I just thought it was important to start with the employees bc everyone there was so welcoming, patient, and kind to each person who walked through their doors. There was this one guy who was there ordering a cake for his son's graduation. His son only requested to have Lloyd's carrot cake for his graduation and moving out of the city party. Out of all the bakeries and cakes in NYC, this soon to be college kid wanted Lloyd's...it makes sense. The employees went through all of the different cake sizes as I watched attentively at each cake being presented...I may have been drooling, who knows. I always dream of just buying an entire cake, just me and the cake, but alas, I got a carrot cake slice as well as a carrot cake cupcake and red velvet cupcake. It wasn't just for me...my pastry chef to be son was with me, so it was really nice to share in tasting carrot cake from this legendary bakery. First reaction of the carrot cake slice, it is super moist...and perhaps I could eat an entire cake. We agreed that every aspect of the cake was absolutely delicious. It was light whereas most carrot cakes feel dense, it was perfectly sweet, whereas most carrot cakes are either too sweet or not sweet enough. The frosting complimented the cake wonderfully too, which I love. It was just perfection and each bite made you want to have another. The red velvet cupcake was a winner as well. I made a sandwich of it with the cream cheese frosting in the middle and we were very happy. Seating is nice, the shop is spacious and clean, there are areas to charge. It is a nice set up. I've saved Lloyd's in my to-go list for some time now but never had the chance to visit, mainly because it felt out of the way from where I lived, and I didn't exactly have a reason to be in the area. Well, I recently had been in the area, and it was the perfect time to try this shop that I've had my eye on. You can't visit Lloyd's without trying the bake of its namesake, so I of course ordered a slice of the carrot cake. The cake itself was moist and dense, full of nuts and raisins. You can order it plain as well, but for me? I wanted the whole shebang. The cream cheese frosting was incredibly sweet, as cream cheese frosting ought to be. The cake, overall, was delicious. If you're in the same boat as me, and you have Lloyd's in your list but haven't had a reason to come to this area, let me give you one: Visit the Museum of the City of New York or the Museum Del Barrio on 5th and 100th street. This was a spot that I'd been interested in visiting for years, and I'm happy to report that they didn't disappoint. Staff was extra helpful and informed me that there are 2 types carrot cake; one with nuts and raisins and one without, I got 2 of each. The cake was amazingly soft and flavorful. Where this cake stood out in my opinion was the icing, it wasn't super sweet and it complemented the cake so well. Was a solid first experience with carrot cake! It definitely was better than I'd imagine but wasn't exactly my preference in flavor. The cake could use extra sugar, it wasn't sweet enough, and could be softer/more moist as it was pretty tough/bumpy/hard. Love the icing though. Also nice touch of personalized birthday message if you want. Pretty good deal, it was $35 for a huge cake which I've never seen before (I forgot how big it was, probably at least 8in?). The plain carrot cake was perfectly balanced -- not too sweet, super moist, and honestly good enough to eat with just your fingers. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and they quickly helped me choose the right size cake for a birthday (10-inch for the win!). The ambiance isn't exactly Instagram-worthy. Floors were a bit messy, and the "uniform" is basically whatever they rolled in wearing. It definitely feels like incredible cakes are being created in a humble, hole-in-the-wall spot. One tip: I grabbed walnuts and birthday decorations from Dollar Tree and added the walnuts on top -- game changer. The carrot cake flavor jumps up a level with that added crunch. So good, it feels like it should come standard. Would I go back? Absolutely -- that carrot cake is worth it. Heard some hype by word-of-mouth and had to go in myself. Small space, grab-and-go type of place. Candidly, the worker was cheerless and dismal, but it seemed like the type of energy where you knew the food would be exceptionally delicious. And it was! Plus they feature a cute cartoon carrot as their logo which I cannot resist.  This location is minuscule and is essentially a kitchen with a counter for selling prepackaged slices. If you somehow aren't a fan of carrot cake, there are other cakes to try such as chocolate and coconut. The woman helping us was soft-spoken but polite.  