The shop itself has an authentic Old West vibe, complete with hitching rail, old vintage saddles, and a classic wooden porch layered in ranch dust. When you first see it, you think "wow, they really went to a lot of trouble decorating this place!" and then realize, "Oh, this place must have been here forever - this is real!" - and it is! it's the real deal. Inside, you'll find the best selection of Western saddles I've seen anywhere, with options for all kinds of riding styles. The store has a tremendous selection of tack - including everything from bits, bridles, headstalls, halters, leads and ropes to grooming supplies, horse care products, saddle pads, and hoof picks. I really like Gary - he's very experienced and knowledgeable and has been in business for decades. He's always happy to answer questions and share his advice and expertise. First let me remind you, don't judge a book by its cover. We drove up to the address and thought we were in the wrong place till I saw the sign. Yup we're in the right place. Wow!! Very unexpected. I felt like I was on Wild West movie set. Never expected this, but when I walked into Arney's shop, BAM!!! I was hit with an array of different riding gear. I was looking for a saddle for my wife. Her first ever saddle and for that matter it was a Circle Y saddle. Arney asked all the right questions and once he thought it over he then pointed us over to the saddles and Bam!!! We had a saddle. He also recommended a saddle pad that would diffuse the heat from the horse and Bam!!! We had that too. Granted to some this is a sport, but to us this is a hobbie so Arney's store satisfied our equestrian neeeds. He and his staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. I've shopped here many times before and I absolutely love the place. They had what I need, and got helped from a kind gentleman. When people speak of tack shops this is one the to fo place, people have referred it to me and I referred it to others. During this hard times of the COVID-19 virus going on there is a new ordinance of non essential stores not to be open. Though there is some that are still are open. I called to confirm with the store to see if they were temporarily closed or open. Online and on their website says it opened so I wanted to confirm. When calling I was expecting it to go to answering machine. A woman picked up a phone and when I asked if they were open her response was rude and response uncalled for. I have a slight tack shop addiction. I just love the smell. Friendly---Gary and I get on great and he's so helpful and knowledgeable about his inventory. The prices are good with some markdowns and the selection, decent. I also love that though they are a small outfit, they're open Sundays. Love this place. When ever I need tack I head over to Arney's. Much better to purchase in person than on line that way you see exactly what you are getting no guess. They are very knowledable and if I can't find what i'm looking for chances are they still have it, just tell them and they dissappear and reappear with the item. I travel quite a bit for my work and have stopped at tack stores all over Northern California, Oregon, Utah and some of Wahsington and have yet to find a place with the selection of Arney's. As for rude workers as mentioned in other reviews.......they may seem a bit short or gruff but if you don't take offense quickly and talk with them they really are not what you initally thought. Great selection, kind of claustrophobic though. They have a great variety of western and english tack. They carry some great inexpensive but classic english tack- I've purchased now about 4 pairs of their Tory wide plain leather reins- everyone in my barn loves them and is buying them too, and they are only $30! I bought a pair of french calf leathers there and they were wearing out faster than I thought they should. I was past their returm window but they took them back anyway. They have a huge selection of saddles and pads too. Oh, be warned, they charge you more for credit cards, so bring cash or a check. This place is packed chuck full of anything and everything you may need for your riding experience. I have read some of the other reviews of this place, some not too favorable, but we had a lady help us and her name is Shelia. She was funny, helpful, and made the whole shopping trip worth while. I found out she only works a couple days a week,(we were there Sunday). I look forward to going back when we need to get some other stuff... The old man was super helpful and helped me find an extra wide gullet for my draft horse. He gave me a good deal on the saddle, and also gave me a discount on a horn bag that I wanted because the velcro was coming off on one of the closures. Honestly, I could have saved some money by going online, but I like that I could buy a used saddle and I can return it if it doesn't fit my horse. I love Arney's! It's like a kid going to the candy store. They have something for everyone. I like that they have a section of gently used items from saddles to lead ropes and anything in between. This was useful when we first bought our horse 4 years ago and had to start from scratch. Needing just the bare necessities is expensive and Arney's made it more affordable. Went to Arney's to buy a horse blanket and I bought my horses measurements. Arney said my measurements were wrong. I asked him the right way to take Beau's measurements. He gave me an answer that sounded like a geometry equation. I really wanted to get it right, so I asked him to write his directions down. Arney got mad and said he didn't care about getting my business. I left feeling more hurt than getting tossed off a horse, well almost. Arney won't get my business anymore. read more

