Went for the instructional class, and the instructor(Jay) was GREAT! He knew his stuff. We sat in a small room, and got introduced to the firearms we were shooting, and all the safety rules. He told us great examples of how NOT to handle a gun, and showed us the proper way. A+ for the instructor. The shooting booths.. The place is DARK. The party next to us was rapid firing an AK, and it likely had a muzzle brake. I felt huge shocks in my chest every time he shot. Overall the shooting was ok. After shooting, we went to go check out some firearms for sale. The instructor was showing us some firearms.. and I was talking to my group of friends about how I just bought a rifle exactly the same as the one on the wall and was waiting for the rifle to arrive, when one of the shopkeepers overheard the price I got it for. He called me a liar MULTIPLE times, and had such a attitude in his voice. I asked our instructor to show me the rifle so I can get a good quick feel for it. While I was taking a look at the rifle, the rude shopkeeper comes to me, and orders me to give the rifle back! I've never experienced such a rude shopkeeper ever! I wish I could give zero stars, I just got my FOID card so I decided to go there range for my first time with my Military Friend who knows a thing or 2 about guns. The Service was unbelievably terrible. There is lack of signs to tell people where to check in for range and when you ask you get an attitude. Definitely not a place for a beginner I FELT LIKE I WAS NOT WELCOMED. I had a pocket full of cash and a brand new credit card to purchase a firearm but they will not earn my buisness. Crowded, dimly lit, and messy. I was there on a weekend afternoon about a year ago. The range was dimly lit to the point that it was very difficult to see the outcome of my shots at even 10 yards out. It was crowded to the point that I had to park down the street in another business's parking lot. The range was packed - every stall full for every time slot. And spent casings scattered everywhere. Article II is very functional as a gun store and as a "pack 'em in like sardines and let them blast away" range. But I prefer a range with more personal space, better lighting, and kept in better condition. read more

i have mixed feelings about this place. I decided to go shooting with my wife and take her to pick out a new gun. i came in the store part it was pretty busy. the man who helped me was nice but needed help (maybe more young blood). the man over all was nice and helpful. We then went to go shoot in the range. The guy at the counter in the range had no idea what was going on or prices or anything seemed like he was there to half way retire/hangout. We got what we needed from him eyes and ears and targets and went shooting. The range was nice everything worked and was fairly clean for a range. After shooting i decide to go back into the store to price out a gun i had with me to possibly sell or trade in towards the purchases of a new handgun for my wife. Here is where my big problem with this place happens. as i am walking up to the counter one of the employes go over to the man thats about to help me and tells him to not spend time with me and to work on something else. (pretty much dont give me the time of day) the man was Bald i think with glasses around 40ish i think he had a cop badge on. I have no idea why this man said this to the employee that was about to help me. my wife and i were nicely dressed, not rude, both had FOID cards on counter and have never been in the store before. We were there to BUY and had deep pockets. The man who ended up helping me was great and spent time with me regardless to what the other man who worked there had said. The comment from this employee really pissed me off. Who the hell does he think he is??? Finally my bro & BFF went for the first time and boy was I extremely excited my smile was ear to ear until some mean Rude af employees had to ruin our day! I was so pissed off! At first he tried to rip us off and then we end up paying and trying to go through with this rude A-hole and not let him ruin our day. But then it was just getting worser by the minute. So we asked for a refund b/c we wanted to leave and NO REFUND! We didn't even get to do anything and he told us to leave. As a NRA member I will never go back to this place. This is based only on the range. Walk in to range area and there are people everywhere. Can't figure that one out since the lanes suck so much. No clear signage to direct you where to go. Yep they have guns and there's a range, In my humble opinion the safety here is terrible the customer service was not to be found. The shooting lanes were crowded the was lighting poor, I would have to think accidents are a common problem here, this is in stark contrast to the police state at mega sports in plainfield where you're lucky to grace there lanes. If you can take the drive to GAT guns or on target you will be pleasantly surprised at what a shooting lanes should be like that also includes mega sports good place heavy on rules thats not all bad. read more

