Came to this dentist for emergency gum sores/irritation twice. Both time nothing was done but still received a $1500 plus bill. I asked for antibiotics to kill the bacteria and again was asked to come in so he could once again look inside my mouth. I need antibiotics before the bacteria spread worse and I lose all my teeth but instead I receive an expensive ointment that burned the walls of my mouth. Once again I contact this dentist and instead of prescribing antibiotics that will fix the problem he informed me to come in once again to yes you guessed it look inside my mouth yet once again and charge me another $700. I need dire help and all I'm getting are bills from this dentist and no solutions/cure. Why does he care more about money opposed to his patients well being? read more

This review is long overdue and I apologize. I had to get an emergency tooth extraction and my general dentist recommended Armitage Oral Surgery. It was close to closing time on a Thursday evening. I was in pain and desperate to make an appt asap. I called Armitage Oral Surgery and the girl that took my call sensed my urgency. She was so kind and compassionate and answered all my 6 billion questions patiently. She said they would fit me in for the first appt the next morning. I was thrilled and surprised because I thought it would be at least a week wait. This was sign number one that I was in good hands. The next morning I went in and met with Dr. Katabi and his clinical assistant Daniela. Any hesitation or fear left in me instantly evaporated. They were both so kind and caring and thorough in the meeting. Dr. Katabi is absolutely an expert in his field and instantly gains your trust. He took the time to explain the process and next steps to me, never making me feel rushed or bothersome. And Daniela was so amazing. She was nice and calming and you could tell she really cared about her job, her office, and her patients! While the process of a tooth extraction is not fun, they made it as easy and seamless as possible. They even put on soothing jazz music! The process was quick and before I knew it, I was walking out with a bag full of goodies (gauze, syringe, ice pack) and care instructions. Armitage Oral Surgery took a dreadful situation and turned it into a positive experience. Dr Katabi and his assistants are amazing. His work is stellar. However, their office required me to pay upfront even thought I have insurance, that's several thousands for my procedure and it's not the first time I've gone to him. I'm ok with that, but what I'm not ok with is their timeliness in filing insurance claims so that I can get compensated, either through reimbursement through Armitage Oral Surgery or if any portion of the claims are denied I can file for reimbursement through my FSA account, all which have DEADLINES!!! They need to do better. I feel like there isn't any urgency to follow up/follow through on filing claims because they received their money upfront. Because of this experience, I will probably find another oral surgeon for any future work. read more

Was referred to go here by dentist a year ago after seeing concerning dark area in jaw on X-ray. They took CAT-scan of my head and Dr. Firas F. Katabi, DDS said dark spot was part of aging and would return to normal and that I had nothing to worry about. A year later go back to dentist and dark spot grew and now need to get treated when I could have taken care of it a year ago. Dr. Firas F. Alright, this is the last review in my saga of my terrible toothache from this last weekend. I requested an appointment from my normal dentist in Lakeview on a Saturday. They did a great job and saw me first thing Monday. They couldn't diagnose it exactly (though did ultimately get it right) and sent me on to a specialist for a more detailed scan. They, in turn, referred me to Armitage for the extraction and implant prep after confirming the diagnosis. So, here it was on a Tuesday morning that I found myself at Armitage waiting to talk about my tooth with Dr. Pullos. She looked at my scans and confirmed that I has a serious crack in an old, filled tooth and that it needed to be extracted. But it went further. We talked about options for implants or bridges and such. And she went over the options, including the relative costs of each (wow, was that refreshing!!). We also talked in detail about the options for either local or twilight anesthesia. She was absolutely professional and scientific while being friendly too. We had a great conversation about places to eat out in the Oak Park area (which, yeah, was a bit ironic too). Ultimately, despite her warning me of the typical expected discomfort, I have had very little. Her and her staff did an amazing job and I have had no problems so far. And I expect none. I really cannot say enough good things about Armitage, their professionalism, their skill, and their willingness to talk me through things and see me on quite short notice. So awesome!! read more

