What a fantastic event! The Kristen Kish Top Chef Showing Dinner was one of the best dinner events that we have attended. The courses were very delicious; the dining area was warm and comfortable; the wait staff were courteous, friendly and professional; and the chef interaction was enjoyable. Thanks to the great Chef Kish and sous chefs for providing and presenting a delicious meal! Special thanks to our server Gillian for being courteous, warm, friendly and professional adding to our overall satisfaction. The most satisfying and awesome experience was having Kristen Kish herself at the event. You are such a down to earth celebrity, you stopped at every table to greet diners, and made the whole experience unforgettable. You listened intently to our story of coming from such a long way just to be a part of your event and hearing that we had been following you since your comeback win on Top Chef. After the event, you even remembered us and again thanked us personally for coming such a long way prior to our departure. You didn't even mind that I had just washed my hands and didn't want to get her hand wet. You still grabbed my hand for a hand shake. You made this birthday celebration the best experience we've had in many years. Thank you to Arlo Grey, the staff, and a heartfelt thanks to you Kristen. We will be looking for other events that you might be attending. Your book is awesome and inspirational by the way! We wish you only the best for the future and will always have you in our prayers!! Sincerely, René & Trang

I'm a little surprised by Arlo Grey's 3.9 Yelp rating. For me it was a total 5-star experience. We came here Friday for my sister's birthday dinner. All I really knew going in was the Yelp rating, and I didn't know anything about Kristen Kish (sis is a big fan tho), so I wasn't carrying the same level of hype a lot of people seem to have. Maybe that helped. ‍ But here's my take. The space is beautiful. Dim, intimate, with tables spaced far enough apart that you actually feel like you're just with your own party. It's *almost* too dark and *almost* too loud, but not quite. It works for the vibe they're going for. Service was genuinely top notch. Not just our server--everyone we interacted with from hosts to food runners. Every person who brought a dish could clearly explain what was on the plate, which I really appreciate. It felt polished without being stiff. Regarding the low-ish Yelp rating, I have a couple theories. First, it seems some people come in with extremely high expectations because of the chef's reputation. And while that's understandable, it can also set the bar in a way that's almost impossible to meet--especially with a rotating menu where not every dish is designed to be a universal crowd-pleaser. Not loving a particular dish doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't well executed. Second, I feel like there are diners who... may not be as familiar with this style of restaurant. You see that reflected in complaints about portion size, pricing, or dishes being "different" or "experimental." That's more about the format than the quality. That said, some critiques are fair. I saw quite a few comments about salt levels or specific flavor balance issues, and we experienced a bit of that ourselves with one dish. But overall, a lot of the lower ratings seem less about execution and more about expectations not lining up with what this restaurant is trying to do. Now the food itself: I won't go dish-by-dish since the menu rotates, but do have notes on a few staple dishes. * The crispy rice was excellent--great texture contrast, delicious mix of flavors, really well balanced. * The pork chop was a standout. Generous portion, perfectly cooked, juicy, and easy to share. * The champignon rigatoni (which our server said is a signature) was good, but slightly on the salty side compared to everything else we had. Not a dealbreaker, just something we noticed. * The sourdough ice cream was a highlight for me--creamy, not overly sweet, really well done. However, sourdough "tuile" topping didn't quite land. It tasted more bready than anything, almost like croutons on ice cream. But easy enough to ignore and just enjoy the ice cream. * The monkey bread split our table--two people loved it, two were just okay on it. Very much depends on whether you like bready desserts. Oh, and the wine list! Small, curated, and solid--but definitely leans premium. It would be nice to see one or two more accessible options, just to round it out. Bottom line: This is a really well-executed, thoughtfully run restaurant with great service and a strong overall experience. If you go in expecting big portions or super traditional flavors, you might be disappointed. If you go in understanding the style of restaurant it is, it absolutely delivers.

On my trip to Austin, I knew I had to try Kristen Kish's restaurant as a big fan from her days of being a contestant on Top Chef. I was so happy that her restaurant in the Line Hotel (first floor) was absolutely delicious! The dining room was dim vibes, we saw a more senior fellow using his phone for a light to read the menu. They actually turned the lights a bit brighter towards the end of our dinner. Really cute dining room with different styled seating, just very sleek and chic. Staff was really friendly, prompt, perfectly timed everything and very detailed about every dish. Those ingredient descriptions aren't easy and they were all so well informed! Many recommended the grilled sourdough and I understand it. It's a really unique spin on bread, but we got our dose with the Burrata appetizer ($18). I'm a cheese addict so always love a big ball of dairy, but this dish was pretty special. We were really impressed with the accompanying components which melded together perfectly. Highly recommended. For our mains, my friend and I continued the creamy carbs and had the Rabbit Ragu Fusili ($24) and Lasagna ($26). Both are great dishes but the Lasagna won of the two for me, thanks in small part to the fun & artistic cheesy crust. The dish was just top tier classic dish with an inventive spin to elevate it to just the right level. Get the lasagna! I wish I had room for dessert as the grilled sourdough ice cream was so intriguing. But alas, I couldn't do it but hope you'll give that a go and let me know how it was! Cheers to Arlo Grey!