This will always be my "first". I have never shot a handgun before, but have been very interested in them. I have handled hunting rifles before, so I know what I am doing a little. I give Nathan (I believe that's his name) a million stars. He is downright awesome, and he's SO easy to talk to, unlike a lot of the employers there. He is why we went back basically from the first time we were there. Let me start out by saying we had range reservations last week, and we suddenly had to cancel due to my husband getting called into work. The man over the phone was frustrated with us doing so. Unfortunately, things come up, and we had no other choice. So we re-booked reservations for this past Friday. Prices vary from cheap to gouging. For 2 of us in one lane, we paid over $110.00 for 90 minutes of time. We got our guns and went into the range. It was SO COLD I froze! Actual parts of my body were going numb. I guess you have to wear your winter jacket to shoot? Anyways, I had a Taurus .22 Revolver, and my husband was shooting a Springfield XD9 9mm. I am so glad Nathan started me out with a revolver because the first guy gave me a Beretta 9mm and it was too much, even my husband couldn't believe the recoil! They only had enough .22 bullets for 100 rounds for me, which kind of bummed me out, I could have shot off another 50, I was enjoying it immensely. I was NOT enjoying the assault rifles blasting off next to me, damn near making me jump out of my own skin with ear plugs AND ear muffs in. I had to wait 10 minutes to get 2 targets from the guys who run the target area, because they were not paying attention to me. Then my husband got caught up in the moment and accidentally rapid fired a clip, and the old guy walked into the range and gave him crap right in front of everyone. He wasn't even going to let him keep his target!! It was an accident, we shot normal the whole time we were in there, he could have waited till we got out to say something. I walked out feeling extremely embarrassed because we just got scolded like kids. He continued to be EXTREMELY rude until my husband apologized over and over and he finally warmed up to us a little bit. It's very hit and miss with the staff. There are some extremely nice, helpful guys, then there are some rude ones. All together we had fun though. read more

I wish there was another range around here this place is overpriced and some of the staff are just downright rude. I highly suggest buying ammo beforehand or you will be forced to pay $$$ big bucks for it. It is nice the range is combined pistol and rifle unlike Gat Guns but they recently put a hour and a half limit on range time when before you could take your time now it feels like your in a rush and takes a lot of the fun out of going. Its very expensive to shoot for me and my gf it's about 38 dollars just for range fees. 20 for foid card holders and I think 17 for a guest. Not my favorite place to go I'll drive the extra 30 minutes to not get treated rudely(short black haired fat guy) the mustache guy was very helpful though and very knowledegable read more

this was an awesome experience! They first teach you the mechanics of the guns, then you go into the room and take turns shooting. Only issue was, our guns kept messing up (they weren't firing when we pulled the trigger), so the guy had to keep fixing it. Other than that, everything else was great! look for deals on group on. Ive been to every range in the Chicago land area. Ive been to Article 2 several times. I'm an instructor and Range Safety Officer. This place could be 5 stars but falls short of that in many ways. First, If they are busy and the main lot is full they send you to the lot down the block. Not a big deal but the main will have plenty of empty spots and they still send you down the block. Once you enter you're greeted by rude staff and hardcore bad asses behind the counter. I have witnessed them dishing out attitude and rudeness to customers that come in looking for their first gun or guidance in buying. Not everyone is knowledgeable and experienced. So if you hand them a gun to hold and feel and they don't properly hold it or point it in the right direction you don't get mad. You help them, advise them and should NOT be rude! Now lets head to the gun rental counter.... The old guy there should stay at home and retire. He is grumpy and crabby. Again, no need for this. A lot of people are nervous enough coming to the range. An uninviting welcome makes it worse. Give your customers support, guidance and a smile. Now on to the counter to purchase targets, ear protection and eye protection... When the young kids are there its cool but if the old guy is there prepare yourself. He swears, yells at employees and has attitude. Now lets get to the range to shoot... It's OK but could be vastly improved. Air ventilation varies in quality, the ranges will have at least 2 stalls inoperable at any given time. Zone 4 had 2 stalls inoperable for over 3 months. Another improvement the store can benefit from as a whole is identification. Most employees have shirts bearing the business name but some don't. Not an issue for me because Ive been there enough to know who is who but when someone is new to the range and is given direction by someone who is not properly identified and doesn't introduce who they are it can be awkward and uncomfortable. The place as a whole is not bad. A lot things can be easily improved by management, procedure and guidelines. And most of all a little more friendliness! read more

