I live in downtown LA and so it was a bit of a trek for me to get to her office but I do believe it was worth it because I received excellent care and I am so pleased with the results. Also, they were always very accommodating about rescheduling and squeezing me in for appointments because of the distance and the fact that my work schedule is kind of unpredictable and all over the place, so the ladies at the front desk were truly very helpful with that. It's definitely an investment, paid out of pocket, but well worth it, not just for the cosmetic results but for the health benefits as well. I came to Dr. Azar-Mehr's office check if my retainer/invisalign still fit as it had been 15 years of use. I also wanted an opinion of long term/conservative management of my bite. I had years of orthodontic treatment in as a teen and am aware that I have a malocclusion (off-bite). At the time, my parents couldn't afford surgery so we had an orthodontist who worked with us to get me to the best bite he could though it wasn't perfect. I'm happy with my aesthetics and am aware of my off-bite and it's risks. I told the office this. While taking photos and x-rays, the support staff made multiple unsolicited comments like, "Wow, does all your family have a bite like this?" They commented so much that by the time the orthodontist arrived, I reiterated that I was here to check my retainers, had some questions regarding the long term effect of my bite but that I preferred this to just be a check up. Dr. Azar-Mehr proceeded to tell me that I had a "foundation made of sand," and that any other form of dental treatment short of surgery would just be a "bandaid." She told me I needed jaw surgery AND orthodontics. She said that I likely have breathing problems and will have a whole other host of issues. I told her I had no pain, dysfunction, nor breathing problems to which she made no comment. She asked me what insurance I had to refer me to a jaw surgeon but I've never had any insurance that would cover something as expensive as a orthgnathic (jaw) surgery when the patient has no symptoms or even aesthetic concerns. As for my retainers, she glanced at them but did not check their fit on my teeth. When I mentioned my Invisalign, she did not look at my trays but stated that her office did their invisalign better. As a patient, I felt as if all my concerns and preferences were dismissed. I understand this was her professional opinion but her blunt and uncollaborative language made me feel incredibly pressured to select the most invasive/expensive treatment that didn't take into account my current goals or symptoms. After all that, I was charged a consultation fee and I still don't know if my retainers fit appropriately. read more

Azar when she was a student at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. She was a dental student and I was her instructor. Arleen distinguished herself not only as a top student, but as a leader in her class. She was not only supportive and helpful to her fellow students, but was a tremendous resource for instructors as well. She expertly completed all her requirements with ease and on time. It was no surprise when she was selected to attend prestigious graduate Orthodontic Program at USC. Upon returning from my deployment to Iraq in 2003 I purchased a dental practice in Northridge and was eager to begin a new chapter as a private practice dentist. Imagine my surprise and delight when I found out my favorite student had her orthodontic practice three miles from my office. Every orthodontic referral I have ever made as a dentist has been to Dr. Azar. She was methodical in her diagnosing and treatment of my patients. There are many ways to describe Dr. Azar and her office but I will keep it simple with, amazing! I had braces from 9-15, my wisdom teeth came in at 18, I stopped wearing my retainer because it wasn't fitting anymore (my precious orthodontist was a horrible experience) and there i was just a year later with crooked teeth, AGAIN! I went to my dentist and he specifically referred me to Dr. Azar. You'll be greeted by great staff and assistants and Dr. Azar will provide the best treatment plan for you. On top of crooked teeth, I had a jaw issue and my smile was essentially at a slope. Just with invisalign and rubber bands Dr. Azar was able to fix this. (When I called a different orthodontist, I was told I'd need surgery to fix this). 2 years of invisalign (i was projected to be 12-16 months but it took me a bit longer). And it was totally worth it. Dr. Azar gave me back my smile and my confidence and I've gotten more compliments on my teeth in the last three weeks of having my retainers than I have in years. I absolutely love the results and couldn't ask for anything else. I live in Ventura county and commuted to the office for regular visits (not as often as braces) as a full-time employee and student, and I would do it 100 times over again just to have the results I have now.
