Was looking forward to finally trying this place. Went with a group of 8 tonight, for a birthday, and received the absolute worst service. I had to wait for my chair -there wasn't enough- wasn't given water, after repeatedly yelling over the blaring music for a glass water, never came- the entire meal and no water. Asked for just silverware, never came. I was the only one without silverware, mean, SILVERWARE. I asked twice, each time "water and silverware please". Ignored. It was absolutely incredible. I would have gotten up and left if I wasn't there for a birthday. I ended up using someone else's fork when my meal came. Screw it, I was over the whole thing. The waiter was so neglectful and disinterested it was insulting. Finally when he came back, after he apparently went for a walk in the moonlight to Austin and back, I asked (again) for water, and silverware, he took my order, then, you guessed it, ignored me. Complete dick. I was honestly bewildered as to what was going on, he knew he was going to get auto-grat and didn't have to try to even be professional ? How ridiculous. It was 9pm on a Thursday, it was busy, but come on. WATER. UTENSILS! The place seemed like a neat place to go, the food wasn't bad, but having horrible service completely killed it. My husband and I were invited to go try Armando's by the owner himself. It was really high end looking has valet outside so far so good. We went in and the hostess treated us so good because she was aware that we were coming as a gust of the owner. We got a booth and the first thing I noticed was the paper on the tables instead of table clothes. It was kind of weird but after my husband said that it is smart to have paper on top because they save money on cleaning and it made sense so pretty clever. The waiter served us really good, and he brought us the starter of chips and dip. It took us a few minutes to decide what to order. We made our order my husband got the quesadilla and I got tacos al carbon. I was really impressed because like 5 minutes later we got our food wow that was fast, and when it came time to taste the food it was good, but honestly the best Mexican food is in those whole in the wall taqueria places now that food is good. But over all the food was great. This place deserves another visit soon that's for sure. We really enjoyed our stay the service was amazing, they truly made us feel like royalty. read more

Nice atmosphere, but the food was just ok, at best. The service was fine, but nothing special. There were 3 of us, but we only ordered 2 meals and 2 drinks to share. We ordered small cup of queso, 1 single order of fajitas, a guacamole tostada, a house margarita, and a glass of wine. The portions were really small. The beef fajitas were tough. Armandos is a white tablecloth Tex Mex restaurant serving up a few decent vegetarian items in Upper Kirby. I visited with a few friends on a Saturday night. This was my second time to Armandos, the first being about a year ago. I wasn't Yelping at the time, but I did fill out a Southwest Dining review to get my 10 extra Southwest miles. Yes, I'm that shameless. But I took time writing that review, noting how hard it was to find anything vegetarian in the menu. I also mentioned not being sold on the idea of upscale Tex Mex, which a colleague told me is a bit racist. But, it is a sentiment my hispanic barber shared with me recently. ANYWAY, Armandos actually emailed me after I finished the review, explaining how they planned to make changes to make the menu easier to navigate, and how the service the provided was top notch. I still have that email today. And you know what? The service was awesome, and the ambiance was fantastic. I noted this to my friends: you could hear everyone at the table talking, even though the restaurant was loud. I don't know what kind of acoustics voodoo was going on (my roommate said it was probably because the tables are small). I ordered the poblano tamales. The plate came with a side of gallo pinto, which is this black bean rice, and pico de gallo. The tamales were tasty. The cornmeal shell was filled with poblano peppers, cheese, and onions. The dish came with two small toppings to put atop the tamales: a darker salsa and a queso. It's a bit on the pricier side, but I'd come back if I were looking for decent Tex-Mex in a finer atmosphere. read more