This establishment is well kept, it is an amazing place to bring friends and family. The range fees are extremely reasonable and it is a great experience for new and veteran gun users. Lane capacity is superb compared to the traditional 8 lanes at other facilities. The staff are a majority of older guys and woman that are knowledgeable on a lot of firearms and techniques needed to safely and effectively use your weapon. The range officers make you feel secure and do not walk off on you or wait until you mess up to jump in to help. All these great things make for this to be one of my top recommended places to go to. Bought a Groupon for date night, so this was my first time here. Just remember, although you bought a Groupon, it's still a gun range people, NOT Disney Land. I had a great time. Might have been a little too hyper since my adrenaline was pumping or maybe the fact that I am good at this shooting thing. Will be back. Fun date to go on!! I read some of the negative reviews, but I myself, had a good experience. I mean, this is a gun store. The men who work here aren't going to have the same customer service that you would receive at a 5 star hotel. Come on! Give 'em a break. No I wasn't greeted when I walked in but I asked the first person I saw for help and he was more than happy to assist me. So no, they don't have a host standing at the door with the red carpet pulled out for you. Like I said, it's a gun store, these guys are tough and serious!! LOL. Anyways, I forgot my instructors name (it was a short name that started with an "s") but he was a great instructor. I will update if I remember his name. If you are listening to him, you will catch that he is a very funny but serious person. The actual range is very loud but once you start concentrating on your own target, you won't even pay attention to what is going on in the other lanes. Tips: If it is your first time ever going to the gun range and you have never held a gun ever in your life, I would suggest to look at a few youtube videos before you go just to have an idea about the proper handling of a firearm. (They will teach you in the class but the class is only 30 min. so just to be ahead, watch some videos). Arrive early so that you can look at the firearm rentals to decide which one you would like to choose. I chose the popular Glock 9mm. Would like to try a .45 next time. Don't expect the men to act like sweet little ladies when you walk in and then cry that they are rude. Some of these men are military people who have served our country. BEWARE OF THIS RANGE - READ BELOW Please take the time to read this whole review as it will shed light on the way they treat paying customers. First off, I would like to state that I am not new to firearms. As a resident of Indiana and a 2 year certified NRA and VTAC firearms instructor I am keen on the knowledge and competency of both using firearms and what is done as an instructor and range safety officer or shop owner. My first and only experience to this range was one that not only shocked me but also everyone who was in the building and heard it. I went with a friend from IL to this range to shoot pistol and rifle. As we walked up to the counter and started the check in process to get a lane the female behind the counter looked at me as I had 2 kydex mag carriers that were empty on my belt line without a holster for my pistol and stated in a very rude manner, refering to the range area in back, "If you walk back there with those on your belt then those guys will draw down on you and tell you to hit the f**king ground. Stand there and take it off your f**king belt now." Not only did this happen, but after I had complied, trying not to make a scene, we proceded to go to the next room and I went back to purchase ammo. She then waited for me to make my selection of Federal 40S&W before asking for my FOID card (knowing already that I am from Indiana), I proceeded to give her my Indiana concealed carry permit credentials and NRA instructor card before she stated, "If you aren't an IL resident and don't have a FOID card I won't sell you ammo, it's illegal without a FOID." I informed her that she was wrong, and that as strict as IL state laws are, any state bordering IL is able to not only purchase ammo, but also firearms. She again refused and I walked away disgusted with the ignorance and rudeness of this individual. My friend I was with then walked to the counter after I told him that she wouldn't sell me ammo so that he could purchase it himself. I told him what I wanted so that we could shoot that day and when he walked up and asked for the ammo that I wanted so that he could purchase it she said to him, "How interesting I just denied the sale of that same exact ammo to an illegal...." I was appauled at the level of disrespect shown to me and my friend at this range and would never have gone had I known this range treats its paying customers in this way. This place is just ok. It's another expensive gun store with spotty customer service. I've