putting him under anesthesia (he has degenerative myelopathy and is a geriatric dog). Dr. Balke, a board certified veterinary dentist, was so kind and patient during the consultation session. His knowledge and expertise made me feel like my dog would be in the best hands I could possibly hope for. On the day of the surgery, Dr. Balke and Dr. Wegner (anesthesiologist) walked me through each step of the dental procedure. I was super impressed at their high standards when it comes down to safety measures and anesthesia monitoring throughout the surgery. From pre-op to post-op, the entire trustworthy staff was very attentive and took great care of us. I was often updated on my dog's status throughout the procedure. Post-op, Dr. Balke thoroughly went over the pictures and details of the surgery. His world-class skills saved my dog from oral pain. My dog's recovery was astonishingly fast. He came through perfectly and did not seem traumatized after the surgery, which speaks volumes about the great bedside manner they have. Dr. Balke is very professional and was incredibly accessible should any issues/emergencies arise after taking my dog home. I cannot say enough about the entire staff at AZVDS and the wonderful care they give.The cost is truly a reflection of the high standards set here. Since I have a geriatric dog with neurological issues, I am not going to risk his health issues. I am willing to pay a premium for the exceptional level of care they provide. Let me start by saying that Dr. Balke is very talented. The consult went great, then I drop my dog off and drive over an hour and a half home to wait for her. The entire time I received no updates even though I was assured I would receive texts and a phone call. I started to travel back to get there on the agreed time with the doctor (3pm) to pick up my dog and called the office on the way, when my technician informed me that the first surgery ran long and they would start on her soon. Obviously I was upset because I should have been told that the first surgery went over time by the any staff member and given the option to reschedule. I told them not to start on the surgery and I'm coming to pick up my dog and that's when the technician became hostile and demanded to talk face to face. When I arrived, the front office staff didn't bother to get off the phone, and didn't acknowledge me except for saying they'll have my dog out in a little bit. After she got off the phone, she yelled out across the lobby and asked when I want to reschedule instead of having me come to the desk. When my dog was brought out, it's not the original tech who was borderline threatening on the phone, but one who is dragging my terrified 12 year old, half blind and deaf dog along like a rag doll. I then learn that they performed blood work with no communication to me about results or anything the entire 6 hours she was there. I am not ever returning. If you love your animal, don't bring them to this practice. read more

The team of people at this hospital are amazing. The front desk staff member named Holli was super sweet was able to schedule appointments with me. The doctor Michael. was so kind and caring about my dog nugget like he was his own. My dog had serious serious surgery and I was a nervous rack and a big mass but they were able to emotionally keep me stable and help me with making sure my dog was OK from beginning to end. I was able to set up a payment plan through a third-party that works with the hospital. I'm so lucky to be able to have my daughter go through surgery and be alive and OK right now I'm so grateful! read more