I went to this restaurant last night to celebrate my sister in laws birthday with the family. It was our first time there and will surely be my last time. The food quality was not up to the standard of the "fine dining" establishment that it is trying to be. Ordered Chillis con queso and it was very watery. I can make better at home. I will say the lady bartending was awesome and very attentive. Our waiter on the other hand was very condescending, I could tell that he had type casted me and my family because we are not "regulars". The food for the main course was mediocre at best. Everything is overpriced for the quality. The main thing that ruined the experience for me was the fact that they restaurant didn't want to split the check, which is not the issue but the way the waiter handled it. He said that he could take multiple forms of payments we just needed to let him know how much to put on each card. So we did ALL the math for him down to the penny and wrote it out on the back of the check for him. He still ended up overcharging one of the cards. Though he did apologize and fixed the issue he made it clear that it's our fault that HE made the mistake. He said "that's why we don't split checks". As I said, I have no plans on returning but I hope that you can receive this feedback and take action to improve. I understand food service is a very difficult business to run and that people make mistakes but there's a lot of negative going on from my perspective. The food is undeniably good... You'll love the food! The people on the outside of this restaurant are very rude. The first time we came here there was a guy calling us nig*gers and saying we didn't belong in the area. The manager apologized and asked if we would like for him to call the police. Today we came for drinks and food. There was a lady pulling out from another establishment and we took that parking space. The valet ran us down stating we couldn't park there it was for valet. We advised him that the lady that was parked there was at another business and there isn't a cone there. He rudely told us we couldn't park there and he saw the man that pulled out, which there was a woman that was parked there. He advised us well the woman must have been at work and we would be towed. Both times I have come to this restaurant there has been an issue with just getting inside with out being confronted for something. It's only getting two stars for the CHIPS and MARGARITAS. We ordered an appetizer and three meals. By the time we sat down, ordered drinks and food and waited, it was 45 minutes. We never got the appetizer. The food tasted like it was sitting under heat lamps. It's my parents anniversary, and they had a horrible experience. Probably our worst dining experience since our time in Houston. First they shoved us in the bar area and the tables are VERY small. Our waiter, Raymond Torres, obviously hates his job. He was very short with us, and didn't even go over the specials, luckily we overheard the waiter at the table next to us. We didn't even know they had specials as this was our first visit. All he did was stand two feet from our table and stare and wait for us to order. Once we ordered he just grabbed our menus and walked off, and said not one more word to us the entire time. I don't know how much fancier you can make a Mexican restaurant, but Armandos is pretty high up on the totem pole. The salsa is fresh, the drinks are delicious (love the margaritas and mojitos), the food (enchiladas, lobster, fish tacos--oh my!) and desserts (sopapillas and tres leches are bomb) are pretty good, and the service is decent. I'd say their main dishes are typical for standard Mexican fare, it's not like you can really make it gourmet. Just add even more butter and cheese to the dishes and you've got what everyone else has in Houston. The atmosphere is nice, sophisticated and comfortable. The place isn't too big, so reservations are handy during peak times. Valet is annoying when there's a ton of spots still available, but I guess it comes with the territory when they're technically in River Oaks. read more

I've got some good news, and some bad news. Which do you want first? Good? Nice- I like your style. I hate to start a review I paid $90.00 for with the bad stuff... The service was very nice. Our waiter was funny and endearing, he added something to the experience and never flinched at our somewhat unusual payment phase (4 people, 2 checks, Some cash off the whole bill, then split the rest, Oops that was the wrong card! Etc..) He got it all done with a smile. The Salsa Rojas was excellent in both variations that were served. The Chips were authentic- thick and rich. Not diet food. The refried beans... DEAR GOD- Bacon grease in beans... unbelievable. I could have been happy with a plate of just the beans and rice. In retrospect- I should have... The bad- I'm almost sorry to have to have to write this because the places personality was endearing. The ceviche was uninspired at the very least, and just plain bad if you really want to consider the price. I certainly expected something to at least compare to Hugo's delightful Ceviche Verde. No dice. Crab Enchiladas- talk about something that should be a decadent, rich, home-run. This iteration was a sloppy base hit. There is no doubt that the crab meat was packaged lower grade White Crab meat, dry and grainy. It actually smelled fishy from within the Enchilada. When my date stopped eating them at 1/4 of the way through, I thought it must be just her... I tasted them and immediately agreed. My Enchiladas continued the precession of poor execution. I don't have much to say about them except that I guarantee I could make better beef Enchiladas right this very moment. Armando- go have dinner at El Tiempo, THOSE are some beef enchiladas. You should have a tasting with some trusted pallets who aren't just stroking