Before we get into the food, people are the first interaction that patrons receive upon walking into an establishment. Let's just say Brandon (Bartender) and David (server who came later) left such an amazing impression on my family. Their passion for their craft and work translated to an amazing experience and meal that we still talk about today. Thank you for making our holidays that much more special to the two of you. Food wise, hands down, spectacular. All their items have such amazing flavors and texture. They each expressed restraint and balance of ingredients that highlights the collective dish. It was so propelling that my family, all 13 me members, voted to cancel our following evening plans to revisit the establishment for a full on meal. Restaurant is clean, beautiful, and well maintained by the staff. We shared our experience with Gwyneth, the manager, and encouraged her to continue holding this standard at this establishment. If you are looking for amazing food, top notch staff (like David and Brandon), and memories to cherish, this place will be the topic of discussion and recollection for years to come. Great job team! Love what you have done for us :)

Arlo Grey was one of the highlights of our Christmas trip to Austin. The restaurant is located inside the beautiful LINE Hotel, with a modern and minimalist design. All the staff members were friendly and professional. Brandon and David went above and beyond to create a memorable experience for our family. One could tell how much they care about their crafts and guest satisfaction. Food and drinks were amazing, from concepts to execution. We tried almost everything on their winter menu and all of the desserts. My personal favorites were all of their pastas, sourdough ice cream, and monkey bread. Thank you for the food, the company, and the memories, Arlo Grey team! We look forward to coming back.

First time in Austin and I had to check Kristen's Kish Restaurant. If you don't know her, she's a Top Chef Winner and the host of the show. Well for sure she knows what she's doing. Her food was so delicious. The roasted grouper with that sauce was amazing. On top of the delicious food, the service was fantastic. The vibe in the restaurant was very chill and great location. This is a must if you're a foodie.

Didn't have any expectations for this restaurant, but I was quite disappointed. The menu selection is pretty small. The restaurant was only 30% full on a Saturday night but it was pretty loud. I couldn't see the colors of my dishes because it was so dark. The food didn't stand out, but it wasn't terrible to eat. The best thing I can say about the dessert, was that it was different. The Flor De Aplos non-alocoholic drink was probably the best thing I had here. It's a berry infused drink with a drop of a vinegar-like substance, giving it a hint of sweetness and a touch of tang. The complexion allows me to pace the drink as I eat my meals. The Roasted Acorn Squash was my starter. The squash was similar to a steamed potato without the heavy starch. Not sure if the squash itself was intentionally bland, but the surrounding elements were pretty neat. The acorns and cilantro gave it a nice texture and contrasting colors. I wish the spicy bits were a bit stronger, but that's admittedly just my preference. The puree is definitely the star of the plate, giving each bite a level of sweetness and savoriness. I had the Half Chicken Milanese for my main. The meat had a nice cook and was splendidly moist. It was a bit too salty for my liking, but it was passable. However the accompanied vegetables felt out of place and random. I appreciate the variety in fiber, but the combination of Okra, Corn, and Cauliflower didn't compliment the protein. I couldn't tell if the Milanese had a special preparation outside of the breading and salt (since the restaurant was too dark); it would have been nice if the chicken had some acidity or was sprinkled with something. The Monkey bread was a pretty big disappointment. I've never had Monkey bread before, so it's possible that I'm just not a fan of the dessert. Either way, it was really lacking in the sweet department. Pairing it with ice cream (like a cream puff) would really elevate this dessert. On top of that, the boba was incredibly stale. Was it intentional? I'm really trying to give the dessert the benefit of the doubt, but I would've tragically been more happier with a regular scoop of sorbet. All in all, the dishes were pretty expensive and left more to be desired. I'm actually interested in trying the pasta dishes, but I did not want my first impressions of this restaurant to be their pasta tapas. However my curiosity is not strong enough for me to want to come back.

I loved loved loved my experience at Arlo Grey. I was in Austin for work stay at the Line hotel where Arlo Grey is located. The food is amazing! We started with the sourdough bread which it is a must have. The pasta dishes we had for the main were also so delicious and unique. Both perfectly cooked and such good flavors. The only complaint I have is that I couldn't try more things! I hope I get to be back in Austin to try the other items on the menu I would highly recommend Arlo Grey for any occasion, but especially for special occasions! It will not disappoint

    Fried Steamed Buns

Came here for dinner on a Friday evening. We made a reservation but it doesn't seem like we would've had too much of a wait if we didn't. It was a fairly rainy evening so I'm guessing this was on the lighter side traffic wise. We shared 5 small plates and overall had a good experience! I liked the way they thoughtfully brought out the dishes in groups or individually to make the meal more of an experience. Fancier new American usually isn't my jam but I enjoyed my meal here more than I was expecting to Our favorite dish of the meal was the fried steamed buns. The buns had a fantastic lightly sweet and almost creamy taste. I loved the Gruyère that the broccoli was served in. It takes a lot for me to call the meat in a dish secondary but it really paled in comparison to the rest of the dish The grilled oyster mushrooms had a really good lightly spiced flavor and rich texture. The cauliflower I thought paired really nicely with the hot mustard aioli. Our last 2 dishes were definitely the weakest. The crispy bits of the lasagna were really tasty but overall very salty. I wasn't a fan of the texture they got on the crispy rice, and I think a different add in other than green beans would've worked better. The non green bean bites had an interesting almost breakfast sandwich like taste that I enjoyed Overall we had a good experience! Probably won't be top of mind to come back to, but if it's something that caught your eye I think it worth checking out