been here a few time and some times I get great service and some times I either get ignored or easily dismissed. There prices are pretty high compared to other guns stores in the area ( which arnt that many) however they have the only range that you can shoot high powered rifles in. Awful. Just awful. I've never been to a shooting range before, and my boyfriend was anxious to take me. He hadn't been to a shooting range in at least 10 years so he was a bit rusty when the crabby older lady behind the counter handed him a 22 and told him to clear it IN THE LOBBY. He pointed the gun toward the floor away from anyones feet while he tried to clear it. Meanwhile, she yelled at him for not doing it right causing him to lose focus. My friend and I visited Article II with a Groupon that covered our safety lesson, gun rental, and range shooting with an instructor. I had never shot a gun before in my life, and was a bit intimidated walking in, but the staff at Article II instantly made me feel comfortable. Mitch was our instructor, and he could not have been a more patient, genuine, and kind instructor. I felt comfortable asking questions without fear that I would ask something "stupid." Pros: Huge range at a decent price. Allowed to shoot rifles, shotguns and handguns, as well as different types of ammo (no tracer or incendiary ammo). Cons: The majority (not all) of the staff are either rude, old school, arrogant know-it-all-types or young, wet-behind-the-ear kids with little or no knowledge. On occasion, you may get one of the few helpful and customer-friendly guys to help you. It's hit or miss. Pricing on new and used firearms is exceptionally high, but accessories and (some) ammo is fairly priced. I was thinking about taking a group to the range here, but the reviews on Yelp, as well as their restrictions for groups (Groupons), has me inclined to stay away. read more

Me and my boyfriend did the Group On class with Joel the instructor and it was amazing! He was patient, kind, smart, and calm. The way he taught us made us relaxed in the way we handled and conducted ourselves. He made us understand the value of a gun and how safety is the most important element. I would come back 100%! Just to be clear the range and the gunsmith kick ass they are always helpful and up until recently I have been very happy with my experience. The problem comes from the fact that I bought a gun on December 8 2012 at their Beretta bash. On purchase I was told that they would have to order it and that it would be in a week here it is almost a full two months later and I still haven't received what I have paid for. The second issue comes from their customer service since i haven't received my firearm nor any calls or updates on its status I have taken it upon myself to call every week to find out the status. Some of the staff has been helpful and have genuinely tried to assist me but some have just been down rite rude. They also don't seem to understand that they have to actively call their suppliers and say hey where is my stock and when will it be in. However every time I call I get a different answer and they haven't even made the effort to find out when my gun is coming in, instead they give me a line about how they can't even keep 9mm ammo in stock which is understandable however it is irrelevant to my queries. In closing I will still use their range however I will never purchase another weapon from their establishment. read more

Terrible experience! Walked in to get a price on a trade in and purchase a new gun. I unfortunately got this older guy with a bucket hat and glasses, totally useless. I think he was in a hurry to get to lunch and wanted to blow me off. I had been to 2 other dealers prior to Article 2, my lowest trade in price was $200.00, he wanted to give me $125.00. Let me start by saying I own a handful of firearms and have owned firearms majority of my life. HOWEVER, Not my first choice. The staff are very rude and condescending. Overheard one staff member belittling someone on the phone over pistol calibers. Another staff member was checking the RMR on a customers pistol, all the while pointing the weapon right at me. He didn't seem to see the error there. You're made to feel like you're bothering them when you walk through the doors. "Shoot first ask questions later" was a phrase I heard a handful of times. "Also another one was "without sympathy or remorse, I will shoot and kill anyone who gives me a reason" yea...I don't need to be around people like this and I sure as hell don't feel safe putting in some range time where the lanes aren't even swept. I have had my foid for almost a year now. I have had a wide range of opportunities to shoot and most of the times i have been to this gun range have been pretty positive. However, I took a group there last night and had an awful experiance that has completly changed my attitude towards this place. First thing to mention is that if you know how to shoot and have time to shoot during off hours, then this is a great place to shoot. The range itself is nice and it really is the cheapest indoor range in the area. This is why i have been coming here. The other reviews also mention horrible staff. Im not going to lie and tell you they are all great. In fact, i can only think of four that are great. I have not had a good experiance with the other employees, including the owner, Barry. So my friends wife calls me and wants to do a surprise birthday party. She wants me to take him and some friends shooting. The rule there (different employees told me different variations of this rule) is that there must be one foid card per lane. So the plan was to bring the group and splits into smaller groups. 