I had a wisdom tooth that had been growing in for years and suddenly grew rapidly and created a painful infection. I knew this needed to be dealt with immediately. I actually called one of the other well known oral surgery places in the city first, and they told me I needed a dentist referral. Ugh. I didn't have time to see a dentist, this was a legit infection issue. I called Armitage Oral Surgery and they were able to get me in the next day, less than 24 hours, and no referral needed! I thoroughly dislike dental work (as do most folks), but the entire process was seamless! Dr. Katabi was incredible and even though this was a routine extraction he probably does 100x a week, he was very attentive, listened, and gave me his full attention. I can't say enough good things about the Dental/Surgical assistant as well. She was friendly, comforting, and always made sure I was ok during the procedure (and reminded to breath deeply, which helps). I am a low responder to local anesthesia and typically need more than the average person and I let Dr. Katabi know this off the bat. He understood me right away, to the point that when he started working on the extraction I thought it was way too soon based on prior dental experiences... but this guy knows what he's doing. He knew exactly where to numb, and despite working with a very small space (upper wisdom tooth hidden behind molars) he got that guy out in seconds. Do your research, they will not help you at all. Rating 2 stars because I did feel that the staff was very friendly and Katabi seemed knowledgeable about wisdom teeth removal. If things were to go as planned, I'm sure the procedure would have gone smoothly. I was supposed to get my wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday 12/19. When I called to book my appointment, I was told I can do my consultation and procedure on the same day. I figured that would be perfect because wisdom teeth removal is a very common procedure that oral surgeons do multiple times a day. I have metlife insurance, when I called the office to book, I let them know my insurance and asked if I was in network. They said yes, so then I proceeded with booking the appointment. The day is now 12/19, the front desk ladies were super friendly and nice, and all seemed well. This is where things get wonky. Dr. Katabi, although educated, kept talking over me and insisting that I list more symptoms than I already had. I had a referral from my dentist to get all four of my wisdom teeth removed, as far as I'm concerned, let's just not overwhelm the patient with additional questions and get it over with? It seemed that the answers I was providing him were not good enough, and he wanted me to express that I had worse symptoms than I already had. But that's something I could get past, maybe the guy has a complex. The second wonky experience was when they told us to wait a "few minutes" and that the insurance specialist lady would be back to discuss the official treatment plan and the payment plan. You must pay before they begin the procedure, which is totally valid. However, when the lady showed us on her tablet that the total was approx. $4,000, but that we could pay $3,305 today, we were alarmed. When I called another place that is in network and covers 80% of the cost, the price estimated to $600 out of pocket costs, which is quite reasonable and expected. Additionally, with my insurance, two or more wisdom teeth being removed is considered surgery, so the 15 min increment times of IV sedation, should be free, with my insurance. So we ended up leaving, and we told them that we would call our insurance to figure out what's going on, and rebook if it made sense. When we called our insurance, it turns out they are not even in network! It was a complete joke. The insurance lady was insisting that we had a family plan of $1500, and that $800 of that had already been used. That was not the case, so immediately we sensed something was not right. The issue was never that they were out of network, oh well, we will find somewhere else. (I did find somewhere else by the way, Herbert Kanter in Arlington Heights is a way better option.) The issue was how many discrepancies there were and the lack of transparency, up until today. I received a text message asking if I was interesting in rescheduling my appointment, so I decided to call them back and let them know how I felt as a potential patient and my lackluster experience. When I was speaking to the front desk person today, and I described the situation and made a reference to the insurance specialist lady showing us the $3,305 price on her tablet, her sole response was " we don't have iPads." As someone who has worked in customer service, that's a very unprofessional response. Does the object that the price was presented really matter? Maybe it was just a piece of paper, at this point I can't remember. But my question is, does it matter? She then said that they always tell patients if they're out of network or in network. I found this interesting, because that was not my experience at all. I let her know that I'm not interested in coming to them, and that I would be writing a Yelp review. What I learned from this experience, when I booked with Hebert Kanter's office, they provided me with a breakdown in prices over the phone, and told me my IV sedation is free. They were very transparent and I appreciated that. I suggest going literally anywhere else than here. read more

