This Armstrong Grden Cnter is in located at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad so all the seeds (or bulbs? Or cuttings?) you need to recreate the flower field in your own home is available. I've not seen a great selection of ground cover available to a garden layperson like me as this one. Really, they have great selection for home gardens, whether or not you have realistic/regular garden elections or a wish list. Large large free parking lot. Let's just say my family and I drove down from Riverside to see what they have because our location was running low on vegetable plants. The place is huge!!! But we were very disappointed the vegetable plants looked terrible. There was a lot of vegetable plants but they just didn't look healthy or at least what we are normally used too. read more

Big disappointment for my tomato purchases this year. I purchased a yellow cherry, a beef steak and a chocolate cherry. The chocolate cherry is fabulous. The other two ended up being a weedy red cherry. A very inferior plant and the fruit was not worthy of watering. read more

This place is great, stopped by here to get a friend a houeswarming gift. I never knew there were so many different kinds of plants; indoors, outdoors, succulents, perennials, etc it boggles the mind. In each section there were individual plants you could buy and repot, and there were some premade arrangements that were already in a nice pot that you could purchase and gift right away. They also have a large selection of different pots and pans to place your plant and I'm sure everything you could possibly need and stuff that's super specialized as well. I dawdled for a tiny bit but made my selection of a beautiful/healthy mini pony tail plant, and a pot to go with, the cash register was a little chaotic because there were two registers and as I was standing in one line, people stepped up and lined up behind each register until I told them there's a line and it's behind me. Took a star off because parking is absolute madness here, we couldn't find parking so I ran in while my husband drove around in the parking lot. It's likely due to them sharing the parking lot with the Field of Flowers which was in bloom at the time we went. If you happen to go during that time, brace yourself and good luck. read more

I don't usually go to garden centers but it is located next to a place I wanted to see that was closed so I stopped in to browse. What a cool place. Super well merchandised. I was able to walk around and really enjoy the experience without feeling like I was in a packed grocery or office supply business. Lots of neat garden items, tools, plants, etc. Also some odd items (Apple butter for example) that you wouldn't expect to see at a "garden center." I think this was the first Armstrong location I've been to but just browsing around made me want to check out one closer to where I live. The business I came to visit - The Flower Fields in Carlsbad - is closed except from March to May. It is physically connected to the Armstrong Garden Center so I imagine that once you see all the awesome rows of flowers you can walk into Armstrong and get everything you needs (seeds, etc) to make your own flower fields at home. read more

I'm leaving this review after speaking with the manager, Colin, at this (Carlsbad) location. I raise monarchs and have found this location to be my go to for the milkweed plants to feed the caterpillars (cats). Anyone who raises these cats knows that milkweed is all they eat, at a growing and constant rate until they become a chrysalis. Because of the shortage and annual nature of these plants, it's easy for a person of Colin's character to take advantage of, and price gauge, us consumers who will pay for this plant, when we can find it, so our cats won't starve to death. Armstrong's premium price of $6.49 per 4" starter plant of milkweed is high but was worth it, at the start of this season, when you'd get a 3-4 stem plant. But now the plant is only a clipping in a 4" pot with 10 leaves if your lucky (which a cat will eat in a matter of hours). The price remains the same. Now, since the plants at Armstrong's are not covered, they are not protected from the monarchs that lay their eggs on nothing but this plant. And that's just what they've done. So now these plants are not only a clipping but these clippings are half eaten by the cats that have inevitably emerged from their egg. The premium price has not changed. Yesterday I purchased several plants, which I've done weekly through the season and asked the cashier if I could get a discount for the half eaten plants, she had to ask the manager, Colin. He told me "no, because they're eating my inventory." Now, isn't that the point of asking for a discount in the first place? Why pay full price for a sub par product? It's not the consumers fault that Colin doesn't take the appropriate measures to protect his inventory, it's Colin's. It's common practice among retail establishments in the USA to markdown prices when their product becomes sub par. If someone stole the cord of the printer, markdown. If the produce is getting too ripe, markdown. If anything anywhere is reaching it's shelf life, markdown. Because it's better to sell it at cost and break even than lose, and most importantly, it's fair. But because Colin knows this plant is in demand he will and does GAUGE us consumers. I thought Armstrong's was above that practice, but apparently not. So for monarch moms like me, propagate your own milkweed to save yourself from the Colin's of the world and the businesses that employ them. Employees completely ignored me the whole time I was there. They definitely all seemed like they had no interest being there including the assistant manager. I tried to ask a question and while I got a half hearted response it was obvious I wasn't going to get the help I needed so I left. Last week I went to Armstrong Garden Center in Carlsbad and bought 4 plants and a small bag of potting soil and when I went to the cashier, I was surprised at the amount. The cashier responded, "Inflation." The following week I went to Lowes and bought 3 plants, 6 bags of mulch, 2 large bags of potting soil, a 32 oz plastic container of fertilizer and 2 boxes of tree fertilizing stakes for the exact amount that I had paid at Armstrong! I really enjoy coming to the Flower Fields and always visit Armstrong on my way out. This location is super cute because they also have gift shop items of the Flower Fields (shirts, hats, magnets, etc!) Also, for how busy it is the workers are still SO kind! I couldn't imagine dealing with that many hot tourists and keeping a smile on my face the whole time. We made two recent visits to this nursery after visiting the Flower Fields. Wonderful service from Diana's packaging our ranunculus bouquets for transport an hour away, to Brian's assisting moving a bougainvillea plant to the cashier for us, to Isabel's signing me up for a club card, letting me know about the senior discount, and carrying the bougainvillea to our car and and expertly loading it! Very disappointed with this place. I bought some of there "premium" potting soil and it was poor quality and infested with fungus gnats. I still can't get rid of them. DO NOT buy bagged potting soil here. Do yourself a favor and go to someplace that sells FoxFarm or Pro-mix. My wife also bought a evergreen bonsai tree that was apparently dead from the start. I watered it regularly and added some time-release fertilIzer and it did nothing but dry up and fall apart. read more