I had to take my sweet old furry friend Sunny to them. He loved hanging out back and was safe from scaling the walls because he is too old.... But the heat got to him... I had to revive him enough to get him to the ER. Even though we can't go inside the building they hurried out to get him. They rehydrated Sunny through IV. They were very patient and understanding with my great concern. He was diagnosed with heart and kidney disease... Currently he is back to his normal vocal loving self. To all pet parents out there. PLEASE- BEFORE YOUR LITTLE ONE GOES UNDER FOR SURGICAL PROCEDURES. ASK IF THEIR EYES WILL BE CLOSED - I DIDN'T DO IT AND IT COST MY LITTLE ONE HER EYESIGHT :( When you hear your little ones need to have a surgical procedure . what is the first thing you think of ( after the obvious... will they come out of the surgery okay and was surgery successful??) Do you think were their eyes closed? I sadly thought about EVERYTHING except that. I took for granted my assumption that during surgery . of course my ls eyes will be closed ... why wouldn't they be? there's no reason they would keep their eyes open under bright lights to strain for a prolonged period of time. they would never be that incompetent right,.,, right??? Wrong! Last year, my 17 year old baby suffered a ruptured abcess in her mouth. I immediately rushed her to a 24=7 emergency vet. I was told she had to have her teeth removed and referred me to this office. 2 weeks later. She had an appointment . When I arrived I thought I would have a detailed run down of what to expect. no. The nurse took her and told me she will be done in about an hour . they would text me the progress and will call me when she was ready. Of course I knew if there any problems I would be told as soon as possible. She made it through the surgery thankfully ( keep in mind she was 17 at the time. surgery of any kind is very risky ) I got all the information. along with xrays of her little mouth. medications and post op expectations ( her possibly being a little loopy and maybe a little agitated but not to worry. she's on drugs . With that I was sent on my way with my sweet one.. the rest of the day I spent being thankful and relived she was over the worst part . she just needed to rest but this was going to be the first day of the rest of her little life and she will be happier. will feel better not having her bad teeth to contend with.! As I always do . after surgery I looked after my little one. watched over her like a hawk. I watched her walk around stumbling and that always makes me anxious. I couldn't wait for her to sleep off the drugs and be refreshed and her old self the following morning. The following day after time she walked she kept stumbling around as if she was still sedated. that concerned me I just thought she's older it may take her a day and a half or so.. no problem. after all the dr told me to contact him if i had any questions. Later that day she seemed be getting back to herself. she was eating --- I was able to relax a bit but of course kept my eye on her. 2days later. My nightmare begins I got up early with my sweet one. it was time to go for our first walk of the day. I got her ready to go.. We walked out the door when suddenly she stopped walking. I looked back at her to make sure she was okay. and gave her a gentle tug to start walking. she wouldn't move. I picked her up and took her into the house. I took her leash off and it was only then I saw the most terrifying thing I have ever seen. My puppie's eyes were no longer her beautiful dark brown eyes. instead they appeared to be light greenish - they almost look as if they were glowing. I screamed. what was I looking at. what happened . I rushed her to a 24-7 emergency vet. I eventually was told she had corneal ulcers in both eyes. a very painful condition. we got her medications and took her back home. now sadly she was having to wear a cone. around her head. but we were assured healing time wouldnt be too long. 6 days or so. we were told this was very common but its also every painful as her corneas had ruptured. I spent the time not dedicated to her every move. researching her condition/ I had never heard of it before. Never had any experience in my lifetime of having pets. Is a very common condition. anything from chronic rubbing of eyes - chemical reactions of household cleaning items - from playing too rough. I noticed that she had been rubbing her eyes a lot more than usual since she got home 2 days prior after her surgery. . in this midst of this new crisis we had to be back at the dentist for a follow up. We arrived the dentist said everything looked good regarding her mouth but he said I don't like the way her eyes look' and took us to an optomologist to look at her eyes. Within seconds I got heartbreaking news. My sweet one was completely blind. I just wanted to get her home while I still can see to drive . as I could feel tears just flooding out. a few days later. I called the dentist and got the shock of my life. they left her eyes OPENED during her surgery. and SAW them ulcerate. They NEVER said a word after her surgery. They tried to dismiss it afterward saying :her eyes were opened but lubricated the entire time. "and also said her eyes looked as if they had been bad for a while'. NO . my little one never had a problem with her sight until her surgery. it was BECAUSE of them. she lost her sight! read more

I'm writing this to warn other people so hopefully they don't go through what we did. I took my older dog here to check on an issue for his mouth. I didn't want a cleaning, just an evaluation of the issue. They took a quick look in the waiting room (my dog is well-trained to let you look at his mouth) but said they had to put him to sleep to really look at the issue. They came out and said they didn't know anything about the issue but they were going to do a cleaning. I had repeatedly expressed concern about a cleaning because he was an old dog and he had some health issues, but they said there was no problem. They worked on old dogs all the time and would use appropriate anesthesia for him. When they were done they came out and the doctor proudly told me how our dog had died on the table, but they had resuscitated him. The doctor seemed proud that this had happened. Obviously the stress of having been put under anesthesia for that long a time was too hard on our dog. His health degraded quickly and within weeks he had to be put to sleep. Another vet seen shortly after the dental visit said they would never put an older dog under anesthesia for even 30 minutes (let alone the very long teeth cleaning). Don't fall for the dentist telling you it is fine to clean the teeth of an older dog. I wish I had never gone to see them, we would've likely had another six months with our dog. read more

Our 8 month old kitten was diagnosed with stomatitis by our regular vet and we were told the only way to cure the condition was to remove all of his teeth. We wanted a second opinion so we contacted AZ Vet Dental Specialists and we are SO glad we did. You are getting an expert in vet dental care here! Dr. Balke found that our kitten didn't have stomatitis but cracked teeth and gingivitis. He was able to save his front teeth and canines and our kitten has never been happier and is completely out of pain. The communication was also amazing before, during and after surgery. Dr. Balke explained everything so thoroughly and I received a follow up text from him that night checking on our baby. The staff was also helpful with scheduling a follow up and keeping me up to date on how our kitten was doing during surgery. They are an absolutely amazing team! read more

Insanely expensive! There are other dental specialists out in the East Valley that are just as reputable for much less than this place costs! They want $2,102 to shave and seal a cracked canine! $400 for an hour of anesthetic alone! When I told them I would not be following through with the procedure, they charged me $145 for the consult! 10 minutes worth of a vet's time for $145! Insane!! read more