A tooth of mine had become painful over the course of a week. My regular dentist checked it out to find the tooth was toast and the root canal from a few years ago had failed. They referred me to Armitage Oral Surgeons and luckily I was able to get an appointment the very next morning. Dr. Katabi and his assistant Val could both tell I was nervous and put me at ease right away by explaining everything so thoroughly. They answered all of my questions (even the weird one if I could see the tooth after the procedure lol). Dr. Katabi was great during the procedure and explained every step as he was doing it and made sure I kept breathing to stay relaxed. Overall, everything (check-in, numbing, and extracting) took under an hour to complete! Val was great at going over the aftercare of the procedure and making sure I knew exactly what to do once I got home. I would highly recommend Armitage Oral Surgery for these types of procedures. They make what is already an anxious/scary experience so much better and almost enjoyable (you know how ever much you can enjoy getting a tooth pulled lol). read more

Just got a letter (an actual physical letter mailed to me) in response to my review. This is my summary of the letter's content: "Sorry you had a negative experience. Thanks for your feedback. But you're wrong: We did the procedure perfectly. We can fix whatever you did to yourself. You can make an appointment for an evaluation. And we don't know what you're talking about in regards to scheduling/prescription/communication issues. Sorry you're upset." I called this practice this am about a cracked tooth that needed to come out. They offered me an appointment today and after filling out paperwork I was quickly getting an X-ray for the tooth. I saw Dr. Firas Katabi within a few minutes who did a thorough evaluation. He explained exactly what he saw in my mouth and what he thought I needed to do. In a short amount of time, with little to no pain my tooth was out! The dental technician Tammy was also wonderful, very competent and caring. They accepted my insurance, took Apple Pay for my portion and was on my way in less than an hour. I have had one other tooth extraction at a different practice which was a terrible experience so they did everything they could to reassure me that it would be completely different this time, which it was! I was truly stressed out about having a molar tooth removed, but the entire staff were so patient and calming that I became quite calm. Dr Katabi was exceptional in dealing with me. He calmly walked me through the entire process before the procedure and answered all my questions. His assistant Val also was exceptional. During the actual procedure Dr Katabi kept reassuring me that all was well and that I was doing fine. This really helped me to relax. UPDATE: Over a year later, I just got a surprise bill for double of what I already paid. I asked several times if this was covered by my insurance before my procedure and they informed me that the price was correct. I was told it is now too late to have anything else covered. If this was processed correctly the first time, I wouldn't be dealing with this and could have had my FSA or HSA cover it. Now it is an extra major expense out of my pocket. Again, the doctor was top notch, but this billing practice comes off as shady to say the very least. There is no excuse for a surprise bill of over over $1,200.00 a year after the procedure. I completely take back my recommendation. This is a nightmare for me. read more

Of course no one is thrilled to go to the dentist or especially an oral surgeon; but this one is different. The focus on anxiety was the very first thing mentioned, and the we spent the longest talking about it. I was so comfortable after my consultation that I (I faint with simple anesthesia shot...yep) that I went with the laughing gas and my anxiety meds instead of being put under. I've had nerve damage for 6 months thanks to my wisdom teeth removal here. It could be permanent - have to wait and see. The last few months have been a nightmare of getting MRIs, doing follow up appointments with specialists, having ongoing pins and needles in my tongue (if not pain / lisping / biting my tongue while eating / not being able to taste). I was assured from the team multiple times that they were "very good" at wisdom teeth removals and there's nothing to be concerned about. Posting to warn others to get nerve imaging done in case a nerve is too close to the wisdom tooth you're getting removed (although this should really be the provider's responsibility and not the patient). read more