your ego or justifying their $100 tex-mex dinner. We had a good time though. Armandos is a great place for a party when you don't want to break the bank and you want something casually fancy. I attended a rehearsal dinner here where we had the private room overlooking the main dining room. Though the walls are glass, the room is amazingly sound proof. Our menu was set but contained the typical options for choice. Appetizers were freshly fried tortilla chips with guacamole, chili con queso, and salsa. I could eat all of that continuously and be happy. For my entree, I chose the enchiladas verde. Mole was a choice but I heard some describe it as "bitter". I was really excited to eat Tex Mex but found the food at Armandos lacking in flair. At best, it is on par with El Torito. The end of the night had me reminiscing about Chevy's and scheming on how to squeeze in time to try Pappasito's. The enchiladas verde were decent and stuffed with chicken. The sauce wasn't too much. The rice was okay and I found the refried beans really good. The texture wasn't of the norm. It was gritty rather than smooth and it had the taste of bacon. Y-E-S. Dessert was sopapillas and churros. I love anything fried with cinnamon and dipped in honey. Enough said. Armandos is festive and fun. The decor is fancy and aside from the menu and name, you wouldn't really know it was a Mexican restaurant. The drinks looked smashing and the tequila shots are on the larger side. The parking lot was huge and the restaurant was packed. I found it a bit silly there was valet. It's not like there's a shortage of parking space in the area. Armando's isn't meant to be a Tex-Mex restaurant. It is meant to be a true Mexican cuisine restaurant- they fail. True Mexican food is meant to be complex... it is a true Fusion food- It combines the bold flavors of the Mexican vegetation and spices with the meats the Spaniards brought with them and the rich, buttery sauces the French brought with them. Armando's food is completely underwhelming, but I kept coming back because of its convenient location and their sunday brunch which offers $10 filet mignon tacos, that are totally edible. However, my last visit was truly the last. Apart from the lack of quality in the food and the inexperienced wait staff, who didn't offer dessert or tell us the specials of the day, my main entree, which is my favorite dish from any cuisine in the world, was NOT WHAT I HAD ORDERED. I ordered the Chile en Nogada, which literally means "Pepper in Walnut Sauce." The sauce was basically sour cream- a sin, so large that puts Armando's in Dante's 8th Circle of Hell!!! I had my first taste of Armando's out of their fancy taco truck and I was hooked. I've never had anything so delicious out of a truck before! (Incidentally, I heard from Armando himself that he spent $100K on that truck and it's available for catering!) After such a taco truck treat, I had to go to the restaurant itself and see what they could do with a full sized kitchen and I was not disappointed. First, even though there was a wait for a table, the restaurant itself is beautiful. Second, the drinks, although pricey, are just as good as the food. Third, the service is right on. Everything on the table tasted just as I wanted it to. And, although it's not cheap, it's not outrageously priced either. It's worth every penny. Excellent work, Armando! read more

BUT, I realize now that I have been blinded by the oodles and oodles of bling on my fellow clientele... these womens jewelry, purses, and facelifts are amazing... not so much the food. VERY GOOD, yes. But nowhere near as good as el tiempo, escalantes, lupe tortilla, molinas, and even el patio! And for the price tag, well ya know. BUT, if you have people from out of town that want to be impressed by a fancy mexi restaurant, or you possibly have a group event and want to do it big, this place is PERFECT. It's not that the food at Armando's is bad, but it's just that they charge so much for something Chuy's does better next door. It's hard to be a Mexican restaurant on the corner of Kirby and Westheimer, because you're competing with 5 other ones in the immediate area. Here's the lowdown on Armando's: the place is snazzy for sure. Post Oak Grill used to be in this space, and the opulent decor hasn't changed much. The atmosphere is great for a date. The food is ok, but green bell peppers as the only seasoning in crabmeat enchiladas was just weird. Olives in ceviche? Maybe you'll like it, but no dice for me. The good things about Armandos include the fact that they are very generous to charities and they have great service. Any place that will so generously donate to help people out is a place I'll patronize. Also, Jim, our server, was just the nicest person (he used to work at Brennan's before it burned down). Will I go back? Sure...I'll give it another chance to see if the kitchen had an off night that one time, but they had better put some 18K gold leaf on that food to make it worth $16 for a plate of enchiladas. read more

