Quick stop! Was looking for some pastry and this cafe caught my eye with the beauty they serve, Bienenstich. The Cafe itself had a cool gotchic-rustic feel to it. They roast their coffee in house I believe which is a dime a dozen these days. Overall, the pastry was OK. It was also a rather small piece and I think it was $6? A little expensive for what you get considering it's an awfully simple dessert. Solid, down-home, non-Starbucks indie local cafe. Prices are actually not bad at all for the quality of the drinks and food, but above all it's a cozy and pleasant place (outdoor seating when weather cooperates) to hang out at your own leisure and people-watch the locals as well as random tourists. Service was not lightning fast by any stretch, but nothing to really complain about either. I like that you have the option of getting your drink in a mug (ceramic or glass) not exclusively in a paper cup. This is the best coffee and pastry shop in Portsmouth. Everything here is amazing. Coffee, espresso drinks, baked goods and don't forget the German iced coffee. But it's more than that....because this is just a great and convenient place to get your coffee and a snack. Tasty bakery cafe with a good amount of indoor seating and a nice clean restroom. Service was quick. I ordered an iced decaf mocha latte with no ice and extra chocolate and whip. My beans--which I bought and asked if they could grind for a pour over--were super coarse ground. It probably doesn't matter though because the coffee is so dreadful. But for almost $12 each, you could get more than double that much food elsewhere. The apple strudel was a refreshing finisher. The place itself is quite welcoming and quiet, with most people there studying or reading. I do wish there was actually something German to this place, besides the flag and the strudel. Since our hotel wasn't serving anything interesting due to covid we decided to walk downtown and give it a try. This is an adorable little shop with some seating and a variety of delicious looking pastries, sandwiches, coffee tea, and more. They had so many things to choose from that I just decided to try the first latte I saw. I don't remember the name but it was a honey and vanilla latte with almond milk. Hubs had tea. We both had a breakfast sandwich. Mine was just bacon and egg on a biscuit. My husband had his on a bagel with egg, sausage, and cheese. The sandwiches were really good and the beverages were so good. We also shared a piece of a pastry with raspberry in it. Eas delicious! My medium latte was huge and they made it look so pretty! This is one of my favorite coffee shops in Portsmouth! The girls behind the counter are all very friendly and helpful. The ambiance is inviting and well lit. They have really delicious sandwiches, pastries, and tons of tea and coffee flavors. My all time favorite is the Raspberry White Mocha. There's also complimentary WiFi which is a must have for me to do my work! Did I mention this place is also dog friendly? Easy 5 star. I've been coming here for years and there are reasons. First off, the service is great. You're always met with a friendly smile and they're more than willing to educate you on the menu should you wish but will never demean you. Second, it's reasonably priced. That's something you can't say about many coffee shops in Portsmouth (anymore). Lastly, their flavors. They're actually brewed into the bean as opposed to being sugary syrups. Cute rustic German coffee shop. I like the variety of coffee they offer here. I would definitely want to come back to try everything else on the menu. I got their specialty drink, the German iced coffee which has a scoop of gelato and whip cream. It wasn't too sweet but also wasn't too strong. I probably wouldn't get it again just because I was looking for a cold refreshing drink where as the German iced coffee had no ice. My boyfriend got the coconut mocha iced coffee which he said was delicious. I will definitely give it another try when I'm in the Portsmouth area. read more
