When we asked to close out our tab, the bartender brought us a receipt with a QR code that allowed us to pay directly from our phone. I scanned the code, completed the payment, and received confirmation thanking us for our payment. As we were walking to our vehicle, the same bartender ran outside and began yelling that we had not paid our tab. I calmly explained that we had paid and showed her the payment confirmation screenshot. I understand that mistakes and misunderstandings happen, but confronting guests outside and immediately assuming they are attempting to leave without paying is not an appropriate way to handle the situation. The payment system provided by the restaurant clearly allowed us to pay through the QR code. If employees are not properly trained on how that system works, the restaurant should either provide additional training or remove that payment option. The food and drinks were enjoyable, but the way we were treated at the end of the evening overshadowed the rest of the experience. Management should address this so other paying customers are not embarrassed or falsely accused.

While it was dingy and divey, it has since been renovated to accommodate more seating and even a good amount of parking. Bathrooms are no longer a climb to the attic, but are located on the first floor in the middle dining area. There is additional seating in the back and dimly lit booths / small tables out front. Not a particularly big fan of the chemical odor on some tables. No matter the time of the day, the staff is on it. They have always been patient, sweet, and efficient. It's always really tough when they're slammed, which can get chaotic. Every table starts off with an order of complimentary nachos, which comes with a salsa roja that has a serious picoso kick to it. Tamales for a late night snack has always been a good idea and their pork + beef hit the spot. The enchiladas were also tasty, which plenty of sauce and adequately stuffed with cheese, chicken, and beef. I also love the massive glasses of water, which might be 32 oz. Portions are solid and the price skews a bit higher in the $13 to $20 range. Also, when staff says the plate is hot, they really mean it. Gone are the pre-pandemic 24 hours and instead weekend hours are now until 4AM, and until 1AM on weekdays. Here's hoping they find an opportunity to be open at all hours iin the near future. The only con is that you can only have either the hot drinks or the cold drinks for the initial $7-$8 dollars, otherwise they charge you an extra $7-$8 dollars. How many drinks can you really drink in such short time? I like coffee to start but wasn't willing to pay $14-$16 for drinks before the buffet. Also, the flour tortillas need to be cooked a little longer and the corn tortillas are not hot enough because by the time you get to your table they will be cold. I would definitely recommend and I would come back more often if I had others that were willing to spend that kind of money for a buffet. There is a midtown "sculpture" of the city name in big letters covered in art for tourists to take pictures right next to the restaurant. The restaurant is also located right across the street from a CVS on one side and several yuppie pretentious restaurants on another side of the street. This location features a covered outdoor bar like one might find at an upscale resort or in the Bahamas on the Gray St. side. There is also a cashier and order and pick up windows on another side of the building like at similar fast food style Hispanic restaurants in TX. Their menu is a bit limited with mostly street and full sized tacos, but is pretty standard for Tex-Mex fare. We got the 5 street tacos and a standard margarita to go. You can customize the meats and toppings on the tacos. Sadly La Calle does not seem to have an option for grilled onions like similar places, but at least had raw onions that came on the side. From the variety of meats we got pollo, asada, and pastor. Each was seasoned very well and had good flavor. None of the meats was too spicy like at some similar places. The margarita was placed in a sealed cup and bag for to go transport as in accord with local laws. The styrofoam cup kept the margarita frozen even in the Houston heat for the 20 min walk back to the hotel. Not sure if they actually gave us the standard margarita we ordered or some other flavored one because the taste was off, but it was not a bad drink. However, standard margaritas taste better elsewhere. The tacos were probably about the going rate, but the margarita seemed expensive, but might be because you can order S, M, or L and we got a M, so perhaps costs more than a standard sized cup elsewhere. There were outdoor benches to eat at or the covered bar area, but we had to go. Overall, would come back here again and recommend you give them a try. There were a few sketchy characters-customers as this is still a downtown area, but to go solves this problem.

Would come back but maybe when it's less cold and I'm less sober. Cold weather and a frozen marg do not go well together.