I live in Colorado and ordered the gift of a fruit tree for friends in California. There was a misunderstanding about the delivery charge and I appreciated that Janae accommodated me by reducing the delivery charge. The tree has not been delivered yet, so I cannot say whether or not my friends are pleased. What I do know is that Janae was very patient and helpful. (I do have one suggestion for improvement for the business: Update your website so credit card numbers can be entered safely electronically when placing an order so they don't have to be given over the phone.) I love Armstrong's, I really do. Sometimes, I find this location is hit or miss when it comes to buying garden plants that have already started, but the seed selection is amazing, and I know if I want to start my edamame from scratch, I can come here to find the seeds. Some pricing seems like a deal, others (like the decor/pottery) seems a bit on the pricey side, but I've never been disappointed by going here. When you park here, just make sure you don't hit any of the numerous hordes going to the flower fields. Luckily, Armstrong has it's own parking, you just need to watch out for the kids running through the parking lot. read more

I love coming to the flower fields every year. Especially now that we have a little one who has shown interest in gardening at a very young age of 16 months. This year, we weren't able to come during the peak time due to tons of traveling -- but we came here at the tail end of May to attend a Butterfly Release Event with a hospice service we used for my Mother-in-law. Despite the flowers fields being empty, we still enjoyed the grounds and the above ground flower beds that existed at the entry. They're still very pretty for one to admire. One great thing about coming when it's not super crowded is my daughter had the playground to herself. I'm sure she would've preferred to be surrounded by others but for this Mama, it was much easier to keep a watchful eye on her and I got great pictures of her playing with the geraniums in the flower beds in full bloom. I never thought to come here outside of peak times but I might have to think otherwise. We toured around the garden center after the butter release event and to commemorate it, I ended up buying a piece of the garden art. A colorful ceramic butterfly. I know it was waaaayyyyy overpriced ($60 for an 11" ceramic butterfly) but I thought it would be a nice reminder of the day and the year anniversary of my mother-in-laws passing. read more

