Needed dance lessons for a wedding, found this place on yelp, and contacted through their website. I received a follow up call the next day and was told they have two options: come in for one free lesson (and subsequently pay more for the next one), or pay a lower average price for 2. We were allowed to decide which option we wanted after our free lesson. They are open late on week nights which worked for our schedule so we went in on a Fri at 9pm. They are tucked away next a small strip mall off of PCH in a quiet area with good parking. When we entered, the place was festive and they were finishing up a group dance where everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Many of the instructors came up to introduce themselves to us and were very welcoming. Once the group dance was over, we had an initial consultation with the owner and then he had one of the instructors give us a lesson. The lesson was fun and easy to learn. After the lesson, we went back in the owner's office and he gave us a hard sell, telling us the prices and packages they offer. It is understandable and acceptable that this is a business and they need to make money to keep the business running but this was my least favorite part of the experience. Since we felt the first lesson was not enough, we signed up for the 2 lesson package and came in the following week again. The 2nd lesson felt a bit rushed compared to the first lesson but we were able to get all the steps down and to this day are practicing them at home. During the lesson, they asked if we would be coming back for more lessons, but we respectfully declined. The reason for 5 stars is, we came in and accomplished our goal in getting a dance down after 2 lessons, and as we were leaving, the owner and instructor was very genuine when saying goodbye and wishing us well. We sensed the warm and welcoming culture when we first entered, and we felt it again when saying goodbye. Who knows, perhaps we will come back again. read more

Wedding dance lessons by Kate - crash course! My fiance, Amy and I are getting married in 4 days - woohoo! We just had our last of 4 lessons by Kate at Arthur Murray in Long Beach. Even though 4 lessons does not make us DWTS winners, we have been well coached and are ready for our First Dance at the wedding. Kate was patient and understanding with our beginner level skills and my bad memory of "what steps are next again?". She was able to figure out when we needed more help, what we needed help with (the video she made walking through the steps while I video'd was a life saver for me), and how far she could push us. She choreographed our entire dance - once she figured out that was better than relying on me to simply lead impromptu style was probably not the best idea this time - to our choice of song which is "Feeling Good" by Michael Buble. Also, Donald (I believe he runs this location???) was great and made us feel like a part of the AM family from the get go. Donald and Kate even invited us to join one of the beginning classes after one of our private sessions to learn the Rhumba which was super great. Once the dust settles from our wedding this coming weekend, we will be back to join them for more dance lessons and maybe I can get good enough to jump out and just lead at will! Dancing has become one of our joys in life, in large part due to Arthur Murray Long Beach! It all began when our daughter got married, over 3 years ago. Took my girlfriend here for her birthday last night and wanted to have a good time. We paid $20 for a 30 minute dance lesson, and then there was a dance party later that evening that we were looking forward to. Michelle, our instructor, was awesome. I tried to give her a $20 tip because she was so nice, but the manager embarrassed her in front of us, snatched the money from her, and said, "She's not allowed to take this." Wow, that sucked. Then, and this happened not only once, but twice, where we were brought into his office where he kept trying to upsell us to buy more lessons. I kept telling him that my girl was in from out of town and that we were not going to buy any more lessons. But he didn't listen to us. His supposed jokes of, "Well I hope you buy 8 more lessons, haha...grunt, grunt" were so aggravating and annoying that we finally left. I felt like we were at a used car lot being harassed by a slimy car salesman. Oh... and this was in the Long Beach location. STAY AWAY FROM LONG BEACH! read more

I'm really sorry to see that some people have had a bad experience at Arthur Murray Long Beach. That is certainly not the case for my husband and me! We have been dancing over a year now and we couldn't be happier! Dancing is the one thing that we do together and luckily, we both love it! You certainly don't need a partner to join in the fun though, there are lots of individuals who come to dance with the teachers. The teachers are real dance professionals. The atmosphere is fun and everyone at the studio is very warm and welcoming to newcomers. So, if you love music, want to learn to dance and make some new friends this may be the place for you! As an added benefit, dancing makes you use your brain as well as your body and it is great exercise! I hope this was helpful. Literally just left the studio after our first lesson and we couldn't be more happy with how the lesson went. We've never taken one before, so I was nervous that I might feel weird or out of place but I was so wrong. I made my appointment with Jessica and she was so lovely and answered all my questions. Best dance instruction for individuals. I took the intro 2 lesson special, then signed up for a month, then a year. I like the private lessons and attention and with private lessons have access to group lessons and two parties each week. As much of a social group than dance instruction. The instructors follow a real curriculum with basic steps for each style of dancing you're interested in learning. The Arthur Murray approach is a system and if you want to really learn how to dance it works and I've learned more patterns and moves than I ever expected in just two months. I tried learning at a club with a free lesson for a $5 cover charge and learned with a stranger who was also new. Didn't work. This does so give it a try. You get what you pay for in everything, including dance lessons. read more

My Fiance and I started taking dance lessons at Arthur Murray for our first dance in early June 2013 and just finished our last private lesson last night and it was great. Obviously, we ain't no experts now but we have tons of fun. The teachers and staffs are so nice and personable. You might think you have two left feet and can left dance, but, guess what? Arthur Murray can make it happen. As long as you can walk, you can dance! (I swear that's what they told us during our first class!) Yes, their programs might be a little bit more expensive compared to other dance studios, but in my opinion, it's worth every penny. You pay for the program which includes certain amount of private lessons (1 on 1) AND UNLIMITED group classes. So whether it's worth it or not, it's entirely up to you. You can come every night if they have classes available at your level. Their group classes are very organized (by different levels) and the group are generally small (6 - 10 people tops). We typically come three to four times a week. For the private lessons, whether you are just going by yourself or as a couple, it's the same price! Other than the group or private lessons, they also have parties. (Wednesday and sometime Friday night). It is a very good way for us to practice and learn different dance and dance with different people. Even though Edgar is our teacher for the private lessons, Other teachers would initiate to teach us other dances during the party as well. Speaking of Edgar, he is awesome! My Fiance and I can be a little bit weird at times, but Edgar put up with us and very very patience. He is very knowledgeable and very good dancer. He understand our needs and struggles and would help us work through it. Overall, we are very very happy with Arthur Murray. I think if you are interested but not sure, give it a try. They have a small charge for try-outs (introductory lesson). Go see if this is for you, I am sure you will at least have fun. read more

As first time dance students, everyone in the studio made us feel comfortable and right at home. At our request she taught us bachata, salsa, merienge, and few social steps. I purchased the classes through living social but they are surprisingly affordable without the voucher. It includes social dance parties, that look pretty cool. I now have a new family. I never competed in sports or anything else until now. Two weeks I went to my "preview" part for last Sunday's competition, my first. Everyone there called my name and cheered for me, something my parents never did for me. I have to tell you, it brought tears to my eyes for the first time ever. I have been going to Long Beach Arthur Murray for nearly ten years. This is my happy place. I went in wanting to be a good social dancer and now I am a competitive dancer. Thanks to the many different and amazing instructors over the years, my confidence and poise have also grown. Not everyone chooses to compete. There program is designed for anyone's journey. Some people come in to get ready for a cruise or wedding. Others take lessons and go to the many group classes and parties.