This past MLK day Jan 20 2020 I had to have an emergency cracked tooth extraction by Dr. Smyth I also had an infection from the tooth draining into my jawbone. First, Dr Katabi was great. Very professional and got things done pretty quickly. However, I have little faith in the office as a whole. To prepare for my last surgery I was told I needed a CT and that my insurance wouldn't cover it since I've already had one done recently for my braces. They were informed that my orthodontist has my most recent CT. The doctor advised admin to request the CT be sent from my ortho before my scheduled surgery. Two weeks later, in an act of rare foresight on my end, I called my ortho and asked if my oral surgeon had requested my CT. I was informed that they had not. My surgery was the next day, and my orthos office was going to be closed so the oral surgeon office had just that afternoon to get the CT or it wouldn't be available pre-surgery. I called the OS and explained to them that this needed to get done ASAP for my upcoming surgery. I know that the doctor asked the admin to do this, and I'm very confused as to why they did not do this, knowing that the CT was required before surgery could take place. When I arrived for my surgery I was given novocaine and waited for 20 minutes. When the doctor showed up and asked for the CT, his assistant said it was uploaded. Apparently it was someone else's CT, and the assistant INSISTED it was mine. The doctor was adamant that it wasn't based on the fact that it could not have matched my situation. Please see attached picture for a text I sent my partner while this was going on. Once they actually found my CT the surgery went well and was over quickly. I came back for a follow up a week later, and waited for almost an hour after my appointment time before the front desk told me that the doctor was running behind and either wasn't going to be able to see me or I'd need to wait maybe another half hour or so. I took off of work for this appointment during my busy season, so I explained I would not come back if I left right then. Magically the doctor was available--I'm sure he really was busy/behind, but still. The office offered my a Starbucks gift card that they already had in a "I'm sorry you had to wait so long" pre-printed card. I've seen them hand these out before. Time management seems to be an issue. And now I've had a billing issue, which is obviously fueling my rage, so please take my review with a grain of salt. I am having trouble trusting this office and their administration, even though the oral surgeon himself is great and very trustworthy in my opinion. If you use this office, make sure you know if there are any unlisted and unaccounted for charges you may owe months later because of "slow insurance". read more

I wouldn't have expected to leave a positive review about having wisdom teeth removed but here we are. I had to get my bottom two wisdom teeth removed after having my non-impacted top two removed a few years ago. These two were significantly impacted and were something I had put off time and time again because I was afraid of having the surgery done. My dentist referred me to Armitage Oral so I called them about 3 or 4 weeks after the fact when I convinced myself to finally go through with it. They were able to get me in for a consultation in 2 weeks and the surgery was scheduled 2 weeks from that date which was surprisingly quick! Dr. Smythe was friendly and courteous which helped calm my nerves. She explained everything in detail and left plenty of room to ask questions. The surgery itself took no time at all and fortunately, I've had no issues since. With 80/20 insurance and after 3 appointments (consultation with an x-ray, surgery, post-op), I ended up paying a grand total of around $280 so not too bad! Would definitely recommend coming here to get your wisdom teeth out. read more

The doctors are great but don't know what to say about the admins. Really think they should hire more competent people who are rock stars like their oral surgeons I was calling to book a wisdom teeth consult today and the person who picked up the phone was rude. She first left me waiting on the phone for five minutes then talking to me in a poor manner as if she was having a really horrible day. When I asked about the next available for the appointment other than the first option she gave me, and she became very inpatient and almost felt like " take it or leave it, if you don't want that time. At the end of the call, after I thanked her for setting me up, I asked for her name again then you won't even believe this, she hung up on me. Apparently she knows she did a poor job and probably was worried I report her in some way. It's okay every one has bad days and admin is not an easy job. I had some impacted wisdom teeth and a few other extractions and screws put in about a month and a half ago. Everything went very well. The doctor and staff were amazing and walked me through the whole process, making sure I was very comfortable. Didn't feel a thing. I had given birth not too long ago so my immune system may have still been weak because a week later I developed an infection on one side despite being on antibiotics. I called the office and they had me come in immediately. The doctor and staff were all so kind and caring about the situation and took care of the infection asap.