Given how dense the slices were, they were a steal for $5! I did find the frosting to be a bit too sweet and needing more cream cheese tang and the moistness almost too oily (soybean oil is listed as the second ingredient after carrots), but overall, I was satisfied. It's relevant for me to cite that Lloyd's was referred by a longtime resident of the Bronx, and Llyod's is a staple to the BX community. I took their recommendation to heart and decided to order a carrot cake in advance of National Carrot Cake Day. I placed my order via email with no credit card required, so that let me know they are old school and live on the honor code (I liked that). I arrived Saturday morning from New Jersey to pick up my order (carrot cake and coconut cake), which were ready. The storefront was a bit old, and the inside was small, crowded and not as sanitary as I would hope to see a bakery. There were multiple teens working, which was very nice to see. They accept major credit cards and apple pay, and of course cash. For two cakes it was about $51. MOMENT OF TRUTH...the cakes did not live up to the hype. It was pure dough and lots of sugar. Wow! My friends at work bought me a carrot cake from here and it was amazing! So good, that I ordered a 12 inch plain carrot cake for my husband's retirement party. It was worth driving into the city for it! It was a HUGE hit. So delicious, not too sweet-just perfect. And the cream cheese frosting was out of this world. The 12 inch round cake easily fed my 20 guests. We had a whole half a cake left over which we demolished a few days later. Initially, I just ordered this size for my family before the party ( with intention of freezing most of it) bc I wasn't sure it would keep for a week, but when I picked it up the staff assured me it would still be good so I saved it for the party. Small cake shop with just limited choices. I decided to try this location due to Instagram influencer. I'm surprised both locations are list surviving off selling limited cakes. I bought red velvet and carrot cake with raisins and nuts. They have plain options for allergy concerns. Both cakes were moist but lacked the flavor. The best part was the icing. Reasonable price for giant slices but the influencers over hyped the flavor. Unless they have a different pallet than me but I'm pretty refined. Stopped over in Harlem to grab a few slices for a friend's birthday and an 8" cake for my mom. I called ahead to see if there would still be cakes available arriving 30 minutes before they close, at 7pm. While the 10" cake require a 2 day advance notice, there were plenty of 8" cakes available. Two options of carrot cakes are available on the menu. There is a plain version and with/without nuts and raisins. Get the walnuts and raisins. The single slices are generous and the cake is a dense, muffin-like texture. This cake is very moist and not overly sweet, the natural sweetness from the carrots shine through each bite. There's a beautiful caramelization and molasses richness on the bottom of the cake. The raisins provide moisture and added sweetness. There is no single overpowering spice like cinnamon, nutmeg, or clove that you find in other carrot cakes. The flavor is balanced and mild. The thick layer of cream cheese icing is light on the cream cheese, which removes the sometimes tangy flavor you get from day a New York cheese cake. The cake held up well while I traveled from 99th st to 18th and sat through a two hour performance to trek back to Jersey with it. The Lloyd's in Harlem felt bare bones, with limited space and a chair where a customer could rest. But this is a walk up, order, and leave type of location. I was surprised at the amount of inventory available so late in the day. It was nice to see a variety of options like coconut and strawberry cake available, but I was there for the carrots! There was a staff of three when I arrived. Two appeared to be mixing while one was more front of house. The man who took my order seemed to be the same who answered the phone to help me out an hour before making the journey. He was friendly and efficient with my order. Cakes are stacked along the walls and get neatly tied with bakery string. The plastic bag packaging has a firm bottom which helped the cake survive the subway and bus travel without breaking or tilting. read more

I love carrot cake so there was no way I was going to miss this stop at Lloyd's. Our first couple of bites seemed promising but overall their carrot cake was average at best. We ordered a slice with nuts and raisins. The cake is very moist and dense which I loved. And I always love nuts in my carrot cake for texture. But there wasn't much complexity in the flavor. There wasn't much spice to it, a bit plain though not overly sweet. The cream cheese was a a little off ratio to the thickness of the cake, thought it was good and pretty sweet. I also ordered a German Chocolate cake slice and that was a total miss. It was just as thick and dense as the carrot cake slice but so dry. If there was more frosting perhaps in the middle, that might have helped, but the icing was a bit sparse as well. Customer service in the store was transactional, but standing right outside was a man who was friendly and said, "It's so good right?" Appreciated his warmth and friendliness though unsure if he was a customer or affiliated to the store. There are a few other cake options to choose from and you can buy by the slice or whole. Outrageously affordable, $25 ($29 with walnuts and raisins) for an 8" cake for 8-10 large appetites. The thing probably weighs 3 pounds! The young woman who rung me up said they were trying out a new lemon cake, so she gave me a slice of the lemon cake, and I bought a slice of the carrot with nuts and raisins. The lemon cake was very dense and not too flavorful. I decided to try it another way, so split the cake in 1/2 and put a slice in my Nutri-bullet with some ice cream. I still didn't like it. Delicious carrot cake here. The young man Scott hooked me up with a free slice since it was my first time here. They are very fairly priced. It's about $4 a slice if I remember correctly. Cake wasn't overtly sweet & the cream was so tasty. I tried both carrot cakes- with & without nuts & both were equally good. On the weekends the line gets long & you might have to wait a while which is why I went on a weekday morning & no line.
