I have to start this by saying that Aromas Bakery was, BY FAR, the easiest and most professional, of any of the vendors I worked with for my wedding. Their service is top-notch and their cakes are not only gorgeous, but insanely delicious! I was lucky to have stumbled upon their website when googling local bakeries, and was immediately captivated by the beautiful cakes, which could only be described as works of art. I reached out and spoke with Jo-Ann and she provided me with a quote and arranged a tasting. At the tasting, I loved all of the flavors so much that I asked if I could do a different flavor for each tier of my wedding cake- she was happy to oblige and didn't charge me any extra for doing multiple flavors! I emailed her pictures of my vision for the cake and she brought it to life. The cake was absolutely gorgeous and, even better, sooo tasty! I chose a pumpkin spice with buttercream filling for the first tier, chocolate with chocolate buttercream filling for the second tier, and the top tier was vanilla with a raspberry buttercream filling. The whole cake was then covered in buttercream icing. It was rich and dense in the best way and had such a nice, thick layer of icing (which is my favorite part). Absolutely delicious and I received so many compliments for the cake! Jo-Ann was truly a pleasure to work with because she was so kind, patient, and responsive. A true artist and professional. I reached out to Aromas a little over a week before my mom's 70th birthday for which I'd been hoping to have a cake replica made of her harmonium (an Indian instrument sorta like a stationary accordion). Jo-Ann and I sorted out most of the details via email and phone but she offered to meet so we could go over everything and we could both make sure we were on the same page. Jo-Ann is extremely detail oriented about her artistic projects and did a lot of research on her own in addition to the info I provided to get the details so perfect that the cake actually looked like the real thing! Two lovely ladies that go above and beyond. I had a very specific dream of having small different flavored cakes on each table at my wedding. They made this come true w/o quoting me at some astronomical price. ...AND THE CAKE WAS AMAZING. The wedding day cake was even better than it was in the tasting! I have a wheat allergy and several guests had other food requests / allergies that popped up during RSVPs -- they were all easily accommodated by these ladies. They didn't miss a beat -- or a taste bud! I didn't get to try the regular cakes bc of my allergy but my husband tells me the gluten free was just as good :) They are organized, punctual and responsive. They even provided cake utensils when we needed them last minute. They did our wedding cake and it was so delicious and the design was beautiful, it's been almost 3 months and people still talk about it! We met with Jo-Ann and her sister months before the wedding to do a tasting and we had so much fun. They made small cupcakes to show different combinations of cake/filling/frosting, which were all very flavor-full and delicious. We ended up going with vanilla with guava filling and coconut frosting and it was PERFECT. I've been waiting for Aromas to open up for a while now, and I can't tell you how excited I am about it. I stopped in to grab a couple small things to bring to a breakfast and so I picked up the Cheddar and Chive Biscuit and Best Pumpkin Cake In The World (hard to forget name!). The Cheddar and Chive biscuits, although scone shaped, were beautifully made and incredibly tasty, and I felt the price was very reasonable ($2.50), while the Pumpkin Cake ($3 for a small slice) was moist and spiced perfectly. I think they're still getting things together like mark c. mentioned, but the ladies in the shop were friendly and very welcoming. In this neighborhood, there's Evelyn's as well, but here there is seating and the space is fantastic. I really hope more Yelpers come check it out (stop by on your way to or from Costco/Target!), because it definitely has potential to be a great neighborhood hangout. Gluten-free pumpkin cake! Upon their opening my husband and I balked a bit at the $2.25 coffee price tag, but prices seem to have tempered and the ladies behind the counter are lovely. The space grows a little more magical as time goes on: countertops lined with jars full of swirling sugar; warm loaves reflected in chrome; the shine of crystalized sweet and charm. Jo-Ann and her team were fantastic!!!! We came by her shop and had a tasting and went over the cake details with her. She wrote down everything and listened to us regarding exactly what we wanted. The strawberry cake with strawberry french buttercream we got was delicious! And the wedding cake itself was absolutely beautiful. I'm visiting from San Francisco and am so happy I found this place! ERMAHGADD! THEIR PUMPKIN CAKE! This is truly the best! Perfect texture, perfect mix of spices and just a light drizzle of cream cheese frosting. I was greeted by the friendliest pastry chef Joann who owns the place with her sister. Got recommendations but I was sold on the pumpkin cake. I grabbed a tres leches bread pudding as well which I have yet to eat. Took everything to go and stuffed my face with the pumpkin cake as soon as I got back to my apt. I ate it cold but it was AMAZING! Prices are your usual gourmet pastry places but is it worth it? I was looking for a boutique bakery to prepare a custom cake for my daughter's gender reveal party. Bakeries in NYC are few and far between, however. My search led me to a web page for Aromas Bakery, and there was a review there--from someone who had ordered a gender-reveal cake from them, and was thrilled with the result. Seemed like a good omen, so I called and spoke with the wonderful Chef Jo-Ann, who runs the bakery with her sister, Chef Eileen. My daughter wanted the cake to be a surprise reveal, since she hadn't been told the baby's gender yet. She asked for a cake where the actual cake itself, and the icing between layers, would be blue or pink, depending. Her OB-GYN gave her a scratch-off card that would reveal the gender, and we stuck the unscratched card in a sealed envelope for the bakery. The cake was gorgeous, ready when we needed it, and weighed a ton--it was so full of quality ingredients. Then my daughter cut into it! Ta-Dahhhhh! A beautiful and delicious cake that was perfect for the reveal. Jo-Ann and Eileen are both sweethearts, easy to work with and mindful of any suggestions you might make. Then you need new friends.If you have then you can relate to my experience stepping inside this bakery/café in East Harlem a.k.a. El Barrio. The first impression you get walking in is that somehow you've walked into the employee-only section of someone's culinary laboratory but that's quickly diffused by the pastry-centric charms scattered all around the place in the form of canvas paintings, jars full of goodies, and