This was on my list for a while - so glad I finally made the commitment. Everything from start to finish was perfect. We started off with the burrata and cauliflower. The burrata had this amazing sunchoke confit and we ate every bite. I had been trying to convince my parents to join the cauliflower revolution and this convinced them. Just the perfect amount of crisp and the hot honey aioli was a match made in heaven. The pork chop and the rigatoni were our main courses and the rigatoni was such a hit!

Terrific burrata and Rigatoni! Super friendly service, and excellent cocktails. Would come back here any day.....

I loved Arlo Grey! We came for our anniversary and the food was spectacular! In true transparency, Foodwise, I would probably would rate it as a 4.5 stars because my non-sophisticated palette husband had difficulty comprehending the menu. The dishes are very unique and if you like more straight-forward food, this may not be the dining experience for you. We ordered the fried cauliflower (so delicious!), Bucatini (this one was a bit unique for my palette even), and the Berkshire Pork Chop (so tender and perfectly flavored) with a side of French fries. Since it was our anniversary, the server even comped us a slice of Fluffy cheesecake, which I thought was delicious because I love matcha flavor. My husband was not impressed because it was a fluffy, more Japanese style cheesecake and he was expecting a NY style cheesecake. Service, as mentioned, was friendly, but it was definitely an experience. The staff even wrote us a Happy Anniversary card, great attention to detail. We had a reservation for 7:30, but did not finish our meal until 10:30 because the food took a long time to all come out. The food came out in courses and we shared all the dishes, as was recommended. The coursed meal and dim lighting definitely made it a very romantic atmosphere. It is a great place for a fancy date night or a celebration.

We were visiting Austin and decided to check out Arlo Grey (my whim! - huge Kristen Kish fan). Started off with the grilled sourdough with burrata and olives. I ordered the fusilli with rabbit and my husband ordered the pork chop. I had a bite of my SIL's brick chicken too. Everything was delicious. Service and ambience were great. So happy we went!

Ask the Community - Arlo Grey by Kristen Kish

    Is reservation recommended or required?

Yes, you will most likely need a reservation in advance.

Has anyone met Chef Kish? Going there for my bday this Sat and would love to meet her. I am a big fan.

Yes!!! Sometimes she isn't there, maybe call ahead and check :)

Is there a parking lot or street parking?

    Street+ valet parking

Do you need a reservation for the week days?

    Recommended but not required.

Is this location 18&up? Will you be open this weekend? Cover charge? Thanks in advance!😊

It's also a restaurant, so I don't believe there is an age restriction if you're ordering food. There's no cover charge and I'd imagine they would be open at the weekend.

Can one see the flight of the bats when dining here? If so what time is best and what seats? Thx in advance.

I have no problem with their policy, but I bet a lot of customers do. Enjoyed a French 75, my husband enjoyed a smoked Old Fashioned and it was a great place to grab a drink prior to seeing Springsteen at the Moody seated amongst candles , a weird alter of sorts while enjoying some Stevie Wonder as is playing now though some weird NIN or Type O might have been more appropriate

I went to Whisler's and had one of the worst bar experiences I've ever had…read more I had one drink. I was completely sober for all intents and purposes. The bartender claimed I was drunk and cut me off anyway. I was at the bar talking to a girl while waiting to get a drink (the wait was long because the service is very slow, despite the bar not being very busy at all). She was clearly into me, and the bartender kept jumping in trying to talk to her too (instead of doing his job making drinks). He was doing all sorts of things to try and flirt with her and make her laugh: pulling out and showing her buckets of pre mixed cocktails, running and sliding under the bar, etc. She was engaging with both of us , and right in the middle of that, I get cut off out of nowhere. No explanation other than claiming I looked drunk, which I very clearly wasn't. It felt very clear what was going on--he wanted me out of the way. I left and asked the bouncer on my way out if I seemed drunk. This was literally two minutes later. He said no, not at all, and asked me why I would even ask that. I then told him exactly what happened and asked him to let the owner or whoever was in charge know about this extremely unprofessional conduct so they can discipline the bartender. His response was that the bartender has discretion to cut anyone off, and let me know the bartender is supposedly married so he couldn't have been flirting with any of the customers. Well, sounds like his logic is flawed--not only COULD he flirt with his customers, he WAS, and was therefore cheating. I hope his wife finds out. This is perfectly representative of Austin customer service lately and not normal in other places. I was in Tampa for an entire month earlier this year and this would've been unthinkable there. I'm not coming back.