This Armsrong Garden Center doesnt even deserves 1 star for Rudeness to customer. UNBELIEVABLE!!! I came today to visit the Flower Fields which located walking distance to them. After I was exiting the man at the Flower Fields gave the small bouque of Ranuculus flower, I assumed for Easter. As I entered Armstorng Garden Center, I saw a young man at cashier and and an causasian older lady (short bob blonde hair with glasses) talking. So I notified them, that I had this flower from the Flower Field, not from Armstrong; to prevent misunderstanding later. The lady said this to me with a nasty look on her face: "And how do I know this? Did you just come in?" Yes..and she saw me!!..while talking to the man cashier. So what is this all about? Because I am asian? There was similar flowers being sold in front of cashier..but I came from the entrance. I am sorry to disapoint this nice lady that minority like to steal..but I can pay for bouque of flower. Thank you so much Armstrong Garden Center. I like going to Armstrong, they have some really nice stuff there...But, a lot of it is overpriced. We stopped by for their "garden party." From 4-8pm on Friday that they had with wine/cheese, 20% off of everything, and goody bags for the first 50 customers. SOMEONE should have rallied the troops to organize this thing because the rude cashiers at the front had NO idea what was going on. Any other employee that you tried to ask had an attitude about it, as if the "party" was a burden to them...then don't have it! No one knew what to do about the bags..one cashier made up a rule that you needed a raffle ticket that you would get after you purchased something to get the bag...another one didn't know what to do...another staff member just grabbed some and handed some out..we ended up just taking ours and continued shopping..we were there 15 min early and no one knew what was going on, so we took it upon ourselves to help everyone out! Some of the younger staff members are clearly more happy with their job than others, and for that we thank you! They are very helpful and don't mind taking the time to service their customers and teach them about the plants. read more

My daughter and I visited this nursery in December to pick of a peace lily for my sister while she was convalescing. We aren't from the area, so it is difficult to say what their prices are like comparatively, but I paid a little over $5 for the plant, which was $15, a large terra cotta pot, and a few decorative ornaments to brighten up the pot while the plant itself grew roots. I explained to the woman at the counter about us being from out of state and asked her if she could charge us some money to repot the plant into the pot I bought. It was $5. It looked like they had flower fields that folks could go into, but we did not this time, although I did make a mental note to come back specifically for that the next time we came into the area. read more

Heaven... I'm in heaven... If you're a garden bug like me or have any kind of remote interest in flowers and green growing things this is definitely a place to stop in to! You drive up off the highway and you're in a field of flowers. Gorgeous! When you enter the massive garden center you know you've found it. "It" being everything! Everything you could possibly imagine, want, or need for a garden - and some things you didn't even know existed. The largest seed selection I've ever seen and lots of other knick knacks - statuary and chimes. All the other accouterments as well. At the time I was planning my spring garden and so spend most of my quick visit in the seed section checking out both the traditional and the exotic offerings. However, the outdoor plant section was pretty amazing too. Wish I had more time to wander this mecca of gardening... read more

Prices are a little high but so is the quality of product. I'm super happy with the majority of the products I've purchased here.. If prices concern you, sign up for an account or their newsletter and pay attention to their sales. They have sales every week. They also have free classes on gardening which is awesome. But really the most important review I could give of Armstrongs is their staff: they are SO knowledgable and helpful. Seriously I could hang around here for hours and just absorb information from their staff. They are usually very keen to help you and will walk you through recommendations and suggestions. It always blows my mind what they know off the top of their heads. A good tip, avoid this location during the flower gardens season.. I think this is early to late spring. It gets super busy and this location is the exit aka gift shop of the flower gardens so everyone who goes in must come out which makes it hectic and busy. This location is pretty big too btw! read more

I wish that there was an Armstrong closer to where I live. I really like the style and atmosphere of the stores. The people working there are always very friendly and knowledgeable. They seem to like to chat about plants and gardening. It has that "everyone knows your name" feel. I go to this store a couple times a year and I swear that I've seen some of the exact same plants there time and again. It's great that they are loyal to the plants that don't sell but at some point all they are going to have in inventory is the unwanted strays. read more

I walked into Armstrong and and immediately was able to find someone to help me look for specific plants that I needed! The employee was very excited about my project and expressed enthusiasm and provided answers to all of my questions! If there was something she did not know she went to go ask a coworker and would return immediately with an answer for me :-) the cashier was very helpful, he even walked me to the back of the store to give me different choices for the soil that I needed! As a person who is new to planting in general, all of the employees were able to guide me in the right direction and provide me with all of the help I needed. We were looking for "Trumpeter Roses, decided to call first to see if they had any and we were delighted they did. We went right over and I was blown away by the customer service! We were taken care of by a very helpful gentlemen "Kent". He walked us over to where the Roses were, loaded them on a cart, and loaded them in our car! Seriously, he couldn't have been any more helpful! We bought all they had! My wife went to their Encinitas location and bought 3 more and was treated just as well as we were treated in Carlsbad!