other cute oddities. This place is indeed a curious fusion between your traditional sit-down coffee shop and an old school bakery with glass refrigerators displaying pastries and sandwiches. In true foreshadowing fashion it should be said up front that what you see pales in comparison to what you're about to taste...in a good way. The ladies at helm are Jo-Ann and Eileen, two sisters who you will immediately become enamored with upon the first five minutes of conversation. They are the warmest, most welcoming people you will meet; the heart and soul of Aromas. They're customer service and rapport go way above the bar of excellence usually reserved for the Apple store employees. You can tell that this business is a true labor of love and can't help become personally invested in their success after only one encounter. Now to the nitty gritty. The coffee is strong and definitely priced fairly. Their cannolis, stuffed to order, are DIVINE! The cream is not as puffy as you might expect but the taste is BAM BAM BAM! The shell is perfectly flaky. The pumpkin cake which they have dubbed 'the world's best' might actually live up to its claim. I recommend you let it sit for 10 minutes first before doing your best not to swallow it along side a cup of coffee. I also bought a small container of the 'Aroma Sampler' which contained a mini red velvet cupcake, mini pumpkin cupcake, small piece of blonde brownie, and chocolatey ganache cupcake. All were exceptionally tasty and miles ahead of anything 'baked by Melissa', 'Crumbs', or 'Brooklyn Cupcake' can offer and priced much better. You should also know that they have one of the widest arrays of gluten-free and sugar free offerings I have seen in a while. They have worked hard to make sure tastiness has not been sacrificed at the altar of health consciousness. Last but not least this is a proper bakery as well. They have a portfolio of amazing and impossible looking creations which can ordered for any special occasions. I have yet to taste any of their sandwich offerings but based on what I have sampled so far I will venture to say that it will be awesome. I need to come back soon. These ladies have brought some super quality offerings to East Harlem. I hope the neighborhood can appreciate and rally around this amazing effort. Words cannot begin to express the monumental role that lead Creative Cake Designer Jo-Ann, Chef Eileen and their amazing team played once Jo-Ann carefully reconsidered and agreed to fully accept taking on this tall order of a task literally at the eleventh hour with a very narrow time constraint under less than desirable circumstances after initially and understandably declining to take on my huge project. After asking Jo-Ann to reconsider while explaining the horrible position, I was placed in at the hands of a specialty bakery I initially started with and prayerfully/respectfully hoping to appeal to Jo-Ann's better nature, Jo-Ann agreed to speak with her team to discuss if they had the bandwidth to take on this project without compromising their existing workload and without compromise to an additional project. By the grace of God and once Jo-Ann met with her team and determined that they could meet the inherent challenges and expectations for this life cake project, Aromas Boutique Bakery were fully committed, engaged and removed an enormous burden from me, two weeks prior to the event. The vision in my mind for my mother's 80th milestone birthday celebration also centered around a "Cake Walk - Down Memory Lane" program segment with the focal point on a gourmet specialty customized cake, which embodied major milestone events in my mother's life artistically and creatively displayed through objects of significance in the chronological order in which they occurred while capturing the colors along with the theme of the celebration. Jo-Ann completely bought into my vision and was on a mission to bridge the concept mapped in my mind to full fruition. This project was so much more than just about a cake, as my vision of this beautiful, delectable, artistic creation would also have to chronicle the monumental moments of my mother's life journey and Jo-Ann soldiered the full weight of that responsibility with complete confidence and love. Thank you Jo-Ann, Chef Eileen, and the fabulous team for treating this unique life cake project with the honor and respect it deserved and required while amazingly crafting such a beautiful work of art. With their excellent communications and listening skills, Jo-Ann and Eileen always kept me in the loop at all times with detailed follow ups and presented fresh creative ideas in a collaborative fashion throughout the entire process. This amazing sister duo are true class acts as well as consummate professionals evidenced by accommodating me and my husbands hectic schedules and meeting with us on a Sunday - a day when typically their business is closed. Jo-Ann went above and beyond the call of duty as she researched, reserved, and covered the parking garage fee for our scheduled tasting and consultation for that day. The parking garage facility was highly recommended and within a half of a block walking distance from Aromas Boutique Bakery's downtown office. This kind deed was very much appreciated as my husband and I were commuting from New Jersey. The highlight was meeting these wonderful ladies, "I now call my angels from above" for the first time and the icing on the cake "no pun intended" was indeed the phenomenal cake flavors we sampled during the tasting along with the custom blend icings and fillings - Oh My Goodness! Chef Eileen is outstanding! She provided our group of friends with an entertaining and delicious evening, hosting a remote cooking class Zoom. We were emailed a list of great sweet and savory options from which to select our cooking class theme and had plenty of time and instruction to gather groceries and prep ingredients beforehand. Throughout the class, Chef Eileen offered clear and helpful tips for our meal and ways in which to improve overall cooking techniques, such as the best way to sauté vegetables. We finished the class with delicious results (homemade empanadas!) and were so happy to have a fun evening together despite the need to be distanced from each other. Would definitely take another cooking class with Chef Eileen to learn more advanced cooking techniques! The worse cake ever. We ordered a cake for shower we payed 350.00 when the girls got the cake the cake was pretty but not what was asked for. The cake was an hour late and we checked in the morning they said it would be done. The cake was smaller then anticipated and anywhere else would have cost 100-125 dollars. The fondant was mediocre and the filling was ok but the cake itself was dry and semi hard. Only one part of the design came out as expected. They certainly ripped us off and we will not be using their services again I would rather use little Debbie. read more