I thought this place was very pretty and fancy for a mexican restaurant (white table cloths and lots of rich looking people). In fact, my sister and I invented a game called "FACELIFT?" here. The premise of the game is simple... you guess upon their entrance which women have had face lifts Seriously, we identified (I believe with (90% accuracy) approximately 4 over the course of about an hour and a half.. Oh yeah, and we saw a brand new Lamborghini parked outside in valet (yep, he was with one of the facelift ladies!) Now, as for service.. everyone seemed to get great service here. Everyone except for us! We think our waiter was new. Spoke very softly and hard to understand and looked young. Took forever with our chips, queso, etc. I would give this place a two just for that but, everyone else seemed to be receiving very good service so for the sake of the review, I will let it go. Queso (which we added beef to) was great. Chips pretty darn good too. We split tacos al carbon. Beef was excellent. Chicken was good but, not tender or juicy enough. Now. the thing that really stood out to me. Their TWICE refried beans. They are a different color than I would have expected, are really shiny (grease), and resemble canned dog food. But, don't let the odd look fool you.. AMAZING! My first marg on the rocks was good but, I preferred my sis' frozen one (I usually think rocks are better but, in this case their frozens are best). My second marg was a top shelf. I felt it was worse than my first (which was 3 dollars cheaper). Stick with frozen regular if you come here! The service was hands-down the worst I've ever had in my life. I don't know if it was because my boyfriend and I were at least 20 years younger than the rest of the clientele, but there was really no excuse. We waited at least fifteen minutes after we sat down for anyone to approach the table at all. then our waiter didn't greet us, just dropped off some menus. He did not actually look me in the eye until he asked if we wanted dessert. So bizarre at a nice place. I always tip 20 percent regardless of the service because I know too many people who have worked in the industry. He got himself only 15 percent when he went up to the table beside us as I was signing the check, greeted them with a huge smile, and initiated some pleasant chit-chat. Made me feel like chopped liver. Food: ceviche as an appetizer was delicious!! Chunks of tilapia and shrimp, mixed with tomato and onion, all on a bed of avocado and infused with lime. My boyfriend and I had our Mexican staples: chicken enchiladas verdes and fajitas. I liked mine better than some recent meals elsewhere. He said the fajitas were better at Antonio's. Armando's has been famous for Thursday night dancing for years, and the crowd keeps coming back for more cheesy wedding pop music. We visited for Cinco de Mayo, and not only did the ambiance fail us, the food, service, and management did as well. Severely disappointed, and we will never be back. See the below for details. ATMOSPHERE: Dark, and boring. It seems to us that they were going for upper scale / semi formal, but with the dark lighting and maroonish walls it was really somewhat depressing. There was very little about this restaurant that felt "Spanish" or "Mexican" to me, and especially on a day like Cinco de Mayo which is supposed to be festive, this was a particular let down. FOOD: We had several plates, as we were a party of 8. Carne Asada with steak and shrimp was the majority of dinners. Mine was cold, others were lukewarm, and the accompanying rice was cold, a turnoff. The shrimp LOOKED lovely, but mine had a very black, very long hair wrapped around it. If you're going to charge these prices, I want mine hairless, thanks... Enough said. SERVICE: Horrible. The server(s) were somewhat rude to us, told us about the special but failed to mention the price, and when I finally got their attention about the above mentioned hair, They took my plate and left me foodless for 5 full minutes while others ate and I had nothing, without so much as an apology. A side note worth mentioning, this is in a small strip mall, and yet they have the nerve to offer "valet" parking for a fee. This means that some guys with very little skill take your keys and shoehorn your car into a cluster in the lot. Getting it back can easily be a 35 minute process (!!) while they fumble with 10 other keys and cars trying to figure out how to get to yours... avoid! VALUE: Abysmal. The specials we had were $35 each, unbeknownst to us until the check came. For 8 people including drinks, the total was $609.50... this included a 20% tip they automatically added (now I get the rude service - they were getting paid regardless), AND my entrée regardless of the fact there was a hair. When I complained about it, the manager finally came over and said "OH - I forgot" - no sorry, no extra compensation, nothing. Folks, this is Texas, and there are hundreds of better themed, better tasting Mexican options outside this place --- don't be fooled, and spend your money elsewhere. read more

