The armadillo den is a really great venue with some hiccups. First the good: it's a big area, full with chairs, tables strawn throughout and multiple food trucks. The beer list isn't too long, but covers all the bases and the cocktails are good. One disappointment on the cocktails is inconsistencies between bartenders. We had some spicy chicken from the food truck and fried pickles. They were great. So overall, it's a great place to relax with friends and chill. We liked it and will be back regularly. read more

Visiting from out of town for F1 weekend and our Airbnb was located in South Austin, which was conveniently a 5 minute drive from Armadillo Den. We ended up liking this place so much we went 3 times in like a week since it was so close! Some nights are really chill, and just vibing to the live music is super fun and just enjoying a few beers with food truck food. Other nights are really packed and fun and you see a lot of big groups out and about in the area. Also watching football here was really enjoyable. The drink selection is really solid, lots of beers and a few cocktails. The bartenders are really fast so there wasn't much of a wait. Surprisingly their alternative to a espresso martini was actually really good. It was my first time going, but I love a good open-air outdoor patio bar. That's why places like Radio are always a go-to on my list. Unlike Radio off Manchaca, Armadillo Den has plenty of parking, but you have to get lucky if you don't want to pay. The front lot is free, but their secondary overflow lot is $15. Don't let the cost of parking ruin your expectations because parking sucks in Austin, period. If you have love in your heart, parking is easy. They also offer 10% off the tab if you rideshare, so consider that if you're nearby and wanting to visit. They ID you at the door after 6 pm. There's a sign that tells you if you have an evil dog, they are not allowed. People's evil dogs are my enemy. Inside, there is plenty of space to sit outside with a cute and small indoor area where the bar is located. There are five food trucks with different cuisines and live music bumping. Inside, they have plenty of beers on tap from locals like Pinthouse and 512, as well as your domestics like Yuengling and Michelob. There are also plenty of bottles and cans. They have a great list of cocktails, mocktails, and margaritas as well. They currently have a Nitro Carajillo on tap (currently one of my favorite cocktails), so I drank two of those as well as a canned Gatorade to get my electrolytes up. They also happen to sell smokes here? The environment just feels perfect to bum a cig at, so it makes sense they have 'em. The bartender suggested to just Uber Eats them because of the markup, but when you want a drunk cig you'll pay whatever price you can for some Reds. It's an overall cool place. However, we came on a Friday night and the live band was not great and so loud. It was close to impossible to speak to friends, even if you tried to get as far away as possible from the band. Other than the sound - which likely is not as bad on nights without live music, my only other gripe was parking. Best to not try to park here and Uber if you can. It seems alternative to their small lot are an adjoining lot for $11 or trying your luck in the neighborhood across the street, but then having to run across a very busy road. Note that because it was so full, the parking lot was near also full - I got lucky to find a single spot but there was a valet area and I was worried I'd have to end up paying (thankfully I didn't). I love that this place is so close to my house. The only reason it got four stars is due to parking. The parking lot is tiny. I don't know where people park if they don't get a spot. There is a shopping center across the street but Manchaca is a busy road. I don't want to cross that on foot? They have mister fans and lots of seating. What defines a town? I've lived across the US in six different states and when I moved here in June 2021 I was on a quest to find out Austin was all about. Well, it took me almost two years but I submit Armadillo Den is a shining example of a great place to represent Austin. Austin is interesting as it's a southern version of Dog Town USA because of culture and the abundance of love for the furry pets. Driving up with my head out the window and my tongue flapping we drive up to Armadillo Den, my date quibbled "are we in the boonies?" Well, no we're just outside of Austin and close to my house in Kyle. We entered the grounds and I pointed out how the barren the lands look juxtaposed the trees randomly adorning the interior and lined the property line as well. Inside the confines resides a cool feature, a place for dogs to run in the back. It was soothing seeing a bunch of Fidos running around in the cool winter night. Another observation of the seemingly required element are the Xmas lights "strung up with care". I think it's a bit overplayed but it does add fun vibe to the air. The water bowl aka bar area is very open and easily accessible even when there's a crowd. The prices are reasonable, the selection plentiful and the bartenders are fast and good at slinging suds. There is a plethora of beers on tap to make a leg shake as if someone is scratching your belly. Now if your paws are tired, there are long tables inside and, on the patio, but the majority are in the courtyard. Another aspect of Austin are the food trucks. I believe I counted 5 with differing goodies to enjoy. I had already had dinner so I didn't indulge in tasty treats but I did inquire with the fellow patrons and they swore it was delectable. What I really found rustic are the long picnic tables in the courtyard between the stage and main building housing the bar. This provides a great atmosphere to get to know your fellow Austinite and just for a fleeting moment to be human with canines. Yes, I think human interaction is important especially now adays. Looking on from the dog pound, the stage and music it's almost an homage to our inner redneck but in a grounded way that won't leave you howling at the moon. To the right of the stage is huge TV for watching whatever is available and in our case college BB. On the stage is a bus. I have no clue why it's there but it does add an element of interest. Perhaps it's to ease the tension of high-strung dogs that love to chase moving targets. The band that was playing was entertaining which completed the laid back ambiance. Overall, I highly suggest Armadillo den whether you're going by yourself, have a furry companion or with a date that includes drinks, food or good music. Also note there are some cool swings on the premises which provides great photo ops. I felt safe while there as all the people seem to be there just to enjoy a night out at a cool establishment. The online ordering app was nice but it canceled my Margarita and the bartender didn't offer a different option. It was weird bc I've never had a bar just say no The app would be better if they had pictures, reviews, and had pick up in a better location. You have to go to the end of the bar - there is no clear path in and out so you have to "bob and weave" through dog leashes, standing table tops, and groups to the small dark corner. Parking is extremely limited and I highly recommend sharing a Lyft! The business offered 10% off for taking a ride-share on their website but the drink ordering app didn't offer any discount option and the food truck didn't give us one in person either. So I'm not sure how to get the 10% off?! Overall a fun atmosphere but definitely be prepared for crowds!