This is a bitter sweet place. Its really the only tack shop anywhere around the east bay area that actually has a decent selection of tack. They Are also saddle repair savvy and have helped me out a lot in that department. I have a lot of respect for this place, its family owned and has been in business for over 25 years but beware because they are pricey. And your service will depend on who waits on you. The old man is the one to watch for because he will not give you a deal on anything, not even used and he has also been witnessed raising his hands towards woman's rear ends when they are not looking. A tad disrespectful in my opinion. The younger girl is very knowledgeable and her dog milk dud does a variety of entertaining tricks and the middle aged guy with the beard is the only one who will give you a deal if you have cash only. And on days when he is drunk, is your best day to shop. They have an extensive selection of english and western tack as well as a used room with everything under the sun. They carry a lot of circle Y, Alamo , Courbette and Stubben. They also carry a decent selection of horse supplies such as fly spray, wound management, vet wrap, and a few supplements and leather care. So if you need something right away in person, your probably going to have to go to Arney's. If you can order it online, you might want to if you are into saving money. But overall, everyone should visit Arney's at least once. its quite an experience. read more

Wow!! I have never been treated so poorly, and in less than 5 minutes, ever!!! Holy cow!!! Finding real, live saddles/tack stores nowadays is hard. Most come off the internet, so I have been calling around looking for a saddle in hopes I could find it in real life, buy it and start riding! After calling several places but to no avail, but finding very helpful, wonderful people along the way, I came across this place. Not sure if cussing is allowed here so I won't, but the guy on the phone was the rudest, biggest "jerk" ever!! Before I could even finish my sentence about what I was looking for, I barely got the brand name out, he LITERALLY cuts me off with, "We don't have that! Is that all?" I was a little put off by his curtness, trying to see about possibly having him help me to order one or something, anything, helpful. So I continued with "ok thanks, can you maybe....", I'm still trying to figure out what was going on and how I could possibly find out if they could even order it for me, and possibly, maybe, he was just being silly, but he just got mad and snapped at me again! "Why are you asking me?!! How should I know!?" And all hell broke loose when I asked, "Ok, thanks anyway, do you happen to know any place else that might?" Usually I don't even have to ask, every other store I've been to has said, "Maybe you could try "ABC" place, they usually have that brand.", but he shoots back, yelling, "Why would I know that!? Why do I care about what another place has!? I know my inventory who cares about some one else's?" I apologized for asking and once again he cuts me off before I can finish my sentence, "I don't care about other places, so why should I know." I replied, because it's polite and he hung up on me. Customer service is all about the customer and this place had none!!! I will not shop nor will I recommend this place, ever. And all without even setting foot in the store. Pretty sad. Arney's is eclectic and full of stuff. My kind of place! I have had silver put on two different western show saddles, and Gary has done a terrific job both times. I love this place. They are always very helpful, curtious, congenial and full of great advice. I have bought 2 saddles, several bridles, helmets, bits.....and always get a great deal (yes, cash is king there to help you get the best deal). I love to just wander because you never know what you will find. My best purchases there, dressage pads, the selection is amazing. Lots, and lots of horse stuff!! After searching for days online for a western saddle, I finally hoofed (pun intended) over to Arney's (an hour drive for me) and was not disappointed! I was stunned about how much stuff they carry, walls of bridles, saddles stacked 3 high it was simply amazing. They also have a ton of english saddles for those English riders. I was greeted pleasantly and (I wish I had gotten her name), "She" was very helpful in helping find a saddle. She brought at least 6 out and even went into the warehouse and pulled one. Needless to say, I found everything I needed and then some. I will be going back for all my horse needs in the future. Like another reviewer said, they do charge extra for credit card use (4%) but they do take checks. Although not needed, I was able to take saddle home for a trial fit and return it if it didn't fit for a full refund. read more