My party was a party of 7 and our waiter was non the less horrible and did not deserve a 83$ tip we were celebrating daughters birthday and poor baby had the worse experience here. They charged 15$ just to cut a damn birthday cake and did not even chime in to sing happy birthday. The food is not even authentic. And very overrated. We will not be eating here ever again. What a weird place! Let me finish...what a weird and awesome place! This is the fanciest mexican restaurant BY FAR that I have ever been to. It's classy and sophisticated and the crowd and atmosphere made me feel like a hobo in my jeans and t-shirt. But who expects there to be a dress code (at least an unwritten one) at a Mexican restaurant? Anyway, even though I was severely under-dressed, and completely thrown off guard, it was great to experience something different! The funny thing, is that the fmenu is exactly the same as any other mexican restaurant, it's just outrageously priced! I know that doesn't sound like a good thing, but you're paying for the relaxing atmosphere, you're paying to be pampered by the waiter. You're paying for the surprisingly delicious and high quality tortilla chips in a fancy cone that are already on your table when you sit down. If those things aren't important to you and a $20 mexican dinner isn't in your budget, then this place isn't for you at all. But if you have the money and you're feeling classy, this place is actually really good. I ordered the chili relleno, and instead of the cheesy greasy crap you usually get, this had deliciously flavored meat and a chipotle cream sauce on top. The fajitas are also not bathed in oil. Somehow they make grilled chicken delicious without all the nasty stuff that most places use, and that's worth something to me. This place made me realize that you don't have to add queso, or tons of cheese to make mexican food good and I am grateful for that. read more

This restaurant is beautiful! If you're looking for a place to have a really nice dinner but find that you're really just in the mood for tex-mex, you might want to check out Armandos. As I said initially, the restaurant itself is really pretty inside, the service is attentive, and the margaritas are excellent (top shelf tequila all the way)! The crowd is definitely interesting (can you say cougar??). I ate chicken enchiladas that were just what chicken enchiladas should be. The verde sauce was perfecto! My only real gripe about Armando's is that I'm not sure its worth what they're charging. However, I often feel that you pay as much for ambience as you do for food, so Armando's probably does deliver. P.S. Most of their dishes are made with corn tortillas, there are no CC issues with the chips, and they were very helpful with my gluten free questions in general. So we frequent this place almost every Thursday night, because at 10pm they move aside the tables and open up the dance floor. You must make a reservation to ensure a table since they are always packed. The crowd here is generally good looking with a female majority, which is why my group of friends likes to go. While the food is very good, it is on the pricey side for Tex-Mex and the margaritas are not strong enough for their price. The green salsa is the best I've ever had, however the waiters are not nice if you sit at a table just wanting to eat salsa and drink until the music starts. Super tiny place with some expensive drinks was my first thought, the margaritas were around $10. I like the decor but I have to admit that the picture in the "atrium" scared the crap out of me. Was that Armando?? I liked it in a weird way, almost makes me want a self portrait to place by my front door. The lighting was pretty sexy, low and it seemed like everybody was on a first date. Small bar area made it hard to order a drink while waiting on a table but it wasn't impossible. Once we got the attention of the bartender my night made a swift turn to wonderful. Absolutely love how they serve chips and salsa. I really appreciate that it wasn't served in a basket but a cone like contraption that was very pretty to look at. The salsa was ok. I wanted and wished for some more heat but like all chips and salsa I couldn't stop eating it. For dinner I decided to go with Verde chicken enchiladas. I really enjoyed the salsa but once again the heat was absent. The cheese was smooth and not overly packed into this great little corn tort. Also the chicken was SUPER tender. I wanted more of that stuff! They offer black beans which I am a crazy fan of. They were delicious and the rice was great as well. We went to Armandos for dinner at 8. I did feel bad because they closed at 9, and our waiter showed some annoyance. He wasn't super chatty and very quiet so it was hard to hear him when he did speak. The food did come out fast. As soon as we ordered, the food was out in about 10 minutes. Although for the price of the food, I expected more. The queso was just typical that you can find anywhere. I got the crab enchiladas and they weren't bad by any means, but for the price, I wasn't overly impressed. The place itself was cute and charming. I did enjoy that aspect of it. Love this place. High end Mexican with authentic Mexico City vibe. Great atmosphere. Only downside is their hours
