I am so disappointed in this place. The experience there was great from Madison the bartender. She was very attentive. But the owners not so much. It was a Sunday and there were literally all of 6 people in the establishment. Everything was great until the bill came. I was told my card was taken from the owner and given to one of the regulars after realizing I was charged. The owner was on the phone the whole time and told the server to wait one second during us speaking about my card. I am in service and I am also an entrepreneur myself so I have an extreme amount of patience but the nonchalant attitude from hi m was incredible. He tells me this happens all the time and I have nothing to worry about because the person will bring it back. Ok, I know that that's a possibility so I say to him ok so I may cancel my card because I don't know who this person is. He then goes to say, then how will you pay for your bill? I have other cards of course but that's what you are worried about after you gave someone else my card and they took it home?! Wow. Then I say why should I leave my card he says I should trust that he will get my card back. I don't know him, but the waitress was so nice I felt like ok, I traded Instagram info with her and gave her my number. I also didn't want her to pay for anything that the owner may have done since he was the one that gave my card to someone else. My friend that I was with also debated with him as well for about 10 min, the owner even took his mask off to prove a point so we could hear him and I politely told him to put it back on. Anyways my card was returned the next day and I picked it up today but I didn't get another apology, a shot a comp meal for my troubles a drink NOTHING remorseful which is what I would've done as a server and owner. I ALSO PAID MY FULL BILL. This was an atrocious experience and although the space was beautiful I am sad I can't return because no one should be treated that way. read more

SUPER OILY! It seems like the majority of the items on the list is oily. I ordered the fish and veggie empanadas, although they tasted good, oil was just running out of them. Also ordered the fish (blue fish), and sweet plantains. I like that the plantains were cooked to my liking, and so was the fish, but there was nothing special about the fish. If fried foods are your thing, then this place is great for you. Its also quite humid in there during the summer, and sitting out back is filled with flies. The trendy staff is gracious and attentive. The drinks are also big, tropical and full of booze - always pleasing to the masses. Know by many names, this is the space behind Gureje Boutique. You may know it as The Village, Art Cafe, or Renate Albertsen-Marton Gallery. They have always-rotating art lining the walls and stage, it's been different every time I go there. The bar is somewhat new, no taps yet but full service. It's cash only, but there are some pretty cheap options ($4 PBRs... you still exist!) should you be low on dollar bills. Art Cafe is a very multipurpose space, they do comedy nights, live music, art classes/shows, etc. There's a nice-looking courtyard space just outside the bar, I'm sure it's a great spot when the weather's warm! Unfortunate place to stumble upon Part 2. I ordered a pair of their mini empanadas. Not only were they extremely mini, but they were very wonton-ish. Aside from mislabeled menu items, I was offered hot sauce that would incur an additional .75 cents. The exterior ambiance is a great addition to the neighborhood. Very unfortunate place to stumble upon, walked in with a group of friends to what appeared to be a friendly place to only be greeted with a condescending and outright rude owner, she was unpleasant in tone towards us and her own staff. A misunderstanding in one of our orders should have easily been resolved with bringing us the correct order, instead we the owner lectured us and her own staff. On top of the lack of professionalism, the food was sub-par and not worth 1/4 of the price. Would never spend a penny here again or recommend anyone to visit this place. read more

One of the worst jobs I've ever trained for. The owner sets the mood and ambiance for the place to have good vibrations but once you enter, it's nothing but poor unfortunate souls. The wife is very stagnant.... weird... and unwelcoming. The owner can be friendly at times, but can turn into Gordon Ramsey ( there can only be one Gordon). It was a girls 4th day of training and he yelled at her in front of customers. There is no "one position" you are a cook, bartender, cashier, and janitor at the same time. The prices don't match up to the taste of the food. They create this organic lifestyle but their personalities are fast food. I wouldn't recommend a dying animal to come in this place. The lack of consideration and communication with the wife Brianna who is the wife's owner is unbelievable. It's 7.00 an hour and you pool your tips when half of the workers there don't even look the customers in the eyes. Poor service; . I just can't. Had to write this review for anyone who was interested going there as a worker and as a customer. The owners need to change their attitude and make their food better . Really delectable home-crafted food, and wonderfully brewed, deeply healing medicinal teas. They heard my friend coughing yesterday and gave us some on the house. Very sweet people run things in this nice calm atmosphere, moving at a more human pace than at most establishments these days. The outdoor area is perfect for all sorts of gatherings, or simply for sunning yourself, with lots of plants and color. The indoor area has a nice little bar by the front door that is nice to work at, and there is a big long table that would be great for a celebration with friends, as well as one good table inside for working, for meetings, for meals. They have a projector and play good music which animates the music they're playing - from old school reggae to 90s R&B and the good kind of triphop - and makes everything feel a bit whimsical and profound all at once. Disagree with the fellow who said things seem run-down. I think they really keep things in shape and keep the quality up - they're just not trying to bring in crazy volume, don't seem to be pushing quantity at the expense of quality. It's not full of people, and if you feel uncomfortable with being in a place that doesn't seem "in demand" with long lines for no apparent reason. Personally I hate those places and I love places like this, where you can talk to your friends without everyone at your elbows overhearing you, and it's also quiet enough so that you can think straight and have a nice conversation. My first time here- it had just rained and I was meeting a client for an interview for an art magazine. Proprietors were lovely (must get their names!) and had Pineapple mimosas and smoked outside and it was a lovely chilled out atmosphere with great mellow 1990s soul and hip hop playing, bringing me back to my youth...a wonderful establishment and I look forward to returning. The chicken empanada didn't have much chicken in it at all, mostly rice. My Arnold Palmer was all lemonade. This place is probably cute when the weather is nice and you can sit outdoors for a drink. Inside is junky and oddly orchestrated. An uncomfortable church pew represents some of the seating. The food is indescribably tasteless, I can't believe people had positive reviews on the food. They also silently charge for sauce by the way, sauce that you simply need to get though the terrible empanadas. The rice plantain and bean empanadas had about one rice grain and one bean, all mashed plantain that wasn't even a good plantain by the way. Apparently the meat empanadas had hardly any meat in them either. Drinks were OKAY. Just that, okay. Nothing to brag about. A very fake artsy and mediocre place that makes good empanada spots look bad. Please don't advertise for foods that you aren't good at making. Just lead with happy hour. People walk off the street and into this place for a subpar empanada when they could just be passing by for a quick mediocre drink. Empanadas should be amazing everywhere in New York. The owner is hostile - BEWARE. A few days ago, I had a horrifying experience with the owner Jimi and because of that I will NEVER go back. I arrived ready to drop off a deposit for a community event we'd been planning for many weeks. I still had some final questions about the sound capabilities that I had been told to direct to him. I was surprised when Jimi was unwilling to answer my questions despite the fact that the bar was open and completely empty except for me. When I raised this point, he quickly escalated the situation by interrupting me and responding with real rage: "YOUR PARTY IS CANCELLED! YOUR BUSINESS IS NO LONGER WELCOME HERE - GET OUT!" As you can imagine I was shocked and shaken. Given the inoffensive nature of my question, I can only assume some prejudice to my age, gender or race was behind his actions (or some sort of emotional volatility).
