Oddly they have the best coffee in Durham, but it's more like a Starbucks. I think it's their Almond Milk. Everyone is nice, but it is hit or miss with their baristas. Some are very experienced and others have no idea what they are doing. I definitely would say it's good enough. But I do prefer their latte compared to the other coffee houses in town. First time there and I decided to post this because it's not likely I'll ever go back. I ordered a large black iced tea at which point she asked me if I wanted lemon flavor and I said sure. Little did I know it was going to be a pump of sugar laden horribleness and I ended up throwing half away. I guess I'm just old school with no sugar and a wedge of lemon to suffice. Top all this off with Aroma Joe radio. Yes, their own station. Full of ridiculous, loud pop oriented music which is so loud if you were there with anyone you wouldn't be able to have a conversation. I don't know. Maybe this place and many like them are so youth oriented as to negate the value of an older crowd. Sounds like bad business to me. I think in the future I'll opt for the more local spot for a little peace. read more

Most of the time I have had good experiences, but Sunday mornings have been horrible. The girls working are constantly getting things incorrect and when I asked about getting what I actually ordered they are rude. Specific example, I ordered a hot chai with almond milk and was given a iced chai with oat milk. When I asked if they could possibly remake the drink, the girl told me with an exasperated sigh, "fine I guess I can remake it, the ticket said iced with oat milk though." I never get iced tea and I only drink almond milk and my bf heard me order so I know I ordered my usual. I have had drinks made wrong before but never been met with rudeness. This is really disappointing because I've always had great experiences, but specifically the staff on Sundays is just not welcoming or accommodating.... We frequent here way too often! Friendly staff and love their iced chai! They have alternative milk options as well- oat and almond. It's a drive- thru with a small order inside area. Outdoor seating but not lots inside at this location which is fine because we usually get it to go and head to the beach. read more

At first, I lamented the loss of Ballard's, my favorite campus bar, and scorned the arrival of a wannabe chain that makes its money sloshing flavor shots into styrofoam cups of Red Bull, but after so many poor experiences with other coffee shops on campus and the corporatization of the university-run cafes, Aroma Joe's has made getting coffee in Durham worthwhile again. You won't find any locally roasted, fair trade or organic blends here, but you will find a strongly brewed, richly flavored, and un-burnt cuppa cawfee. Don't bother staying inside, though, unless you like your country/adult contemporary Pandora station turned up to 11 and your A/C system turned down to sub-arctic. The outdoor seating is great. Now, for the important part: espresso. As you are reading this, I am drinking a double espresso, poured over ice, which I purchased for the inexplicably low price of one dollar and twenty-five cents. While it's a long shot from Paris or New York, this is the place to be for espresso in the cultural mecca that is Durham, New Hampshire. Did I mention it's stronger than Hulk Hogan's biceps? My heart is palpitating with glee. Speaking of inexplicably priced, their bakery items are only 50 cents after 5pm. Aroma Joe's, I'm sorry I judged you before I got to know you. A 16 oz cup cost a little over $2 and I honestly think that if I just gave the two ones to a child with some crayons it would have generated more pleasure. If you want the quick version, this is the key point: I got a cup of coffee and it burnt my tongue so severely that nothing tasted quite right for 4 days! I'm not exaggerating, even after 2 minutes of letting it cool on my table (so that it wouldn't burn my hand through the crappy styrofoam cup) the first sip was so hot that the next day I placed salt directly on my tongue and I couldn't taste it for 5 seconds despite feeling the grains sitting there. If that weren't bad enough, the staff seemingly has no intention of telling you when your drink is ready unless you got some weird, overpriced, flavor-shot thing. While sitting there I saw several people have their drinks wait for a while while the staff didn't bother to even say "iced coffee" or "horrifying green thing with ice" to get the attention of the person who placed the order. The only people who got acknowledgement were the ones that got special blended things. While I obviously couldn't tell much about the flavor of my cup of brown lava (with it having burned my tongue and all) it didn't seem much better than instant but with grit at the bottom to convince me that it was fresh ground. For the same price as a single cup of their instant coffee with grit you can get a whole jar of instant and make a dozen cups and actually stir it. The interior of the restaurant is small and the queue ran into either other customers or the Subway that shares the building. The seating is uncomfortable and you can see deep gauges in the wall from god knows what. Overall: uncomfortable seating, sub-par staff, heat-conducting cups, coffee so hot that your tongue hurts for several days. read more

Usually a really good coffee place no problems with the other locations but the one in Durham is very inconsistent with their hours online it says they are open till 9 but when I arrive at 830 the whole place is shut down with no one in sight and when they are open you are usually greeted by a snobby college student who is trying to make it more than obvious that they don't care about their job and could be doing something better so overall this location has lost a pretty good customer read more

Coffee is unfortunately very inconsistent. Often tastes burnt which is too bad. This is not isolated to just this location but a commonality at all Aroma Joes. The one in Newmarket is usually fresh. Staff is always friendly, there's just too much coffee competition to not put out consistently good coffee. read more

Not recommended. First of all, off duty employees standing in front of the cases make it virtually impossible to order. Second, employees discussing the mild in the refrigerator where the stuff to make my drink came from is rather unsettling. Go someplace else, you'll be happier. read more