3 of the 9 of us had foids and experiance. That means we would have reserved 3 lanes, and had 3 guys per lane. I have done this in the past, just not as a larger group. The fees are $20 for the lane and $12 for each additional shooter. Rentals would be an extra $18 per lane for two guns. So $21 per person. A total of $189 plus ammo. When i called and tried to arrange this i made sure i asked about renting an AK47. The group was a bunch of russian guys so renting that rifle was the main reason for going. I was encouraged to do a class because the AK47 is not a good beginners gun. The owner, Barry, worked out a deal of $40 per person, so $400 (10 guys, one was invited after). This made sense considering there was alot of untrained guys and I was told that $10 of ammo was included in the price along with any rentals we wanted. He told me he would get us several instructers and we could all shoot at once. Awesome! We invited one more guy, after i asked permission from Barry and i collected the $40 per person. The wife also gave $150 for extra ammo if we ran out of the class ammo and the ammo i brought. I called Barry once i recieved all their payments and he put the class in the books and reviewed our agreement again. The first red flag was when i tried to confirm everything the week before. i called several times asking for barry and he was always busy. I was told, "Whatever you worked out with Barry is in the books and should work out the way he agreed to." We get to the range that day and none of the employees knew about the group. the guys behind the counter tried contacting Barry and wetre directed to the schedule. The schedule read, "$40 per person plus ammo." I tried really hard to fight it but they would not budge. They even called Barry and he agreed, $40 plus ammo. ok no big deal, we are all big boys, whats $10 more dollars. Plus i brought enough .22 to go around. So we only get one instructor, and he is not happy. He told me about 5 times to not ever bring a group that large to the range. He was rude and clearly agitated. I apologized and was as helpful as i could be but he was just not happy and nothing was going to change that. Last minute they gave us a second instructor who was a volunteer, this guy was awesome. i dont know his name but he was great. because there was onl;y two instructers, shooting my .22's and the .38 ammo we purchased took all of our reserved instructor time. we were 5 minutes over time limit and he handed me the rest of the 38 rounds and said hurry up. We need the brass back for reloading. Shoot these immediatly. i finished them off and returned the gun. He looked at me and said, "NO, there was one more .22 hand gun." I was puzzled and told him the other instructer handled that weapon, i never even touched it. He told me to go get it and that i was mistaken. Again, this guy was rude and very upset. Flustered i run back to the range and look in the intructors stalls... nothing. Im freaking out and check the range counter. Sure enough, the other instructor had the gun there. So our time with the instructor was over, and i told him i wanted to give the birthday guy a chance to pop off a few more rounds with my rifle i brought and then we were done. He has never shot a rifle. The guy said, " Just call it a night. You brought a group way too large for this kind of class. Just go home and come back when they have experiance. your done. Leave." I wasnt asking to bring the group in, i just wanted a few shots for one person. If you are a serious shooter, this is a really great place. The sales department has a great selection of both new and used firearms. The sales people are not on commission so, you get their undivided attention, even when you are not sure what you are actually looking for, (home defense vs. concealed carry, vs range firearm!) the range area has this big guy named Bob. Bob seems to be "no nonsense" with regard to the way he runs "his" range. Follow his rules, and respect the range, and he will bend over backward for you. Safety is paramount with Bob and the range staff!! Because I feel so, comfortable with the safety aspects of how the range is run, I got my wife and all my kids to come and shoot. I never thought I would say this about a gun range but, this one is a family place! read more

Since my last review, I was contacted by the owner to let me know that he took my feedback seriously, and has taken action. I've been here several more times since then, and whatever he did seemed to make an impact, as my experience with the employees were much more positive, and they were much more friendly. I still give it 4 stars since the stalls are very dark, but I still plan on becoming a regular here. read more