The service and care we received was outstanding, we were kept informed throughout the process. The vet even gave us her cell number in the event there were any issues after hours. We received a follow up call the next day from the office to see how our pet was doing. It was really nice not to have to worry about giving pain meds or antibiotics after the procedure because of the long-term medications they administered. I am very sad, disappointed and disgusted at the unnecessarily exorbitant fees charged by the dental specialty clinic for routine dental service. As a fellow (human) dental specialist, it pains me severely to witness this clinic take advantage of animals and their owners just because they can. I suspect that 99% of the general public would be unable to afford their services. I am well aware of the over head, education requirements, equipment and supply costs involved in running an office. Obviously they are free to charge what they want but what they do charge says so much about their motivation. I have received great service and treatment at some of the other specialty clinics at the Gilbert location however I would not return to the dental clinic. I suspect they were aware of my displeasure but seemingly had no interest in a discussion that could have precluded the need for this post. read more

My little doggie/child broke his main tooth that he uses for chewing and thankfully I noticed it before it got too infected! After a quick google search I found Arizona Veterinary Dental Specialists. I'm so happy I did! Thanks to my insurance coverage with TruPanion, most of his root canal was covered too! This is hands down the best vet experience we have ever had. Dr. Balke had me at ease from the first meeting. I was so nervous to have him go under anesthesia but knowing that Dr. Balke has his own anesthesiaologist that monitors his every moment put my mind at ease. My pup now has a brand new crown (metal) on his main eating tooth so he is back up and running and eating all his yummy foods. In addition, we have cool photos, his original tooth molds and lots of paperwork detailing his entire experience while in surgery! Way beyond expectation. The staff here is absolutely amazing! They are so friendly and patient when it comes to answering questions and addressing concerns. We were actually referred to this practice because my 10 year old cat (who had suffered some type of stroke episode a few years back) had severe dental issues/infections and the original vet said that she could perform the surgery, however, it would take her roughly 2 hours. That amount of time to be anesthetized can cause additional health complications, so she referred me to Arizona Veterinary Dental Specialists because that is where she took her own 11 year old cat for very similar issues. She said they had safely performed the procedure in about 45 minutes. Needless to say, these types of procedures, when done right, are not cheap. Even though I have Care Credit, the initial amount was out of my budget. The doctor listened to my financial situation and discounted the cost so that my baby wouldn't be in pain anymore. He could have simply turned us away, but he didn't. Dr. Coffman was so compassionate and spent a great deal of time going over my cat's health history and getting to know him in general. He didn't seem rushed and was willing to answer all of my questions. The procedure went extremely well AND the nurse even shaved off the knots on his belly while he was under; he has had some difficulty grooming himself since his stroke/episode and I didn't want to stress him out and attempt to remove the knots while he was in such pain. The doctor met with me following the procedure and, again, took the time to explain to me how everything went. They took pictures before, during, and after the surgery and put them all up on a screen for me to reference as we discussed everything. They also put together a folder with the pictures/x-rays and a detailed report of the surgery for me to take home. It has been 4 days and my cat is soooooo happy, which means that I am soooooo happy. Pain-free and looking forward to our follow-up appointment. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this practice and highly recommend them! read more

This place is top notch! I cannot thank them enough for their compassion, flexibility and kindness during a very difficult situation. The super friendly operator got me an emergency appointment with the specialist right away. The doctor had the unfortunate job of letting me know that cat has terminal cancer and the best course of action is just keeping her comfortable until she decides to stop eating, eliminating and/or drinking. He was so sympathetic, provided all of the information that we needed to know and answered all of our questions. They were proactive in following up with the other vet to get records, they asked how my pet was doing any time I called, and they are also making sure we are able to get refills of the pain medicine. I took my Rottie puppy to Arizona Veterinary Dentist on a referral from Johnson Ranch Veterinarian. The Vet there had noticed my puppy with an overbite and gave me contact info. Dr Mike Balke at Arizona Veterinary consulted with me and we agreed Charli's best option as indicated by X-Rays was to have her lower canines extracted and he would create a groove to encourage her permanent lower canines to come in, in front of the upper incisors, rather than behind them. I was unsure what exactly I was looking for and made a follow up appointment. Dr Mike was pleased with the way her teeth were coming in and asked that I bring her back in 3 weeks, which I did. Yippee, her teeth were coming in so the lowers were in front of the upper canines. She will have the scissor action as she should. I am very pleased with the outcome and recommend this place to anyone with a pet.