After reading other reviews here on YELP it doesn't surprise me now how my family was treated while shopping in this dilapidated complex of trip hazards of a store. This was by far the worst shopping experience we have ever endured while shopping. We had planned on purchasing a saddle for our daughter with a budget of $1300. My wife had called at 2:40 to make sure they would be there until 5:00 and again as we were getting off the freeway at 4:45. Although we entered this fine establishment at 4:55 pm just before closing we were greeted by a woman stating they closed at 5:00 and she had somewhere to go. We explained to her that we had driven all the way from Gilroy during rush hour to purchase a saddle for our daughter and it didn't even phase her. So we quickly looked around in a panic to find something that would work and around 5:15 we had made a decision between 2 different saddles and was ready to purchase when all of sudden the old dude started popping off about how they're closed and he wasn't going to work for free and now the cost of the saddle was going to increase by 15% because now we're on his time and continued his rant rambling on. Well at this point we were within seconds of purchasing and I decided that someone who is this rude to my wife and child doesn't deserve my business. At 5:40 the old guy calls my wife back on her cell and explains that the saddIe is still for sale and asked her why we didn't come at noon! I understand that its a family business and its been around a long time but you don't just get to treat people this poorly and get away with it, you sir have lost my business and a very easy sale because we were ready to close the deal when you let your mouth start running. (One saddle was a consignment so he could have potentially sold an existing clients saddle as well) Customer service is definitely not a priority for this business. Another client was there as well and being belittled as well, I could go on but I digress. read more

When I walked in with a saddle fitting form, the first thing the owner said was "oh great, here comes the cardboard!" in a very snotty tone of voice (this was my first clue this was not going to go well), then after literally grabbing it out of my hand, proceeded to complain about how stupid their typical customer was regarding their knowledge of horses, then complained at length how he couldn't sell Crates or McCall saddles (two of the best sellers in the US?) then commented that you should only buy a horse to fit the saddle not a saddle to fit the horse ( seriously?), and when he showed me a saddle that clearly was to wide for my horse said 'oh just throw on a couple of pads and it will fit fine'! (the worst advise ever ) Unless you yourself know how to fit saddles or have access to someone who does, I would not under any circumstances rely on the advice from this shop to competently fit a saddle...this guy has the 'used car salesman' level of care-he just wants to sell a saddle, whether it fits or not is not his concern. I suggest he stop complaining about his customers behind their backs or start a new career, he has a bad case of customer service burnout. Oh I wish I had tried this place before! We had several people tell us to shop here yet never made the drive, but it sure was worth it! After buying the fourth saddle that still didn't fit my horse, we made an appointment for a saddle fitting at Arney's. My husband and I trailered our horses down and stayed for 3 hours. I was afraid it would be nothing but a big sales pitch for an overpriced saddle, but their first pick was a very modestly priced model and there was never a bit of pressure to buy anything at all. That first saddle fit perfectly (an experienced eye) and ended up being the one I bought, but we tried on multiple others just to be sure (turns out the gaited saddles fit the bill -who would have thought on my draft cross!). We didn't expect to do anything about my husband's well used aussie saddle, and they might have even talked us into a new one, but instead they removed several leather pieces, took them back into the shop and repaired them right on the spot! While repairs were in progress, I tried on 10 or so halters from their stash of at least 200 to find the perfect one ($19). If you want selection, this is the place. To cap off our day they even took some of our used tack in trade. Service, selection, and price can't be beat. I am a new fan! read more
